Alternando su reciente faceta de documentalista con la de productor de cine y realizador de TV, el maestro del costumbrismo contémporaneo, el futuro ganador del Cecil B. DeMille en los próximos Golden Globes, el gran Martin Scorsese, se prepara para una grata sorpresa. Y la sorpresa es su regreso al género del terror y el suspenso.

Para los que no recuerden Cape Fear y su magnífico DeNiro, Martin Scorsese en 1991 adaptó la novela de John D. MacDonald y junto a él, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange y la jovencita Juliette Lewis armaron lo que para mi es un claro ejemplo de suspenso donde el cruento enfrentamiento entre DeNiro y su abogado defensor, Nolte, nos dejó petrificados en nuestras sillas. Para ese entonces Juliette Lewis caracterizaba a una jovencita casi de la misma edad mía; en ese entonces no concebía muy bien la diferencia de edades y pues me parecía un acto de seducción medianamente normal. Vista uno o dos veces después, el acto pedófilo se hizo más evidente y alimentó mi morbo en esta peli en particular. No hay cabida para ser tan macabro como lo fue DeNiro y tan genialmente malvado como Scorsese para lograr esta factura. La maldición de Scorsese, y de paso la de DeNiro, era la de arrasar en nominaciones y no ganar absolutamente nada (una gran injusticia con este par de monstruos), esta no fue la excepción. Qué buen guión, qué buena factura, qué actuaciones, etc… Y nada. Al final la revelación de Lewis y su virginal papel, le conllevaron dos premios y una nominación a nivel independiente.

Scorsese se prepara para un nuevo atardecer, de la mano de un reparto sencillamente impresionante, de Robert Richardson veterano de mil batallas en cinematografía al lado de Oliver Stone, el mismo Scorsese y recientemente visto en los basterdos de Tarantino, y de Thelma Shoonmaker editora que no sólo es una ganadora impresionante de óscares sino casi la mano derecha de Scorsese en todo su portafolio de largometrajes.

Apunta a ser escalofriante, impresionante, tenebrosa, ojalá muy gore y de una factura impecable. Que se lleve sus buenos premios y que Scorsese como es caballero repita Oscar como es debido.

Which explains why the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. (HFPA) along with NBC-TV and Dick Clark Prods. have decided to do things a bit differently for the 67th Annual Golden Globes Awards, due to air Jan. 17. They will start the shake-up by going with a nationwide live feed at 5 p.m. PST, when the show actually begins at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, rather than a delay to 9 p.m. PST.

“The core of the decision was that the Globes are unique,” says Orly Adelson, president of Dick Clark Prods. “They are the first award show of the year, and, being so, the curiosity level is enormous. But today, with the information that comes through so quickly, there’s no mystery anymore (after the fact). So the minute it is live, everybody has access to the information via the Internet.”

On the subject of the plethora of awards shows, Globes exec producer Barry Adelman says: “We think there’s room for everybody, we don’t get into competition. We’re just worried about our show.”

The Globes’ Nielsen ratings has plummeted from 26.8 million total viewers in 2004 to 2009’s 14.9 million. That’s partially a result of the Globes getting KO’d by the writers strike in 2008 (which led to actors refusing to attend the ceremony — which became a press conference) and then feeling a bit weak in the legs in 2009.

“Two years ago we actually had the strike, and last year we had the same problem with the actors strike looming,” Adelson points out. “So in neither case could we come full blown and do the marketing that normally is done for this show. So much energy went into ‘will it or won’t it’ that it held us back in many ways.”

So the “collaborative” decision to go live on the West Coast, emulating the Academy Awards, was one way to up the ratings ante. Another is to add a host, for the first time in 15 years.

“The idea of having a host emanated from DCP and Barry Adelman,” says HFPA prexy Philip Berk. “He felt that it would certainly help the show if we had a host, in the sense that you can get a lot of pre-publicity over having a host.

“I told him that most of the awards shows are trying to emulate us, and the fact is that our show is driven by awards. We don’t have musical numbers, we don’t have standup routines, and this is what most of the critics, and we assume most of the public, find so attractive about the Golden Globes. So the idea of being regressive and going back and doing what the others are doing, and failing at doing, seemed completely a nonissue for us.”

But the HFPA, DCP and NBC happily came to an agreement over one man, who said yes to their offer.

Berk recalls telling his cohorts, “The idea of a host is absolutely something that the Hollywood Foreign Press is not going to even entertain. The only person who I feel could possibly do anything for the show, who could really make a difference, and who I would accept as host would be Ricky Gervais. But he’ll never do it!”

Gervais, who made his hosting announcement complete with a bottle of beer in his hand, is sure to keep up the tradition of the Golden Globes being a slightly tipsy affair, where anything can happen. Be it Jack Nicholson in a well-lubricated state (was it Valium as he claimed, or the Moet Cham pagne that is prominently displayed/advertised on every table every year?), Christine Lahti winning while in the john, Liz Taylor losing it while trying hard to present the best picture award or Ving Rhames giving his award away to competitor Jack Lemmon, the Globes are always what its promoters insist on calling “the party of the year.”

No matter how the national live feed plays out this year, it really isn’t the free-flowing booze that makes the HFPA’s annual party such a laugh.

“The truth is that the party atmosphere is not based on the fact that there’s booze up on the table or anything like that,” Berk insists. “This party atmosphere is mainly because of what we have — this fabulous pit, which no other awards show has — in which you have, within arm’s length of each other, the most important producers, studio executives, all the movers and shakers of Hollywood. That’s where the party atmosphere comes from, the fact that we have this intimacy that no other awards show has. And then the booze on the table, well, we’ve never had people getting drunk, because all we serve is the Moet Champagne and the wine.”

Golden Globes will have 5 films nominated for best animated feature this year. They changed their rules to read: “Eligible films must be feature-length (70 minutes or longer) with no more than 25% live action. If less than eight animated films qualify, the award will not be given, in which case the films would be eligible for Best Picture. If less than twelve animated films qualify, the category will be limited to three nominations per year.”

So I guess films like Avatar may not qualify. But I have a question: Are there really 5 feature-length animated films that are worthy of being nominated this year? I don’t think so.

New Images from Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland! I think this will be one film worth seeing in 3D. I imagine it will be quite trippy…

I’m not sure about the Mad Hatter’s look. It’s a little too creepy and weird. Nice caterpillar, though.

The queens look cool. The Queen of Hearts having an over sized head will be weird. Is it a reference to the characters on cards? Do they sometimes have big heads?

The Cheshire Cat’s smile is awesome. And I think I’m scared of Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum.

Let me just say a word about the precedent to the Oscars: The GGs. These awards, though they don’t cover all the categories that the Oscars do, foretell possible nominees and possible wins. What’s important to us — right now — are the nominations. When those names get called out, we are off to the races in hyperdrive. We’ve got our unofficial tip off of the real deal. No, the nominations don’t match. Some people will get nominated for the GG, but not the big O. A perfect example of this? Last year’s women. Kate Winslet won it all at the GGs. She won for both Best Supporting Actress for “The Reader” and Best Actress in a Lead Role in “Revolutionary Road.” At the Oscars, it switched up — she got nominated and won for “The Reader” in the lead role category. Nothing for supporting in either films.

Weird.

So! We’re now on the look out. The date for GG nomination announcements is December 15th, 2009 — one month from today. For those of you who are wondering, the eligibility rules and regulations are the same for both. Well, actually … the difference is that for the Oscars, films must be released for a duration of 14 days in LA before December 31st to be eligible, where as the GGs its only 7 days.

Countdown is set! Golden Globes air January 17th, 2010.

British comic, Ricky Gervais first showed up on billboards in the US for his BBC-HBO series ‘Extras.’ At the time, living in LA driving by them I was completely uninterested. Someone trying to be an Extra- was this the next Angelyne (the “model” who made herself infamous with flooding LA billboards advertising herself)?

Bah, who wanted to look at this slumped down ‘chubby little fat loser’ looking forlorn? That was until, one of my friends sent me some clips of the show that included David Bowie:

After watching that and the Chris Martin episode, I soon was seeking out this wonderous show and laughing so hard my snorts echoed across oceans especially for the Kate Winslet episode where she gives Ricky’s best friend on how to talk dirty on the phone:

Congrats to Ricky , who will be hosting the Golden Globes on Jan. 17, 2010. Here are a few things I dig about Ricky:

1) His laugh is infectious.

2) He and Larry David have a similiar sense of the ridiculous, but Ricky never gets as annoying.

3) George Michael was on the season finale of ‘Extras’ trying to pick up a bit of ass in the park. Ricky gets stars to go further poking fun at themselves then anyone else.

4) He points out his own flaws and uses them to his comedic advantage.

5) The podcasts he does with Stephen and Karl are the thing of legend that made him famous in the first place. Comic teams that work this well produce The Office & Extras let me know the Universe gives back!

Cobiçado pelo Globo de Ouro, Emmy e Oscar nos últimos anos, o comediante Ricky Gervais finalmente disse sim – mas só para o primeiro. O ator será o apresentador da 67a edição do Golden Globe Awards que acontecerá no próximo 17 de janeiro de 2010, sendo exibido pela NBC.

Com criações como ‘Extras’ e ‘The Office’ no currículo, Gervais vem roubando as atenções sempre que vai entregar algum prêmio nestas três premiações: tanto pelo timing de suas piadas improvisadas, quanto pelo carisma.

Em comunicado oficial a imprensa, o ator comentou sua decisão: “Acredito que o Globo de Ouro é a maior celebração da indústria da TV e do cinema. Rejeitei várias propostas como esta nos últimos anos, mas algumas vezes você simplesmente não consegue dizer não”.

Happy Tuesday. So you all had LOTS to say about movie remakes (we’re going to talk horror remakes later as we get ready for Halloween) plus you had lots to say about comeback actors. Feel the same way about comeback actresses? We’ll see. But in newsy nuptials, Ivanka Trump (spawn of The Donald) wed Jared Kushner, newspaper exec over the weekend in what everyone is calling an extraordinarily lavish ceremony. That’s so odd for the Trumps. Then, Mad Men star Elisabeth Moss tied the knot with SNL star Fred Armisen over the weekend in what everyone is calling an extraordinarily private and low key ceremony.  Bravo all around. Ricky Gervais has been tapped to host the Golden Globes, which should make them funnier and possibly drink-ier (if you can believe it). But now let’s talk about what everyone wants to talk about on Tuesdays: Dancing Wih The Stars. And I have two words for you: DOUBLE ELIMINATION. That’s right. There are nine dancers left and TWO of them will go home tonight. just to recap, Mya scored 24 yesterday, Melissa Joan Hart had 20, Mark Decascos and Joanna had 26, Aaron Carter had 25, Michael Irvin and Kelly O each had 20 points, Donny had 24 and  Louie Vito had 21.  No matter how it all transpires tonite, there will be not one but two limousines ferrying home also-rans who just didn’t have the juice. So who’s going home? I’m listing four here so you have an even greater chance of getting at least one right! This could be interesting. Ricky Gervais (The Office, Extras, The Invention of Lying) will host the Golden Globes gala on Jan. 17. It says here that this will make the 2010 event the first time the Globes have had a host since 1995.

“Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry which includes both film and TV, but also an environment where I feel I can get free reign as a host. I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are just some things you don’t turn down,” Gervais said in the announcement.

Not to be outdone: “We are delighted to have Ricky Gervais as the host on our show,” said Philip Berk, President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. “He’ll bring his unique brand of humor and charm to what will continue to be a fast paced award show.”

As I said, it could be interesting. Will be interesting if he’s given free reign to be more host (Oscars: Johnny Carson, Billy Cristal) than circus ringleader (Oscars: Hugh Jackman).

I was initially charmed by last year’s Oscars, with Jackman and all the huge sets and productions numbers and themes and clusters of stars bumping into each other to group-announce the nominees for various categories. But I reconsidered. In the end, I just want a parade of dresses, somebody going off-script at least once an hour, a gorgeous tribute to the year’s deceased and some funny, snarky and emotional speeches. I don’t want song and dance or acting stars out to prove they can do song and dance.

Ricky? Are you my man?

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Nominees for the Golden Globes are announced Dec. 15 at 8 a.m. ET.

Well today on the Twitter feed, I got some good news and I got some bad news. Let’s start with the good news.

Good News

Well my prayers have been somewhat answered. Rickey Gervais has been tapped to host the Golden Globes in January. Apparently he has been said to never want to host an awards show. I think that he will do a great job. My only problem is that the Golden Globes hasn’t had a host since 1995. I know that Ricky will make it work… hopefully.

Now, the Bad News

My favorite dancer (and the one I picked to win this season) Billy Bell has left the competition due to an illness. FOX has not indicated what illness Billy is suffering from, but it must be something that would cause him to withdraw from being on a show. He will be on tonight’s broadcast and his replacement Brandon Dumlao, a hip-hop dancer, will take his partner and will perform on the 2-hour premiere on Tuesday at 8/9c. I am very sad by this news. First of all, the kid’s name is William Bell (Fringe shout-out) so I knew that this kid was destined from greatness. He is truly an amazing dancer and it would be nice to America get a change to see his talent. He only began dancing 5 years ago and currently attends Julliard. Not since season 3’s champion Sabra has someone been on the show with so much talent and nearly half the experience as the rest of the contestants. I hope that something can be done and Billy can be in season 7.

Not since 1995 has the Golden Globe Awards had a host. That’s about to change. The producers have tapped Ricky Gervais for the 67th annual awards show, to be broadcast on NBC January 17th, 2010. The Golden Globe- and Emmy-winning actor/comedian may be best known for his work in the BBC’s “The Office.” In addition to executive producing the American version of the hit British show, Gervais recently co-wrote, co-directed, and starred in the film “The Invention of Lying” with Jennifer Garner.

His brand of humor may be just what the ailing telecast needs.

NBC’s Executive Vice President of Alternative Programming thinks “Ricky is certainly one of the funniest people on the planet and has provided some of the most hilarious and memorable awards show moments in recent memory.” You may recall Gervais’ Golden Globe acceptance speech that began with, “I’m from a little place called England — we used to run the world before you.”

Gervais says he feels like hosting the Globes will offer him “an environment where I feel I can get free reign [sic] as a host.”

We can’t wait to see what that “free reign” looks like. What about you? Are you more likely to watch?
