Jim Furyk has outplayed Ernie Els this year in just about every aspect. Els has never been the kind

Jim Furyk has outplayed Ernie Els this year in just about every aspect. Els has never been the kind of guy to stun anyone with his low scores, but he’ll find himself making the cut and lasting somewhere up at the top. Els actually won the US Open when it was held at the Congressional in 1997. Furyk will do the same thing, but has a good history at US Opens. Here come the stats:

Jim Furyk
2009*: 66-67-69-72
2008*: 70-68-67-66
2007*: 66-74-68-69
1997: 74-68-69-71

Ernie Els:
2009*: Did Not Play
1997: 71-67-69-69

* – Denotes AT&T National (Played at Congressional)

As you can see, Ernie Els hasn’t played there as often, but has had prior success at Congressional. Furyk’s tournament results may be slightly skewed because the course wasn’t set up for US Open difficulties, but it’s impressive nonetheless. I think I’ll take mentally sound Jim Furyk.

Pick: Jim Furyk

Again, the only main difference between Anthony Kim and Retief Goosen has been the number of events

Again, the only main difference between Anthony Kim and Retief Goosen has been the number of events played. Kim nearly doubles Goosen in rounds played. Here comes the stats.

Anthony Kim: 75
2010: Did Not Play
2009: Did Not Play
2008: Did Not Play
Average: 75

Retief Goosen: 68
2010: 72/68/68/68
2009: 68/67/71/70
2008: 75/78 – CUT
Average: 70.27

Anthony Kim clearly hasn’t had the experience at this course that he needs. Goosen has played here well as of late, scoring a 68 in his last 4 rounds there. Given those odds, and the fact that Kim played terribly yesterday, I’d say Goosen’s consistent basis will be shown today.

Pick: Retief Goosen

These two golfers have almost identical seasons going on right now. In fact, they both carry a 71.4 scoring average throughout this season. Let’s cut to the chase in this week’s St. Jude Classic.

Jason Bohn: 35
2010: Did Not Play
2009: 36/35/34/36
2008: Did Not Play
Average: 35.2

D.J. Trahan: 36
2010: 35/32/36/34
2009: 34/34 – CUT
2008: Did Not Play
Average: 34.43

Another week that we have a Par 35 9 holes, which makes these picks very difficult to call. The Tie is an incredible advantage having such a tough 9 to score on.

Pick: Jason Bohn/Tie

Dustin Johnson has played more rounds this year, but also has had more success than Sergio Garcia.

Dustin Johnson has played more rounds this year, but also has had more success than Sergio Garcia. Sergio hasn’t found his swing for a few years, but has been putting the ball phenomenally as of late. He might need that today in order to beat Johnson’s booming drives. Dustin isn’t always the most accurate, which can hurt him on this course. Let’s see how they’ve done:

Dustin Johnson: 66
2010: 67/68/72/67
2009: 68/65/66/66
2008: 68/73/73/76
2007: Did Not Play
Average: 68.85 (Average 2nd Round: 68.67)

Sergio Garcia: 66
2010: Did Not Play
2009: Did Not Play
2008: 71/70/65/75
2007: 71/70/71/75
Average: 70.44 (Average 2nd Round: 70)

Sergio got a little lucky yesterday with an eagle 2 on 11, and I doubt that will happen again. Dustin booms the ball down the holes, which makes this course a lot smaller for him and much easier for him to post low numbers. He has had great results at the Byron Nelson and only 3 rounds above a 70, compared to Sergio’s 5 with less rounds played.

Pick: Dustin Johnson

Both of these golfers have had eerily similar years. They both have made two cuts and both are righ

Both of these golfers have had eerily similar years. They both have made two cuts and both are right around the same money leaderboard standings. It’ll be interesting to see how they fared in the past here at the Byron Nelson.

Ben Crane: 35
2010: 33/33/37/35
2009: 35/34/37/32
2008: 36/37 – CUT
2007: 36/34/37/34
Average: 35 (Average 2nd Round: 34.5)

Carl Pettersson: 38
2010: 37/37 – CUT
2009: 35/34 – CUT
2008: 35/33/33/36
2007: 36/35/35/33
Average: 34.92 (Average 2nd Round: 34.75)

Based on these scores you might say it was pretty close, but this pick seems like a fairly obvious one to me. Ben Crane has a lower average at the Byron Nelson. That being said, it’s not an easy course to simply just shoot 4-under on the front nine. It takes skillful control and the right timing on the par 5s to score low. I think Pettersson with the draw has the slight advantage here, aside from firing a 38 on Thursday.

Pick: Carl Pettersson

Both of these guys have been playing extremely well this year. They’re both almost perfect on

Both of these guys have been playing extremely well this year. They’re both almost perfect on cuts made and the only big difference is that Nick Watney has a win this year and Kuchar has played more rounds. While playing more rounds however, he also has a lower average round score on the season. Let’s check their past at the Byron Nelson:

Nick Watney:
2010: Did Not Play
2009: Did Not Play
2008: 75/68/68/72
2007: 72/71 – CUT
2006: 74/64/71/73
Average: 70.8 (Average First Round: 73.67)

Matt Kuchar:
2010: Did Not Play
2009: 70/69/68/68
2008: 71/71/70/73
2007: 72/68/69/69
2006: Did Not Play
Average: 69.83 (Average First Round: 71)

As you can see, Kuchar is not only more familiar with the course, but also scores almost a stroke better than Watney each round. As a golfer myself, knowing the course is extremely important and that advantage will push Matt Kuchar to a win.

Pick: Matt Kuchar

Charley Hoffman has played in 8 more events this year than Scott Verplank, but Scott has had more Top 10s and has a better “Made Cut” ratio (6/7 tournaments). Verplank also has a lower average round score, but that obviously is from a smaller sample size than Hoffman. Here’s their stats:

Charley Hoffman:
2010: 36/34 – CUT
2009: 34/32/33/34
2008: 34/34/36/39
2007: 37/33 – CUT
Average: 34.67 (Average First Round: 35.25)

Scott Verplank:
2010: 35/33/35/33
2009: 36/34 – CUT
2008: 34/33/39/40
2007: 34/33/31/32 – Champion
Average: 34.43 (Average First Round: 34.75)

I’d stay away from this one, but if you have to pick, Scott Verplank has had more success in the first round. That being said, it’s not hard to lose a shot either way on this front 9. Avoid it completely on a W streak. Pick Verplank on your L.

Toms has been playing the golf of his life firing two 62s on Thursday and Friday of the Crowne Plaza Invitational. Charlie Wi has also played very well, shooting a 64 and 67 respectively. There’s clearly a difference in their scores and I feel like Toms won’t let up off the gas. He’s just playing his game and will keep knocking it close to the pin every time.

David Toms: 62/62
2010: 68/67/68/65
2009: 67/72/65/69
2008: 72/69/66/70
Average: 67.36 (Third Round Avg: 66.3)

Charlie Wi: 64/67
2010: 68/69/69/77
2009: 67/70/66/67
2008: 71/70/67/68
Average: 68.57 (Third Round Avg: 67.3)

Take that for what it’s worth, but it looks like Toms is the pick here. He’s playing really well right now, and he has better history at The Colonial.

Ben Crane has made the cut in 8 of the 9 events he’s played in this year. His scoring average

Ben Crane has made the cut in 8 of the 9 events he’s played in this year. His scoring average is 0.6 lower than Pat Perez’s, but for some reason didn’t bring his A-Game to the course on Thursday, shooting a 75. Perez fired a not much better 71. I’m not too sure about this match-up given that both of these golfers didn’t play the course very well yesterday. The front 9 seemed to give them trouble as well.

Ben Crane: 39 yesterday
Fairway %: 64.3 GIR%: 50.0 Average Putts: 2.0
2010: 32/33/33/33 (T-3rd)
2009: 34/34/37/33 (T-46th)
2008: 34/35/35/34 (5th)
2007: Did Not Play
Average: 34.3 (2nd Round Front 9: 34)

Pat Perez: 37 yesterday
Fairway %: 21.4 GIR%: 55.6 Average Putts: 1.8
2010: 34/36/33/32 (T-10th)
2009: Did Not Play
2008: 37/36/34/32 (6th)
2007: 33/34/32/34 (4th)
Average: 34.2 (2nd Round Front 9: 35.33)

As you can see, both of these golfers have had some success at the Crowne Plaza Invitational over the years. The Par 35 front 9 is a very difficult call to make because of the limited opportunities for easy pars. Honestly if you have over a W1, I’d probably stay away. These guys both haven’t played well and it’s almost a complete toss-up. Perez missed fairways, Crane missed putts. I think giving Ben Crane the tie is a great option here. He’s bound to not miss as many putts as last time, and with him hitting his fairways, it shouldn’t be too difficult of a time.

Pick: Ben Crane

Jason Day has been playing well the last few years and it seems like he’s going to stay in the Top 25 for a while. Sergio Garcia on the other hand has had struggles his whole career. Never clinching a major and nothing of significant note to his name, but he’s been consistent enough to score. Sergio Garcia hasn’t had a spectacular year, earning himself only one Top 10 this year. Jason Day has 5 Top 10s and is playing very well lately as three of those have come in the last three events he’s played in.

Jason Day:
2010: 66/71/68/69
2009: 65/65/65/69
2008: 77/67 – CUT
Average: 68.2 (First Round Avg: 69.3)

Sergio Garcia:
2010: Did Not Play
2009: Did Not Play
2008: Did Not Play
Season Average: 70.6

Based on what we know of Sergio and Jason, I’d probably guess that Jason Day will play better, as he has all season. Sergio is inexperienced on this course and isn’t having the greatest of years so far.

Anthony Kim and Rocco Mediate haven’t had the most spectacular seasons as of late. Kim has missed the cut in 3 of his last 4 tournaments, while Mediate has 2 missed cuts and 1 withdrawal in his last 4. Kim has the edge this year in performance averaging 71.5 and making 7 cuts this year. Mediate has a poor 73.4 and made only 4 cuts. Let’s take a look at their history at the Colonial.

Anthony Kim:
2010: Did Not Play
2009: 32/33/35/38
2008: 34/36/35/34
2007: 33/35/38/33

As play continues Sunday midway through round 3 this prop is once again picking on the famous 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass. Thus far the most common result on this hole both in the props and amongst the whole field has been par 3. So more than likelyGraeme McDowell should par the hole. However, he has had mixed results thus far in the tournament. In the first round McDowell did indeed par the hole, in Round two McDowell ran into trouble however, and put up a bogey. So what will happen today? With pin placement getting harder and harder as the rounds go on I think a Birdie is pretty unlikely, so the question now is, will McDowell Par or Bogey the hole. In my opinion I think the odds would suggest a Par, I think it’s unlikely he bogeys the same hole two rounds in a row and especially when you’re looking at a par 3 which he should be able to green on the first shot. The Pin placement will prevent a birdie but he should be able two put and win the prop on this one.

David Toms has been on tour for 22 years. His role as the “crafty veteran” has set in and it’s landed him atop the leader board. Yet Nick Watney, 4th on the money list, has also played very well at TPC Sawgrass, ending up just one stroke behind Toms’ pace. They both got there in different ways though. Toms has only 2 Top 10s, Watney has 5 and a victory.

David Toms:
2011: 66/68
2010: 71/72 CUT
2009: 67/70/77/70
Average: 70.125

Nick Watney:
2011: 64/71
2010: 69/71/68/73
2009: 68/78 CUT
Average: 70.25

This is a very close match-up and will come down to one bad hole for either golfer. I think I would go with the more “explosive” Watney instead of the cool collected “Par-master” David Toms.

Pick: Nick Watney

#1 vs #2 in the Money List this year. Donald has posted an impressive 69.6 scoring average along with firing a 69 in Thursday’s opening round of THE PLAYERS Championship. Bubba’s not far behind with a 70.3, but played poorly yesterday with only 2 birdies and shot a 76. Donald is playing extremely well this year, finishing in 6 Top 10s and winning the Accenture Match Play Championship. Obviously a tough competitor to beat. Watson has 3 Top 10s along with 2 victories, one at the Zurich Classic a few weeks ago, and one at the Farmers Insurance Open early in the year. No doubt that they both have the skills to post low numbers at TPC Sawgrass or any course that they play at.

Luke Donald:
2010: 67/69/72/75
2009: 74/70/71/73
2008: 75/72/74/72

Bubba Watson:
2010: 71/73 CUT
2009: 67/75/72/74
2008: 76/73 CUT

If you haven’t noticed the trend yet, Donald is consistently better than Watson at TPC Sawgrass, not to mention especially in the 2nd round. Watson is a better player this year, but I don’t think his booming drives will quite do the trick.

Pick: Luke Donald

Dustin Johnson went out on TPC Sawgrass and posted a solid even par 72. While doing that, he got a par on the island hole, the Par 3 17th. There’s not much to say about this one man, one hole, prop bet, so we’ll cut to the chase.

As I stated with Rickie Fowler’s pick yesterday, the average in 2010 on the 17th was a 3.01.

Dustin Johnson
2011: 3
2010: 3/2/3/5
2009: 3/3/2 WD

Obviously par is the most common score on this hole and I don’t think the odds are very good to make birdie, but if you’d like, you can at least see what golfers are doing before him that day because the pin could be very accessible. Just a heads up.

Pick: Johnson: Par (3)

Jason Bohn and Geoff Ogilvy played completely different rounds on Thursday. Bohn had 3 birdies and two bogies for a nice one-under 71. Geoff Ogilvy took quite a different approach when he made 4 birdies and had 6 holes above par, including a double on the Par 5 16th.

Bohn is averaging 71.2 to Ogilvy’s 70.4 this year on tour. Most of you can probably determine that yes, Ogilvy is a better player than Bohn. I mean Bohn’s best finish this year was in 19th at the Mayakoba Golf Classic and that was in late February. Ogilvy finished 4th at the Masters and finished 9th at the Accenture Match Play Championship.

Geoff Ogilvy
2011: 40 (+4)
2010: 38/35 CUT
2009: 35/37/36/35
2008: 40/37 CUT
Average: 37

Jason Bohn
2011: 35 (-1)
2010: 34/39/34/41
2009: 37/35/35/36
2008: 37/38/42/40
Average: 37.15

I’d tend to stay away from this. There’s not enough disparity between the two golfers to make a clear cut decision. Ogilvy is playing better this year, but as you can see, their histories here are very close and comparable. If anything, Bohn has played comparably at TPC Sawgrass on Day 2′s Back 9 than Ogilvy and has the Tie option, seems like a no brainer.

Pick: Jason Bohn or tie

Rickie Fowler will be bringing his clubs along with his outfits to this year’s Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. After a long day under the sun, the 17th hole and a whole lot of water come into play. The famous island hole has claimed many balls over the years, but hopefully not Rickie Fowler’s!

2010: 3/4 – CUT

That’s all I can tell you about his history at TPC Sawgrass aside from that the course average on the hole was 3.01 in 2010. These friendly Thursday pins should allow him to easily make a par, it’s the birdie we have to be worried about, but I don’t think he’ll get one on Day 1.

Pick: Rickie Fowler: Par (3)

These two golfers are coming into this tournament playing very well. Woodland is 8th on this year’s money list having had 4 Top 10s and a win at the Transitions Championship. Mickelson is 5th on the money list, also having 4 Top 10s and a win at the Shell Houston Open. Let’s get to the nitty gritty about both of them at TPC Sawgrass.

Phil Mickelson
2010: 70/71/66/74 – T-17th
2009: 73/71/71/76 – T-55th

Gary Woodland hasn’t played in a Players Championship yet, but is averaging 70.1 this year compared to Phil’s 70.

I’d stay away from this one for two reasons: the first being because it’s not a very easy pick. The second is because you streakers don’t want to waste 4-5 hours not picking. Anyways, I’m going with Lefty.

Speaking of ridiculous golf bets, we’ve got another one for you! Tiger Woods and Martin Kaymer will team up playing TPC Sawgrass’ famous Island Par 3 – 17th hole. This hole is one of the most infamous in golf and has had some incredible moments in its past. Here’s a quick rundown of what you’ll need to know.

In 2010, the average score was a 3.01.

Martin Kaymer on 17th
2010: 2/2/3/3
2009: 2/3/2/3

Tiger Woods on 17th
2010: 3/3/4 and then Withdrew
2009: 3/3/2/3

As you can see, these friendly Thursday pins tend to produce at least one birdie in the group and no bogies. Odds are, those two combined will easily total a 5 or 6.

Pick: Tiger + Kaymer: 5 or 6 strokes

Thursday rolls around and you all know that means we get these crazy golf prop bets! We start off with an Ernie Els and Lucas Glover front 9 sprint match. I tend to stay away from these on principle. Golf is a very finicky sport, especially in 9 holes on the PGA Tour. With that being said, Ernie Els isn’t the same golfer as he used to be. During the 90′s he was always competing for championships, but as of late, he generally plays okay and ends up somewhere near the Top 25 in tournaments. In The Heritage tournament at Harbour Town, he failed to make the cut, shooting a 75 and 78. Lucas Glover on the other hand has been playing really well. Coming off of a win at the Wells Fargo Championship where he went 67/68/69/69 and won in a playoff. What you might want to be wary about though is that the three starts before that, he missed the cut in all of them.

Ernie Els – Averages 72.1 Good Stat: 2 Top 10 finishes at TPC Sawgrass in the last four years.
2010: 74/71 – Missed Cut

Lucas Glover – Averages 70.6
2010: 70/65/69/70 – 3rd

With all of this being said, I still think Glover can edge out Els.

Pick: Lucas Glover
