What caught me by surprise was the racially classified entrance into the museum. Your race is given to you randomly when you pay for your ticket at the ticket box, and this let’s one know whether to enter the museum through the ‘whites only’ gate or the ‘blacks only’ gate. This is done in order to give visitors a feel of what is was like to have race declared at random, resulting in what one could do and where one could go. I was classified as ‘white’ (Caucasian) even though I’m black, whereas my mother, who is also a black women, was classified as ‘black’ (African), therefore our entrances into the museum were different.

As I went about the tour inside the museum, I was taken aback by the absolute brutality of apartheid while looking at the images from renowned photographer Ernest Cole, which are displayed in the museum, from his book titled House Of Bondage.

The pictures depicted how the apartheid government caused the suffering of African people through forced labour with a pittance for a wage as well as the gross human violations that were instituted by the mining industry and living conditions that black people were forced to live under. The pictures showed women and children in dire poverty as they had been removed from their original homelands into poor townships of Johannesburg in an effort to scrape for a living. Police brutality was an everyday reality under the apartheid regime as I looked through images of bloody riots and random passbook checks (this is where police searched black people for their identity documents which they had to carry at all times when travelling the city or country. Failure to do so resulted in arrest. This passbook was called a ‘dom pass’).

This image depicts miners being stripped naked as part of a procedure by mines to check whether the potential miners are physically fit for underground work.

What I took from the tour was that my grandparents and my parents lived under terrible conditions that I couldn’t possibly even fathom. Secondly, the youth that lived under apartheid had something to fight for; they had a sense of purpose in their lives which is something that the majority of today’s youth lack. It made me question my own purpose and what it is that I’m contributing to this wonderful country of mine that is South Africa.

This image depicts a young child in a cramped classroom with no desks, chairs or adequate books. Teachers would often teach a class with over 40 children for a set number of hours throughout the day.

Even though I know my history and where South Africa has come from as a nation, I don’t think that we as today’s youth have fully gotten to grips with the savageness that was apartheid and how much blood was spilled so that we can have and experience this freedom.

We were friends, good friends at that, but there was something about you that made me feel like a lost, love-struck, gawky teenager who could barely string a sentence together when with the opposite sex.

So there we were; the two of us, left at the dinner table on a perfectly warm Jo’burg evening after our friends had to excuse themselves to rush off to sudden commitments. The air was crisp and the atmosphere on 7^th Avenue was exceptionally jolly. Cracks of laughter filled the air as people enjoyed each other’s company over good food, and hippies filled the streets with their shrieks of exuberance and brightly coloured clothing. They have always provided much needed entertainment by being great topics of conversation as their radical sense of self seems to amaze and amuse people.

‘But why did the other guys have to go so soon, leaving me all alone with him?’ I wondered. This must be the universe’s way of getting back at me for being attracted to him but having no guts whatsoever to admit it, so when I’m alone with him, we end up being entrenched in an atmosphere of awkwardness. I hope the awkwardness means that he feels the same way about me.

While sitting across each other at the dinner table in the dimly-lit restaurant while being serenaded with dreamy indie music and the relaxed chitter-chatter of diners in the background, my mind frantically searched for the next topic of conversation after we had critically analyzed the early exit of our friends. But the frantic search was interrupted by how strikingly handsome he looked in the dim light of red and orange hues.

His chocolate brown skin looked like it could melt with one touch of my hand; the twinkle in his eyes as captivating as finely polished diamonds, while his lips were inviting, commanding a kiss filled with uncontrollable passion. Besides his striking good looks, his personality is every girl’s dream. He’s the type of guy who makes sure that at the end of a bad day, a never-ending smile is placed on your face. When he asks how you’re doing after greeting you, he really means it and is concerned about what you have to say. He’s always cracking jokes and has the most infectious laugh that will leave you in stitches. He’s the best listener in the world and will not hesitate to be brutally honest as he values the people in his life to much to watch them live a lie.

He’s usually a great conversationalist, to the point where keeping quiet is almost a myth for him, but for some odd reason, tonight was his least talkative night. His lips began to move slowly as he uttered something that I couldn’t quite figure out. My eyes were still plastered on his succulently inviting lips, and I was still embroiled in a deep, passionate kiss with him in my imagination so much that it seemed like reality…

…Until he snapped his fingers in front of me, yanking me out of my day-dream and returning me to planet earth.

It was then that I learned that he was really talking to me, asking me what we’re going to do about the left-over slices of pizza that were splashed all over our table as if they were prizes from the oompa-loompas of Willie Wonka’s pizza division. I managed to master up a reply, telling him that we would have to ask for take-away packs for the left-over pizza.

Silence then filled the air.

I could hear the ticks of an imaginary clock beating away like a gigantic drum as they counted the seconds that passed. I could feel sweat drip down my forehead as I looked at him in awkward anguish, hoping that he would say something to break the silence that held our mouths hostage. He looked down at his brown leather watch as if hoping that it will mysteriously swallow him in. He then proceeded to look around the restaurant at the jolly diners that surrounded us. They seemed like holograms; pixilated images on a screen that surrounded us in an attempt to make us feel as though we were not really alone.

I was about to explode with nervousness when, by some miracle, I managed to string together to comment about how wonderful the restaurant was and how exceptional the pizza had been, to which he replied ‘I agree!’.

A dark, death-like silence filled the air once more.

He looked down at his brown leather watch again before turning his plate around as if he was changing the angle of the pizza slice that was on it. When he eventually looked up at me, I flashed an awkward smile coupled with a slight nod. I’m convinced that the nod was caused by the awkwardness beating my head against an invisible wall in as slight a manner as possible while causing a reflex action in the muscles in my cheeks. I simply sat there numbly for what felt like an eternity, plastered to my chair as if I was super-glued on it.

All conversation between us had died out. There was nothing, not a single utterance.

In fact, conversation between us had never even existed, except for the two-worded Q&A session we had about the left-over pizza slices.

In the silence, I began asking the Lord for a miracle, and not long after my plea, a savior came to our table.

She was dressed in a Heavenly white shirt and well-fitted black trousers and she carried a tray. She was quite short and petite; a neatly packaged young woman with long, brunette hair and a fringe that added a touch of glamour to her hair. She was exceptionally jolly for a waitress who seemed to be running around quite busily attending to quite a number of diners all at once. There were a few waitresses working that night, and even though the resturant was comfortably full, hungry diners can be quite a handful if the adequate manpower is missing. In all my anguish at the awkward silence, my eyes managed to read her name tag, and I learned that her name was Sarah.Even though she was busy that night, she seemed happy at tending to diners, to the point where I thought that she loved being a waitress.

In the most angelic yet jovial voice I ever heard, Sarah asked ‘do you guys need anything else or can I get the bill?’. We both jumped up, almost falling off our chairs and knocking down the dinner table to belt out a life-saving ‘yes!’. At that moment, we both looked at each other with embarrassment, as if we knew that we had confessed our need to remove ourselves from each other’s presence.

A split silence filled the air as the embarrassment swept through like a quick gust of wind, until I gathered tons of courage and asked for the bill and for the table to be cleared. It didn’t take long before Sarah brought the bill. The adrenaline rush that I experienced throughout this evening left me feeling numb yet jumpy, and everything seemed to move in slow motion before proceeding to excelerate in at an astronomical speed when I needed to be conscious.

So when Sarah handed us the bill, I whipped out my purse like a crazy person wanting to leave a mental institution. My forced date and Sarah gave me an awkward look before pretending that the moment never happened. My date then decided that he would settle the bill, to which I gave a spastic approving nod.

‘At last!’ I sighed silently in my mind, The ordeal was over and I could return to being human again.

Once my savior Sarah had been paid, I forced my numb body off of the chair I was sitting on and I tried to walk as normally as possible, even though I felt as though I would lose my balance. Luckily, he walked in front of me, so he couldn’t see me wobble as I attempted to walk as normally as possible.

As soon as we were outside the restaurant, we turned to each other to say goodbye.

I was afraid of looking too deeply into his eyes as my body would lose all balance and topple me over, so my eyes bounced all over the place. With a slight chuckle from the both of us, we both lied to each other and said that we had a good time. After a short awkward silence, he said goodnight, gave me an impersonal side hug and walked away without looking back.

I stood on pavement for a while, feeling the calm after the storm and feeling like I wasted what seemed like an eternity of my time. At least I could breathe again and all my senses returned to me. The gawky, love-struck, teenage-like girl was gone; pressure was lifted off my shoulders. It was refreshing, as if I had been splashed with ice-cold water after being removed from a furnace.

I can’t help but feel that the evening would’ve been perfect had I not been left alone with you.

How popular your site is, how many visitors your site get and how long they stay on it also goes towards how Google ranks your site.

The number of incoming links and the strength of the links, how credible they are also helps your site move up the pages in organic Google searches.

Google Adwords https://adwords.google.com/ if free service from Google that allows us to see what Keywords and phrases people are searching for when using Google.

The results give the Global Search results and a Local Search results, it is important to select your country of origin and your chosen language to get an accurate reading.

The Global Search will remain the same regardless if you do not select Ireland in our case but if your business is local and not global the local search becomes more relevant.

You can select several Key Words and download the directly into an excel spread sheet so you add them to campaigns or website SEO.

Allintitle:

One of the most important tools to be aware of is the all in title tag which is allintitle: When you do a search in Google put allintitle: (As you see it here) this gives the true competition on your Key Words. 

Example: Google SEO Search allintitle: 15,200 Global 12,100, local 58, , Competition Low

I used this phrase because the number of webpages with this exact phrase in a Google  Search is only 15,200 meaning my true competition is manageable. Google Keyword Tool tells me the competition is Low this means my competitors are not biding on these keywords which is good for two reasons my cost to bid on these keywords will be low and I have a better chance of been found in Google organic search. 

One tip that Nev offered up was to use a Google Images search to see where a face pic or other image has perhaps been previously used. He, of course, does this with people to help identify images. But, it can be used to help identify many other images’ origins or usage. 

I will generally take the image I am interested in and save it to my photo files.

Here you receive a prompt to paste or upload a file.

The downloaded or pasted photograph is loading (the search is commencing).

Here I had downloaded a photograph of a board of collectible whistles from an antique show I had taken. It showed the photo had only been used in a post I had previously written for SwittersB.

For fun, give it a try on faces, other images and you might be surprised on who ‘borrows’ what to create new personas (faces, tattoos, cars, fish, flies etc.)

It’s always quiet after the storm has subsided; only debris is left to tell the tale of the destructive madness that went on a few moments before.

Luckily you survived. Sure you have a few cuts and bruises on your body, but you can heal from them right? It’s just your heart and mind that I’m concerned about.

Storms have a way of imprinting messages in our hearts, and they do this so subtly that we don’t notice them. Most of the time, these messages are negative and erode at the esteem as if they were acid eating away at flesh. But not to worry because you’re stronger than that.

You have merely curled up in an attempt to regain your composure and continue with the good fight of faith, love and life, but while you’re sitting there in that room that reeks of destruction, remember that you survived the storm because you’re worthy and have purpose.

Allow the wounds to heal, uncurl yourself, and continue walking.

Many of you may be familiar with Google Images.  It LOOKS like a place that you can download and use really cool pictures.

BUT:  There are NUMEROUS disclaimers (I would argue, not posted clearly enough for “Reg’lar  Folk” to find them, but that’s a story for another day).

In this story, a client downloaded a fairly mundane image of people sitting in nondescript room for use on her business website.  There was no clear indication that the image was copyrighted, and that use might incur a fairly substantial licensing fee.

So, several months after posting the image, she gets what we call in the Biz a “Cease and Desist Letter” from representatives of Getty Images.  She immediately removes the image from her website, but Getty insists, continuing to contact her, and demanding $700.

My opinion is that this constitutes a shakedown by Getty Images, perhaps with the tacit involvement of Google, and she should absolutely not pay, and ignore all further contact relating this situation.

While yes, you have to be very careful that images you download are “public domain” or “free” and do not require permission/licensing/royalties before you use them, Google Image and Getty Images, HUGE players in this arena, seem to me to be using deceptive acts and practices against innocent people who cannot reasonably understand the “notice” provided that the images “may” require consent/approval/licensing/permission/PAYMENT OF MONEY to them before you use the image.

The reason we believe this is illegal activity, is it falls within various consumer protection laws, not the least of which is the New York Deceptive Acts and Practices Law.

Google Image Search: Search By Image!

When you go to Google Images, you see this:

The little camera is the new feature, “Search By Image”. Our example this week will use Van Gogh’s painting Starry Night.

When you click on the camera, you have 2 options:

Either you can paste in a URL, or upload an image. To paste a URL, find a webpage with an image that you want to search for (in this case, Starry Night)

Copy & Paste the URL (boxed in red) into the Google Image Search

OR, to use the “Upload an Image” side, simply click the words “Upload an Image”, and upload the photo as you would for any other site.

Then, you get to the fun part – analyzing your results. Here is a breakdown of what happened when I searched using the Starry Night picture:

There are 6 main parts to this.

1 – Alternate Sizes: Useful for finding a wallpaper or thumbnail quality version of the picture.

2 – Google’s Guess: What Google thinks you would search to find the image

3 – Results: Google results if you searched “Google’s Guess”

4 – Visually Similar Images: As the name says, images that look very much like the one you searched

5 – (Sometimes) Blurb: Sometimes, Google will have its own set of information, like it does for Starry Night, and will give you a blurb of what it knows.

6 – Websites with this image: Helpful if you want to find where you got the image from, or other sites that may relate to the topic. As the name suggests, it finds other websites with the image.

Believing that what you had is better than what you have is a sure way to kill off any life that you still have left, and the potential of what you can be in the present time becomes wasted.

Life has a way of holding back the blessings of newness if you keep wishing for the dead things in the past. And what makes you think that what you had is better than what you have, and that you’ll never find anything better than what you had?

Do you not know that when one door closes, Love won’t let you fall by the wayside, and a door that you never dreamed possible; a door that you’ve always felt you were never worthy of will open? It’s only fear, a struggle to move on and a belief that happiness is not your portion in life that taints your judgement and makes you believe that worst is yet to come.

But at the end of the day, one thing remains true, and that is you can’t move forward if you keep looking back.

Carefully selected winners of an online competition, 8000 of them, will then personally attend a “special pick-up experience” in New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles to collect their prize – Google Spectacular Spectacles. Great name, don’t you think? Google calls them Google Glass, which sounds disappointingly bland to me. On the other hand, voice command OK, Spectacular Spectacles! How do I say Sweet in Swahili? might be a bit cumbersome to yell while you are parachuting down to Google Earth from Google Skies.

As Google admits, “We’re still in the early stages, and while we can’t promise everything will be perfect, we can promise it will be exciting.” The bold, creative individuals are going to see for themselves just how imperfect, and twit about the level of their excitement.

Perhaps, Google hopes to get more positive early buzz from die-hard fans who paid, twitted and won, rather than harping skeptics who didn’t. No fun being a dork unless you have to pay $1,500 for the privilege! (a random comment under the related article in The Guardian). 

Quite a few parody videos have popped up on YouTube since the announcement and the official  How It Feels [through Glass] video.

Should Google Image become a feature of Google Glass, there might be problems as well. Take a look at the image below, for example (not anything you’d find in my house — my plans are never this neglected):

You tell them things that you’ve never shared with another soul and they absorb everything you say and actually want to hear more. You share hopes for the future, dreams that will never come true, goals that were never achieved and the many disappointments life has thrown at you.

When something wonderful happens, you can’t wait to tell them about it, knowing they will share in your excitement. They are not embarrassed to cry with you when you are hurting or laugh with you when you make a fool of yourself. Never do they hurt your feelings or make you feel like you are not good enough, but rather they build you up and show you the things about yourself that make you special and even beautiful.

There is never any pressure, jealousy or competition but only a quiet calmness when they are around. You can be yourself and not worry about what they will think of you because they love you for who you are.

The things that seem insignificant to most people such as a note, song or walk become invaluable treasures kept safe in your heart to cherish forever. Memories of your childhood come back and are so clear and vivid; it’s like being young again. Colours seem brighter and more brilliant. Laughter seems part of daily life where before it was infrequent or didn’t exist at all.

A phone call or two during the day helps to get you through a long day’s work and always brings a smile to your face. In their presence, there’s no need for continuous conversation, but you find you’re quite content in just having them nearby. Things that never interested you before become fascinating because you know they are important to this person who is so special to you.

You think of this person on every occasion and in everything you do. Simple things bring them to mind like a pale blue sky, gentle wind or even a storm cloud on the horizon. You open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day, and in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible.

You find that being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure that’s so real it scares you. You find strength in knowing you have a true friend and possibly a soul mate that will remain loyal to the end.

Life seems completely different, exciting and worthwhile. Your only hope and security is in knowing that they are a part of your life.

I’ve merely gone out to the desert land because life has hit me with a ton of bricks on my heart and I no longer know what I’m living for. The bricks have been coming for a while, but at least they were stopped by the vibrancy that once existed; that I once knew so well.

I don’t talk to you because I no longer know what to say. I laugh with you and rejoice with you because I still want to be a good support system, but deep inside I don’t want to be in your presence because it feels like an enormous emotional task for which I have no energy.

I don’t hate you when I don’t greet you; it’s just the resentment acting out in repulsion for what I currently feel for you. I cared for you the best way I could, and I allowed you to use me for your own gain for which I am utterly ashamed.

It’s not that I’m anti-social; it’s that I’m disillusioned at how hard I had to work for your friendship and your trust that I wonder if you’re still worth pursuing even though I have what I wanted from you. I’m glad that you’re genuine with me, but I hate that I had to morph myself to your expectations and your liking in order for you to consider me worthy of your love.

I wish I could tell you the truth about how I really feel and what I’ve been doing for the past year, but your judgmental attitude is too much to bear. My smile will return again and I’ll fully know what it means to be happy. But please, don’t force me to be your superwoman or give of myself because I have nothing left to give. I have gone just for a little while; I’ll be back when things get better. It will be soon, so don’t worry about me.
