I recently delivered a presentation on Session Based Test Management to the Auckland Test Profession

I recently delivered a presentation on Session Based Test Management to the Auckland Test Professionals Network. It was my first presentation. It was fun and I really enjoyed being there.

For me though, the enjoyment factor came afterwards in talking and discussing software testing with other testers.

I noticed something.

There were some testers that had come to learn something. Not everyone did but I’m sure most took away at least one idea or thought. And my thought is this – why don’t we (software testers in New Zealand) actually share our knowledge a lot more?
Some of us blog, a number attend SIGIST meetings, conferences etc but we then either sit on that knowledge or we’re not sure how to share it. IF we grow our community, our discipline then we all benefit!

I was talking to Farid Vaswani and John Lockhart amongst other wonderful testers there. They were very willing to share their own thoughts and ideas on testing and we had a great discussion and explored multiple testing ideas.

Which created a second thought – since we geographically limited,and we are not able to mentor or share and discuss ideas easily in a physical sense, there are a myriad of ways to achieve this online. So i created a Google group called Software Testers New Zealand. And while it’s aiming for a New Zealand flavour, it is in no way limited by country. So if you are outside of New Zealand and wish to become part of this growing community, feel free to join and share your ideas and thoughts!

By doing so, lets mentor each other and take the best from each other.

Happy testing!

Perhaps you are looking for the perfect marketing campaign that will not cost you a dime! I know that I am always looking for the perfect free marketing technique that I can apply to my internet marketing business. Knowing that nothing is perfect in the internet business, I still enjoy looking and dreaming of finding that one method that will make me rich!

Then today I read an eBook called The Joel Method that I have featured in my eBook section of my blog. I was pretty impressed with the idea of this particular method and quickly started creating a blog to see what kind of response I might be able to get. This book teaches you to work together with a Blog & Google Groups and sell affiliate products to people within the Google Groups.

In just the short time that I have been trying this method, I can see that the groups within Google Groups are slammed with spam (mostly porn). I am sure that they are very used to seeing spam and who knows how much they really pay attention to any posts within the group. I think that it may have to be looked at like when you perform forum advertisements. You need to join, get involved and try not to be looked at some spam driven sales person. Because of this, you could be looking at some time to build trust before you see any quick sales.

I will be sure to keep everyone updated on my response with this method and what it took me in order to get some sells, if any! Of course if you have any advice to give in this matter or share your success stories, please feel free to post them below and share with us all. You can read this eBook yourself by checking out the eBook section of my blog by click here.

C++ allows the programmer to do some really cool things. When writing code I try to follow the Google C++ Style Guide, so I haven’t gotten much experience with the fringe areas of default parameters. A question was recently asked on the comp.lang.c++.moderated usenet group where the OP wanted to place a member function as the default argument, a la:

class foo {
int getInteger();
void doSomething(int i = getInteger()) { }
};

Many of the responses said that he should overload
doSomething
as a nullary function and call the original
doSomething
with the return value of the member function. Within most of these comments was one from Neil Butterworth, who mentioned that the reason this isn’t possible is because the
this
pointer is not available until the body of the function. He offered that the OP could make
getInteger
a static function.

class foo {
static int getInteger();
void doSomething(int i = getInteger()) { }
};

And if you don’t believe him, you can use the Comeau C/C++ Online Compiler to see for yourselves.

I thought this was really cool. While I may not have a use for it at the moment, it is questions like these that are great conversation starters. About a month ago I subscribed to the clcm mailing list and I now recommend it to others as a way to learn different uses of C++ and interesting conversations about the language.

When you graduate from college, your circle of friends will inevitably do two things: #1 – Promise to visit each other and stay friends forever and ever and ever, and #2 – Create a mailing list with a clever title, like “She Wolves” or “Homies Sweet Homies.” Really, #2 is for when you realize that #1 won’t work out, especially if your friends are bankers.

The friends’ mailing list is sacred: within its archives, you will find serious discussions, biting arguments, soliloquies, confessions, rambles, insults, and of course, gossip. On my mailing list, some recent topics of conversation included: Halloween costumes, celebrity baby names, spelling, becoming fat because your friends are fat, thoughts on academic freedom/torture, and Miley Cyrus. Naturally.

Of course, besides heated discussion about talentless seventeen year-olds, the main purpose of the mailing list is to share absurd links with your friends. So, here are some obscure links from my industrious group of procrastinating friends.

I think: white, mid-40s, hippie parents with a questionable taste in first names.” See the picture above, from the link to Carnegie’s website. Yes, that is Ashley Tellis. Viva assimilation!

The Cat Game: Okay, I have to admit that my mom actually sent this to me. But then a college friend sent it as well, so I suppose my mom is just that cool (or, my friends are just that lame). This may ruin a good half-hour of your time, but it’s worth it when you finally corral that stupid black cat.

I’m co-teaching an educational technology course with Helen Barrett (@eportfolios). Instead of

I’m co-teaching an educational technology course with Helen Barrett (@eportfolios). Instead of using Blackboard, we’re trying to use all open technologies for the course. We are using Google Sites for the content and Google Groups for class communication (no Google Wave invite yet).

So far, so good except for a few small snags such as what to do about a gradebook. I’ve agreed to find a solution for this. I would like a gradebook that allows students to check scores whenever they want. Students already have a number of applications they need to create logins for so I would like to avoid one more if possible.

I was hoping to be able to use Google Docs Spreadsheet alone for the gradebook for this course. My goal was to make it possible to have one spreadsheet where all scores were entered by the instructors, and students could only see their individual scores. However, it doesn’t look like there is a way to give students access to part of a sheet or even one sheet in a Google Docs Spreadsheet. I could create a spreadsheet for each student but this would require too many clicks when entering scores.

I did some research on the use of a mail merge command in Google Docs. It looks like I would need access to scripts that aren’t available to all users so this idea is out for now. Therefore, I am planning to use the following plan (which breaks our goal of trying to use only open software in this course) unless someone from my Personal Learning Network (you) can provide another way forward:

Create a single Google Spreadsheet to enter student names, email addresses, and scores.

Share this spreadsheet with my co-instructor, Helen Barrett.

Enter scores as assignments are completed.

Each week, export the spreadsheet as a Microsoft Excel document to a folder on my computer.

Use Microsoft Word to create a MailMerge and send each student an update on their progress in the course.

Advantages:

This is technology I am familiar with and know that it will work, possibly saving me time and stress.

Students will get weekly feedback on their progress.

Pushing grades to students (emailing) may encourage them to check in on the course as they probably check email more frequently than they access the course.

Disadvantages:

This solution uses non-open technologies so university students who want to replicate this technique with their K-12 or adult ed students will need to have Microsoft Office. (All SPU students have Office 2007 or 2008 so maybe this isn’t a disadvantage.)

Students won’t have real-time access to their grades. They will have to refer to my last email to check on their grades.

I will have to remember to send out a grade update each week, which is unlikely so I will probably need a prompt from students or my co-instructor.

Although I’m familiar with this process, it may seem complicated to teachers who want to replicate what I’m doing.

Do you have any suggestions for me? The idea solution would:

Let students access grades whenever they want.

Let them use existing login information so they don’t have to create an additional account

Come at no cost to the students, a small annual fee for the instructor would be acceptable.

Provide common gradebook features such as the ability to have easily enter data and sort, create reports, and make calculated columns.

Internet Has Never Been More Dangerous, Report Says

A recent study spotlights the proliferation of malware keeps setting new records.

Between January and June, 2009, the number of rogue antivirus programs grew by 585%.

Banking Trojans for obtaining account information from financial sites has increased by 186%.

The number of infected computers rose more than 66% between fourth quarter, 2008 and June 2009.

One such cyber gang’s LuckySploit efforts attracted 90,000 visitors in 22 days resulting in a 7.5% infection rate, or 6,400 infected computers. This endeavor yielded $438,000.

The number of infected computers grew more than 66% to reach 12 million, or 54% of the computers scanned for the period of Q4 2008 and June 2009.

Botnet buries commands in image files

Researchers have found something new on the botnet scene. Instead of using traditional forms of a botnet’s command and control structure when communicating with its respective bots through IRC channels and now through Google Groups and Twitter, the DIKhora botnet communicates with its bots through image files.

The DIKhora botnet is primarily geared towards the downloading of other malware strains.

Malware ecosystem thrives thanks to pay-per-install fees

Using the affiliate model cyber criminals are making it easy for users to earn cash based upon the number of computers they can infect.

In addition to providing the malware people can purchase the software tools that allow for inspecting anonymously. In addition services are offered to ensure malicious webpages are prominently featured.

While price of infection varies based upon which country the computer resides, there is no money to be made for infecting computers that reside in Russia or the former Soviet Republic.

FBI warns of social networking fraud, malware escalation

News Bits has reported on the growing trend of hackers targeting people on social networks. Social networks carry with it an inherent network of trust, the hardest part for hackers to overcome when trying to engage innocent users. For hackers, people on social networks are the “low hanging fruit”. Just recently hackers found a way to automate the process of building a user page on Facebook that bypasses the entering of CAPTCHA information. As a result many Facebook profiles are able to quickly spring up; all from which hackers begin their work on other Facebook members.

US urges ‘cyber hygiene’ effort

October is National Cyber Security Month in the US. Calling on all computer users, citizens, industry and government alike, everyone needs to play a role in combating cyber crime by practicing good “cyber hygiene”.

87% of August’s e-mail is spam. Within an hour of someone receiving a phishing e-mail 60% of the recipients click on the link found in the rogue e-mail.

It scores over Convos (which I recently wrote about) with its very easy setup, useful help and simple web interface, although it doesn’t have some of Convos’ additional features.

During setup, admins can specify the name of the group they wish to create and the email addresses of the group members, along with the email address that will be used to send messages to group members (at the tgethr.com domain — yourgroup@tgether.com, for example).

Discussions are presented in Twitter-style message streams on the group’s Tgethr web site. Group activity is searchable, and administrators can use the web site to edit and delete messages, or entire conversations.

No one in your group really needs to use the Tgethr web interface, though; members can participate via email only if they choose. Tgethr supports two-way email encryption, Twitter-style #hashtags (which can simplify searches) as well as a few other useful tools, but the service is really very bare-bones, which may be exactly what you need.

Tgethr offers several pricing plans, ranging from a free starter plan to a $99-per-month plan with unlimited users and 20GB of storage. A 30-day trial is available at all levels.

If you need simple group email with the minimum of fuss, Tgethr may be for you.

A trojan targeting Google Groups turns newsgroups into a means for distributing command-and-control

A trojan targeting Google Groups turns newsgroups into a means for distributing command-and-control information for botnets.

“The trojan [dubbed Trojan.Grups] in this case is fairly simple,” wrote Gavin Gorman, security researcher for Symantec, in a post Friday on a Symantec blog. “But when executed, it logs onto a specific Google account and requests a page from a private newsgroup, which contains encrypted commands for the malware to carry out.”

In the past, Twitter has been used to deliver commands, by which an account was being used as a command-and-control hub to issue instructions to infected computers. Tweets coming from the malicious accounts were encoded and looked like a random combination of letters and numbers. But the tweets were actually being used to issue new instructions to bots.

“This is the first time a newsgroup being used as a command-and-control conduit,” Gerry Egan, director of Symantec Security Response, told SCMagazineUS.com Friday. “It establishes a two-way communications pipe, using a legitimate infrastructure.”

Experts believe this is just a test — research-and-development for malware writers to see if the idea is feasible.

“Based on analysis of the source code, Symantec believes this may be a prototype implementation, testing the feasibility of web-based newsgroups as command-and-control structures,” Gorman wrote. “Analysis also indicates that this trojan is seeking to remain discreet and undetected, being used to subtly gather information and potentially determine future attack targets.”

The reason that this sort of attack is attractive to cybercriminals could be the difficultly in identifying and shutting down such sources, Egan said.

“In a sense, it makes it harder to detect,” he said.

Trojan taps Google Groups as command network

Researchers have discovered hackers utilizing Google Groups to distribute commands. While spreading malware through newsgroups is not new, using groups for a command and control structure is new.

It is believed this particular instance is more of a proof of concept to show this concept can work.

Once infected with the Grups Trojan a computer will seek a page from the “escape2sun” private newsgroup. Commands to be carried out by the Trojan exist on this page.

Linux webserver botnet pushes malware

Organizations running legitimate Linux-based webservers, running Apache, have been discovered to have a hidden purpose of serving up malware. The legitimate websites were hacked to include hidden I-frames. When users land on one of these websites they receive the legitimate information over port 80. At the same time malicious traffic is sent to the user’s computer via port 8080.

Cyber criminals targeting small businesses

Because small to medium-sized businesses do not have the resources to keep up with necessary computer security, organized cyber groups, or cybergangs are targeting such businesses for purposes of stealing credit card numbers as well as personal information regarding the respective card holders.

In testimony for the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee, by installing simple to intermediate measures 87% of data breaches could have been avoided.

Domain-name abuse proliferates; rogue registrars turn a blind eye

Using phony information and paying with stolen credit cards, phishers are amassing domain names from which to conduct their attacks. Rogue registrars are turning an eye towards such practices as it means money coming in for the registrar. However, many registrars are working to discourage such practices by shutting off access to domains used by phishers.

In the 2nd half of 2008, 56,959 phishing attacks were launched using 30,454 unique domain names. 5,591 of those domain names were believed to have been registered by phishers. The remaining 24,863 domain names are believed to have been hacked domains from legitimate site owners. Using the Fast-Flux method, phishers can initiate attacks using over a thousand unique domain names in the course of a single day.

Web Censoring Widens Across Southeast Asia

Countries across Southeast Asia are looking for ways to dampen dissent towards official political stance that may traverse the Internet. While some countries lack the resources to implement filtering technology, as done by China, others are fearful of implementing such technologies due to either previous promises to their citizens about NOT restricting the Internet or the fear of loosing business through the location of international businesses. For those countries who are not implementing Internet filtering technologies they are seeking to quell dissent by changing their respective laws. While bloggers, video uploaders or users of social networks may not have their access to the Internet denied, they may find themselves in jail instead.

AT&T to FCC: gaming is not “broadband,” but an added service

In the last month News Bits reported a story whereby organizations are trying to define the term “Broadband” so as to be able to provide slower bandwidth speeds while still meeting the definition of “broadband”.

To add more to the debate AT&T wants to “suggest” that the definition of “broadband” ensure that online gaming is seen as “aspirational services” instead of a needed service.

Comment: Might influencing the definition of “broadband” be a preview of ways for broadband providers to legally skirt the issue of ‘Net neutrality when the definition provides neutrality to some applications but not others?

As the World Becomes Flat, Our Pipes Get Fat

A newly released report says bandwidth between countries has grown by 9.4 terabytes for a total of almost 25 terabytes. In 2007 the total was only 8.7 terabytes.

In 2008 international traffic increased by 61%. So far in 2009 the amount has grown by 79% over last year.

With connectivity growing to 444.3 million subscribers people, especially new to the ‘Net, are wishing to utilize bandwidth intensive social networking sites.

 Virus Writers in an effort to evade detection, they’ve begun hiding their command and control instructions in legitimate Web 2.0 sites such as Google Groups and Twitter.

It’s a concept very similar to that of chaffing and winnowing. Symantec has observed an interesting variation on this concept in the wild.

 Recently, security vendor Symantec spotted a Trojan horse program that’s been programmed to visit a private Google Groups newsgroup, called escape2sun, where it can download encrypted instructions or even software updates.

This week, I’d like to talk a little bit about social networking. Those of you who follow the blog, know that I’ve talked about this before HERE and HERE. I love connecting with people online. The question is, does it sell books?

The answer, like most everything, is… it depends.

There are many social networks to choose from. Some have a more targeted audience. Others have a broader appeal. In fact, according to this website, there are at least 350 places on the internet where you can network with others. I’m sure there are more.

So, what’s an author to do? Do you go on the big ones like facebook and twitter? Or try to target people through book readers’ sites like goodreads and shelfari? What about groups and loops on yahoo and google? Or social forums? As you can see, a person can lose a lot of time jumping from site to site to promote their books.

So, what’s an author to do? This question came up recently on the Romance Divas forums. An author wanted to know which sites she should join. Now, I don’t pretend to be an expert in this area, but I have suffered from burnout from being on too many social networks. My advice is to start small. There is no way that you will be able to keep up with ten or more different sites so don’t even try. Pick one or two and focus on those. Get to know the readers/viewers and become part of the community. As a reader I find that one or two lines in a poster’s signature is much more affective than a blanket “drive by” promotion post. I can’t tell you how many author’s websites I’ve checked out because the person offered advice, or chatted with me online.

Yes, getting to know the members of these groups takes time. One of the wonderful side affects of this method, however, is that you make friends. These are the people who will help you when you are struggling with your writing career or with life, the ones who will cheer with you and your successes. Writing is a very lonely job. The more friends you can pick up along the way, the greater your chances of sticking with your dream and meeting your goals.

But you can’t use a signature in places like facebook and twitter, you say. This is ture. Can accepting drinks and playing Mafia Wars really lead people to your books? Yes and no. You have to be smart. Put your website up as part of your profile, or start a fan page. Connect with others and offer areas where they can see your work. Just don’t do what some authors do and constantly spam your followers with promotional status updates and emails. It can annoy potential book buyers and drive people away from your work.

Walk away when your time is up. Seriously. That way, you can prioritize what’s most important: writing your next book.

So I want to hear from all of you. What social networks do you use? How much time do you spend on social networks? Do you think they are affective? Tell me. I want to hear about it!

A while back I started a group blog called NOLAFemmes but, in my busyness, haven’t taken time to “pimp” it. (I really don’t like the term “pimp”, even tho it seems to be the “cool” way of saying “share”.) It’s a group blog of women who live in/around New Orleans that I have read/followed and admired and invited to collaborate on the blog. The intention of the blog is to talk about women’s issues and/or New Orleans issues AND to promote positivity for our city. I really hope my out of town readers will check it out and participate via comments.

Also, I’ve been involved in a new Google Group that was initiated last Friday for those who love New Orleans. You don’t have to live here, you don’t have to be a blogger….you just have to love New Orleans and be interested in what’s happening here. Please join us! Here is the link to join.
