Goodness me, it grows chilly, doesn’t it? Do you know where it wasn’t chilly? NEW YORK. A better post will advance happily forward when I’ve got my film developed but in the meantime, how are your respective necks? Feeling the wintersome air? Hmm. We can help.

Giles Deacon has made a dress for a rabbit. The Cadbury’s Caramel Bunny, to be precise. He’s also made some limited edition scarves for the same rabbit. (Why a rabbit would need clothing, is beyond us, but we’re always a fan of Animals Doing Human Things).

Here’s a picture of the scarf:

It’s quite nice, isn’t it?

We have two of these to give away for free free free. If you want to enter the competition, please send an email to bluebirdsaresonatural@gmail.com with a picture of your favourite animal wearing human clothes. It can be a link to google images, or you could physically draw it if you’d rather. Either way, you want the scarf, you need to give us anthropomorphism.

Comp. closes this time next week i.e. 6th November 2009.

- Focker, par Late Of The Pier. Late of the What ? Late of the Pier.

Sjukt fascinerad över Style of Eye för tillfället.

We have such a dubious claim to being a ‘fashion blog’ that we surprise even ourselves when the term gets bandied about. Sure we were nominated in the Irish Blog Awards under that category, and go to the Fashion Blogger’s Brunches, but, really, we like to think of ourselves as ‘Life and Style’ (thanks for the title, Clare Dot). As such, when we actually feature, fashion items it comes as an equal shock to us as to you, dear readers. Nonetheless, a DIY post.

I wanted to have a pair of Rumi-style boots, but do not make megabucks. I am an enterprising creature, however, and fond of not studying for exams. Thusly, I found an old pair of ankle boots, some straps from an old bag, and some chain headbands from Primark, and set to work. And safety pins. I am not an able seamstress.

Do you like my lo-fi camera skills? And how about the lay-out of materials you might need? Also, I forgot to take a photo at the very start. Just imagine the boots have no chains on them at all. Ok, great.

Then, basically, I stuck them all on. Literally. With glue. And safety pins. Like I said, I am not an able seamstress. (Unlike the Offshoot Girls, swoon)

SAFETY PIN CLOSE-UP!

This is the end result. I’m very excited about wearing them. Except not on my bike. I fear they’ll get caught in the chain and I will end up, really embarrassed, in ER.

It’s something I often think about, particularly with tracks that I often come back to. I came

It’s something I often think about, particularly with tracks that I often come back to. I came across this the other day, and it set me thinking about my own music collection. Certain songs, for me, seem to have gathered up the environment and my mood when I first heard them so that, whenever I hear them again, I am always transported back to that first occasion.

Bad Times

They say, whoever “they” are, that it’s the very worst memories that tend to stick with you the longest. Possibly. It’s certainly easy for me to think of songs that I associate with particularly depressing events in my life, possibly because I’ve been very lucky so far that these events have stood out particularly dramatically. Anyway enough tempting fate, we’ll tackle those first.

Let’s start with Golden Skans, by the Klaxons. A pretty distinctive song and certainly my favourite track on Myths of the Near Future but unfortunately one that will ever be tainted by bad memories. It first hit my radar at the time I heard about some very sad events. I knew Stephen Jones at my primary school, not super well as he was two years older, but well enough: he’d been an exceptional swimmer and so our paths had crossed a lot more than they otherwise might have (one of my main passions in life is flying up and down a pool). We met at galas, said hello in the corridors and even shared a room at the Boys I.A.P.S swimming finals, when we stayed the night near Millfield School. Like me, he’d been a lifeguard for the pools in the Chiltern area.

It was while lifeguarding that I’d been told of the news of his death aged only 18, by my tearful senior lifeguard. It wasn’t long before I was hit with severe grief, without really knowing why. Sure, I’d liked Stephen: he was energetic and was, to pick a phrase often used in these situations, “full of life”. But we hadn’t been close and I hadn’t seen him for a few years. Perhaps the grief I was feeling was selfish as much as selfless: here was a boy who had led such a similar life me, now gone forever. A Memento Mori, as much as a Resquiat in Pace. Either way I was depressed in a way that I couldn’t feel I could express to those around me, it seeming childish somehow.

I’ve always turned to music; songs have always helped. So I did. Golden Skans built up a considerable charting on my “Most Played” playlist and today it brings back those memories. The line “from now on you can forget all future plans” seemed hauntingly appropriate, whatever its writer had intended for it

On a rather different note, three years ago two songs helped me through a rather difficult stage in my life, a thankfully short bout of Depression that affected me through my GCSE year. If you’ve never suffered from this, it is difficult to understand: I always though that it was just a condition where you felt sad. For me, it was much more than that. It was a time when I decided that I wasn’t Christian and that I didn’t really believe in an afterlife, which seems fine. For me, however, this lead to one revelation: I was going to die and, once dead, that was it. A nothingness of an existence for eternity, for infinity. For a mathematician dealing with concepts like infinity every day, the idea of boundless time still scares me. Hell I could deal with, but this? Sadness doesn’t describe this. I despaired. I felt apathetic – what was the point of working towards exams, which ultimately would mean nothing? What was the point of anything? What about people who had died? What was their non-existence like for them? It was horrible.

So, yet again, I turned to my music. The Kinks’ Waterloo Sunset and the Kooks’ Naive. Both songs struck a note, possibly because they were simply the ones that where at the top of my playlist at the time. There was, for me, almost a sadness in Ray Davies’ quavering voice, singing the lines “as long as I gaze on/ Waterloo Sunset/ I am in paradise”. Both songs managed to pull me out of the mess my mind was in, allowing me to do a bit of thinking and get my thoughts in order. I felt better from the music.

Finally (and I promise this will be the last of the depressing stuff), this summer my grandfather died. A slightly less unexpected departure, he had been ill for some time and the prospects had never been good. When it happened, however, it came as a shock to me and, this time, led to some very visible sadness. There are two pieces of music I connect with this, however, and for nicer reasons than Golden Skans. The first is Coldplay’s Death and all his Friends: sounds depressing but, I assure you, it’s far from it. I found it an uplifting and inspiring piece, the rousing crescendo about a minute in being one of the highlights of the entire album. Lovely.

The other is one of my grandfather’s favourite pieces: Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony. Make sure you listen to it, especially (for those with more of an attention deficit) the third movement, which was played as I stood in the Exeter Crematorium, crying my eyes out. Strangely enough, many of those more snobbish classical critics looked down on Sibelius’ work, which just goes to show: ignore critics.

The theme repeated on the horns was said to have been inspired by swan calls. It’s beautiful and it still brings tears to the eyes. I can see why he liked it.

Maybe I should have stuck to the Mathmo sterotype and not be able to talk about my emotions at all. Ah well. Good times will follow in another post and I’ll cheer up, but writing this has left me a little sad.

Or should that title read, “How Good Is This Going To Be….”.For today we are in a soothsaying mood. Perhaps it’s the start of the new year that’s making us feel this way, not sure, but this is a post all about hypothetical albums hopefully due at some point in the future that we’re most looking forward to. Whether they will ever happen or not is a totally separate issue…

It’s basically a slot about our favourite bands and it gives us a chance to reflect on their collective ace-ness and send them all positive vibes for writing that next album. Here’s hoping, because their last efforts were life-changers! We list below a bit about why they have us hooked and we also attach an mp3 of our favourite track by them to date…

1) LCD SOUNDSYSTEM - tbc (2009?)
No better place to begin than the modern era’s most important band. James Murphy, Pat Mahony, Nancy Whang et al, are about as good and eclectic as you could ever hope the worlds best band to be. Experimental and original, without ever disappearing up their own collective arses. Reflective and full of inspiration from past bands, yet somehow managing to sound like the future. They are true song masters of the Sensei kind. We love their past work, culminating in the critically acclaimed 2nd album, Sound Of Silver, released back in March 2007. Anyone that can write a tune as great as ‘All My Friends’ will forever be by my side. Like a past relationship that you think back to and privately admit to yourself that you are still in love. It doesn’t die and it never will, you just stop talking about it. Well today I’m talking again. Despite recording songs that are good enough to get the “I-want-them-played-at-my-funeral” request already, we look ahead to what box of magic tricks James will bring us in the future. Regarding the next album, James Murphy admitted last November that the songs are already written, (in his head at least), and once he reaches “critical mass” he will have to start recording. The sooner the better. We can’t hold our breath forever.

2) THE ARCADE FIRE- tbc (DVD first!)
Like all the best bands, they inhabit a world in some other paradox to ours. Sometimes it’s ice-cold and sometimes its as fiery as a split in the earth’s core. We totally adore them andrightly so. You don’t quite become a fan of Arcade Fire, rather you worship at their alter. They are more a cult than a band. I’m not sure where the religious descriptions come from – Perhaps it’s their Morman dresscode and the fact that they all seem somehow related? Perhaps it’s the fact that when you see them live you catch a spirit that possess you to sing out, loudly, with arms aloft? Perhaps it’s the energy in which they climax a song that duly punches you in the gut, right where you feel it most? Their first album, Funeral, released back in 2004, was a truly moving debut that set up the promise that was finally fulfilled in their follow up album, Neon Bible. Everything changes once you hear that piece of work. It’s as individual as a Hieronymus Bosch painting and just as rammed full of ideas. They release their tour DVD in 2009, so that is the only new thing on the horizon from these guys, but perhaps 2010 will herald the next studio album. By then the church will have a queue around the block. Probably best you join it now…

THE ARCADE FIRE - INTERVENTION (ysi)

3) DAFT PUNK- tbc (2009?)
Where to start? These guys were running around the world doing their thing back in the mid-1990’s, whilst the rest of the world was sucking it’s thumb wandering where this genre called ‘Dance’ music was going. You had to look ahead many years, once blogs developed their taste for the more recent sounds of Justice and Soulwax, for an entire new genre, now referred to as ‘Electro’, or more confidently, ‘Blog House’ . But these new acts, along with the likes of Erol Alkan, Boys Noize, Digitalism and quite frankly anybody from France using a synthesizer! were just the pretenders to Daft Punk’s throne. It was made abundently clear as to who should be anointed the crown-wearing daddy’s of this scene when Daft Punk went on a world tour in 2007. Anyone that caught that true moment of spectacular dominance will testify that Daft Punk are exactly where you should start when talking about Electro dance music. With all their obvious rock band influences and robotic imagery, (we’ve got to give their totally awesome robot masks a mention), these guys play out a kicking set. We hope they bring out a new album soon. It seems they have approx 4 years between albums, with Homework arriving in 1997, Discovery in 2001 and their last full album, Human After All in 2005. Hmm, that takes us to 2009 right? With the massive success of Justice over the last couple of years, where can Daft Punk go? All eyes front and centre…

4) KLAXONS- tbc (2009?)
A far smaller band than the acts listed above, but an effective group nonetheless. They arrived amongst the false start of a scene, known as Nu Rave, back in 2006. This almost decided their fate, in no small part thanks to the desperation of the NME magazine’s attempt to drum up a new scene for the teenager masses, so sales boosted by collecting together a bunch of new bands that turned out to be far too individualto be rounded up in such a commercial way. However, it still ballooned and much attention was gained, before they swiped the critical acclaim that comes with winning the Mercury Music Prize. This seemed to allow a deeper appreciation that took them beyond the Nu Rave moniker. Upon reflection, the scene has thankfully imploded and inevitibly pretenders such as Hadouken and Late Of The Pier seemed to have muscled in on thierdollar. Interestingly, the only band not to have blown up in hype from that whole scene are The Sunshine Underground from Leeds, who despite having the strongest album of them all never quite caught the zeitgeist like Klaxons. Hearing some of The Sunshine Underground’s new demo’s it appears they haven’t so much developed as gone backwards. We will see. Anyway, its Klaxons that we will be watching with a keen eye for their next move. They survived the thump of a crashing scene and they seem to hold a level of quality that owes as much to fashion and art as much as their excellent music. What strange and beautiful monster could they possibly evolve into?

KLAXONS - GOLDEN SKANS (ysi)

As usual, all the above acts are keeping tight lipped about future releases (LCD don’t even tell their manager when they’re recording!), so we will have to hold on. When news breaks The Recommender will be right on it to bring you any information.

We obviously have a multitude of other acts that we are also bubbling with excitement about, but we had to stop the post somewhere. Hopefully the above bands give a fairly decent cross-section. Leave a comment if you wish.

We hope you enjoyed this little forage away from bringing you our usual pluckings from the world of fresher, new music. Our next post will definitely be more contemporary. We’ve already got a handful of juicy bands that are virtually jumping out of the sack to meet you…

It is ratherveryinfactmightily cold these wintery days. And as I sit in work with FM 104 blaring Snow Patrol behind me, there is nothing that I want to do more than be on a sunnysunshinegoodtime island with some quality music and beautiful people. Thank you, then, Bodytonic and Night Flight, for putting Airbound Croatia into my pudgy little fingers.

Night Flight is one of the better regular club nights in Dublin, and when combined with The Lovely Bodytonic Crew, it all promises to be some kind of special. Here’s the pitch:
The Festival itself takes place in the small Croatian coastal resort of Petrcane, with open-air stages on the beach, a nightclub called Barbarellas and pirate ship, The Argonaut.

Musically it will something for everyone, keeping it downtempo by day at the bar with a mix of yacht rock, warped electronica, folk and disco then its to the outside terrace for dubstep, hip hop and live bands, before the club kicks off with late night house and techno.

At the moment, tickets only cost 39e and are available from here.

For more information send an electronic mail to info@bodytonicmusic.com, and if you’d like to pitch an act to play, go here.

I’m proper going. For reals.

Long long before Gok Wan and Trinny and Suzie, there was a budding designer who understood- nay, KNEW- that the world is comprised of different body types. This young upstart had visions of an army of females, all clad in urban streetwear, all rejoicing in their own individuality. This was a line for all girls, all real girls. Only fitting then that it should be called Re: Al Girls.

Yes. It’s diary time again. Here is our first extract. Can we please bear in mind-
a)The baffling amount of layering inherent in these ‘designs’.
b) The deft use of colouring pencil.
c) The clear arrows pointing to the accessories.
d) The options for so so many of them to be made into trousers.

I think the ‘Superstar’ jeans are my favourite. Although, I do hold a soft spot for the green shirt/blue tie/ jeans combo, as it was based on an outfit (in fact, it WAS an outfit) that I used to wear on the regular.

Yeps. It’s true. That’s why we’re running a competition! With prizes! Lámhaí síos, beolaí dúnta, and éistigí suas…

A friend of mine is running an event in the Morrisson Hotel on Friday the 24th of October, called ‘The Hat’s Off’. It’s social mixer for stylish, hip young urbanites like you, our lovely lovely readers. There’ll be a free cocktail reception at 8pm, followed by music from Halfset (with whom there’s an interview in the new issue of Analogue) and DJ Will Softly. Also, my nearest dearest and bestest friend Simon will be running some projections during the night. He’s very talented, so it’s bound to be good. Katie and I will be there also, drinking and giggling in the corner.

Tickets are on sale now, from Road Records and City Discs. They only cost 20e, which is pas mal. However, would anyone like to go along for frees? We’ve got two sets of tickets for yiz yes yes. Up for it? If so, comment with your name and email address and we’ll sort you out. If you’re too late, go and buy a ticket anyway. You’ll enjoy yourself, promise.

edit: Tickets will be allocated on a LUCKY DIP basis. ohh goody. Closing date for entries is one week from today, Saturday the eighteenth of October, leaving the winners with six uncomfortable days and six sleepless nights to endure as they attempt to contain their excitement. Be strong.

Words cannot describe how beautiful this video is. You know it’s well filmed when it makes the band members look 400% more attractive. Clearly, there must be an Adonis-lense on the camera they shot this on.

With slow and achingly gorgeous graphics, from falling water to smashing beams of light, this video could make anyone believe that wearing just ribbons constitutes a substantial outfit. Plus, at the end, they look like human anime characters. Few have tried, most have failed. But these guys pulled it off with high, high marks.

We just got a hold of this new track by Pitbull & Lil Jon w/ samples of Federico Franchis’ electro track ‘Cream’. I only recommend this cause it’s such a hot beat and flows kinda nice w/ them.

Ok, for this next mix I’ll let Flosstradamus do the explanation…

“Curt from Flosstradamus here. Just giving you the low down on this podcast. The boy Diplo asked us to do a Dancemania pod cast. If you don’t know about it Dancemania is a label out of Chicago that started in the mid 80’s with some pretty known anthems and artists. It wasn’t till the early 90’s when the more known names such as: DJ Funk, Paul Johnson, DJ Deeon, etc. were putting out heaters on DM, with ghetto and disco sounds. Within a few years the label put out more songs than you could download in one day off of hype machine. By 2001 they put out the DM 300 12″!! Over 300 songs on a single independent label out of Chicago! Pretty cool if ya ask me? That being said we had to choose from a nice handful of songs for a 30 minute mix. Also, the original approach for this mix tape was “ghetto house” also known as juke, ghetto tech, jit, among others. So we tried to merge a few of our favorite (I’m sure you have a handful too) Dancemania “Ghetto House” tunes with some new & exclusive Ghetto House tunes of today. I hope you like the lil mix we whipped up.”
