It’s been a busy two weeks. Two shows have been transmitted. So, what happened during these two shows? Well I’ll tell you.

FRIDAY 13/11/2009

Friday the 13th. The day associated with everything crashing around you. Strangely, for the Friday Night Lounge, that wasn’t the case.

The show went well. Although, I did notice that the mp3 CD problem wasn’t to do with the CD decks. It was the CDs themselves. The discs were brand spanking new, so I’m assuming it was something to do with the burning settings.

Anyway, inbetween playing music from the Kaiser Chiefs, Happy Mondays, Abba and Donna Lewis, we talked about: Didier Drogba’s generous donation towards an Ivory Coast hospital; a robber sending his own mugshot to the police; why 30,000 people in UK still watch television in black and white; and a proposed 93 page guide for police officers telling them how to ride a bicycle.

Of course, along with that, we had the usual Trivia’s Cocktail. This week it was about Formula One, the connection between the FISA-FOCA war of the 1980s and the FIA-FOTA row, was they both threatened breakaway championships.

Plus, That’s From this week was an easy one. Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey from, you’ve guessed it, Goldfinger – the third Bond film staring Sean Connery.

That was last week’s edition. What I didn’t know was that the next week would be a bumpy ride.

FRIDAY 20/11/2009

Waking up to only 5 hours of sleep; being soaked while waiting for a bus; stuck in a jammed supermarket car park; along with a bad week in general, I wasn’t wanting anything else to go wrong.

Arrived at the studio around at 6:45pm. Began to set everything up. After that, and a few phone calls to friends about other affairs to kill the time later, I was all ready to go. The great thing about being in the studio with an hour or so to showtime, is that you get to relax and ponder on things. When you’ve done everything you needed to that is.

And with Children In Need being on BBC 1, I was expecting a lower listener reach. I mean, who would rather listen to some nutter playing music and then chatting inbetween like a madman, when one of the biggest broadcasts on the British TV calendar is on? So, less pressure on me then. Providing it goes to plan.

9:03, Smooth Radio completes it’s hourly news bulletin. Fade out. Cue a Slow Radio West Fife jingle. Fade up the mic. “It’s Friday 20th of November. And this is the show you only listen to because the Television is broken…” I said, introducing the show before starting the theme tune. Then I did the standard procedure of outlining what was coming up on the show. Then fade out to Genie In A Bottle by Christina Aguilera.

What happened next was another example of me having a bad day. As Genie In A Bottle was about to fade out, I was about to fade up my microphone to begin discussing Children In Need. When I realised something…

On the mixing desk, at the very top, are two rows of buttons. The first row were PGM buttons. When on, whatever gets said or played, is transmitted to the listener’s headsets across the hospital. The second row were AUD buttons. These mean “audition” and when they are on, whatever gets said or played can be heard in the studio.

The PGM button on the presenter’s mic was off. It was off since I went on air.

So what the listeners heard, instead of me self-deprecating and introducing the programme, was: 30 seconds of silence and a theme tune faded up and down slightly at various points.

I normally leave it off before I go on air, so then anything unbroadcastable (like a private conversation with friends or swearing at faulty equipment) doesn’t get transmitted if I accidentally nudge the mic’s fader up.

I thought I pressed it. But in my blind panic, I obviously didn’t press the PGM button hard enough. A schoolboy error, frankly. So after Genie In A Bottle, and pressing the PGM button, I had to make the quickest introduction ever.

Apart from that, the first hour was uneventful. For once, the show was running bang on time. Unlike three to four minutes fast it usually is. Throughout the show we talked about how you can get your name translated into other languages, and find out what they mean. Along with, Crocodile Fossils and where to get a tuxedo for only £30.

Plus, this week’s That’s From returned to the adverts with Search For The Hero by M People, this appeared in the Peugeot 406 advert during the mid-1990s. And as for Trivia’s Cocktail, it was quite a fizzy one. With a single share in the company from 1919 worth $92,500 by 1997 and it’s name came from it’s medicinal ingredients. The link is of course Coca-Cola. Which reminds me, their Christmas adverts should be on soon.

It brought a bad week to a close. Thank god!

Well, hopefully I should also be starting voice-over work again. Schedule permitting. I may even put them up here for you to hear. We’ll see.

Zeitlose Songs wie „Goldfinger“ haben Shirley Bassey zur Musiklegende gemacht und auch nach 50 Jahren im Musik-Business denkt sie noch lange nicht aufs Aufhören. Elf Tracks sind auf der neuen CD zu finden – Gary Barlow („Take That“), Ricky Wilson („Kaiser Chiefs“), David Tennant („Pet Shop Boys“), u.v.m. agierten als Songwriter und so weisen einige Songs enormes Hitpotenzial auf.

Review of Dame Shirley Bassey's "The Performance"

Today, The Scotsman has released a review of Dame Shirley Bassey’s latest album, titled “The Performance”.

IT’S Dame Shirley Bassey these days, if you don’t mind – as if anyone needed reminding that we are in the presence of musical royalty. Elegant, commanding, playful, sophisticated, vulnerable – or, in the words of Manic Street Preachers’ frontman James Dean Bradfield, “this beautiful, glamorous singing beast” – Bassey is everything you could want from a diva and now she’s back to show yer Leonas how it should be done.

As was evident from her lauded appearance two years ago at the Glastonbury festival, she effortlessly musters the level of respect and regard afforded her fellow Welsh warbler Tom Jones, an old pro who just about manages to pull off the balancing act of moving with the times while remaining true to himself. Bassey, for her part, is about to show exactly how that is done on her first full studio album in more than 20 years. The Performance is dignified, heartfelt and timeless.

A good deal of the credit must go to Bond composer David Arnold in the role of producer. Given Bassey’s indelible association with the James Bond series – she is the only artist to have sung three Bond film themes – it must have taken all of five seconds to matchmake those two, and another ten to persuade John Barry and lyricist Don Black to compose a new song for their muse, the first they have written for her since Diamonds Are Forever. Our Time Is Now is a good, grown-up meditation on romance but it is far from the best this album has to offer.

More intriguing than the rekindling of old creative partnerships is the host of bright young things who have also queued up to write songs for Bassey. Some of the album’s contributors are no-brainers – the Pet Shop Boys, David McAlmont and Rufus Wainwright would probably have had diva strops of their own if they had not been invited to the party. Others, such as KT Tunstall and Kaiser Chiefs’ Nick Hodgson, are more unexpected choices, and some – we’re looking at Richard Hawley here – are downright inspired.

Most are understandably in thrall to the Bassey persona, writing songs to fit their conception of the veteran diva. And so Bassey comes out contemplative rather than shaking her stuff on opening number Almost There, written by Tom Baxter. You can see right away where he is going with the line “I’m not quite so young, I’m not quite so foolish in my defence”, but Bassey makes subtle work of its rather mournful tone before soaring on the big orchestral finish.

Her countrymen, the Manic Street Preachers, take the sentimental, pseudo-autobiograpical route with The Girl From Tiger Bay. It’s a lovely song from a band who are more than capable of whipping up some heart-tugging romance when they have a mind to and, unlike other tracks, it is strong enough to retain something of the Manics’ stamp even as it is submitted to the traditional Bassey takeover.

Apparently, we have Rufus Wainwright to thank for the impetus of the album, and won’t he love that. His contribution, Apartment, was the first track to fall into place and he dares to take Bassey somewhere different. Despite the Latino arrangement, there is more than a hint of the European cabaret tradition about its protagonist’s irreverent rejection of the fairytale lifestyle (“I’m running away from Cinderella, don’t want to go to Rapunzel’s hairdresser”) in favour of becoming a girl of independent means.

KT Tunstall also has fun with brassy Bassey without crossing over into kitsch on the bluesy strut of Nice Men, a good bad girl song on which Bassey demands to know “where have all the nice men, where have all the good men, where have all the bad men gone?”

Gary Barlow’s This Time is an old school Bacharachian ballad which is infinitely more dynamic than anything on the most recent Take That album, while Nick Hodgson’s classy composition I Love You Now also evokes old-school pop glamour without being a slavish pastiche of the sequined 1960s.

Best of the lot is Bassey’s beautifully controlled rendering of the tremulous, melancholic After The Rain, written by Richard Hawley, who is on formidable form right now.

Compared to these gems, Arnold’s two contributions are a little Bassey-by-numbers. No Good About Goodbye boasts a great title but sounds like an inferior Mad About The Boy, while As God Is My Witness is just plain turgid.

An old-school performer like Bassey knows that you need to hold something back for the finale – and the Pet Shop Boys-penned The Performance Of My Life provides the quintessential grandstanding finish which will please those looking for some va-va-voom from the Dame. It is to the writers’ credit – and Bassey’s, and Arnold’s – that this performance, along with the rest of the album, is more about soul-baring integrity than retro camp.

Sounds promising. I can’t wait to hear the album for myself. Keep an eye out for it on November 9th. I’m sure it’ll be worth the money.

Este filmes do agente secreto é muito bom. Nesta missão Bond precisa impedir que roubem o ouro do Forte Knox, lugar de reservas americanas. É o terceiro filme da série, que conta com ação na medida certa e um ótimo roteiro. Desde partidas de golfe até ataques aéreos para entrar no cofre. Recomendo mesmo.

Como eu sou uma apaixonada pelo James Bond desde criança pude ver toda a séria inúmeras vezes. Claro que antigamente adorava os filmes pois admirava a vida de espião do 007, mas com o tempo comecei a compreender realmente a série, a influência que ela exerceu durante o mundo bipolar, o seu jogo político-social, e é claro a sua importância para a história do cinema. Assim, resolvi compartilhar o meu amor incondicional por esse homem com licença para matar. Uma vez que haverão vários posts tratando do filme criei uma nova categoria “Cinema-007”.

1962 – Dr. No (007 Contra o Satânico Dr. No)

Agente 007: Sean Connery
Bond girl: Ursula Andress
Diretor: Terence Young
Obs: Por meio desse filme, o agente secreto ganhou inúmeros fãs e ficou famoso pela sua ” vodka-martini, shaken but not stirred” e pelo inesquecível “Bond, James Bond”. Do soundtrack do filme “Under the Mango Tree, da Diana Coupland” seria minha escolha porque ela resume muito bem o clima jamaicano do filme. Acho que por ter sido o primeiro tem um gosto super especial, Dr.No é um dos meus preferidos.

Nos créditos finais de Goldfinger estava marcado que o próximo filme deva ser On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, porém o sucessor acabou sendo Thunderball.

Title Sequence Review: Goldfinger

Although most of the James Bond movies feature a colorful, abstract, and trippy title sequence, Goldfinger’s opening credits really stand out. Also, the song is great and really adds to the mystique of the films’s beginning. The sequence starts out with the typical scene of looking at Bond through the barrel of a gun, then blood running down the screen, an image I always thought was cool. The rest of the sequence involves see through, scantily clad women who have various scenes from the movie superimposed onto them, as if their bodies were film screens. The highlight of the title sequence is a close-up of a woman’s face with a car grill and license plate on her. The license plate then rotates several times with different plates in an interesting fashion. Near the end, a shot of a woman’s back is shown with a huge explosion, followed by legs enveloped by flames. This sequence is visually appealing and captures the action essence of the James Bond films, along with the usual sexual themes.

It’s obvious that this legend still has “her groove”. Those song excerpts are astonishing. I really can’t wait to hear this album in full.

EON Productions… do yourself a favor. Hire Dame Shirley Bassey to sing the theme song for the next Bond film. David Arnold’s got her back (he’s producing her new album), and she’s never failed the franchise.

James Bond's subscription to "Playboy," March 1960

In “Playbill,” the page that introduces the March 1960 Playboy magazine, editors provide context for the first appearance of a James Bond short story contributed to that issue by Ian Fleming.

During a visit to Chicago, Fleming had been to the Playboy Building and “was properly impressed by the smart decor and the uncommon beauty of the receptionists and secretaries.”

As it stands, this makes for great biographical insight — with the 007 thrillers still in ascendency, the Eon Productions film deal yet to be struck, and Ian Fleming himself over four years from the end of life. Playboy refers to “those healthily selling novels” and list as examples (in this order): Doctor No (1958), Casino Royale (1953), Live and Let Die (1954), and Goldfinger (1959).

More importantly to this Blog entry, however, is the following quote from Fleming, which gives insight to the character he created.

I’m sure James Bond, if he were an actual person, would be a registered reader of Playboy.

Aston Martin Lagonda (USA) DB5 ad, 1964

This ad shows up with somewhat of a regularity.

Hard to say if the color cast is based on available lighting (in which it was apparently photographed), or if the Aston Martin DB5 shown here isn’t quite the color we’re used to from the vehicle featured in Goldfinger (1964).

Again to the important role of branding in James Bond stories, recall what Ian Fleming wrote in Chapter 7 of Goldfinger (1959), appropriately titled, “Thoughts in a DB III.”

“The car was from the pool. Bond had been offered the Aston Martin or a Jaguar 3.4. He had taken the DB III. Either of the cars would have suited his cover — a well-to-do, rather adventurous young man with a taste for the good, the fast things of life.”

In chosing to update that to an Aston Martin DB5 for the film adaptation, note how the contemporaneous advertising copy here substantiates that characterization.

“The 4-litre engine is a pedigree world championship engine that made history on the race tracks of Europe (282 brake horsepower at 5,500 r.p.m.).”
Air conditioning. Electric windows. It has 22 coats of paint (“count them”), and “it’s upholstered in finest quality coach hide from the tanneries of Lancashire. The carpet is famous English Wilton, deep piled, hand-fitted throughout….”

At some point I’ll have to add pricing charts for commonly purchased goods here, by year, to provide context for just how much $13,000 would have meant in 1964.

WB sportklimmen in Puurs, de resultaten en de roddels

Afgelopen zaterdag zakte de crème de la crème van het mondiale klimwereldje af naar de klimax in puurs voor alweer een editie van de ‘goldfinger’, één van de manches van het wereldkampioenschap. Na een uiterst spannende finale met werd het duidelijk dat de jeugd het dit jaar voor het zeggen had. 16 (!) jaar zijn beide overduidelijke winnaars. Bij de dames won de Oostenrijkse Johanna Ernst de superfinale door de licht aangepaste mannenroute bijna te toppen. Bij de mannen was het de jonge Chech Adam Onra die nog maar eens zijn superioriteit kwam bewijzen. Op zijn 13de klom hij zijn eerste 9a, en 2 weken geleden klom hij er zelf eentje à vue, ongelooflijk. De 2 winnaars overklasten alle deelnemers vooral op technische superioriteit en snelheid. Even rusten in een 8b of 8c is blijkbaar niet nodig als je 16 bent.

Wat achteraf ook opviel was dat alle topklimmers gewoon iets kwamen eten en drinken tussen het publiek. Niets te sterallures, dure campers of overdreven luxe. Zo zagen we Patxi Usobiaga zijn eigen pasta opwarmen voor het warmtekanon in de tent, David Lama extreem beduvelde toestand door de zaal waggelen en Johanna Ernst dichter en dichter bij de Nederlander Niki De Leeuw staan. Third Wave Ska

The Jam-Tex selector presents a new chapter in the “World of Reggae Music Collection” called “Third Wave Ska.”

The Jam-Tex selector has been working on a study and organization of the essential tracks of reggae music called “The World of Reggae Music Collection.” The selector invites others to comment on the selected tracks and to join in on the conversation about the history of reggae music. This collection of singles began with the greatest roots reggae hits in categories entitled: “Reggae’s Superstars: The Lions of Jah”and “Reggae’s Superstars: The Lion Youth.”

Now the selector moves back in time to the roots of reggae, exploring the greatest singles from the ska tradition. Please feel free to suggest your favorite singles. The examination of the ska genre included a focused study on the founders of ska music from the late 1950s to the 1960s called: “The Ska Originals.” The next post explored the “Two-Tone Ska” movement of the 1970s and 1980s often called the second wave of ska music. This post focuses on “Third Wave Ska” music that fused ska and elements of punk.

In the 1990s the revival of ska music, known as the third wave, came in a raw form with strong ties to the punk rock music scene. It’s no surprise since ska music comes with a fast-paced rollicking energy that appealed to young working-class youths. British and American punks ate up reggae and ska, and the sound fused well with rip-roaring punk rock. My favorites from this genre include Operation Ivy, Fishbone, Rancid, and Sublime. Brad Nowell of Sublime had a knack for making great third-wave ska punk rock.

The Aggrolites have mad a distinct impression on the third-wave ska movement, bringing their California soul-drenched sound to the mix. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are symbolic of this genre, laying grimy vocals over ska horns and rock guitars. Some of the great punk bands have made their own ska-infused tracks, including NOFX, Goldfinger, the Offspring, and even the hardcore punk group Propagandhi.

Propagandhi’s track “Ska Sucks” is really a critique of the ska revival. As a representative of the punk intelligentsia, Propagandhi questions everyone and everything, including authority, religion, and the quality of the ska revival. The song makes a captivating argument why the ska revival “sucks,” singing the message over a wonderful third wave ska sound.

When I scan the rows of comics at my local shop, I look for certain titles, characters, writers, but what obviously stands out the most is the art. I completely judge these books by their covers, that’s how I filter out what I’m gonna pick up out of the hundreds of books lining the wall. One of my favorite artists who always seems to catch my eye is Phil Noto. Noto’s done commercial and comic artwork, and no matter what character/book he’s drawing, the covers always come out beautifully. Here’s some of my favorite works of his:
