Wahrheit vs. Fiktion “Was ist also Wahrheit? Ein bewegliches Heer von Metaphern, Metonymien, A

Wahrheit vs. Fiktion

“Was ist also Wahrheit?

Chapter 51 ~ “Luddism as Epistemology” by Langdon Winner (1977) Winner begins his piece with a brief

Chapter 51 ~ “Luddism as Epistemology” by Langdon Winner (1977)

Winner begins his piece with a brief discussion of various suggestions (from Goodman, Bookchin, Marcuse, and Ellul) on how we can eliminate the problems that technology has brought (“brought” being a weak work in that we actually brought the technology into existence) into our lives.

Winner’s proposal contains the following suggestions:

The search for new technological systems

The development of these forms participation of those concerned with their everyday employment and effects.

Integration of specific principles to guide further technological construction: Technology be intelligible to non-experts, Technology be flexible and mutable, Technology be judged according to the degree of dependency they tend to foster

The understanding of technology as a means that can only be used when there is an understanding of “what is appropriate.”

Winner immediately offers up faults that might be seen in the suggestions, such as utopianism and unreality. Two barriers he sees with this notion are those people who ignore problems by not focusing on the problems with the system but by adding new features to the existing system and the fact that no one truly knows how to actually create a new system because no knowledge is present to do this.

He uses the example of the counterculture of the 60s to show how we can change the outward appearance of a problem, but it doesn’t eliminate the problem.

For Winner, the question of “means” must be examined for true change to take place, and here, he brings up the idea of dismantling systems in order to understand. However, this is not the breaking off machines or the smashing of machines and some believe Luddites to do. This is more self-reflection and examination because “the most interesting parts of the technological order in this regard are not those found in the structure of physical apparatus anyway. I have tried to suggest that the technologies of concern are actually forms of life – patterns of human consciousness and behavior adapted to a rational productive design” (608-9).

Luddism, in Winner’s mind, calls for using self as research. Disconnecting one’s self from technology and noting the needs, habits, or discomforts that arise because of the disconnection is important to understand how much we need a particular form of technology in our life and if there are other, more effective, less obtrusive forms of technology that can be built to blend better with our lives.

The most significant alternative in Luddism is not this, however. It is simply not fixing technological systems as they break down. To Winner, society seems to see this “fixing” as “growth,” but if we actually refused to fix these systems, we could possibly develop new technologies that benefit us.

Winner concludes his essay by taking us back 2,500 years to Aeschylus’ “Prometheus Bound,” to illustrate that these problems are not new. We just find new ways to reinvent the problems, or to escalate them. And perhaps it’s time to truly think about what we can do to help ourselves. “Perhaps means can be found to rid the human world of our self-made afflictions” (610).

Here’s where the line starts to get really fuzzy. There is a problem finding information on the mother of Elizabeth Harriet Hammonds Wommack, but this is what I’ve got on the Hammonds family either way.

Thomas Hammonds + Mary Polly Parke

Thomas Hammonds

born: 1783 VA

died: 8 Aug 1865 Silex, Lincoln County, MO

parents: John Hammonds and Ann Robinson

Mary Polly Parke

born: 21 Jul 1789 VA

died 18 Aug 1867 unknown location

parents: unknown

Thomas + Mary Polly’s Children

Elizabeth Harriet Hammonds*

William Hammonds

born: 1810 KY

died: 1880 Millwood, Lincoln County, MO

married: Ann Unknown

Margaret S. Hammonds

born: 1828 MO

died: 1930 Silex, Lincoln County, MO

married: Benjamin Smith Mudd unknown date and location

Thomas Hammonds and Mary Polly Parke were married 6 Jun 1806 in Adair County, KY. Now considering how quickly people seemed to be pushing out kids at that time, I think its fair to assume that I’m missing quite a few on my list beetween 1810 and 1828. Obviously research continues on this topic.

Now to the Wommacks! Please note that there are different spellings of the last name Wommack/Womack/Wamack. This is where the Wommack line somewhat dead ends as we (Tina, myself, and Robert yet another Wommack family researcher) cannot figure out who Richard’s (not Captain Dick Richard, his dad) father is. We’ve tried comparing the county that Capt. Dick was born in to the county the Streetman family lived and we’re still baffled. The only way to figure it out is to get a DNA sample from a male Wommack in our family line. Any volunteers?

died: 27 Jan 1891 Pike County, TN

married: Louisa Zimmerman 25 Sep 1833 Lincoln County, MO

Richard married Catherine Streetman when he was about 21 in 1783 in Virginia. The entire family up to that point (which did not include Mary, Parmelia, or Hiram) moved from Virginia to Tennessee in 1806 settling outside of Nashville in Davidson County. After a few years they moved to Sumner County where Hiram was born, and later to Smith County, Tennessee where Richard Sr. died in 1811. Twelve years after his death, Catherine left for Lincoln County. Here’s an excerpt (which I’ve used in previous posts, but is definitely relevant) from The Troy Herald Vol II, Troy, Lincoln County, MO 3 May 1876 titled “Recollections of Captain Richard Wommack”:

“Capt. Richard Wommack was born in Halifax County, VA in 1804. When two years old his father [Richard Wommack Sr.] went to Tennessee and settled near Nashville. In a few years he moved to Sumner County and shortly afterward to Smith County, where he died. Brice Hammack, who had married the Captain’s sister and came to this county in 1820, and Jos. Sitton, whom came here in 1817, returned to TN in 1823 on a visit. They gave such flattering accounts of the new country that the Captain and his brother Hiram were eager to go at once. It was some time before his mother could be persuaded to leave her home in TN for then the wilderness. She finally consented and the party consisting of those named above an Brice Burroughs and Malcolm Smith, started on the 3rd of October 1823. They passed through Troy, MO on Sunday the 22nd of October 1823, and camped at Levi Brown’s spring.”

As Tina has done far more research than I have, I’ll refer to her for the determination of Richard’s father based on the circumstancial evidence that she’s compiled.

“I have placed Joel Womack as the father of my Richard. This seems to be the only conclusion to be drawn at this time, as Joel’s siblings ended up in Halifax and similar surnames of Joel’s sibling’s family’s/spouses also ended up in Lincoln County, MO (Watts, Cannon, Pack, Farley) Need to research further.”

And the following email comes from Robert, the other researcher that I’ve been in contact with:

“I have been going through microfilms of Virginia personal property tax records which ran from 1782 thru 1850 for every VA county for almost every year. For Halifax Co, FA, i looked from 1782-1812, but I found no trace of Richard Womack/Wommack. I did find the families of the “Cherry Grove” Womacks and the families of Abraham Womack III and his descendants.

“I found your Richard in Pittsylvania Co, VA, which is adjacent to Halifax, and where the Streetman family was. Richard Womack (various spellings) appears in Pittsylvania tax lists from the 1790s thru 1805 or 1806 (need to look at my notes to be sure of last year). Pittsylvania was divided into two districts, with some more of the “Cherry Grove” Womacks in one district and Richard Womack the only Womack in the other district–except for 1805 in which a Matthew Womack also appears.

“Starting in 1781, VA law stated these tax lists must be alphabetized, which did not mean perfectly alphabetized, but all the “A” surnames together, etc. Matthew Womack and Richard Womack were both under “W” in 1805 Pittsylvania, but far apart, so not sure if there is any connection. However, Richard was a few times near Mary Wadlow, and in one year right next to her. Mary Wadlow’s maiden name was Womack and she was the widow of William Wadlow. Richards proximity to Mary Wadlow may be a coincidence, but I doubt it…The reason I am sure that the Richard in Pittsylvania Co, VA is ours is because (1) the other Richards are accounted for, (2) the Streetmans were in Pittsylvania, (3) he disappears about the time he is said to have moved to TN, and (4) Pittsylvania is right next to Halifax where his son Richard was said to have been born.”

As is the norm on these posts, anyone with * next to their name has a more detailed description and info in another post, specifically Level 6: Great(x3) Grandparents Wommack + Dyer.

According to the study, titled “Health Insurance and Mortality in U.S. Adults,” working-age Americans without insurance have a 40 percent higher risk of death than their privately insured counterparts. It also includes a chart showing how many people have died state by state, supposedly because of lack of insurance. For example, researchers say 4,675 Texas have died because they didn’t have insurance during their study period.”That kind of stuff is classic junk science,” Mr. Milloy added.

John C. Goodman, president of the National Center for Policy Analysis, agreed that the study was flawed. “The subjects were interviewed only once and the study tries to link their insurance status at that time to mortality a decade later. Yet over the period, the authors have no idea whether subjects were insured or uninsured, what kind of medical care they received, or even cause of death,” he said in a statement.

NPCA noted that a “more careful study” completed by the Congressional Budget Office found that low-income people without insurance had a 3 percent higher chance of death, but found no difference among higher income earners.

When you are in the market for a high quality unit heater at a reasonable price it is important to compare features to make sure the unit heater that you pick is truly the one you need. Always make sure you calculate the BTU required for your space with the exact measurement and specification so that you do not buy a unit that is too small or one the is too large. A unit that is too large will cost more and one that is too small will cost less but work much harder and cost you a lot more in the long run. Reznor makes both a UDAS and UDAP where the biggest difference is the fact the the UDAS models have separated combustion. One more thing I would like to draw your attention to is the Goodman Central Air Split Systems. You have to make three choices when buying one of these systems. The first being the size of you outdoor condensing unit for your cooling function, next you pick the appropriate furnace for your heating function, and lastly the evaporator coil that must match the BTU output of your condensing unit and the size of your furnace for a seamless uniform look. Anyone of our Customer Care members will be able to help you match the appropriate units to make your shopping experience a pure joy.

the star attraction at Goodman

My friend, Jane, wanted to celebrate her birthday with a big, juicy steak. So she picked Goodman for a fun group dinner. And guess who was there the night I was there? Krista. It is definitely a small world. If you go to Krista’s post, you’ll see she’s linked to the half dozen other bloggers who’ve already been to Goodman and enjoyed it.

Me? I thought Goodman was a mixed bag and am unlikely to go back. In the interest of full disclosure, despite having been dragged to a lot of steakhouses, I’ve never been a huge fan of the genre, considering them the refuge of people who eat conservatively — you know, the ones who always get the chicken or steak dish when they eat out, but who still want a place where they can spend big money. (And don’t tell me you can get crabcakes or lobster, too – those have generally not turned out that tasty at steakhouses, either).

chicken liver and foie gras pate at Goodman

In any case, as many have noted, Goodman is Russian-owned. And you know, I could tell. The decor in the back room where we were seated isn’t so much American as much as it’s Old-School Library. Looking around, I saw shelves decorated with books and busts and such. And based on my trip to Moscow and St. Petersburg last year, I can tell you that the library look was popular there. The other giveaway would be the pickled herring starter – an anomaly on an otherwise steakhouse-standard list of starters.

Among the four different starters I tried, the chicken liver and foie gras pate was hands-down the best. And I’m not just saying that bc I have a weakness for foie gras. The humble chicken liver loaned its strong meaty flavor to the pate, making me wonder why Goodman had bothered with the foie gras at all (except to justify the £7.50 price tag).

salmon carpaccio at Goodman

The salmon carpaccio was my second-fave starter, though it’d been sliced so thin that the salmon became a mere vehicle for the tomato seeds, passionfruit and salt studded throughout. As for the other starters — the pea and chorizo risotto was mushy and gloppy from over-cooking and over-abundance of cheese, and the caesar salad needed more anchovies for oomph.

NY strip at Goodman

There were several (grass and corn-fed) steaks offered in different sizes and from different countries. Out of nostalgia for the mother country, I chose a New York strip and ordered it medium rare. Sadly, it arrived more medium than medium rare. I still ate the whole thing, though, because the accompanying bearnaise sauce was so good, masking the fact that my steak tasted tough. At £29, my New York strip was one of the cheaper steaks on the menu (with some of the ribeyes costing upwards of £40). And yet, the bottom line is that when you go to a steakhouse and think your steak could have been a lot better, that’s a bad thing.

At least the creamed spinach was lovely (it’s hard to go wrong with a bowl full of cream and butter) — the best of the side dishes. Goodman’s chips were fine, as were the mashed potatoes. But I think creamed spinach is always the way to go in a steakhouse.

cinnamon-apple tart a la mode

Desserts were of the homey cheesecake-chocolate cake variety. A cinnamon-apple tart, while a bit soggy in the crust, was the most appealing of the three or four we tried. Not a surprise given that hot apple, cinnamon and vanilla ice cream are a tough-to-beat flavor combo.

strawberry sundae

The sundae, on the other hand, was mostly whipped cream and bits of pound cake, whereas I’d hoped for tons of vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. Oh well. This isn’t America, after all.

With Goodman’s steaks costing £30-50, starters £8, sides £4 and desserts £6, it’s easy to see how the tab adds up fast. The service was friendly and responsive, but our meal with a modest amount of wine per person came to £85 each. At those prices, I long for the days of all-about-the meat places like Ray’s the Steaks in Washington, DC, and I’m unlikely to return to Goodman anytime soon. Unless I’m craving creamed spinach.

Goodman, 26 Maddox Street, W1S 1QH; 0207 499 3776; closest tube station: Oxford Circus

Had to call out the Yom Kippur opening night timing though! Come on, people. This is a play written and originated on Broadway by icons of Jewish culture, and the Goodman saw fit to hold opening night as the sun sets on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Duh? The Goodman even has a Jewish-themed play coming up in its season called High Holidays (Yom Kippur is one of them). Oy, makes me chuckle. But when all is said and done, and kvetched, it looks to be a really great show, and . . . I’ll give . . . that’s what matters. Here’s my preview in Cheeky.
