Google has plans to produce its own cars. The cars will be provided with high-tech elements and internet to use in function of the travelling. The world of truckers are already looking forward how this will evolve.

Google works on a platform for cars to follow automatically the route and the best route for that route. According to Perry Waters the software would be ready somewhere in 2011.

The name of the “green” car will be chosen by the public with votes on the website that is coming later on this year. Together with GM, Google will construate 2000 cars for a start and will see from there where it will go. If the car gets the interest of the people, more will be made.

Ever Googled yourself? I have, and nothing came up. I was disappointed.

Now I know this is old news for a lot of people, but I think the expression ‘getting Googled’ has developed new meaning in recent months, and it’s far from desirable. Google street view was mildly interesting when it first came to notoreity, but I didn’t realise how frightening it was until it came to Brighton. Google themselves played down the fears of street view by ‘funning it up’. The first time I saw a Google car, I was intrigued and looked round at it – when I got home, I went on Google street view. People had told me it was like walking down the road, but I hadn’t realised they meant it! Brighton wasn’t on there. But when I looked at my old house in Leeds, I realised that the Google car had driven past my house whilst I was living there.

Google camera on camera? Will the world implode?!

I know that Google blur people’s faces and their number plates, but I could see my housemate’s old car, I could see my plants in the front window, and when I went down the back road I realised that if I zoomed right in, I could see someone filling up a pint glass from the sink in the kitchen – me! It was nothing too awful – nobody would know to look if they didn’t know the layout of the house, and you wouldn’t know it was me unless you knew that I was the only person in the house who drank water from pint glasses, but the potential was scary.

I soon discovered that the google street view was in fact redundant military technology, and that it was so obsolete that the military now use the same technology in real time! I tell you what – that is scary. On top of that, Google may blur people’s faces, but if you know where somebody lives and what their habits are, you could easily recognise them on street view. This is only exacerbated by the fact that when people see a perfectly average looking car with a 5 foot camera on the roof, they cannot help but turn to look at it, unwittingly plastering their faces across street view. The fact that sneaky Google cars only identify themselves by way of a tiny sticker on the back would be more concerning if the cars weren’t so bleedin’ obvious due to the size of their cameras!

All the same, this technology has been heralded as the next big step in web development and social media. There’s no avoiding it, so put up, shut up, and if you see a car with a big bloody camera on the roof, duck or wave.

So I’ll go into the whole Google street feature some other time.

For those that don’t know Google takes pictures of every street and puts it up online. I’m not talking Google earth where we see a birds eye view. I’m talking about street level view.

I love this feature because I geek out and find as many movie locations as possible. (see this for an example)

Since I live in Canada there is not one image of a street view in Google. Something to do with privacy. I believe if Google blurs every face/license plate that it will be allowed to upload the Canadian street view… Well, today as I was driving and I drove by the Google Camera Car.

I didn’t take the picture. This is just an example of what the Google Car looks like. You can recognize it by the crazy camera strapped to the top.

I smiled as it went by. I don’t know if it was taking pictures. It was driving pretty fast (60km) to get a good shot in my opinion, but then again maybe the camera can handle it.  If my blurred out face with my blurred out licence plate shows up, I’ll be sure to post it.

Pensiamo che in Gran Bretagna è guerra aperta a questo “intruso”. Quindi non è bastato che Google Street View sia dovuta venire a patti con le normative Ue sulla privacy: in Europa le immaginni vengono offuscate targhe e oscurati volti.

Sicuramente è interessante stare seduti alla propria scrivania ed osservare cosa accade in un’altra città in formato 3D, attraverso un pc. In tutti i paesi in cui è uscito, Google Street View ha sollevato malumori di moralisti e benpensanti.

La privacy è messa a repentaglio.

E lo sarà ancor più quando  incontreremo lungo la strada un triciclo guidato da un signore in maglia rossa con tanto di scritta Google.
Google ha presentato il suo mezzo di trasporto per fotografare strade e vicoli impervi, per catturare angoli caratteristici e nascosti delle città: un triciclo hi-tech. Una normale bicicletta nella parte anteriore, un complesso sistema di ripresa ed archiviazione immagini nella parte posteriore: questo particolare triciclo permetterà a Google di portare gli obiettivi anche dove la leggendaria Google Car non può arrivare.

 Nei prossimi giorni proprio nei carrugi di Genova farà il suo esordio, e anche noi potremo andara a curiosare  negli angoli più particolari della nostra città, sperando però di non fare incontri inaspettati.

Recycling as a Lifestyle and a Business

TAMPA, Fla. – Have you ever seen the building on the corner of Fletcher and I-75 with a bunch of buoys strung everywhere? This small business that many think is an old bait n’ tackle shop is actually Hong Kong Willie.

Derek Brown, 26, and his family own and operate Hong Kong Willie. The little shop specializes in preservation art. The artists don’t take preservation too lightly either.

“99 percent of everything that has gone into a piece of art has been recycled and reused,” Brown said.

Just as unique as the art is, so is the company’s name. Brown says the name was created by his father, Joe Brown, in the 1950s.

“My father being in an art class, being affected by a teacher, they were melting Gerber baby food bottles,” Brown said. “The teacher interjected that Hong Kong had a great reuse and recycling program even then.”

Brown’s father then took that concept and later added the Americanized name Willie to the end. And that’s how Hong Kong Willie was born as a location that offers recycling in a different and creative way.

Hong Kong Willie artists are what are known as freegans. Freegans are less concerned with materialistic things and more concerned about reducing consumption to lessen the footprint humans leave on this planet.

“I’m sure everyone has their own perception of a freegan, possibly jumping into a dumpster or picking up something on the side of the road,” Brown said. “There [are] people who will have excess. There [are] also things that can be trash to one man, but art or a prize to another man.”

Brown and his family carry this practice through to their art. It’s his family’s way of life, turning trash, which would otherwise fill up landfills, into an art form.

The Brown family gets a lot of their inspiration for their art from the Florida Keys. In fact, this is where the deluge of buoys wrapping around the ‘Buoys Tree’ came from, the fishermen of Key West.

“It is Styrofoam, we understand that it does not degrade, but to blame the fishermen for their livelihood wouldn’t be correct, instead we find a usage for those,” Brown said.

Brown said there’s a usage for everything, even the hooks to hold the painted driftwood, which are also salvaged, to the wall are old bent forks. Everything’s reused here. Purses made out of old coffee bean sacks to “kitschy,” as Brown described it, jewelry made from old baseballs.

“Hong Kong Willie truly believes that a piece, whether it’s a bag or a painted artwork, it’s meant for one person.”

Dear Google;

I know you think fracas is mad at you because when your car drove down my street I happened to be standing right in front of the window looking perhaps not my best. It’s not that I was standing there in my sweatpants and t-shirt with no bra on, tousled hair and no makeup on, speaking on the telephone. It’s not that I’m worried about whether or not the claims you make (about how you’ll blur certain images for the sake of privacy) are true or not. It’s not even that I’m worried that you’ve disregarded my country’s privacy laws taking those photos to upload to your Google Streets offerings to, oh, say… the entire fraccing world.

No. Google people… I’m upset at you for something even more heinous, something so awful, irresponsible and downright stupid, that it’s hard for me to even comprehend why you did it.

You see Google people… I live in Saskatchewan, and your car drove down my very own street last week.

Yes, that’s right. Last week. The beginning of May. In Saskatchewan.

Do you realize what color Saskatchewan is at the beginning of May?

Yes… brown. Even the grass… which is supposed to be green. 

Okay, well, and it’s also grey… and every other color that dirt, dust, filth and all the other particulates that make up the sludge left behind after a winter of applying dirt and salt to roads for people who live where it’s -52 fraccing degrees Celsius happen to live.

Seriously Google people, we need that stuff thrown from trucks all over our (usually) lovely city, because without it we will slip, slide, crash into each other, thus ruining both our vehicles and our bodies just for trying to get from here to there when our streets are covered in snow and ice.

Don’t you see why I’d be upset now?

Despite the fact Mr. Fracas and I have spend countless hours fixing up our property and now enjoy a park-like yard with perennial beds, shrubs and fruit trees, patio and lovely iron bench seating areas, several firepit areas with seating; despite the fact we spent hours on ladders painting the exterior, no, you, in your sheer brilliance, came by with your spiffy camera-laden car when?

Oh that’s right… you came before we could clean up the sludge, dirt, goo and muck that renders our usually lovely city something reminiscent of the streetscape in some apocalyptic movie like Bladerunner. You came by before mother nature could bring forth some rain and sun to bring out the perky goodness that is our yard and property at its best.

I guess that’s because Google Streets is really great for folks to see the real value of the real estate they’re checking on…. right? I mean… it has nothing to do with just providing the means for weirdos and idiots to stalk, harass or invade the privacy of other folks, now… does it?

Of course not.

Because taking that photo of my home and yard barely days after the last snow has melted here in Saskatchewan is really good for showing others the true value of my property when I haven’t had a chance to clean up the dirt, debris and litter left behind after a long and very cold winter.

You can’t imagine how grateful I am to you for that Google people.

Perhaps someday, the Google person who decided to schedule the car to drive the streets of Saskatchewan exactly at this time of year should be given an award or something? I could even hand craft the trophy for you… right out of the muck outside my house that you photographed.

I think that would be fitting… don’t you?

Hong Kong Willie. The name of the artist. In 1958 his mother took Hong Kong Willie to an art class. The name started then. An art teacher when doing crafts out of Gerber baby bottles, made a statement, in Hong Kong reuse was common. At that time he thought this was very interesting. His father had low-land, at that time landfills were common also. The county had told Hong Kong Willie’s father, it was safe, but as we now know this was not so. Something can come from bad to be good. Hong Kong Willie the name came from that art teacher impressing on that young mind that objects made for one use could be for many other uses. Hong Kong for the neat concept. Willie for an American name. So for many years Hong Kong Willie had a life of reuse. Hong Kong Willie saw forms in a different light, His life now was meaningful, knowing this was and would be his life. Art made from found objects, making less of a footprint on this world. Art and art teachers, HOW IMPORTANT. For the ones that have, and the ones who have not. Media can be found. Now 50 years later, we know now being green is important. We need to look at this very carefully. Our children and our world need a different understanding. Objects can be used in many different ways. Hong Kong Willie the tons of objects in his life that have been used, without much change, So for that art teacher what she did for my life. Thank You. Eh oui, grande nouvelle,

nous devrions bientôt quelques grandes villes du Canada sur Google Street View, dont Saskatoon.

Vu la taille des villes canadiennes, je me demande si notre petit quartier verra passer la Google Car.

Vous aurez alors l’occasion de vous balader dans l’une des villes les plus dangereuses du monde et de voir à quoi cela ressemble.

Cadavres sur les trottoirs, photos Live de personnes se faisant braquer et Car-Jacking. Ca risque d’être assez incroyable.

Enfin je plaisante, je n’ai encore rien vu de tels dans la ville.

Mais une petite polémique fait déjà que la Google Car pourrait avoir du mal à passer au Canada. En effet la loi n’admet pas qu’on puisse prendre des clichés des quartiers et de leurs habitants. Le principe de supprimer les images compromettantes semblent ne pas suffire. Je vous laisse étudier ça en détails. Nous verrons dans quelques mois si Google aura été le plus fort et j’en profiterai pour vous montrer mon quartier.

Pues es la impresion que me dio ayer por la tarde cuando al ir a mi casa y pasar por un hotel que esta en el centro de Monterrey me encontre con uno de los Google Cars que se encargan de realizar las tomas para el servicio de googlestreet view.

Se cercate su Google Maps la cittadina di Broughton troverete un piccolo intrigo di viottoli di campagna nel sud-est britannico. Magari, affidandovi alla visione satellitare, potreste incappare in un campo da tennis o una piccola piscina.

Se però provate a trascinare l’omino arancione con la sub-aureola verde sul dettaglio di una strada…sorpresa! «No street view». Tutto questo per colpa, o merito, degli abitanti, che sono scesi in piazza per ostacolare l’avanzata dell’occhio della grande G.

Quando il signor Jacobs ha scorto dalle finestre del suo cottage una macchina blu, con uno strano apparecchio sul tetto, avvicinarsi lentamente al suo isolato, ha subito collegato l’ospite inatteso alla Street View Car di Googl .

Mr Jacobs aveva ragione: si trattava proprio della telecamera a 360 gradi che consente a Google Maps di offrire uno dei servizi attualmente più in voga. Un arrivo mai così sgradito, tanto che in brevissimo tempo tutto il vicinato è sceso in strada a bloccare l’avanzata dell’auto, nell’incredulità del conducente.

La curiosa protesta degli abitanti di Broughton ha alla base un forte timore di violazione della proprietà privata. La cittadina è una meta prediletta dei ladri di abitazione. I tre furti registrati nell’ultimo mese e mezzo hanno fatto alzare notevolmente il livello di guardia. I residenti, perciò, hanno non poco timore che l’apparizione delle loro case, nei più piccoli dettagli, alla mercé di qualsiasi internauta, potrebbe favorire ulteriormente la curiosità dei delinquenti.

Tante, dunque, le differenze con gli Stati Uniti. Mentre oltreoceano si fa a gara per chi scova l’immagine più buffa catturata dalle telecamere di Street View, il più sobrio stile british si preoccupa di come sfuggire a questo sguardo indiscreto.

Molti di voi conoscono la Google Car, quella insomma usata per Street View. Alcuni forse avranno sentito parlare di Google Ventures, che ha come obiettivo quello di promuovere l’innovazione incoraggiando nuove società tecnologiche promettenti. Io non ho ancora capito se sia un pesce d’aprile o no. Ma nel dubbio ho subito inviato il mio progetto, fatto di fretta e furia, prima che qualcuno – o Google stessa – mi rubi l’idea. Si tratta nientepopodimeno che di una Google Car per Linux.

L’avreste magari vista in giro a Milano, a Roma, oppure a Genova o in qualche altra grande città italiana. Ma una realtà che la macchina di Google non è mai riuscita a cogliere e che è sempre sfuggita all’occhio delle sue fotocamere sono gli utenti Linux: tranne le rare apparizioni alla luce del sole, essi trascorrono infatti la maggior parte della loro vita infrattati nelle loro cantine. Ecco allora la soluzione: una Google Car-ina (R), delle dimensioni di un topo, progettata fin dall’inizio per potersi infilare anche negli anfratti più reconditi e nascosti, dove di solito appunto si annidano gli utenti Linux. Disponibile anche con corazzatura rinforzata e sistema difensivo, nel caso di cantine infestate da roditori o linari particolarmente aggressivi.

Ma non è tutto! Parallelamente è in avanzata fase di progettazione un’idea ancora più interessante. Che pubblicherò in anteprima su questo blog.

I’ve always been of the opinion that events are more exciting if ythey are unexpected. Not only are exciting events made even more exciting, it also gives mundane moments a reason to remain memorable. For example, take my routine trip to the doctor’s surgery yesterday morning: while trying to find a parking space, I happened to take a turning into a little dead-end road that usually has a parking spot or two. As I drove in I spotted a rather odd looking car. It was a Vauxhall & black in colour, but w/ a mast attached to the roof and a contraption attached at the top like some sort of 21st sci-fi crow’s nest.

Now, I had a suspicion that it may have been the Google car. I felt quite silly @ the time, and feel even worse for admitting it now, for suddenly becoming very excited at the thought I’d actually seen it! Sure enough, when I checked google images, what I saw is exactly what the actual thing looks like.

What really surprised me though, is that it was there at all. It’s what made me question myself in the first place. I live in a small suburb of a large town less than fifty miles outside London and it was near my home – not even in the town centre – that I saw the car. Are Google attempting to Street View the entire country? I can’t understand why this sort of area would rank anywhere on a priority list. [Have since found this -  http://bit.ly/903X1 - which shows all the sightings (w/ photos) of the car... & it looks like it really is going almost everywhere!]

Exceptionally annoyed that I didn’t get a photo of my own. From now on I’ll carry it everywhere w/ me.

Last summer Google announced that they will invest $5.5 million into developing new electric cars. Working with Aptera Motors Google is developing a two-seat car, which is equipped with a hybrid or electric motor. A car will be able to accelerate to 140 km/h in approximately 10 seconds and a max distance 160 km, with less than 1 liter of fuel per 100 km.

The guardian reports that googles hush hush street level mapping car crashed into a deer as it made its stealthy way along a road in upstate New York. I guess this is a demonstration that objectivity is impossible – that the observer and the observed necessarily interact with one another. Apparently the deer limped off after the police were alerted – perhaps it was trying to keep a low profile.
