The Men Who Stare at Goats, starring George Clooney and Ewan McGreggor.

McGreggor plays Bob Wilton, a midwestern American journalist compelled to travel to Iraq and write a life-changing story after his wife leaves him for his editor. In Iran while waiting to cross the boarder, he meets Lyn Cassady (Clooney), a man Wilton discovers is a former member of the First Earth Battalion, a group of psychic spies trained secretly by the government.

Cassady is the most powerful government trained psychic spy, who once killed a goat just by staring at it. Turns out, Cassady is wrecked with grief about killing an innocent animal and is crossing into Iran seeking redemption by freeing a group of goats being held in captivity by the government for psychic testing. Wilton joins Cassady to complete his mission in the hopes of finding a story.

Now, I had no idea what the hell this movie was about when I went to go see it. I only knew I’m always up for McGreggor and Clooney for two hours. I asked my date if he knew. “It’s about goats,” he replied, “some guy can kill ‘em with his mind”. I had heard it received mixed reviews.

Using goats as mind murder test subjects was a real experiment used by the paranormal military program. It is used as an example in The Men Who Stare At Goats by Ron Johnson, a book that examines connections between paranormal military programs and psychological techniques being used for interrogation in the War on Terror (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Men_Who_Stare_at_Goats).

So what happened here was a writer read this book and decided to turn one tiny example into a feature film. Remember in English class when you were told to write an original short story based on a recent news article? It’s a really good exercise. What I like about this scenario is that the writer chose to evolve complete fiction from a single fleeting fact, instead of writing a movie based wholly on facts.

I love bio pics and movies inspired by true events. JFK, Blow, Good Morning Vietnam, Selena, Catch Me If You Can, and The Way We Were are all great movies based on history. But as we learned from Citizen Kane in Film 101, the way people are perceived from memory is rarely who they truly were. Sometimes a true story feature can become hard to follow or feel rushed because there are so many facts that piece the puzzle together. A two-hour movie cannot possibly show the full picture. Bad acting, direction, or writing could also muddle a movie’s depiction of events. Changeling starring Angelina Jolie is an example of this type of bad true-life movie (If you enjoy watching Jolie sob uncontrollably and look helpless for almost three hours while maintaining zero to little sympathy for her character, Changeling is for you). What’s fun about The Men Who Stare At Goats is that it was based on only one fact, with a ton of fictional characters and obstacles created around it.

It’s a fun movie, definitely unique. I prefer when McGreggor uses his native accent rather than Americanizing his speech, but George Clooney was most energetic and fit for a man pushing fifty. I’d recommend seeing The Men Who Stare At Goats over The Twilight Saga: New Moon or Old Dogs, but I’d sooner recommend Fantastic Mr. Fox or Ninja Assassin over Goats if you were looking to attend the cinema this week.

Some fluorescent veg and salad is having a peak at the shoreline, but it’s really not for mixing. There’s a party in there and it’s invite only.

I prod with two short chop sticks and can’t help noticing that such a fluid dinner surely requires more than two sticks for consumption. Asian food is just not cut out for chop sticks. British food, sausages and steak, big hunks of meat, yeah sure, the sticks would be fine. But slippery strands of rice and cumbersome balls of meat prove more elusive than Jordan’s integrity.

I had asked for spicy, and I got a moderate burn but we’re not talking super hot here. On the scale of hotness we were definitely at the Babestation girls level, the gap-eyed hanging mouth bunch who were liberated from the local park by a sleazy agent in a secondhand BMW who told them they would be famous if they put down the white lightning amd sucked his cock. Hot is was not.

But tasty it was, in a sort of unfamiliar way. It was a stumble into a new beginning and trying to find your bearings but quite enjoying the disorientation. It’s the feeling when you learn to drive and you realise that you could drive where you wanted when you wanted and the weight of possibility crushed your consciousness so much you had your first crash. (I will take this moment to apologise to the person who’s wing mirror I took off with my wing mirror. And I apologise for driving off quickly.)

I finished it and dabbed my mouth. Vietnam. I have eaten you. And I didn’t mind it.

For me, that is a high compliment.

You know the name Satchmo then you know Louis Armstrong. So no introduction is needed, or is there?

I remember seeing Robin Williams’ movie ‘Good Morning, Vietnam’ and hearing at the end an enchanting song.

Of course it was ‘What A Wonderful World’.

This Louis Armstrong song, which has become iconic in its usage in movies and TV shows, sold fewer than 1,000 copies in the U.S. when it was released in 1968. The good people of the U.K. heard it differently, however, and took the song to number one across the pond.

“What a Wonderful World” finally made the charts stateside in 1971, when it was released in memoriam following the death of Louis Armstrong. It took an ironic use of the song during depressing scenes in the movie Good Morning, Vietnam (which has been done to death now, producers, so stop already) to take it to the top of the American charts.

Written by Bob Thiele and George David Weiss, the optimistic song is only two minutes, seventeen seconds long. For reasons beyond my simple understanding, it’s now being played as a Christmas song. Could it be the first line: “I see trees of green…”? Or is it its general feeling of goodwill toward men (“I see friends shaking hands, say how do you do/They’re really saying ‘I love you.’”)?

It’s black, it’s shiny, it can hold up to 80GB of my favourite music, and I couldn’t go a day without it. Ah, the iPod Classic. Actually, I’m not sure if it IS an iPod Classic as it also holds video. I should really look that up.

Anyway, I know it’s overdone and cliched but this thing holds hours of entertainment for me and I don’t know where I’d be without it. It’s named Poddy the Second, as I previously had a fantastic 4GB mini, which I loved equally. It was blue and metallic, and – you guessed it – named Poddy.

Immer noch ist der Einsatz der Bundeswehr am Hindukusch, um die Münchener U-Bahn, die Strassen Köln-Kalks und Berlin sicherer zu machen, kein Krieg, ja, nicht einmal ein Polizeieinsatz. Er ist lediglich eine wahlvorbereitende Maßnahme, um die Opposition, die moderaten Taliban, von der demokratischen Ausübung ihrer Rechte, die Wählenden umzubringen, abzuhalten. Da sind sie den deutschen etablierten Parteien schon etwas voraus, die lassen nur mit Steinen und Flaschen werfen oder diffamieren sie als NAZIS, na, jeder weiss, das das nichts ist, was das Ansehen hebt. Jedenfalls nicht in Deutschland. Kommt man sich da nicht vor, wie Adrian Cronauer, der in seinem Studio von einem Verkehrsstau auf dem Ho-Chi-Min-Pfad erzählt, weil dort ein Wasserbüffel verunglückt ist?

Jedenfalls müssen wir keine Furcht haben, dass der Krieg zu uns kommt, wie 11 Prozent der Befragten einer Befragung ganz intensiv fürchten, die nun einmal nötig ist, in einer parlamentarischen Demoskopie, da sonst die Regierenden gar nicht wüssten, wie sie regieren sollten, sind die Wahlprogramme doch sowieso nur noch Eintagsfliegen. Der Krieg ist ja längst hier.

Übrigens auch vor jeglicher militärischer Beteiligung der Bundeswehr. Angst vor den hier versammelten Terroristengruppen, die wechselseitig aus einheimischen linkssozialistischen Erdlöchern kriechen, aus dem schönen Kurdistan kommen, aus dem Libanon, Saudi-Arabien, aus dem fernen Uigurien oder den heimischen Moscheen, hat allerdings niemand der Besorgten , was wesentlich angenehmer ist für den Räuber, Mörder und Messerstecher, denn ein argloses Opfer schwitzt nicht so stark und macht auch wesentlich weniger Arbeit.

Und es ist auch angenehmer, wenn es einen zu Konferenzen einlädt, das Opfer, der Wolf, der zuvor die Grossmutter verspeist hatte, pflegte ja auch erst eine Weile mit Rotkäppchen zu plaudern, um ihm die krankhafte, völlig irrationale Angst vor dessen spitzen Ohren, seinem grossen Maul und den riesigen Augen zu nehmen.

Immerhin, Leute davon abzuhalten, die Ausübung demokratischer Rechte wahrzunehmen, hat in Deutschland einen ganz niedrigen Stellenwert in der Bevölkerung. “Warum müssen die wählen? Wir tun es doch auch nicht!” und “wenn die Parteien da unten nicht CDU, SPD oder GRÜNE heissen, dann kann das doch keine Demokratie sein, nicht mal DIE PARTEI tritt an, die immer RECHT hat!”  Und das stimmt natürlich. Wahre Demokratie kommt von unserem Parteiensystem. Jedenfalls von den etablierten. Und die wachen eifersüchtig, wie die moderaten Taliban, dass ja keine Konkurrenz erwächst. Da sei Wolfgang Thierse vor.

So kann das ja nichts werden mit dem Aufbau:

Pensemos en qué es lo que denominamos actualmente “cine juvenil”: ¿es el cine protagonizado por jóvenes? ¿El de dibujos animados? ¿El que nos toma a todos por chavales hormonados? ¿El que da por sentado que el cerebro de los adultos se halla todavía en formación y que tanto da un público que otro? ¿El que ofrece con fines de puro entretenimiento historias con tratamiento arquetípico, ligero, previsible, con educadoras y formadoras intenciones de moraleja? ¿El que asume como propios aquellos aspectos y presupuestos que, generalmente inoculados por la publicidad, convencionalmente atribuimos a los jóvenes de nuestra época? Pensemos en el cine “juvenil” que se estrena hoy en día: ¿va dirigido realmente a los jóvenes o más bien se pretende convertir a todo el público en juvenil? ¿Las historias que relata realmente están diseñadas para el público de esa edad? El cine juvenil es todo lo enunciado más arriba, pero sobre todo, cabe concluir visto el panorama, que la categoría anteriormente conocida como cine juvenil y que tantos y tan buenos productos ofrecía, ya no existe, las barreras de edad a la hora de escoger determinados productos han desaparecido, como antes sucedió con la literatura y con la música popular o comercial. El problema, es que esta igualdad entre público adulto y joven no se ha hecho al alza, por un extraordinario desarrollo intelectual o una madurez adelantada de nuestros jóvenes, sino a la baja, por todo lo contrario, la idiotización masiva de cantidades ingentes de público adulto y de quienes diseñan productos planos y banales para ellos en aras de la creatividad con fines comerciales y de la eterna, y deliberadamente tendenciosa, confusión entre el concepto de entretenimiento y el de pasatiempo. Demos un paso más; pensemos en las revistas especializadas en música: ¿qué hueco ocupan en ellas los discos infantiles o juveniles (aunque la música de muchos artistas de “renombre” en realidad parezca dirigida a ellos)? Con suerte, un apéndice reducido al final. Sigamos con las revistas literarias con cierto rigor: ¿qué espacio dedica a la literatura infantil o juvenil, fenómenos editoriales masivos aparte? Pensemos ahora en las revistas o programas de televisión de cine que acaparan el mercado: ¿cuántas películas realmente, de entre las que aparecen, parecen estar dirigidas a gente adulta y pensante por sí misma? El resultado de la comparación es evidente. Y desolador.

Como en casi todo lo relacionado con la excesiva importancia que se da al éxito recaudatorio en el cine de hoy, la cosa empieza en George Lucas, adalid del cine juvenil por excelencia y, sobre todo, por su compinche Steven Spielberg, ambos grandes directores de productos para jóvenes, pensados y diseñados para ellos (lo cual es muy distinto a pensar y diseñar un producto para infantilizar adultos, empeño casi exclusivo de la mayor parte del Hollywood actual en la pretendida consecución de un continuado éxito “fácil”) que además son muy del gusto del público de más edad, auténticas obras maestras del entretenimiento, y que sin embargo, salvo alguna excepción puntual, han fracasado repetidamente cada vez que han intentado madurar sus productos para un público más activo, exigente o preparado. Pero el éxito ha provocado la (mala) imitación del modelo hasta la saciedad, la invasión de todos los géneros y temáticas, y la confusión de productos y destinatarios, error éste al que la mayor parte del público, americano en su mayoría pero cada vez más también fuera de Estados Unidos, se ha entregado en lo que es un fenómeno incomprensible de síndrome de Peter Pan colectivo: el cine juvenil ha terminado copando todo lo que se conoce como cine de entretenimiento, con la connivencia de un público que justifica su autoindulgencia en la coartada de que no se acude al cine a pensar, a ver desgracias, sino, simplemente, para evadirse de un mundo demasiado feo, como si lo que viera en las salas lo mejorara. Más que síndrome de Peter Pan constituye un ejercicio de autosedación, de voluntaria adicción a una droga que desactive las neuronas. Sin embargo, tanto Lucas como Spielberg no dejaron en el mejor momento de sus respectivas carreras de apostar por productos dignos y cuidados para el público joven (sus filmografías como productores dan fe) y El secreto de la pirámide es un buen ejemplo de ello.

Dirigida por Barry Levinson, reputado pero muy irregular director capaz de filmar las estimables Diner, Good Morning Vietnam, Rain Man, La cortina de humo, y también los bodrios Bugsy, Acoso o Bandits, la película fantasea con la juventud de dos de los más grandes y celebérrimos personajes de la literatura universal: Sherlock Holmes y el doctor Watson. Ambos son alumnos internos de un prestigioso y estricto colegio londinense, Holmes, brillante, algo excéntrico, orgulloso de su superior capacidad de raciocinio, ansioso de retos que permitan demostrárselo a él mismo y a los demás; Watson es tímido, apocado, escéptico y poco atrevido. Ambos conviven con el resto de estudiantes, con un viejo profesor que imparte allí sus clases, y con la nieta de éste, justo en una época en la que en Londres se está cometiendo una serie de misteriosos asesinatos relacionados con un oscuro y ancestral ritual del antiguo Egipto. Los jóvenes Holmes y Watson, junto a la chica, se zambullen en la investigación del caso cuando el anciano profesor muere asesinado, y descubren que el móvil del crimen guarda relación con una antigua sociedad secreta que hunde sus raíces en los lejanos orígenes de su propio colegio…

Entretenida, magníficamente ambientada, interpretada con convicción y estilo adecuado, no sólo a la propia película, sino a la icónica memoria que de estos personajes inmortales conservan millones de lectores y espectadores de todo el mundo, sin banalizar, ridiculizar, devaluar o elucubrar en demasía, la película nos ofrece aventuras, intriga, misterio, gotas de acción, y un guión, obra del experto en literatura y cine infantil y juvenil Chris Columbus, que, dirigido al público juvenil, no traiciona en ningún caso el espíritu de la época o de los personajes, la idiosincrasia con que Conan Doyle los creó, y que, además, siempre sin salirse de los estrictos perfiles psicológicos de ambos, se permite aventurar acerca de cuestiones tales como el origen de las señas de identidad del famoso detective (vestimenta, pipa, gusto por la química, el violín o las sustancias psicotrópicas) o de algunos de los personajes que salpican sus aventuras literarias, desde el inspector Lestrade hasta su interminable rivalidad con el profesor Moriarty, para cuya ambigua relación se ofrece aquí un origen hipotético de lo más verosímil. Más que estimable en cuanto a puesta en escena y recreación de una atmósfera, en plena era victoriana, que invita al misterio y a la intriga y que tampoco está reñida con la construida por Conan Doyle, incorpora una serie de efectos especiales, quizá un poco ingenuos y cutres vistos hoy en día, pero plenamente justificados (los asesinados han sufrido la intoxicación por una droga que les hace ver de todo antes de morir, por lo general, a causas “naturales” provocadas por las alucinaciones a las que asisten), juega con hipotéticas explicaciones acerca de orígenes y experiencias vitales de los personajes previamente al momento en que su autor los presentó a los lectores de todo el mundo, y además entretiene y divierte.

Paradigma de lo que debería ser el cine juvenil, la adecuación de un producto a las capacidades, sensibilidades e intereses de este tipo de público para, al mismo tiempo que les ofrece diversión, servirles de estímulo para una futura aproximación, un conocimiento y descubrimiento de obras originales que desarrollan los mismos temas en profundidad, sin estar ya desposeídos de fárrago y digresiones quizá excesivas para el público joven, por desgracia a día de hoy nos enfrentamos con dos recuperaciones de la obra de Conan Doyle que, lejos de ofrecernos historias respetuosas con el cariz de las tramas y de los personajes, amenazan, una vez más y tal como se ha advertido en los primeros párrafos de este artículo, con profundizar en la devaluación, estupidización e infantilización de personajes, obras e ideas que están muy bien como las concibió su autor, sin que sea preciso que un mendrugo ex-marido de Madonna (lo cual ya dice bastante) se reinvente un Holmes espadachín que se deja atar desnudo en una cama con un bombín sobre sus partes y un Watson que va repartiendo estopa por los suburbios londinenses. Una vez más, por dinero, desde dos proyectos paralelos, uno devaluando las aventuras de Holmes y Watson a mero espectáculo de acción, y el otro, basándose no en Conan Doyle sino en un cómic, se amenaza con destrozar cualquier aspecto que recuerde a los Holmes y Watson originales. Ambos proyectos, vendidos para adultos, resultan así, a expensas del visionado de ambos, si se confirman los pésimos augurios que diversas informaciones e imágenes han avanzado, responsables de un sacrilegio que, curiosamente, pese a estar dirigida a público joven y supuestamente más inmaduro que Guy Ritchie, la cinta de Levinson elude por completo en su intención, magníficamente conseguida, de fantasear con los personajes desde el respeto y no desde la imbecilidad.

Not gonna lie – I’m not a fan of war movies.  Granted, depending on my mood, I might be persuaded to sit down and watch a couple bloody hours of awesomeness.  Most often, a boy toy convinces me to watch one and I do all I can to spend the entire time making-out with him rather than actually watching to movie.

Now that I’ve laid that down, in honor of Memorial Day I’d like to give special attention to those movies that actually made me stop the tongue dance and watch the action (on the screen…not under the blanket).  Here’s my (very uninformed) list of the 10 greatest war movies:

The Patriot: Lots of blood and guts, but the costumes make this movie a hit for me.  Plus, Heath Ledger is pretty awesome as an innocent boy who just wants to fight for the country he thought we should have.  Thanks, fictional homie.

Schindler’s List: This is  a must see on any movie list and should probably be your first reference for war movies.  Aside from the incredible performances and intricate plot, I’m lovin’ the black and white effect in this one.  And Liam Neeson?  Very yummy in his day.

The Big Red One: I saw this one while going through a Star Wars phase (…which may or may not still be going on), since it stars a young Mark Hamill [Luke Skywalker]  as a member of a famous heroic band of men.  It’s gritty, bloody, and emotionally satisfying.

Gone With the Wind: I’m gonna include this one because it shows the other side of the war – the home front.  It’s a masterpiece, from the incredible acting to the sweeping score.  I very much enjoy the costumes in this one as well (there might be a trend here…).

Tropic Thunder: So maybe this movie isn’t actually about a war, so much as a movie about a bunch of guys trying to make a movie about a war.  At any rate, there were guns and blood, so it counts.  Plus, it was funny and if you can make a war movie funny then you’ve got some talent, my friend.

Letters From Iwo Jima: I. Love. This. Movie.  It just yields so much win.  This may be because it shows a side of World War II that I’ve never seen before (the Japanese side) represented in a relatively non-biased way or it may be because of all the hot Asian dudes in uniform.  Either one.

Good Morning, Vietnam: I like my funny and I definitely like some rebellion, so Robin Williams really delivers for me in this movie.  As an added bonus, there are some pretty sweet war sequences to get your heart rate a-going.

Braveheart: So this doesn’t actually involve Americans, per se, but I think we can all relate to the basic themes of suppression and rebellion (Revolutionary War, much?).  And the kilts aren’t bad, either.

Pearl Harbor: I’ll say right now that this is one movie where I preferred the fight scenes to the so-called story line of the rest of the movie.  Being as the movie was poorly scripted and very corny, I’m gonna say bring on the guns!

The Pianist: Get the tissues out right now.  Adrian Brody takes us through all levels of WWII, from being a top musician down to starving in the crumbling remains of the Jewish ghetto.  Hope you didn’t like your heart in one piece, because it is so broken after you watch this movie.

W piątek było zakończenie radosnego roku szkolnego. Była zwyczajowa szopka na auli, pompatyczna przemowa pana dyrektora, przemowa przewodniczącego komitetu rady rodziców (kurfa, dłuższej nazwy nie było?) która w założeniu miała być równie pompatyczna, ale coś nie wyszło i była usiana błędami. Do tego były też sztuczne, podoklejane na kropelkę, uśmiechy, zewsząd leciało “To jeszcze kwiatki dla pani” oraz drugie klasy które – cholera wie po co – stały cały czas pod ścianami i robiły za sztuczny tłum. Cała radosna “impreza” na auli była zwieńczona galą Złotych Laurów, gdzie dumni rodzice mogli popatrzeć jak ich pociechy, będące z resztą no-life’ami które mają w oczach czytniki e-booków, odbierały nagrody za średnie wynoszące 5,7 (WTF) oraz za 100% frekwencje przez trzy lata. Zgroza, nie ma to jak nagradzać za bycie ubezwłasnowolnionym i bezmyślne wkuwanie każdego gówna, jakie zostanie im podsunięte, jeszcze trochę i dojdziemy do wizji świata przedstawionej w Equilibrium. Tak czy owak – pojawiła się próba wprowadzenia nutki “dowcipu” do całego przedsięwzięcia, za sprawą włączenia do całości w założeniu fajnych kategorii: “zaszkolny pielgrzym” i “Wielki nieobecny”. Ja osobiście strzeliłem w tym momencie srogiego facepalma, bo dokładnie takie same kategorie były na zakończniu w zeszłym roku i dwa lata temu, więc o jakiejkolwiek powtórce nie ma mowy. Część na auli skończyła się ogólną radością (Brakowało tylko, psia mać, czapeczek rzuconych w górę…) i udaliśmy się do klas, w których odpicowani do granic wychowawcy mieli dać nam świadectwa. Ja osobiście miałem ochotę podejść do mojej wychowawczyni i bezczelnie walnąć “Puk puk, kto jest po drugiej stronie makijażu?”. Trzy lata sprzeczania się z tą kobietą o znaczenie słowa humanity, trzy lata słuchania “nie masz racji”, trzy lata życia w cieniu praw sali 117*, trzy lata pokonywania przeszkód które rzucała nam pod nogi własnym opierdalaniem się,  a ona na koniec wstawia gadkę jaką to byliśmy cudowną klasą i jak będzie za nami tęsknić. Kobieto, gdzie byłaś ostatnie trzy lata, bo ja chyba miałem angielski i wychowawcze z kimś innym, albo chodziłem do innej klasy. Oczywiście zanim wydała nam świadectwa musieliśmy podpisać papiery w których zapewne oddawaliśmy jej swoją nerkę w razie wypadku, ale większość z nas miała na twarzy napisane “DAJ MI TEN PAPIER”. Moja matka naturalnie nie poszła (dzięki opatrzności!), ale wręczyła mi radośnie wielki bukiet róż z tekstem “Daj to Pani Wychowawczyni”. Szlaaaaag, matulu moja droga, za jakie grzechy!? Eniłej, dałem jej ten bukiet. I kiedy byłem o krok od zwycięstwa, otrzymania świadectwa, wychowawczyni stwierdziła że powie mi parę miłych słów w czasie, kiedy będzie uściskiwać moją dłoń.

To trwało pieprzoną wieczność. Czas zwolnił, przerwy między kolejnymi uderzeniami mojego serca były dość długie, by wszechświat umarł i narodził się ponownie. 12 razy. Kurz głośno opadał na podłogę, a słowa które wychodziły z ust wychowawczyni nigdy do mnie nie dotarły, zostały zapewne zdmuchnięte przez wiatr słoneczny, lub cokolwiek innego. W końcu dostałem upragniony papier i pragnąłem czem prędzej wynieść się z tego przeklętego* miejsca. W końcu wyszliśmy z sali 117 a następnie ze szkoły. Wróciłem do domu, zdjąłem garnitur będący strojem którego nienawidzę i włożyłem moje ukochane baggy jeans oraz koszulkę Mitsubishi Racing. Do wieży trafiła płyta Airbourne i tak zaczęły się wakacje. Denerwowanie sąsiadów pierwsza klasa, a to wszystko przy radosnych krzykach “Just one little glass makes the night go fast, you can have what you want if you pay the girls with cash!” w wykoaniu pana O’Keffe. Hell yeah.

Za tydzień matura. Uczę się. Dlatego gram w Burnouta Paradise po sieci do 3 w nocy

*Przeklęte miejsce, sala 117 – sala, w której przez 3 lata mieliśmy angielski. Podstawową zasadą jest “Jeśli tu wchodzisz, zostaw rację za drzwiami”; na przestrzeni trzech lat LO uformowały się prawa sali 117:

- Czas lekcji jest równy 45min^2 (2025min), w sytuacjach wyjątkowych 45min^3 (91125min);

- Ocena właściwa wynosi pierwiastek z oceny (opracowane na podstawie przykładu kolegi Pajlota, który odpowiedział na 4+, dostał zaś 2-);

- Kataklizmy nieważą na wydarzeniach w sali 117 (pewnego razu, na skutek serii zdarzeń, klasa została zalana wodą. Pisaliśmy wypracowanie mocząc nogi).

Na drodze moich prywatnych obserwacji wysnułem następującą hipotezę:

Drzwi do sali 117 stanowią wrota do innego wymiaru. Dowodzi tego fakt, że drzewa za oknem się nie ruszają, a z widocznego w oddali komina zawsze leci dym. Zawsze pionowo. Zaryzykuję stwierdzenie, że jest to coś na modłę świata z “Seksmisji” – jeśli wyszedłbym przez okno, napotkałbym zapewne planszę z namalowanym nań światem zewnętrznym, po przecięciu której mógłbym ujrzeć wszystko, zaczynając od  Syriusza A, na kwarkach i nagim Gordonie Brownie kończąc. Teorii o innym wymiarze dowodzi także fakt, iż komórki tam nie działają a urządzenia elektronicznez lubością się zawieszają. Nie wchodźcie tam, jeśli wam życie miłe.

“Lo que necesita es una buena mamada. A ver si le quitan la mala leche.”

Nadie puede negar que Robin Williams es cómico. En su extensa filmografía lo que más prevalecen son este tipo de películas, y el resto, las que ha intentado hacer de manera “seria” no nos terminaba de convencer, llegando a casos que nos chirriaban tanto como El hombre bicentenario, Williams con cara seria y sin hacer una mueca… no era creible. Por otra parte, nos encontramos algunas películas, serias donde el personaje de Williams es un bromista, en esas ocasiones la cosa si funciona bien, ya que a pesar de un argumento más o menos duro, el actor se siente como pez en el agua interpretando a su personaje. Este es el caso de Good Morning Vietnam, donde detrás de un personaje histérico, bromista y caricaturesco encontramos la dura historia de los vietnamitas.

Adrian Cronauer

Esta película no es la tipica de guerra, es más, no hay escenas de batallas, a lo sumo algunos planos y unas cuantas explosiones, poco más. En este caso, se ha querido ahondar en la relación entre los soldados norteamericanos asentados en las ciudades con los habitantes de estos lugares. Además, como aliciente, un Williams desatado como locutor de radio para las tropas, usando todas sus armas cómicas, y mostrándonos como el rock y el humor son las mejores armas para aumentar la moral de cualquiera.

La pena es que no se llegue a profundizar más en la situación de Vietnam con la ocupación yanki, y que una buena crítica se quede en algo superficial. No es un film con grandes miras, sino que busca llegar a un público muy amplio y calar algo, pero sin exceder, no sea que se cree rechazo y Robin Williams es otro aliciente más, para que todo el público se acerque a esta película y no le resulte molesto tener que pensar, en como se encontraban los vietnamitas con la guerra.

Lo que no podemos dejar de destacar, es la absolutamente genial banda sonora. Aunque sólo sea por ella, merece la pena con creces ver esta película.

Árið 1965 var Víetnamstríðið í algleymingi. Bandarískir hermenn höfðu barist í nokkur ár í tilgangslausu stríði að þeirra mati og var mórallinn einfaldlega í lágmarki. Tók bandaríski herinn þá upp á því að senda til Víetnam útvarpsmanninn Adrian Cronauer – í tilraun til þess að bæta mórallinn.

Þar byrjar sagan í Good morning Vietnam og er Adrian Cronauer(leikinn af Robin Williams) með sinn eigin útvarpsþátt sem hann stjórnar í Saigon – þáverandi höfuðborg S-Víetnam(nú  Ho Chi Minh borg). Í upphafi útvarpsþáttarins var það alltaf viðtekin venja hjá Cronauer að hálfpartinn öskra: “Gooooooooood moooooorning Vieeetnaaaam!” og er sú rulla frábær fyrir Robin Williams.

Í myndinni er fjallað um ýmis ævintýri sem Cronauer á að hafa lent í í Víetnam þar sem hann stjórnaði hnyttinn útvarpsþættinum sínum sem í raunveruleikanum var á sínum tíma vinsælasta stöffið sem bandarísku hermennirnir hlustuðu á.Í myndinni kynnist Cronauer einnig Víetnömskum strák og kallar það samband á drama í myndinni.  Myndin er semsagt í rauninni um veru útvarpsmannsins í Víetnam og varpar skemmtilegu ljósi á hlið sem ekki er oft fjallað um í stríðum.

Á vefsíðunni kvikmyndir.is skrifar  Þráinn Stefánsson mjög fína lýsingu á myndinni:

“Stórskemmtileg og eftirminnileg mynd. Í þessari mynd er tekið á Víetnamstríðinu á allt annan hátt heldur en áður hefur verið gert. Virkilega mannleg mynd; sorgleg og skemmtileg í senn. Robin Williams sýnir sannkallaðan stórleik hér og hefur – og mun líklegast aldrei – verið betri. Þetta er mynd sem allir ættu að geta haft gaman af, mjög skemmtileg og tónlistin spillir heldur ekki”

Á sama vef skrifaði Þórður Davíð Björnsson:

“Frábær stríðs-og gamanmynd með hinum einna sanna Robin Williams – í skemmtilegasta hlutverki sínu til þessa sem útvarpsmaður í Víetnamstríðinu. Þið verðið einfaldlega að sjá þessa mynd!”

Þessi mynd fær einnig 90% í dóma á RottenTomatoes.com og er það því ljóst að Robin Williams náði nánast einsamall að bera uppi heila kvikmynd. Þessi mynd er án efa ein óvenjulegasta stríðsmynd sögunnar og teljum við hana í rauninni skylduáhorf fyrir unga sem og aldna. Hvað þá sagnfræðibuffin!

Warning: Spoilers ahoy!

As is always the case when someone takes a cult story and makes it into a film, there’s going to be problems. All creative endeavours are open to dislike, but beloved masterpieces are trickier still. It’s not just about fidelity: it’s about emphasis, interpretation. One Watchmen review described this phenomenon thusly: that “every adaptation must be some kind of betrayal.” It’s a poignant observation, and one which applies equally to the act of criticism. More than at any other time, reviewing such a film declares our own biases, our own view of the original narrative, and lays the issue open to yet more disagreement, emotive or otherwise. I’ve come quite late to the Watchmen party – just in time to ensure that my husband, too, had read it before today’s screening – but even so, my attachment to the story is considerable. I went in feeling sceptical, but lightly optimistic. I hated 300, director Zack Snyder’s other big comics-originating blockbuster, with a fiery vengeance, but for reasons of plot as much as for the ludicrous stylisation. Then again, Sin City (by 300’s Frank Miller) and V for Vendetta (by Watchmen’s Alan Moore) are two of my favourite narratives ever. In other words, I was ready to be persuaded.

The opening scene of Watchmen – the murder of Edward Blake, the Comedian – made me angry. Being a long-time connoisseur of trashy action flicks, I’m hardly averse to either gore or gratuitously choreographed fightscenes, but this one left a sour taste. Apart from Dr Manhattan and, to a vastly lesser extent, Ozymandias, none of the watchmen are anywhere near approaching superhuman. Rather, they’re a squad of Batman-men: fit, fast, experienced and well-trained, but physically human. More importantly, Watchmen itself is a dark and gritty tale which, despite several violent protagonists, never makes violence seem cool. Combine these two facts, and Snyder’s lengthy, stylised combat betrays a profound misunderstanding of the source material, not just in the opening scene, but throughout the film.

It’s worth mentioning that Watchmen closely follows the arc of the graphic novel: precious few scenes are displaced from their original order, while a vast majority of the dialouge comes straight from Moore. The casting, effects and costuming, too, are brilliant: Billy Cruddup is excellent as the otherworldly Dr Manhattan,while Jackie Earle Haley’s Rorschach is chillingly superb. Nonetheless, for every moment of narrative satisfaction - Archimedes, Mars, the journal - there is another of jarring dislocation. The bizarre, overlong sex-scene between Dan and Sally is one such offence; the introduction of the energy crisis plotline is another. The most awful moment, however, comes as a giant Dr Manhattan stalks the fields of Vietnam, exploding VietCong to the thunderous chords of Ride of the Valkyries, at which point the desire to strangle Zack Snyder and demand to know why anyone, even the man who made 300, would think that Good Morning, Vietnam! was an appropriate point of reference. If a single scene could be said to epitomise the failings of Watchmen, then this is it.

Even so, it still came as a shock to reach the end and realise that, despite their by-and-large adherence to Moore’s work, the writers had taken it upon themselves to change the ending. I don’t mean millions of people didn’t die: I mean there was no psychic blast from a giant, dead, genetically-modified abomination of science. Rather, Ozymandias simply harnessed the power of Dr Manhattan and disintegrated citizens in cities around the world. From a distance, perhaps, this might seem neater, more personal, but up close, it robs us of the dead. It mutes the horror of cataclysm into something clinical, devoid of corpses, and instead of the world realistically banding together against the threat of creatures from another dimension, they unrealistically band together against a single American who, up until that point, had been publicly vaunted as both patriot and weapon. The psychology simply doesn’t hold: crazy and mad-science though the monster was, its purported origins ensued that no world power could be blamed for spawning it, while the choice of America-as-target humbled not only that government, but all who’d previously fought against them. Following the logic of Snyder’s version, given that multiple nations were attacked by (they believed) an essentially rogue American weapon, it seems decidedly counter-intuitive that they sue for peace rather than place blame. After all, Moore’s Watchmen is nothing if not a study in human nature. Take away his understanding of people, and you rob the story of its soul. 

Which, ultimately, is the film’s real problem. It looks, speaks and sometimes moves like Watchmen, but with every misstep, the realisation grows that some other, vastly less subtle intelligence is steering: even Rorschach’s name, phoenetically spelled in the book as raw shark, is mispronounced as raw shack. Great adaptors understand the betrayal of their actions, such that, rather than merely echoing form, they build on substance. Their changes respect the heart of the story, acknowledging that appearances, no matter how important, are still secondary. Snyder, by contrast, effects his changes clumsily, keeping the veneer at the expense of structural integrity. In this sense, his dedication to replicating Moore feels less like tribute and more like an acknowledgement that his own interpretation isn’t strong enough to stand alone. Scenes run long, slow and awkward in the transition between mediums, introducing cameo characters whose roles, though apparent to those of us who’ve read the comic, would doubtless confuse and frustrate a novice audience. As in recent adaptations of other books, notably the Harry Potter series, a not inconsiderable number of scenes in Watchmen count on the pre-existing knowledge of the viewer, rather than striving to be self-contained.

In a way, the absence of the Black Freighter Tales is symbolic of the film’s failure. Although this subplot – a comic within a comic – was always going to be extraordinarily difficult to reference cinematically, it perfectly mirrors the twisted actions of Adrian Veidt, showing us the rotten underbelly of Moore’s 1985 and epitomising the dark, uncertain morality of the minutemen. There’s moments of real enjoyment in Snyder’s work, and the length, despite the peg-legged gait of certain scenes, does not seem unduly, even though it nears the three hour mark. As a superhero film – an action film - it works, and many people will doubtless enjoy it on that level.  Certainly, there is no crime in doing so. But as a replication of Moore’s ethos, it fails. Like Dr Manhattan, the body is there, but the spirit is missing, evident only in occasional, haunting echoes. And for me, that says it all.

Tym razem funduję Wam mały mix osobistych przemyśleń na różne, nieraz randomowe temat – od szkoły i ferii, poprzez granie na dużym sprzęcie, po cioranie w ekskluzywne demo Resistance na PSP. Uderzajcie zatem w rozwinięcie, śmiało, nie gryzie :]

1. Ferie.

Ta cholerna przerwa, która zbliża się wielkimi krokami, na serio mnie rozleniwiła w temacie nauki. Nie chciało mi się dzisiaj iść na dodatkowy WoS, więc wcisnąłem kit matuli i się na tym przejechałem. Bywa, trzeba było lepiej zaplanować całą operację, a tak srogo zlamiłem. Efekt jest taki, że znalazłem w Empiku dobrą książkę, ale jako że nie miałem przy sobie kasy, muszę jechać do centrum raz jeszcze. Bah, i tak muszę jechać do centrum – po odbiór dowodu. To że składałem podanie o niego 3 miesiące nie znaczy, że kolejne 3 zajmie mi trafienie do ratusza. Istnieje spora szansa, że odbiór tego dokumentu (no co, minęły raptem 4 miesiące od urodzin…) nastąpi już jutro, ale nic nie obiecuję. Z resztą, pewnie i tak Was to mało obchodzi.

2. Granie na tym większym sprzęcie.

PS3 jest równo w obrotach, a to za sprawą Lost Planet, gry która może graficznie nie jest jakimś ah i oh, ale pod względem gameplayu miecie. Walki mechami, patent z linką do włażenia pod górkę, mnogość broni oraz naprawdę genialny klimat – to te ficzery stanowią o sile tego tytułu. Jak go skończę (jestem w 10/11 misji) pewnie pokuszę się o “małą” reckę tegoż tytułu, ale to jeszcze nie w tej chwili. Jest to chyba pierwsza od dłuższego czasu gra, którą się delektuję i nie lecę przez nią na wariata, siejąc zamęt w promieniu 360 stopni. Nie zrozumcie mnie źle, tu jest niemal tak samo, jednak staram się to robić w nieco bardziej wyrafinowany sposób. Co nie znaczy, że nie mam momentów w “Rage Mode”, kiedy to urządzam konkretną rozpierduchę za pomocą RPG czy karabinu plazmowego. Ale i tak najfajniejszą częścią tej gry są Mechy. W niektórych konstrukcjach widać inspirację Metal Gear’ami z serii MGS, tworzonej przecież przez samego Mistrza Hideo Kojimę, ale to można traktować tylko in plus. Tak jak wspomniałem – szersza wypowiedź na temat Zagubionej Planety: Ekstremalne Warunki już wkrótce. Przy czym pragnę zaznaczyć, że “wkrótce” może się rozciagnąć – słyszałem bowiem o drugiej wersji kampanii, w której wcielamy się nie w Wayne’a, ale w Lukę, jedną z nielicznych przedstawicielek płci pięknej w LP. Męska część czytelników sama pewnie zrozumie o co chodzi – patrzenie się na krągłości kogoś o takich kształtach, jest wręcz motywacją do przejścia gry jeszcze raz :] Tak na prawdę nie potrzebuję pretekstu w postaci nowego storyline’a, po prostu dajcie ją jako grywalną postać, a z miłą chęcią zagram raz jeszcze. No i może odblokuje się jakiś nowy, hardkorowy poziom trudności…

3. Demo Resistance: Retribution – granie na PSP.

Konsolka Sony nie przestanie mnie zaskakiwać. Po tym, co pokazało 333MHz mocy tego pudełka przy God Of War, zacząłem mówić o kieszonkonsolce Japończyków “AlmightyPortable”. Sęk w tym, że krążyła opinia iż Ready At Dawn przy procesie developingu zaprzedało dusze członków ekipy w zamian za mocarną grafikę i płynność animacji. Jeśli to prawda, to Bend Studio, odpowiedzialne za kieszonkową edycję Wyżynarki Chimer, musiało zrobić to samo. R:R stanowi wprost podręcznikowy przykład, jak wielką mocą dysponuje te małe cudeńko Sony w odpowiednich rękach. Jedynym mankamentem, który wychodzi przy okazji tej produkcji, jest brak drugiego analoga w PSP. Poradzono sobie z tym podobnie, jak w wypadku Syphon Filtera – analogiem mamy przypisany ruch postaci, pod klawiszami geometrycznymi zaś poruszanie kamery. Początkowo jest to dość problematyczne, ale na dłuższą metę (czytaj: po przyzwyczajeniu się do tego układu) jest to całkiem niezły pomysł. Od strony fabularnej zaś nie ma co się zbytnio rozpisywać – nie gramy Nathanem Halem, lecz nową postacią, niejakim Jamesem Graysonem. Koleś jest kozakiem większym niż “jakiś tam” Hale, który ma superpower ponieważ znacznie oparł się działaniu wirusa. Grayson zniszczył dotychczas ponad 20 centrów konwersji, a wszystko w związku z jego bratem, który musiał zostać zabity po tym, jak porwały go Chimery i zaczęły poddawać konwersji. James nieco się tym faktem podłamał i z nerwów zdezerterował z oddziałów specjalnych. Po odsiadce w więzieniu Grayman rączo ruszył do oddziałów partyzanckich, w których to jedzie po niemcach (I za to go lubię xD) oraz wysadza dużo rzeczy w powietrze. Najkrócej rzecz ujmując – taka kieszonkowa rozpierducha dla 1 gracza, połączona ze skromnym online dla 8, dobrą grafiką i fabułą, która może się okazać całkiem niezłą historią.
