Google Friend Connect had been updated with new newletter, users interests and widget functions in order be more personalized. Find out more about this update, here and on Google blog.

Ürün yöneticisi Mussie Shore, Friend Connect‘i şöyle anlatıyor; “Birini metroda görürsünüz ve uzun süre tek kelime etmeden aynı yöne doğru yürürsünüz.

Another one-two punch from Google. I couldn’t pass this one up. Today, Google unleashed its new Dashboard service. Google, of course, has myriad services and sites, which are available to anyone with a GMail address, sometimes automatically and sometimes on an opt-in basis. But with Dashboard, Google is aiming to aggregate all the data they collect and store for you, so you can control who sees it and how Google uses it with more certainty.

Google Dashboard offers a one-page glance of everything Google keeps on its servers with your name on it and lets you change settings for all of the included Google services. There are some interesting numbers on the Dashboard, too. For example, a quick look at mine reveals the number of Contacts, email conversations, and Reader subscriptions I have. It also provides detailed breakdowns about emails, shared and starred Reader stories, and even your Google Voice calls.

Hopefully, we will soon see some kind of export functionality, allowing us to track and manipulate the data Google has about us in our own ways. Examining our own personal usage patterns may offer new insights into what we use the most, the least, and in the best and worst ways. I expect that this is only the beginning of Dashboard, and it will become the central repository that Google hoped its Profiles offering would become.

Profiles, despite its functionality and decent value as a “personal Google hub” suffers from the requirement for opt-in, take-time-to-fill-out-another-profile problems. Another difference is that Dashboard is private and internally-facing: only you can view your dashboard. Profiles is external and open, if you choose.

Again, where Profiles wants to integrate with Friend Connect and get cozy on your homepage or blog, Dashboard wants to whisper to you and only you about what Google is storing for you. It also centralizes your settings, so you can more easily alter privacy and other settings for each service.

As a side-note, Friend Connect unfortunately doesn’t support WordPress.com (or vice verse) due to WordPress.com’s prohibition against javascript in their widgets. Otherwise, I’d probably toss into my already-stuffed right sidebar.

Take a look at your Dashboard and give us you take on Google’s move.

Google has rolled out a major update to Google Friend Connect, its service that lets small Web sites

Google has rolled out a major update to Google Friend Connect, its service that lets small Web sites (and some not-so-small ones, such as the Huffington Post) easily add community features such as comments, reviews and ratings, and the ability to friend other visitors.

There are a bunch of new features, all of which you can add to a site by pasting in code that creates gadgets on your pages.

You can create a questionnaire that asks new visitors about their interests, then puts their answers in their profiles and helps you customize content:

You can send out newsletters, using features that don’t compete with the richness of a MailChimp or Constant Contact but which do let you target visitors with specific interests and automatically roll in fresh content from your site:

You can insert a gadget on your site that automatically links to your content which Google thinks a visitor will like based on the questionnaire he or she filled out;

If you have Google AdSense ads on your site they’ll use the questionnaire info to try and increase their relevance to that particular visitor;

You get new analytics features which help you understand who’s visiting your site and what they’re doing there.

Here’s a video in which Google explains what’s new:

Eleven months ago, I wrote about the first version of Friend Connect, which I found needlessly confusing. I still don’t understand the service’s Members gadget, which presents me with a list of friends that includes easily-identifiable ones, vague ones (I know multiple Dennises), and totally confusing ones (who are you, Mr. Bad, Bad Man?):

Overall, though, today’s Google Friend Connect is neat–it does a lot more than the initial version, and Google has mostly taken care of another complaint I had back then–that the explanations of what the gadgets did tended to be cryptic. The company says that nine million sites now use Google Friend Connect, so it’s clearly caught on…

Recently I received an email from another artist with this inquiry: “I had a question …

Recently I received an email from another artist with this inquiry: “I had a question … how does one make money from a blog?” An easy question to pose, a complicated one to answer. Here is a quick look at a few ideas.

A blog can be used for multiple purposes, monetization (making money) being one of them:

Marketing: extends branding into new readership areas, and directs traffic to related sources.

Information: provides unique information, or additional useful information that supports a web site, newsletter, forum, web site, or social network sites (Example: Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Digg, and Delicious).

Relationship building: provides a service or information that followers can use and/or interact with (comments, newsletters, guest writer opportunities, or membership site subscription. Example: Google Friend Connect or Ning).

Monetization: provide various means to create money streams through direct and indirect means.

Making money from your blog may take several forms. Sales are generally generated either directly or indirectly. Direct sales are from your blog, by you, with your products and services. Indirect sales are created by referrals by way of other web technologies such as ad networks, or referred links to an online shopping cart, or your gallery website. Examples:

Direct: Sales of products or services sold from your blog

Products such as paintings, prints, drawings, or materials/tools relating to the creation of works of art

Secondary products based on your work such as calendars, t-shirts, or cards (Example: Zazzle)

Class sign up and payment page

Subscription class/lecture PDFs for fee

Webinars or online course (Example: Prfessor.com)

Video tutorials, web discussions, chats, or podcasts/vidcasts

Digital Ebooks (your work or thoughts)

Subscription blog articles

Self published books (Example: Lulu or Blurb)

Indirect: Referral information and links to related sources online

Links to another website, e-cart, or gallery site that sells or supports your products or services

Advertising using an ad network (Example: AdSense, Chitika, Amazon Associates)

Private ad sales (arrange with vendors you regularly do business with)

Think about what you want to do with your blog and optimize for your specific goals. Take a look at other artist blogs to see what they are doing, and choose the strategies that make sense to you. Once you have your solutions in place, don’t forget to revisit them on a regular basis to make sure you are still getting the results you want. Save money by using free tools (Example: WordPress, Blogger, Twitter, Facebook). As with anything else, it takes time to develop a strategy and carefully implement it.

O Google é meu pastor, e nada me faltará!

To aqui pra falar do Google Friend Connect.

Infelizmente eu não pude colocar o gadget aqui do lado no blog pra vocês verem, porque o infeliz do WordPress proíbe Javascript.

How To Integrate Facebook With WordPress Facebook is one of those Web phenomena that impress everyon

How To Integrate Facebook With WordPress

Facebook is one of those Web phenomena that impress everyone with numbers. To cite some: about 250 million users are on Facebook, and together they spend more than 5 billion minutes on Facebook… every day. These numbers suggest that we should start thinking about how to use Facebook for blogging or vice versa.

We did some research to find out how the integration of Facebook with WordPress and vice versa works, or — in other words — how you can present your WordPress blog on Facebook or use the functionality of Facebook on your WordPress-powered blog. Both of these can be achieved with a set of WordPress plug-ins, a couple of which we’ll present here in detail.

1. Integrating A WordPress Blog Into Facebook

Integrating a WordPress blog into Facebook is actually quite simply achieved via the Facebook API. The Facebook API makes programming applications that can be spread via Facebook almost a piece of cake. A lot of interactive browser games are on Facebook, such as the currently popular “Mafia Wars.” This game allows users to start a mafia family with their friends, with the goal of becoming an important figure in the virtual underground crime scene. To start a clan, you invite other friends on the network to join. This is the growth strategy of any application on Facebook: the simple snowball effect.

The applications sustain themselves through earnings generated by displaying advertisements, which also makes Facebook an even more attractive platform to develop on. This symbiosis generates growth for both Facebook and its applications.
Plug-In Installation and Configuration

John Eckman developed the WordPress plug-in Wordbook in early 2009. This plug-in allows WordPress blog owners to integrate their blog in Facebook. This gives a blog two lives: one as an application on Facebook (such as, for example, my private FreigeistBlog)

To access a blog via Facebook, you need to first grant access to the application. To do this, go to the so-called “canvas” page, which is where the Facebook twin of the blog lives (my example). However, granting access to the blog’s application means that the administrator of the blog also has access to information about you as a user (this is what most applications aim for: information such as date of birth, gender and educational status allows them to display quite targeted ads).

The application we’re dealing with is a simple blog and, in this sense, quite innocent, but we should state outright that the Facebook API as it is now treats blogs and websites as applications, which may not be appropriate, given the issue mentioned above. Facebook users who authorize the blog application can now easly send comments and share posts from within Facebook. The data, however, is still stored in the original database on the server where the blog is installed.

This makes it look as though Facebook serves merely as a simple feed reader. Yet, we get some other benefits. The blog on Facebook can be used to create a community around it by taking advantage of Facebook’s snowball effect, because friends of the blog’s users will see in their activity stream that they have been participating on the blog. Furthermore, it means that Facebook users will see new posts from your blog whenever they sign in to Facebook and can easily follow comments, making your blog more accessible.

To create a Facebook twin of your blog, first you have to set up a new application. To do this, you need a Facebook account and have to register as a developer using the preceding link. All of this can be done in a few minutes.

Create a new Facebook application

Once you have agreed to the terms of use, give your application a name. Then you will receive your API key and a secret, which you will need later.

Settings for the Facebook application. Large view.

Then, you have to submit a so-called “post-authorize callback URL.” This is the address on your server to which Facebook will send a notice whenever a user authorizes access to the application. By the same logic, there is also the “post-remove callback URL,” which receives a notice when a user removes the application. Both of these events are handled by the Wordbook plug-in. You merely need to write the address of the blog’s root directory with a trailing slash.

Facebook application settings: Define callback URLs. Large view.

The third step is to claim your canvas page, which is the page through which a Facebook user accesses your blog, and a canvas callback URL, which is the page from which content is retrieved. Again, include a trailing slash, or else internal links on your blog won’t work with their Facebook twin.

Facebook application settings: Define canvas page. Large view.

Now you have some choices to make, namely, how to set up your canvas page. You have a choice between iFrame and FBML. FBML is a Facebook XML scheme with which you can use specific Facebook tags (such as tags to display user profiles). You can also use it to access certain Facebook procedures. However, the Wordbook plug-in works with iFrames, which allow Javascript and other tags, and which FBML does not support.

To distinguish between them rather crudely, you can say that iFrames give the developer more flexibility but, unlike FBML, restrict access to Facebook procedures. Another advantage of iFrames is that code that Facebook retrieves from the canvas callback URL need not be parsed by the FBML parser, which could yield a performance gain. With iFrames, only internal links on the blog need to be adjusted. And the “resizeable” option allows Facebook’s JavaScript code to adjust the size of the iFrame to Facebook’s layout.

Now the hard work is done. All that’s left is to install the Wordbook plug-in using the standard WordPress method: install and activate. Then you can change the plug-in’s settings on the settings panel, and here you will need your application ID and the secret. You also have to tell the plug-in where the canvas page is located, so that internal links can be adjusted.

Adjusting the settings of the Wordbook plug-in

And that’s it! If you want, you could activate or deactivate some other options, such as the commenting function and whether users can add your application to their profile by displaying the latest posts from your blog in their profile.

Browsing through the blog via Facebook. Large view.

The plug-in allows you to play around a little bit. But as we said, you are somewhat limited in how fully you can integrate your blog into the Facebook canvas. But the next plug-in we’ll look at integrates a bit of Facebook into your blog.

2. Integrating Facebook In A WordPress Blog

To begin, a little history lesson is needed. Many users do not like having to register for each blog where they would like to post comments, especially if they already have accounts on so many other social networks, such as Facebook and MySpace. So a single online ID for several purposes would be ideal, wouldn’t it? That’s the idea behind the OpenID protocol, which started in 2005. It decentralizes the identification of users for various providers and services. In essence, you can create an account on Facebook and connect it to services such as MySpace or even a personal blog. If you want to change your profile for all of these services, that too is decentralized: you simply change the settings on your Facebook account. OpenID is a chance to make the Web and its services more easily accessible. There are reasonable risks and concerns involved, but also many opportunities.

Facebook announced in 2007 that it would implement OpenID, and others followed, which explains why we now find more and more buttons that say “Connect with Facebook” or “Google Friend Connect.” This leads us to our second plug-in, Facebook Connect WordPress plug-in, which almost seamlessly integrates Facebook into your blog.

The plug-in allows users to comment on a blog using their Facebook account; and if they are already signed in or on Facebook, they need not sign in again. Users do not have to register for a unique account on the blog because the plug-in retrieves the user’s information directly from the Facebook API. With access to the user profiles on Facebook, you can display your users’ profile pictures, which adds a personal touch to your blog.

The plug-in integrates a lot of Facebook functions: for example, users can send invitations and share stories and comments on Facebook, which gives your blog the benefit of word-of-mouth marketing. To do this, you need to activate the plug-in option that publishes a user’s activity in their respective activity feed. Last but not least, you can enable a gadget that displays the profile pictures of your blog’s most recent visitors, similar to “Google Friend Connect.”

When we first invited people to become Solvers on hypios, we were essentially asking them to create

When we first invited people to become Solvers on hypios, we were essentially asking them to create new online identities. We asked them to fill in personal details like their name, occupation, location, and interests. We gave them the option of adding a picture or avatar, and finally (politely) requested that they share their newly-created profiles with other Solvers by tweaking their privacy settings. Now, we’ve simplified things by adding a Facebook Connect button. You can join hypios using the Facebook profile you already have.

Having trouble keeping track of all your usernames and passwords?

It quickly gets annoying to have to fill out a new form with your name and hometown each time you want to join a site. Once you’re signed up, you have to remember which username and password combination you’ve used for each network. In theory, this protects your privacy. Social networking sites keep your data to themselves, in their own walled gardens, safeguarding your personal details. In practice, this can be frustrating. You may have befriended your colleagues on Facebook, but if you decide you want to contact them through Linked In instead, you all have to create separate Linked In profiles and reconnect through those pages. You also have to deal with the etiquette of different networks. As Patty Seybold notes in an Outside Innovation post, an executive who never checks his company email may reply instantly to casual messages sent via Facebook, moving business onto supposedly social platforms.

This poses an obvious problem for companies like hypios, whose platform is based on a social network of Solvers. According to a recent ReadWriteWeb post by Alex Korth, users’ most significant issues lay in having to sign up for multiple profiles, re-enter and synchronize personal data, and their inability to export this data (even though it was personal information). hypios’ success as a marketplace for solutions depends on our ability to broadcast problems to a wide network of Solvers. The more Solvers we can recruit, the better the chances that we can help Seekers find the solutions they need. If Solvers can join using existing profiles, they can also import the social networks they’ve built with these profiles.

How openID standards can make your identity portable

Fortunately, online identities are becoming more and more portable, thanks to open ID initiatives. OpenID standards allow you to create one account for several sites. The ID can come from an email account (on Google or AOL, for example), a social network profile (your Facebook or myspace account), or another single sign-on (SSO) provider. You sign in by giving your password to the ID provider, who then confirms your identity to a website or application. For example, if you want to use your Facebook account to log in to the hypios network, hypios will never see your password. Instead, Facebook checks your password and confirms your identity to hypios, keeping your account secure.

Some application providers have also become ID providers, namely Google and Facebook. Last December, both companies launched ‘Friend Connect’ features, which allow users to log in to different websites using previously-created identities. However, as blogger John McCrea pointed out in his post about the launches , Google’s connect feature is built on open-source technology, while Facebook’s uses its own proprietary sources. And while Facebook initially focused on integrating with major sites like Digg, Google promised to add a social component to any and every website by making it easy to cut-and-paste its code.

Who can you trust with your identity?

Of course, all of this depends on your trusting a provider with your personal information in the first place. There are privacy, security, and practical concerns:

One irate former Facebook user, Leif Harmsen, told a New York Times blogger that “Facebook does everything to make you more dependent,” such that “it is not ‘your’ Facebook profile. It is Facebook’s profile about you.” In fact, Facebook ended its Beacon program after users complained that purchases they’d made on partner sites were automatically posted as ’stories’ in their Facebook profiles.

Besides concerns over commercialization of personal information, there are security worries. Just as an OpenID provides users with access to multiple sites, it gives hackers the same freedom.

More practically, if an ID provider service goes down, users will be unable to sign on to any of the sites at which they use their IDs.

Why ‘open’ ID doesn’t mean ‘open to the whole Internet’

We think it’s important to remember that having an OpenID doesn’t mean that your profile becomes more open, though. (Even if Facebook is encouraging its users to make some elements of their profiles open to everyone on the Internet.) Though more and more websites will integrate social networks, ID providers will only reveal the details you’ve chosen to give out. It’s the same information, just displayed on more pages around the Internet.

As Alex Korth of ReadWriteWeb points out, however, ‘open’ IDs may eventually lead to interoperable IDs and a ‘web of identities’ much like the ‘web of data’ that will form the semantic web. Just as data will point to other data with URIs, social connections will point to each other through OpenIDs. Depending on how much information our friends share, a typical search query on the web of identities could poll social connections’ favorite books or vacation destinations by looking at purchase histories or status updates.

It could also help Solvers use each other as resources, whether by polling connections about the best new textbooks or soliciting advice on a scientific problem from like-minded people. At the very least, it could help Solvers find others who have worked on similar problems or have matching interests.

Given our interest in the semantic web, we think this could be a really exciting way to connect with people. No matter what ID provider you choose or how you use your online identity, we hope that openID integration will make it easier for you to become part of our network.

Google Friend Connect.

Google Friend Connect?

The following is an edited version of a wishlist I had been keeping on the side. The main idea is to

The following is an edited version of a wishlist I had been keeping on the side. The main idea is to define what would be, in my mind, the “ultimate social bookmarking system.” Which, obviously, goes way beyond social bookmarking. In a way, I even conceive of it as the ultimate tool for sharing online content. Yes, it’s that ambitious. Will it ever exist? Probably not. Should it exist? I personally think so. But I may be alone in this. Surely, you’ll tell me that I am indeed alone, which is fine. As long as you share your own wishlist items.

The trigger for my posting this is that someone contacted me, asking for what I’d like in a social bookmarking system. I find this person’s move quite remarkable, as a thoughtful strategy. Not only because this person contacted me directly (almost flattering), but because such a request reveals an approach to listening and responding to people’s needs that I find lacking in some software development circles.

This person’s message served as a prompt for my blogging this, but I’ve been meaning to blog this for a while. In fact, my guess is that I created a first version of this wishlist in 2007 after having it on my mind for a while before that. As such, it represents a type of “diachronic” or “longitudinal” view of social bookmarking and the way it works in the broader scheme of social media.

Which also means that I wrote this before I heard about Google Wave. In fact, I’m still unclear about Google Wave and I’ll need to blog about that. Not that I expect Wave to fulfill all the needs I set up for a sharing tool, but I get the impression that Google is finally putting some cards on the table.

The main part of this post is in outline form. I often think through outlines, especially with such a type of notes. I fully realize that it may not be that clear, as a structure, for other people to understand. Some of these bullet points cover a much broader issue than what they look like. But the overall idea might be fairly obvious to grasp, even if it may sound crazy to other people.

I’m posting this to the benefit of anyone who may wish to build the killer app for social media. Of course, it’s just one man’s opinion. But it’s my entitled opinion.
