Linux uzmanı Glyn Moody, Google’ın, Chrome OS’in piyasaya çıkmasıyla beraber ücretsiz olarak netbook dağıtmaya başlayabileceğini iddia etti.

Rebel Code: Linux and the Open Source Revolution (Asi Kod: Linux ve Açık Kaynak Devrimi) adlı kitabın yazarı olan Linux uzmanı Glyn Moody, Google’ın yakın bir gelecekte bedavaya bilgisayar dağıtmaya başlayacağını düşündüğünü söyledi.

Glyn Moody kitabında Linux’un gelişimini anlatıyor

Google’ın, reklamlarını daha fazla insana ulaştırmak amacıyla Chrome OS tabanlı netbook’ları ücretsiz dağıtabileceğini belirten Moody, açık kaynak kodu sayesinde yazılımın birim maliyetinin sıfır olacağını ve Chrome OS’in yapısı sayesinde donanım maliyetinin de çok düşük olacağını söyledi.

I’ll be the first to admit, I was mighty skeptical about downloading a new web browser. (I was a die-hard Mozilla user.) But one click of Google Chrome and now I’m hooked.

It has all the functions of your standard browser.. tabbed windows, easy to access bookmarking and a fun download prompt at the bottom of the screen. But there are plenty of new additions that are geared towards the “heavy web user,” according to Chrome’s blog.

As for what’s to come, announced Thursday:

“Today we released Chromium OS, the open source project behind Google Chrome OS. Google Chrome OS is an operating system that is intended for people who spend most of their time on the web. It aims to provide a computing experience that is fast, simple and secure. The Chromium OS project as you’ll see it today is comprised of the code that has been developed thus far, our early experiments with the user interface, and detailed design docs for many parts that are under active development.”

So, basically there’s more crazy, customizable options to come. Aka: I can’t wait.

Next venture, finding time to conquer Google Wave.. my invite email is mocking me from my inbox.

I haven’t used Opera in a long time. Last time I launched Opera from my desktop was probably around this time last year. It appears that Opera has released a new version. Opera 10. When I first heard of the release I didn’t really expect to see much, I dismissed it foolishly thinking that there would be not much to it other than a few new aesthetics and things like that. During the time of the release I was jam packed with uni work so I really did not get to check it out. So thanks to Stan Schroeder’s post on Mashable I realised I was so .. soooo wrong.

Google Chrome warned me about the Opera installation file being hazardous to my pc when I began downloading the installation file from the Opera website. I decided to ignore that message just this one time and went ahead with the installation.

Launching Opera 10 for the first time, I realised that its much more than it used to be. I remember Opera being a really fast, lightweight browser. But it turns out that Opera 10, whilst still retaining those characteristics, is loaded with loads of new features. Clicky Clicky for the full list of new features.

The new Unite features give you the ability to share your documents, stream music & movies, host websites and chat on your computer straight from the browser. Opera automatically searches for other computers with Opera installed and lets you share these files among them. This is really handy if you want to quickly set up “Homegroup”-like sharing in your network, and yes it works regardless of the OS the computer is running. Unite also lets you dedicate a folder to which other people can upload content to. Of course you have the option to put a password protect the application so that only people you authorize can use this feature.

So far I haven’t had any problems with it. Unlike Chrome, Opera doesn’t seem to slow down my crappy lappy even though i have a gazilion tabs open. Speaking of tabs, hovering over the tab will give you a thumbnail of the tab, much like aero in Windows 7. Also when your copy of Opera is up and running, from the bottom of the toolbar click and drag the tabs toolbar downward from the to see what happens. Thumbs up Opera!

With the open sourcing of Google Chrome OS as Chromium OS project, people have started building the

With the open sourcing of Google Chrome OS as Chromium OS project, people have started building the OS on their own and a couple of them can be found here and here. I have tried out the build that is available as a torrent mentioned in the TechCrunch article, but could not login to the OS (Network not connected and offline login failed) in neither VMWare nor VirtualBox on a Leopard. However, it logged in fine in VirtualBox on Ubuntu 9.10. The performance though was terribly bad. There is also a USB bootable image available here, which I have not tried out yet.

I have downloaded the Chromium source code and have built the OS image and ran it successfully on both VMWare and VirtualBox. The code is downloaded as a tarball for this build process. If you wish to make changes to the code and contribute, the source should be downloaded using git, in which case, the Chromium depot tools need to be installed as a prerequisite.

What is Chrome OS?

Chrome OS is a lightweight OS designed to be used by netbooks, focused only on the web. It is built on top of the Linux kernel and aims to be faster, simpler and secure.

Built on top of Linux kernel

Faster boot times

Entirely web-based

Minimal user interface

Encrypted storage of all user data in the cloud

Self verification of integrity of OS at every boot

What it is not?

Chrome OS is NOT a replacement for desktop operating systems. You can’t just go and replace your current OS with Chrome OS!

Build Process:

I have done the entire build on my 32 bit Ubuntu 9.10. The image works fine in VirtualBox in the same machine and also on VMWare in a Leopard. The steps in brief are:

Making the local repository

Creating the build environment

Including Chrome browser

Building the platform packages

Building the kernel

Building the final OS image

Converting the image to a VMWare image

Converting the image into a bootable USB disk (optional)

Creating the local repository took about an hour to complete. Other steps are relatively faster; the building of the platform packages and the kernel took 10 minutes each and the final OS image itself took 5 minutes. Conversion into a VMWare image requires qemu. Do a sudo apt-get install qemu-kvm before starting the conversion.

How does it work?

The OS is nothing but a browser, well almost! The OS boots and you have a nice blue screen (no, not the BSOD ) asking for the username and password. A Gmail account is required to login to the OS. The build number below the login screen is unique for each build of the Chromium OS image.

On login, the user is directly taken to the Chrome browser and everything the OS has to offer is available right there. It’s all about the web!

Clicking on the Chrome logo on the top left corner gives you a list of web apps (even Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail). Orkut is missing, but Facebook isn’t Almost all the websites that I use regularly worked fine. Flash too works great without any noticeable problems.

On the downside, command line access sucks (Do Ctrl + Alt + T to access the terminal). Typing ‘exit’ at the command line does not take you back to the browser right away. It never did for me, at least! I always ended up typing ‘exit’ about 4-5 times and suddenly the browser will appear. Also the OS becomes unresponsive in both VMWare and VirtualBox if left unused for a few minutes.

The minimalistic UI seems to be a cautious approach. There are two themes available right now – GTK+ and Classic. The look feel at the moment is not at all good. But we can expect Google (and the Open Source community!) to improve on this in the coming months.

The OS is targeted at those who use computers almost solely for accessing the Internet. It is simple and nicely done. But the performance of the Chrome OS is not satisfactory on a virtual machine. The user interface also needs to improve quite a bit.

Keeping all the data in the cloud could be a double-edged sword with potential paranoid users trying to avoid Chrome OS just for that reason. Google is betting on the fact that the market for net-books will increase in the future and that users who want to connect to the Internet fast would prefer an OS which lets them do that without much difficulties.

Like my sensationalist headline? Grabs your attention does it? Well this is what happens when media

Like my sensationalist headline? Grabs your attention does it? Well this is what happens when media makes a big deal about a story that is almost much ado about nothing.

I say almost for a reason…

According to CNET, the computer processor usage by Firefox is causing overheating problems in laptops and netbooks. Fair enough, but there is more to this story than the fact that Firefox is turning into a CPU/memory hog and that it will burn up your computer like Drew Barrymore in Firestarter. Apparently, this is such a story that Finnish network MTV3 has devoted some of it’s web space about it (in Finnish… the headline reads “Firefox could overheat your processor”).

The issue of space

For those that have never been inside a laptop or even a netbook, it’s cramped in there. There’s not a lot of real estate to work with as there is in desktop computers. Laptop/netbook manufacturers can only shrink parts so much and even then they are practically sitting side-by-side with another part. This brings on another problem, which is airflow. Because there is almost no empty space in a laptop or a netbook, there is no airflow. Yes, laptops have vent(s) and a fan that blows out the hot air from the processor. However it’s not enough. And if you are playing video or surfing the web, this makes the processor work. Just moving your mouse an inch or two make the processor work. The processor is essential to your computer. It’s the brain and it’s the engine.

Your computer runs on electricity and electricity moves through the insides of your computer when it is running. Basic science tells you that electricity is hot. Laptops/netbooks, while designed to use less power, still have power running through them. If you have your computer on for long enough, the parts inside it will eventually heat up. All of that heat has to go somewhere. Unfortunately, current technology limits how much heat a laptop/netbook can get rid of and that’s not good for it’s parts. Computer parts work better the cooler they are.

It’s not just Firefox…

The above statement is true. Firefox is not the only browser that can heat up your processor. Some commentators of the CNET article mentioned that IE actually doesn’t use the CPU like the other browsers. Also, some fanboy was screaming at the top of his lungs about Opera. I made sure to include these two browsers in my little test.

Test sepcifications

Windows Vista Home Premium OEM 32-bit

HP dv9000 series laptop

Athlon Turion 64 X2

nVidia 8400M – Yes, one of the mobile GPU chips that suffered the huge overheating problems. Yes, the motherboard has already been replaced once.

3GB RAM

Besides the browser and a wireless connection, Object Dock, Adobe Photoshop (no open documents) and Windows Live Messenger were also open but running in the background.

Below you can view screenshots I took of various browsers and the Windows Task Manager.

In order: Google Chrome 3, Microsoft Internet Explorer 8, Safari 4 and Opera 10.10

As you can see each browser pictured above is using a sizable amount of processor power to run one tab displaying the MTV3 Firefox story page. Every page is displaying no less than 3 Flash ads and there is a fair amount of JavaScript being used on the page.

In order: Google Chrome 3, Microsoft Internet Explorer 8, Safari 4 and Opera 10.10

Not so busy anymore, is it? The web page pictured above is to the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s website local weather page. This page displays 0 flash ads and very little JavaScript.

The point of the story is that the media has chosen Firefox to be the culprit of your overheating CPU. While Firefox obviously uses your processor, so does every other browser. They have to use your processor. Not only do they need to just open and stay open so you can use it, they have to display the Flash ads and video you watch in your browser and process the programs that help you use web sites more efficiently.

In the end, there is just far more to the heat your laptop/netbook generates than you think. Don’t be fooled by media stories like this that try to scare you. Just remember:

Laptops and netbooks have very little space to where heat can escape.

Today’s web sites use technology which needs your computer’s power to run.

There’s no need to panic, the sky is not falling. Just remember that if you are not using your computer for a period of time, either close your browser or if you need to keep your browser open then put your computer to sleep or put it in hibernation. Putting it to sleep or in hibernation will save what you are doing to your computer’s memory or hard drive, respectively. This way, you can let your computer cool off and when you want to use your computer again, all of your information will still be there.

Google has released a developer version of the Chrome OS that they announced last July. VMWare image can be downloaded here.

I just tried it out, there is nothing but a browser, just Google Chrome browser and nothing else… So far…I wouldn’t recommend downloading and running it unless you are planning on reading the source code or contributing to the project. This is what you get after you login to Chrome OS
