First and foremost, I’d like to thank everyone who has had the chance happen upon my blog. Hopefully, I’ve provided a worthwhile read . I’m also sorry to say that this will most likely be my last post directly concerning “Goodies from the Grenadines” since I’m firmly situated back in Washington.

Yay! One more days until we stuff ourselves with goodies.

About my last post…where we made all sorts of pumpkin delights in Gourmet cooking? At first, everybody was saying, “Oh, yeah, this looks so good!” And afterwards we were all groaning because it was SO much pumpkin and SO much sugar. Almost no one finished their plate. But a lot of people got hyper. I started laughing and I couldn’t stop, and another girl at my table complained that she was dizzy. Eli, a boy in my group, said, “Try spinning around slowly” as a joke. But Sreevidya didn’t know he was joking and did it anyway. Funny! And Eli was the Dishwasher and I dried the dishes. He filled the empty cups with water and stuck utensils in them and gave them to me to dry, saying, “Here’s your martinis. Oh wait, did you order the cherry martini?” I nodded, playing along. He filled a cup with “pumpkin water” (because the dishes had been washed in the tub and turned orange) and put a fork or two in their and handed it to me. “Here you go!” And I just started to crack up, mostly because I was hyper, and partly because he wasn’t this hyper normally either. It doesn’t sound very funny here, but it was there, mostly because I was hyper.

Today I’m going to attempt to make Iced Pumpkin Cookies for a Thanksgiving celebration tomorrow. I’m going to my grandparents’ house with a bunch of other relatives and we’ll play and eat and have lots of fun.

HOT SPICED CIDER
2 qts Apple Cider
¼ cup sugar (more if desired)
1/8 teaspoon salt
8 whole cloves
8 whole allspice
8 sticks cinnamon (2 inches each)

Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes. Strain out spices before serving. Serve in mugs with cinnamon stick stirrer. Serves 8.

Leider, weil Mittwochnachmittag der optimale Zeitpunkt für outgesourcte Kindergeburtstagspartys ist! Was für ein Anfängerfehler, der sich aber gelohnt hat. Das Spektakel hat mir einen Vorgeschmack auf Bevorstehendes vermittelt und jede betriebswirtschaftliche Lektion an Praxisnähe übertroffen!

Alles andere geht in den Pommes und dem Zeitdruck unter. Zeit ist Geld und Blinde Kuh liegt halt nicht mehr drin. Leider muss ich das Lokal vor Partyende verlassen und verpasse den Höhepunkt: die Abgabe der kundenbindenden Goodies.

Egal. Ich habe nur noch meine eigene Wirtschaftlichkeitsrechnung im Kopf und kalkuliere, wie viele Bleche Kinderpizza ich mit demselben Mitteleinsatz backen könnte. Resultat: Die nächsten Geburtstagspartys der Buben sind finanziell gesichert. Dann folgt die nächste Mittelfristplanung.

Today, I presented my first “Red Carpet Writing: How to Hook Your Readers Hollywood Style” workshop at the Scottsdale Civic Library. I decided to focus on giving the attendees an energetic experience, involving them through questions and answers as much as possible, in order to create a lively and interactive workshop. With this in mind, I prepared by studying notes and the books in the series Save the Cat! by Blake Snyder, which inspired my workshop theme. I also brought my easel and some markers because I read somewhere that I cannot for the life of me recall now that an audience enjoys and retains more when the speaker draws. The drawings don’t necessarily even need to relate to the topic. Thankfully, mine did.

I count today’s workshop as a success and here are my criteria for measurement:

1. I involved the attendees and each seemed at ease. At least half offerred a question or an answer and every head in the room nodded at least once.

2. The attendees took notes.

3. Two attendees stayed after to further discuss the topic.

4. I found, when imaginary books are in the room, I do an excellent Vanna White style demonstration of them.

5. I got some laughs and did not run out of things to share.

6. I made two errors, both were corrected by an attendee. Though I was thoroughly embarrassed over having made the blunders, I believe I handled each without defensiveness. What were my errors? First, that a line of dialogue in a screenplay does not equate with a minute of film but that a page does. Yes, that makes far more sense. Also, I forgot to say this is a do, not a don’t, on one of the tips from the Snyder books.

7. As a workshop Goodie, I brought door tags with slogans on one side and my promo material on the other.

I feel so grateful to have been a part of the workshops today, to be a Desert Rose RWA member, and to be a writer. I have been so busy this month with loads of stationery designs and my own personal branding of Paper Cut Industries. I am almost done with the complete makeover of my current site. I have had the luck of finding an amazing website designer who is both talented and super fun. I couldn’t ask for more! G. Torres is the brainpower behind Indie Design Studio and Earthy Beginnings. Not only that, she is a mother. This woman can handle it all! Hopefully we will be done with the website soon and it will go live for all to see. For now, here is a teaser for what is to come.

Last month I donated some goodies for a Vintage Halloween Bash thrown by The Stylish Soiree. I placed my business card in every package and I ran out! So a new order was in place. My new business cards match my website completely. I have been working hard on my branding and now, a brand is born!

A gorgeous Victorian pattern is on the back. The front is a matte black with taupe browns and grays throughout. I am keeping with the accent aqua blue too.

INGREDIENTS

2 tablespoons concentrated orange juice
2 tablespoons maple syrup
4 slices of bread
1 egg, slightly beaten
½ lb mild bulk sausage
½ c chopped roasted pecans
2 tablespoons parsley flakes

DIRECTIONS

Break up bread in orange juice and maple syrup. Add egg and mix thoroughly. Blend in remaining ingredients. Make into small sausage balls about 1 inch in diameter or into patties. Fry slowly in a skillet or griddle over medium heat until browned. May be served as an hors d’oeuvre or accompaniment to macaroni for a family supper. Can be made ahead and frozen after cooking. Reheat in a warm oven before serving. Makes 4 to 6 patties, or 12 to 16 sausage balls.

So many orders have come in for my Goldfish wedding stationery. It all began as a greeting card and now so many couples have requested it for their wedding themes! This past week I got to print and ship several packages. The two color palettes we used were gold and lavender and navy blue with a golden orange. They looked amazing!
