The free application, Google Latitude, introduced earlier this year for a variety of cellphones, was originally designed to let friends see each other’s locations and then contact each other via SMS, IM or phone to meet up when they’re in close proximity.

Now, by enabling a new location history feature, users can store, view and manage their own past Latitude locations as well. With Google Location Alerts, meanwhile, they can be notified when friends are nearby, thereby avoiding the need to keep checking Latitude for updated activity.

Both new features were popular feature requests, software engineer Chris Lambert noted in announcing the changes on the Google Mobile blog.

The announcement that Google is to acquire Admob for $750 is significant news for the mobile advertising sector.

Admob has had good success in the mobile pay per clicks market and benefited from the growth in smartphones such as the iphone and Blackberry, along with increased flat rate data plans. Google has made a substantial investment in the mobile sector, particularly with their mobile OS, Android. However, it hasn’t made any significant advances in the mobile PPC market. Similar to it’s policy with YouTube, Flickr, Blogspot etc, Google has acquired a leading player in the market through Admob.

A statement issued by Google said that: “While this industry is still in the early stages of development, AdMob has already made exceptional progress in a very short time,”

The feeling amongst industry experts is that it is good news all round. It demonstrates Google’s committment to mobile and Admob’s success in the market.

After a month I’m ready to write about which applications I downloaded for my Ipod Touch: Face

After a month I’m ready to write about which applications I downloaded for my Ipod Touch:

Facebook client for Ipod is really fantastic. I often prefer to use it instead the web application. Everthing works flawlessly, from notifications to youtube video links. The best social network mobile software.

Price : Zero - Vote: 9

The free version of Twitterrific shows some ads but they don’t bother me; the layout is really clear, easy to use and, like FB, absolutely preferable to the web interface. The Pro version has some advanced stuffs and it costs 2.99€.

Price : Zero - Vote : 9

The Google Mobile software for Ipod/Iphone is simply a short link to the real Google pages, open by Safari. Because Safari and Google web pages works very well…Ok, that’s it: not really useful but convenient. Where’s the Wave appli???:-))

Price : Zero - Vote : 6

AppBox Pro is probably the most downloaded application for Ipod/Iphone. It’s a collection of tools, from a battery checker to a ruler. At this price it’s a must for everyone.

Price : 0.79€ - Vote : 8

Despite Ebay is a very rich website with a lot of stuffs to control the software for Ipod/Iphone is very well done and usable (maybe in combo with Paypal appli;-)) for check auctions when out of home.

Price : Zero - Vote : 7,5

For a fan of beer like me, to have a beers’ bible, Beer Brands, in my hand is really convenient (I know many of them, but…;-)). More than 7000 different brands with really few advertisings.

Price : Zero - Vote : 8

Kotoba! is a wonderful japanese vocabulary, with a very rich database (obiouvsly Jim Breen’s EDICT) and a perfect interface.Fantastic.

Price : Zero (!) - Vote : 8.5

Allsubway is a big (in terms of bytes!) appli with the most important subways of the world. You can see a map and zoom on it, like a paper version. Often up to date by the author. At this price is useful.

Price : 0.79€

Vote : 7

Linkedin website is very well realized but the Ipod/Iphone appli lacks some features and imho you cannot use it as a substitute of its “big” version. Hope it will be improved.

Price : Zero - Vote : 5

Talking Japanese is a very useful application with a good phrasebook written in romaji and japanese with audio features!Cool and yasuiii!

Price : 0.79€ - Vote : 7.5

Tokyo Underground is a good software about Tokyo Metro system, with a map, POI, search features and GMap compatibility.

Price : 0.79€ - Vote : 7

Probably I expected too much from Find!Tokyo. I dreamed about a Tokyo’s bible with everthing in one single appli, without internet connection!Instead is a not so big collection of maps, easily findable on internet, with few POI and a large zoomable map. The starting point is good but it needs great improvements (and a greater price will be good in this case); with this content it’s a 1€ software max..

Price : 3,99€ - Vote : 5

Enjoy also the other software I downloaded/bought (the n.1?Obiouvsly Skype, the father of all modern software…And I haven’t a microphone!:-)), someone is for italian people only.

Earlier this year, the Google Mobile team launched Google Sync which allows users to synchronize their Gmail Contacts and Google Calendar with their iPhone, Windows Mobile, and S60 devices.

Today, Google Mobile added Gmail support to Google Sync for iPhone, iPod Touch and Windows Mobile devices.

From the Google Mobile blog:

Using Google Sync, you can now get your Gmail messages pushed directly to your phone. Having an over-the-air, always-on connection means that your inbox is up to date, no matter where you are or what you’re doing. Sync works with your phone’s native email application so there’s no additional software needed. Only interested in syncing your Gmail, but not your Calendar? Google Sync allows you to sync just your Contacts, Calendar, or Gmail, or any combination of the three.

All ears will be on what Motorola (MOT) has to say about phones using Google’s (GOOG) Android operating system when the company reports Q2 earnings this Thursday, writes Broadpoint/Amtech analyst Mark McKechnie in a note to clients today. McKechnie has a “Neutral” rating on the stock and believes the business excluding handsets — meaning embedded and networking products — is worth about $5 per share, with the rest of the value being an “option” on success with Google down the road.

McKechnie’s estimate for the June quarter is a bit above the Street, at a net loss of 3 cents per share on sales of $5.7 billion versus the Street at -$.04 and $5.6 billion. He also believes the company can deliver more than expected in the September quarter as Android-based handsets begin to show up in its results. He’s forecasting breakeven on $6 billion of sales, versus consensus 1-cent-per-share loss on $5.8 billion.

McKechnie believes Mot may see 500,000 units of Android phones in Q3 and 1.3 million in Q4. That could lead to $600 million in incremental revenue with a 15% operating profit, assuming an average handset price for Android devices of $300, writes McKechnie. Motorola’s results will still be dragged down by its existing portfolio, he writes, but in 2010, 10 million handsets at that $300 ASP and assuming a 10% operating margin could yield an extra ten cents per share on current estimates, he writes. McKechnie is forecasting 30 cents per share profit in 2010 on $25.2 billion in sales.

Motorola shares today are up 2 cents, or .3%, at $6.76.

Google has added location-based search capabilities to the iPhone 3.0-enhanced version of its mobile-device website.

Now when you initiate a search in the iPhone’s browser, you’re first asked whether Safari can use your location, then if Google can. If you assent, and then tap on the Local link at the top of Google’s results page, the link list will reflect your location.

Allow Google to know where you are, and it will find tasty treats in your ‘hood

Your location will then be saved, and further searches will continue to reflect your location. Should you change your physical location, you can update Google’s knowledge of your whereabouts.

If you’d prefer that Google not know where you are, navigate to Google’s iPhone-specific web page, tap Preferences, then clear your saved locations, turn off device location, or both.

If you don’t want Google to know your whereabouts, don’t tell them

Location-based searches are currently available only in the US and the UK, but in a posting on the Google Mobile Blog, Joshua Siegel, product manager on the Google Mobile Team, writes “Look for other country and language combinations soon.”

Siegel also says that “As always, your privacy is one of our top concerns.” Not that we don’t fully trust our friends in Mountain View, but we take Google’s privacy promises with more than mere grain of salt.

Also, while localized searches can be convenient and helpful, we can only assume that location-based ad-targeting can’t be far behind. ®

Here’s an interesting article on how to manage yourself using a Blackberry. Some of the applications mentioned (read: ToDoMatrix and IdeaMatrix) are bit costly and might not be for everyone but there are some free tools mentioned as well that are worth checking out.

********************************************************************

Really Use Your Blackberry to Manage Your Life and Business
By Stephen L Scott

You know the scene. Blackberry users are a loose club. Own a Blackberry – you’re in. When we see each other we compare notes on the best programs to add. We all are looking for ways to make our lives faster and easier to manage.

Personally, I need to be flexible. One moment I’m at my desk working on an email. Two minutes later I’m sending a reply but now I’m down the hall or even heading for the car. Blackberry to the rescue.

Now on my third blackberry over four years, I’ve had the chance to try lots of programs. This is the list of the best ones that work for me.

Wall Street Journal reader for Blackberry. Use it several times a day. Very quick to scan headlines. Then click for summary and click again to get the full article. Did I say this is free! So far they are not charging for blackberry users. The app will send articles to anyone in your phone book, Facebook, or quick link to your email. Also has custom search and your portfolio is automatically updated.

HP 12C Financial Calculator. This one will cost $13. Works perfect. I took the basic calculator off my phone. You can chose RPN or algebraic. Check it out at lygea.com

Project Manager – Task List. And fully searchable free form database. Rexwireless offers a bunch of software solutions. I chose two that fit my needs for flexible and detailed task and project management and another to handle all of the databases and notes I want to carry with me. (I replaced a palmtop computer with the blackberry). ToDoMatrix and IdeaMatrix work very well. Most people that use them claim they are the best applications available. They integrate well with the rest of the BB apps. All of the data is automatically and instantly synced with the web-based versions. So you can work on the phone or on the web. Customer service has been incredible when needed. They also offer enterprise level versions where the whole company can share data. Best application on my BB, I live in these applications. Cost is $60 each or both for $100.

Google Mobile products. Google has several great tools. I use some but not all. GoogleMaps goes right on top. Love the live traffic updates and quick searching for a place I need by just scrolling to the general area on the map and searching. GoogleSync is critical for me to automatically back up my calendar and addressbook. You will need a Google account, then you sync with an online calendar and addressbook. The calendar can then be shared with staff. Watch who takes priority with the gmail/sync. I recommend you back up the BB databases using the desktop and cable also. Sync works well, but is confusing until you get the preferences right.

Google also has a gmail client for the blackberry. I use this for email sometimes. Mostly to get email that I’ve already removed from the BB. (I frequently delete the BB email to clear memory.) But with gmail I can find anything for years back.

Beyond411 Quick location based and every other type of search too. I use this as my first line of search. Don’t have to open a browser to start searching. Just quick type and click. It is location based so it is great for finding a place you need close by. It gives maps, directions, addresses and phone numbers. Just click on the phone number and you’re making table reservations! It also does general web searches, white pages, and 1000 more special searches so you only get the type of responses you want. It’s free and used a lot. Faster than calling 411 and let me it say it again, FREE. You can find it at thebogles.com.

eOffice. Recently paid the money so I could write Microsoft Word docs and Excel spreadsheets. $30.00 Dynoplex offers this. It is difficult to use though. Email or Tweet me for an update on how I resolve issues in being fully mobile with office tools.

What are your favorite apps? Just let me know.

In my last post, I explored why marketers and Internet businesses should tie “social marketing” metrics to true business metrics, and some ways they might consider doing so. The reason this is important is because most ad-supported consumer sites are being forced to add social elements, and most social sites are being forced to add ads. Understanding the business value of a user-generated “ad”/lead/brand reference has become an important thing for product managers and marketers to know so they can maximize the use of social media when building and advertising products.

In this post I will address the question “What is YouTube worth to Google?”, by focusing on some of the lesser known ways that YouTube creates a great deal of value by fortifying Google’s core business.

The original article What is YouTube worth to Google? assumes that products like YouTube – or Android or Google Search or Google Earth or whatever – can only be valued by the direct revenue that they provide (user fees and/or advertiser fees), however, there are at least 4 other value drivers that should also be considered. I will start with 3 which are often over-looked, but end with the big one which dwarfs the rest.

1. Preserving Google’s Marketplace Liquidity.

Google’s enormous network effects stem from the fact that it has created a marketplace and marketplaces are very difficult for late-comers to build. The only way the advertising marketplace works is if you can bring both users and advertisers – two different segments to build and sell against. It is obviously most common to start with users and then find advertisers who care about those users.

YouTube has done a great job of bringing a lot of users to the table for Google’s advertiser base to monetize. Google advertisers are loyal to Google’s platform because it is the place that provides the highest volumes of sales leads (people clicking ads). Google must ensure that they always have the most advertisers by ensuring that they always have the most users (ad clicks). YouTube should get credit, then, not just for ad clicks on YouTube, but its impact on advertiser retention, and ad quality (ad quality is correlated with the amount of attention spent optimizing Google ads. Over Google’s volume, ad quality and thus click rate = beaucoup bucks).

2. Lifting Google’s Marketplace Performance and Prices.

It’s a little dubious to me how much value a person’s video search behavior is worth. That said, over Google’s and YouTube’s user volume, there is certainly some video behavior (content and format preferences) that advertisers can use to create more targeted ads and thus improve click-through rate. Again, the more liquid the market, the more this behavioral data is worth to Google.

3. Google Employee Morale.

We’re getting a little soft and fuzzy here, but bottom line, employees love hearing about their company in the news and amongst friends, and they also like growth opportunities. Having YouTube in the Google family potentially improves employee retention and employee turnover is perhaps one of the biggest risks to the Google empire. Yes, you are only as good as your employees, but even moreso, Google does not want to bring in the brightest most entrepreneurial minds they can find, give them the most cutting edge learning and then watch them leave to the next big competitor.

4. Google Brand Value. [The Big One.]

Free Marketing = More Users, More Consumption per User, More Pricing Power, and Greater Barriers to Entry for New Competitors (which prolongs all of the first 3 benefits). News that is generally positive in nature, either corporate news or non-corporate news (blogs) – and by extrapolation all of the social conversations that this news creates – is like free brand building. And probably even more impactful than brand advertising since it is done by third parties, and is thus “truthier”.

Ironically, while Google benefits from the billions of dollars being spent each year in brand advertising, Google is in fact NOT SPENDING A DIME on “corporate advertising”, yet is receiving the same benefit that a business spending billions per year would receive. In fact, I wouldn’t even judge the benefit by the cost savings of not needing to advertise, I would judge the benefit by the business equity created.

According to the InterBrand / BusinessWeek study, the net present value in real dollars of Google’s brand was $25.6B in 2008. That is up $7.8B (43%) from 2007. BusinessWeek cites that “innovations like Google Mobile, Google Docs, Google Book Search … and its core search business … extended the brand’s reach.” If BusinessWeek or Google were to study how much lip service was being given to each of Google’s products and then attribute this $7.8B in value creation proportionately across the products, it’s safe to assume that several of Google’s products accounted for north of $1B in value each, simply by being innovative enough for people to talk about.

One caveat is that brand strength can only be turned into brand equity if there is indeed a business model where there are customers to charge, untapped new consumption to serve, and the ability to raise prices (without a business model, supporting customers with free products is actually a huge cost).

And yes, brand equity can be lost and gained quickly. But the purpose of the study is to evaluate the real market value that the brand equity can create, from the ability to raise prices, to the ability to sell more units with essentially the same feature set (and thus resource investment), to the barriers of entry that Google’s brand favorability awards them against potential competitors in each of its markets. These competitors must spend billions of dollars to build a brand that can compete with Google’s. There aren’t many businesses, now or in the future, that will be able to out-spend Google on both product innovation and brand building. It’s kind of funny, but a newcomer will probably have to out-publicize Google in order to divert its resources into out-innovating Google. And vice versa.

Even when you put aside the revenue streams that might occur from Google Mobile or Google Docs or Google Book Search, the NPV of the brand equity has already paid the investment off in spades.

Lesson: Build a business that a large set of customers will pay for, and then pour your resources into constant and continuous innovations and PR, not advertising. (note to Microsoft and GM)

Trend: Ironically, companies may seek to shrink ad budgets and spend that money on viral applications, communities, events, and other ways to get users to evangelize their brand and products (or perhaps even sell to each other). Google should not have too much difficulty turning user generated content into highly targeted ad units in order to facilitate a trend toward social marketing with ROI responsibilities.

As if it is not enough for business owners to focus on social networking strategies and results, mob

As if it is not enough for business owners to focus on social networking strategies and results, mobile marketing is quickly competing for the spotlight.

In April of last year, Google introduced mobile image ads allowing advertisers to send branded messages that appear as they would on your desktop. “The image ads are keyword-targeted, priced on a CPC basis and must link to a mobile web page, according to an article in bizreport.com.” Click here for more.

As with any technology these days, it quickly advances and offers more. This past February, Google expanded its map feature offering real time location information. This could provide unique promotion opportunities for business owners who would communicate to their opt-in audience with timely information on store sales, etc. This could take advertising to a whole new level. Only time will tell.

But, do mobile marketing campaigns work?

Yes they do. But like with any advertising channel, there are a lot of contributing factors that can make a campaign successful. Look at Jiffy Lube in Iowa. In summary, they executed an integrated campaign, and sent out coupons via mobile. It garnered a great initial response, but the coupons were not redeemed on the same scale. It shows there is more to a campaign than just a great idea, it’s also about execution and timing. For more on their results, click here.

“Mobile marketing is so much more than just cell phones.” This is just one of the five things author Eric Bader of BrandInHand wrote that you should consider with mobile marketing. I think the key to this channel is that you can reach your market right at THEIR fingertips with their mini computer in hand. You just need to be targeted and timely with your communication. Click here to read more.

Here’s a list of 10 top mobile campaigns in 2006. I share this from a few years ago to show that mobile marketing is not new and is being used to promote products and services in a variety of ways, from shoes to entertainment. Click here for the supporting details.

So, who should lead the way in exploring the success of this channel?

The answer is anyone who is trying to reach their target audience. This is not new technology, it just continues to advance and more results are becoming known. We don’t need to wait for the big corporations to test the market. They already are. We need to be smart about mobile campaign advertising and its integration into the big picture of our marketing mix.

The integration of barcode scanning for Google Product Search mobile is pure genious! Impulse buying has just gotten a whole lot better…imagine if you could buy products with confidence and know that it has good ratings as well as prices. Well kids, you don’t have to imagine it anymore.

IBM-Forscher Moshe Rappoport
