Well well well, Google finally suited up and decided to play the OS game. The news follows Google’s removal of the “beta tags” on its apps just yesterday. Initially aimed at low powered machines(read: netbooks), Chrome OS drops mid 2010, then moving to desktops. This asks a lot of questions. With apps such as Google Docs running in the browser, it’ll be interesting to see how this is implemented. Will a majority of the work be done in the cloud(online for you less tech savvy)? What about Google’s other OS, Android? Companies seem to love to put Android on netbooks.

Update: The list of partners that are set to support this operating system include Adobe, Acer, Qualcomm, HP, Asus, Freescale, Lenovo, and Texas Instruments. Where’s Dell and Toshiba?

Google Wave is a product that helps users communicate and collaborate on the web. A “wave” is equal parts conversation and document, where users can almost instantly communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more. Google Wave is also a platform with a rich set of open APIs that allow developers to embed waves in other web services and to build extensions that work inside waves.

The service seems to combine Gmail and Google Docs into an interesting free-form workspace that could be used to write documents collaboratively, plan events, play games or discuss a recent news.

Google Wave has a lot of innovative features, but here are just a few:

- Real-time: In most instances, you can see what someone else is typing, character-by-character.

*Embeddability: Waves can be embedded on any blog or website.

*Applications and Extensions: Just like a Facebook application or an iGoogle gadget, developers can build their own apps within waves. They can be anything from bots to complex real-time games.

* Wiki functionality: Anything written within a Google Wave can be edited by anyone else, because all conversations within the platform are shared. Thus, you can correct information, append information, or add your own commentary within a developing conversation.

*Open source: The Google Wave code will be open source, to foster innovation and adoption amongst developers.

*Playback: You can playback any part of the wave to see what was said.

*Natural language: Google Wave can autocorrect your spelling, even going as far as knowing the difference between similar words, like “been” and “bean.” It can also auto-translate on-the-fly.

* Drag-and-drop file sharing: No attachments; just drag your file and drop it inside Google Wave and everyone will have access.

I’m playing with Google App Engine. So far Google’s documentation is very helpful so getting started was fairly strait forward.

Here are my ramp-up tasks:

Read through the Getting Started section

Ramped up on Python – very cool and easy to use scripting language

I learned to JSON using simplejson- it works nicely with python

I’m now adopting new Web Framework django for Python

And I’m getting up to speed with a new data storage concept

All are great technologies.

I’m also testing the PyDev plugin for using eclipse IDE to develop for Google App engine – here are the instructions – so far so good.

Google desktop has been customising users desktops for years, with the latest widgets enabling XP us

Google desktop has been customising users desktops for years, with the latest widgets enabling XP users to create Vista-esque sidebars, with clocks, docks and apps. However, after countless requests, Google has finally announced the release of a Gmail desktop widget.

The new gadget will offer more to users than just the ability to check your new mail, it also allows you to read, search and compose messages without having to open a browser window. Google has also added starring, keyboard shortcuts and auto-contact features to recreate the Inbox on your desktop.

James Yum, Developer Programs Engineer for Google Desktop, explains the benefits and how he uses the app:

It doesn’t take up much space in your sidebar or desktop, and you can also resize it to show as few or as many messages as you’d like. When I’m at work, I keep two instances of the gadget open: one logged into my personal Gmail account and the other set to my Google Apps account for work related stuff. Instead of getting lost in a sea of tabs or browser windows, I can bring up the gadgets in an instant (hint: pressing the shift key twice brings up all your hidden Desktop gadgets).

The gadget works with the latest version of Google Desktop and can be found and installed from the Gmail Desktop Gadget page.

This could be a great little tool for those who would rather not keep a browser tab open specifically for their Inbox and like having an app open. However, from the looks of the comments on the download page, the next request could be improved with a sound notification option for new mail – although some busy email users might be happy for that.

Since it is Windows only and I haven’t ventured into the world of Google Desktop just yet I can’t offer a full review of the app, however, maybe the nice readers of Just Google It will below in our comments…

The Cougar Committee is again in session!… But first…

The Kardasians are being seen all over the damn TV and Internet!.. I have yet to see something that would translate as talent, but if being seen won you an award, these gals would clean up at every ceremony. Kim Kardasian (of Ray J. Sex tape fame ) is reportedly engaged to Reggie Bush. Reggie is a genius, because even with his NFL salary and endorsements, he could walk away from a divorce with half HER stuff… She’s that ballin… I’d wrap any one of these sisters up like pita bread, Fast!.. I’d even let our kids carry the Kardasian name… If we have a daughter, I’d name her Veesa… A boy, I’d name Master… Yep. Veesa and Master Kardasian… I wouldn’t stop at two either… Amex and Discover aren’t gender-specific names.. But truth be told, the Kardasians ain’t got shit on these Cougar Pups!

I’ve jocked Sanaa Lathan (left) since Blade but slept on her since she started dating Omar Epps. They been in love on screen in so many flicks, shit just made since to stop acting and play one on one, “for your heart.” ( Love and Basketball reference).

Gabrielle Union (right) has always been hot!.. I actually witnessed her hotness at the 2002 Essence Awards. She was n VIP with her then-fiancé, now ex-husband, Whatshisface oh yea Chris Howard ( thanks Google App!). He was a football player too ( that shit dont last.. hint hint )

Meagan Good ( middle ) is fine too!… But she is but is not quite at cougar status. She’s still in her dubs…. But
Aysha Tyler will do just perfect in her absence.

Ms. Tyler ( I hope it’s Ms. ) was the host of my favorite cancelled dating-reality TV show “the Fifth Wheel” and was the only black friend on “Friends”.

So how does my committee keep up with the Kardasians?.. If I had to choose, I’d prioritize in this order:

Sanaa Lathan
Gabrielle Union
Kim Kardasian
Aysha Tyler
Kourtney Kardasian
Whatsherface oh yea Khloe Kardasian ( thanx again Google App!! )

Niemals!

Shit…jetzt hab ichs doch getan!

From Stuff.co.nz Pushing ahead in the decades-long effort to make computers that understand human sp

From Stuff.co.nz

Pushing ahead in the decades-long effort to make computers that understand human speech, Google researchers have added sophisticated voice-recognition technology to the company’s search software for the Apple iPhone.
Users of the free application can place the phone to their ear and ask virtually any question, such as: “Where’s the nearest Starbucks?” or “How tall is Mount Everest?” The sound is converted to a digital file and sent to Google’s servers, which try to determine the words spoken and pass them along to the Google search engine.
The search results, which may be displayed in seconds on a fast wireless network, will at times include local information, taking advantage of iPhone features that let it determine its location.
The ability to recognise just about any phrase from any person has long been the supreme goal of artificial-intelligence researchers looking for ways to make man-machine interactions more natural. Systems that can do this have recently started making their way into commercial products.

  (Full story)

And of course what would a good Apple story be without the Apple2.0 take on it.

For tech bloggers, this was bigger than Obama.

How else to explain the reaction Friday to John Markoff’s story in the New York Times about Google (GOOG) bringing voice activation to the iPhone, letting you search for everything from pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge to the length of a giant squid just by talking into your phone?

Markoff’s story was the No. 1 item all day on the Techmeme news aggregator, and by the time it was over more than three dozen tech writers had weighed in, from AppleInsider’s Katie Marsal to Eric Zeman’s Phone Scoop. Seth Weintraub posted a video. Several reporters spoke of it in the past tense, as if they had already had the program in hand.

So where is Google Voice Search?

(full story here)

and yet another video, let’s hope they are right. When I lived in Vancouver talking with a Kiwi accent (yes it is the Queen’s English!) to any automated voice recognition telephone service required me putting on my worst rural Tennessee meets Jewish New York accent to get any results.

Seventh in the series of BarCamp – BarCamp7 was hosted by Amazon Dev Center, Hyderabad on 30th Aug 2

Seventh in the series of BarCamp – BarCamp7 was hosted by Amazon Dev Center, Hyderabad on 30th Aug 2008. The theme of BarCamp this time was Computation on Cloud 9 (SaaS, PaaS, Virtualization and more…). There were more than 180 registrations and around 100 participants with 10 sessions including presentations, demos and talks. It was informative in a few sessions but some of the presentations were not so interesting and hence I saw 40% of the crowd moving out by mid event. Anyways, let’s look into the sessions individually –

1)	Introduction Session and Cloud Computing by Ramesh Loganathan – Since the event start a bit late hence all sessions were cut down to 20mins. This session was quick and looked into what Saas\PaaS\Virtualization is and what is Cloud. I found this as a good start to BarCamp.

2)	Grid Computing and Hadoop by Jyoti from Yahoo Research – This session too went well, a bit longer but informative (at least for a few like me ). This was about Grid computing and what a Map Reduce is, which can be found with Hadoop (http://hadoop.apache.org ).

3)	Demo on Google app engine SDK – This was a quick Demo session from Googlers about writing small app using Google App Engine SDK for development and Google Infrastructure for deployment. Google App Engine come under PaaS (Platform as a Service).

4)	Progress – Salesforce introduction – This session was taken by Salesforce to take the audience to a deeper level into the DB changes which they can make.

5)	Amloc from 3i Infotech – This was all theoretical session on why 3i infotech chose multi tenancy for their banking solution for their client banks.

6)	Demo on EC2 and EBS by a Hyderad based startup – This was all practical and demo based session showing how you actually use an image on EC2 and was one of the best sessions. This was though hit by low internet speed which again was unexpected at Amazon.

This was the last session I attended and then came out. I found Grid computing as most interesting more because it looked into making Grids and looking into search space. Cloud computing is spreading very rapidly because of its core strength – cloud. It can reduce the actual infrastructure cost to minimal in a few scenarios, one of the examples could be testing space where you need large chunk of test machines\server but for less amount of time and once the work is complete the machines are dump and then are required again when some other test pass comes. Here cloud based solutions could be helpful.
