Your Computer Friends found this article we thought you might be interested in:

Google is gearing up for an all-out assault on the mobile-phone market that will include a new, Google-branded handset and the first comprehensive Google phone service with unlimited free calls.

For the first time, a single company will control everything from the software in users’ phones to the services they use to make calls and surf the web.

The Googlephone promises to be one of the most advanced smartphones, with a large touchscreen display and a processor almost twice as fast as the one powering Apple’s iPhone 3GS. It will probably be the first phone to run a new version of Google’s Android software, codenamed Flan, offering high-speed 3-D gaming said to be as good as that of many handheld consoles.

According to Ashok Kumar, an analyst at Northeast Securities, a financial services firm, the Google-branded phone will be built by a third-party supplier, possibly the Taiwanese phone maker HTC, and will incorporate a processor from Qualcomm.

The real breakthrough, however, will come with the marriage of the Googlephone to Google Voice, the Californian company’s high-tech phone service. Google Voice gives US users a free phone number and allows unlimited free calls to any phone in the country — landline or mobile. International calls start from a couple of cents (just over a penny) a minute. Google Voice also uses sophisticated voice recognition to turn voicemails into emails, can block telemarketing calls automatically and offers free text messaging.

Google sounded its intentions two weeks ago when it purchased a small company called Gizmo5, which had developed technology to connect Google Voice with voice-over-internet (Voip) networks such as Skype. Now Google has the means to offer a complete, end-to-end phone service, with which consumers can make and receive calls between the Googlephone and other phones or computers anywhere in the world, and often for nothing.

“We’ve never had this situation, where a single vendor controls the entire stack, from the operating system right up to Google’s cloud services,” says Kumar. “It changes the competitive and bargaining dynamics like never before.”

Google declined to comment on its plans, however.

One victim of the Google juggernaut could be Skype, the internet phone service. Skype software uses a broadband internet connection to offer free voice and video calls to other Skype users, plus cheap calls to landlines worldwide. If Google can succeed in linking its Google Voice service to Skype and other Voip networks, it can lure users with the offer of free long-distance calling and a “real” phone number.

One of Google’s challenges will be to link the phone to mobile networks so that the company’s services can be offered not just over wi-fi-connected broadband, but also over a 3G link to the internet, resulting in a real call-from-anywhere device.

This could prove a problem, though: few phone networks will appreciate being frozen out of lucrative business such as voice calling and text messaging, and being reduced to a simple data pipeline for Google’s services.

Google could also antagonise the networks by selling its mobile phone directly to customers and inviting them to use their existing Sim cards, whatever network they are on. “Google wants the Googlephone to be carrier-agnostic,” Kumar predicts. This could push the price of the handset to well over £500, because the cost of smartphones is heavily subsidised by networks, which recoup the money by locking customers into their services.

The mobile networks aren’t the only enemies Google risks creating. Other phone makers now using the Android operating system, such as Samsung, Motorola and Sony Ericsson, might not take kindly to Google keeping the most up-to-date version of its software for itself.

Although the popularity of Android has grown quickly since its launch last year, it is still installed on less than 4% of the smartphones sold, and there are other free operating systems (Symbian, for instance) to which rival phone makers could switch.

Can Google have its Flan and eat it? We may not have too long a wait before finding out, because Kumar and other experts are predicting that the Googlephone will be launched in the US early next year.

Hi-ya friends and neighbors on the Net!

Did ya miss me? Last week I was having a “that was the week that was” kind of episode with health issues and a very busy schedule preventing me from writing to you. But that was then, and this is now … and do I have some things to show you this week in this edition of JWL.

Firefox browser users, I have installed a new application called the “YouTube Auto Buffer & Auto HD & Remove Ads” application. It may be a funny name for an application, but I love this app! It’s actually a two part install with the Greasemonkey application installation followed by the script that allows you to watch You Tube videos already set to HD (larger, clearer screens). It keeps those pesky ads from appearing on the video screen while the video is playing, and it loads the video up (aka buffering) and lets you click the button when you’re ready to watch it, instead of the video starting up as soon as the page loads. The link below sends you to the page with instructions and links for the download. Remember, this is for Firefox browsers only from Userscripts.org. http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/49366

As you might know, Google is still churning out new applications for internet users worldwide. Two new things to be watching for … the Google Operating System for PC computers, and next year … the Google Phone. Now, I know someone who is reading this is saying, “wait a minute, there was talk about a phone before and Google said it wasn’t making one”. Matter of fact, they have released the Android operating system for phones like the Droid which was released a couple of weeks ago. But word has gotten out that they are in the process of picking the hardware maker and it’s rumored to be either Toshiba or LG. The Google Operating System for PC’s (known as Chrome OS) will be run on computers like the popular Netbook that are big on memory but without hard drives. The trend, you see, is all about “cloud” computing. That is, connecting to the internet and doing everything online, which is why so many products Google has been turning out is about working online, like Gmail for email, watching videos on You Tube, and the new Wave for interactive projects with coworkers.

OK, so getting onto things that are more immediate, Black Friday, the common term for shopping the day after Thanksgiving, is coming up this week. ( I know! Thanksgiving already.) There is a website for Black Friday shoppers calling themselves the “official site for all of the 2009 Black Friday ads as they are reported to us during this holiday shopping season”. BlackFriday.info has a rather extensive listing of stores with deals for the beginning of holiday shopping. Categories include coupons, black friday ads and online shopping. This is a good bookmark … http://www.blackfriday.info/

Thanksgiving means we have reason to give thanks for the blessings we have. It also means we can give thanks for God’s blessings including the ability to taste good food. Want a place where you can find the real joy of baking? Try visitng JoyofBaking.com where you can find inviting pictures and recipes for such treats as pumpkin cheesecake, red velvet cake, gingerbread men, apple pie, and shortbread cookies. Now all you need to do is get busy! Remember that there are plenty of volunteers (many of them in your own family) who are willing to try a sample of your efforts and tell you how good it is … http://www.joyofbaking.com/

Beth Vorhees of Public TV fame said her daughter, Diana, a third-grader, was to give a demonstration speech at school. She planned to demonstrate how to make “Flies on a Log,” which consists of peanut butter spread on a stalk of celery with raisins on it.
The morning of her speech, Diana took out everything she needed and put it on the kitchen counter, ready to take it to school. Unfortunately, when the girl and her mother left for school, they forgot to take the items.
Diana’s mother dropped her off and went home to get the stuff.
The celery was gone. The raisins were gone. The peanut butter had been put away.
“Oh,” said Diana’s father. “I had that stuff for breakfast.”
Beth rushed to gather up more ingredients and hurry them to school, with an apology to the teacher and an explanation of what happened.
“Gee,” said Diana’s teacher, “that’s a first — ‘My dad ate my homework.’”
(thanks, Joanna)
+++++++++++++++++++++++
“This house,” said the real estate salesman, “has both its good points and its bad points. To show you I’m honest, I’m going to tell you about both.
The disadvantages are that there is a chemical plant one block south and a slaughterhouse a block north.”
“What are the advantages?” inquired the prospective buyer.
“The advantage is that you can always tell which way the wind is blowing.”
(thanks, Reggie)
+++++++++++++++++++++++
A few years back, I had my old 45 RPM records out to look through and my daughter asked what they were. I explained that back in the 1960s, before CDs were invented, this was how we listened to music. I further explained how all the bands issued singles on these “45s,” and radio stations would rate the top 40 songs every week.
She was quite impressed as I continued describing how one used a phonograph to play them. I burst out laughing when she asked — perfectly straight faced — “Daddy, how many megs of RAM does one of these hold?”
(thanks, Jay)
+++++++++++++++++++++++
The Vacation Bible School theme for the day was “God’s All-Star Champions,” so they had sports-related activities. To get in the sports spirit, and since Denver has several professional sports teams, the minister asked “What is the name of the place where the Colorado Avalanche play hockey?”
One of the children answered, “Pepsi Center.”
“And where do the Denver Broncos play?”
“Invesco Field at Mile High.”
“And where do the Colorado Rockies play?”
“Coors Field.”
“And finally, where do the Nuggets play?”
“McDonalds!”
(thanks, Janet)
=======================
As I mentioned earlier in this issue, it’s Thanksgiving and a time to give thanks. I want to thank each of you for reading the weekly WebLetter. And thanks for the jokes folks. Have a great week and a happy Thanksgiving and until next weekend, may God bless you and keep you safe.

The rumors have abounded for a few months now whether Google is making hardware and will be launching a smartphone in the near future; the head geeks at Google are supposedly running around their offices in Mountain View with beta devices attached to their belts.

What’s next? YPhone? MPhone? (that’s Yahoo and Microsoft in case you wondered). There are rumors that a sleek, slick, google-built smartphone will hit after the new year with a big marketing splash in January since they missed the holiday season. Google’s Andy Rubin, head Droid-head, stated they aren’t building hardware and interested in competing with customers, but since most likely a Korean company is doing the manufacturing, google technically isn’t ‘building’ a smartphone. Hmmm….what’s the diff, right?

The other slant on the GPhone rumors, is that it will be a data-only device using VoIP for voice calls and not using the carriers cellular networks. This would allow them to ‘not compete’ with customers….can you say ‘Google Voice?’

Blah Blah Blah…..sounds like a politician being interviewed…..what’s the real story on this and what’s fact and what’s fiction?

This will certainly be a watched topic and with Android coming out in competition against Apple’s iPhone, plus Verizon taking shots at them as well with the ‘iDon’t’ commercials, could Google really be readying a 3rd salvo in the kick Apple where it hurts saga? Sit back, grab some popcorn and let’s see how this sorts out.

But it may be in Google’s interest in moving forward with a device that is VoIP based since it lost the 700MHz auction, because of the infrastructure Google has already in place for such a device.

Google so far has Google Voice (with Voice Mail), Google Nav, Android OS, Gmail and possibly several other apps or items lined up for such a device. Even though Google does not own spectrum, what could preclude Google from buying carrier companies? They do have the money and love from their shareholders to pull off such a move. Or Google can just lease the networks from the carriers (it happens all the time). A source at the WSJ (via TechCrunch) states: Our source says AT&T is already bidding for the business, and may be willing to sell data to Google, with certain conditions, for $20/month. Also, WSJ reported: (their) sources at AT&T have confirmed that they’ll sell data-only plans to customers who bring in BlackBerry and Windows devices, and strip out the voice plan.

Google’s $750 million acquisition of mobile ad network AdMob also puts an interesting twist into the game. “[The AdMob acquisition] is a recognition that mobile actually represents a whole different set of capabilities to an advertiser,” says Mike Wehrs, president and CEO of the Mobile Marketing Association. “It clearly demonstrates the value of the industry.”

Google is circling the wagons while the mobile wireless industry is trying to figure out what Google’s next move will be and where. While the carriers sit back on their laurels and play the guessing game, Google will make an advance in a very unwanted direction; taking very Dominant position with several free and open platforms in which to launch their (next) industry changing service: Google Mobile

Alright seriously Google, now you’re just trying to get a rise out of me right? I just got don

Alright seriously Google, now you’re just trying to get a rise out of me right?

I just got done coming to terms with waiting until mid-December for the HTC Passion release and now you have to go and do something like this. Like the holidays aren’t stressful enough.

Here, in no particular order, is why I’m not going to take this seriously and my decision is going to be made in December based on the Passion versus the Droid.

Google hasn’t said a peep about it and have in fact said quite definitively that such a product would not exist within the last few weeks.

Chances are even if something like this did release in the next few months it would not be on Verizon. (Although if this thing comes out for AT&T I may actually be physically ill as I’m going to have to hear about their having both the iPhone and the gPhone.)

Even if Google is basically dictating everything under the sun on this device, so what? I don’t know what about that would make it any better than what’s coming out of Motorola or HTC.

The alleged partnership is with LG, not that they are bad, but I’ve had LG phones and meh is what think of them creating my high end smartphone.

Honestly I’m just tired of waiting, at some point you have to bite the bullet and make your move and play the cards your dealt and dance with the one that brung’ you and etc….

Alright, I’m the calm center of the universe again and I’m going to go back to trolling for Passion news.

What about the rest of you, are you biting?

Update: TechCrunch is reporting that the phone may be purely data driven using VOIP for voice duty and they are sticking with AT&T or T-Mobile as the carrier. If that actually proves to be true I really will be at peace with the device as AT&T in the middle portion of the country where I live and would leave the gPhone little more than a glorified paperweight anytime I left wifi.

google phone rumors are back with a vengeance, spurred on by reports that the Internet behemoth Goog

google phone rumors are back with a vengeance, spurred on by reports that the Internet behemoth Google is partnering with phone maker HTC on a “super” Android device thinner than the Droid and iPhone. The release date for this Google-branded phone is early 2010, according to TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington who reported a Google Phone was in the works Tuesday.

Rumors of a Google phone are nothing new, although speculation did start to disappear once Android-based phones hit the market last year. But this is the second time a Google phone rumor has popped up in recent weeks, and Arrington’s rumor bear a striking resemblance to what we’ve heard before.

The Real Google Phone
Taking a page out of Apple’s “we control the customer experience” playbook, Google reportedly wants to produce a handset that will be completely dictated by the team in Mountain View. Details about the phone are incredibly thin. There’s no word on what kind of specs the handset would have, but potential manufacturers for the phone, according to Arrington, include LG and Samsung. A major advertising campaign introducing the phone could reportedly start as early as January of next year.
Google will reportedly sell its phone directly to customers as well as through retailers. That suggests the search giant may not have a network partner on board, and would sell unsubsidized phones instead. Phones sold outside of the carrier system means the Google phone could cost as much as $500, and would have to run on a SIM-friendly GSM networks such as AT&T and T-Mobile.
While a carrier-free Google phone would be an unusual move in the age of exclusivity contracts, it’s not unheard of. Handset makers such as RIM and Palm sell unlocked versions of their smartphones through Amazon and other retailers.
The suggestion that the phone will not be tied to a specific carrier, backs up a previous assertion by Northeast Securities analyst Ashok Kumor who made similar claims last month after Google’s “design partners” filled him about the phone, according to the Street.com.

The iPhone is not Beta
A phone experience created and designed exclusively by Google will inevitably draw comparisons with Apple’s iPhone. And, as Arrington points out, for good reason. Just as the iPhone is Apple’s vision of the handset, a Google-branded phone would be a competing vision of what the smartphone should be.
But while dictating the phone experience makes sense for Apple–a company that has a long history in designing polished hardware–Google is not about launching polished products. Can the company that made beta a punchline deliver on a complete customer experience the first time around? Sure, the original iPhone lacked smartphone basics like cut-and-paste, video capability and MMS. But with the exception of video, those are all software issues. The fact is, from a hardware perspective, the original iPhone was a revolutionary and complete product. There’s no question iPhone hardware has improved over time, but that doesn’t take anything away from the original design.
Google, on the other hand, is all about delivering an incomplete product and then fixing and improving it over time. But you can’t do that with a physical product. For smartphones there is no such thing as beta. You either get it right at launch or you don’t. It’s as simple as that.
Another question is how Google’s Android partners will react to a Google phone? As my colleague JR Raphael pointed out last month, Google has worked hard to convince manufacturers to embrace the Android platform. Changing roles from Android facilitator to Android competitor, could hamper those efforts.

[...] Most of our sources have unconfirmed information, which we describe below. But there are a few

[...] Most of our sources have unconfirmed information, which we describe below. But there are a few things we have absolutely confirmed: Google is building their own branded phone that they’ll sell directly and through retailers. They were long planning to have the phone be available by the holidays, but it has now slipped to early 2010. The phone will be produced by a major phone manufacturer but will only have Google branding Microsoft did the same thing with their first Zunes, which were built by Toshiba.

There won’t be any negotiation or compromise over the phone’s design of features – Google is dictating every last piece of it. No splintering of the Android OS that makes some applications unusable. Like the iPhone for Apple, this phone will be Google’s pure vision of what a phone should be.

That’s it for confirmed, super-high confidence information, which frankly isn’t a whole lot more than we all heard back in late October. But we also have a few more details as well that we’ve gathered from a number of sources. Everything that follows we still consider to be just well-sourced rumors:

One source told us that HTC, a Taiwanese company, is building the new Google phone, but we think that information is incorrect. We have some fairly good information that suggests Google is working with a Korean phone manufacturer on the Google phone – LG or Samsung. Samsung has multiple parts in the iPhone and could be pressured by Apple not to work with Google, which says LG is the more likely partner for Google. So rumors like this one may be much more important than they first appear. But either way, the best information we have right now points directly at Korea as the birthplace of the Google Phone.

We’ve also heard from a good source that Google is planning a big advertising push around the device early next year – like January.

That’s all we have for now. We don’t yet know what the device will look like, how big it will be, or even if it has a physical keyboard. But we do know that Google is getting into the phone building business directly, and doesn’t seem too concerned about competing with all the other device manufacturers building Android phones.

via The Google Phone Is Very Real. And It’s Coming Soon.

Just came across a very interesting article on the net that talks about Apple driving developers awa

Just came across a very interesting article on the net that talks about Apple driving developers away from its App Store. Huh!!! Is that possible? After all Apple and it’s iPhone/iPod are supposed to be the best thing that has ever happened to the world. The truth is actually quite different my friends.

At one point the iPhone was probably the best platform for mobile applications. But the situation is quite different now. RIM’s Blackberry, Google’s Android and Palm’s WebOS have all changed the dynamics of the game. Consumers and mobile app developers have a lot of choice now. All the operating systems are quite capable and worthy and some of them are actually easier to develop for. For example if you want to develop for the Android or the Palm Web OS all you need is the SDK and a computer running Windows, Linux or Mac OS. But if you want to develop for the iPhone you need to have an Apple Mac computer. Ridiculous!!! What were they thinking? By constraining the development environment you are already alienating some of the developers.

The thing that takes the cake is Apple’s policies for applications that can be hosted on the App Store. In fact there is a clear lack of a consistent policy and every application, and by extension the developer, is at the mercy of the whims of an Apple employee. So if the Apple person reviewing your application on a particular day had a harrowing time tackling brutal traffic, or just learnt that his/her partner is cheating on him, then you could be doomed. Your application would be rejected for some seemingly vague reasons. And I am not pulling something out of thin air here, this has happened….on multiple occasions….and continues to happen even today. So here’s the million dollar question:

Who the f&*^ is Apple to decide what I can run on my iPhone/iPod ?

In some of my previous posts I had talked about how Apple might be losing developers if it does not get it’s act together. Here are a few of them:

Apple iPhone will lose to Google Android powered T-Mobile G1

22 steps through iPhone development hell

Arrogant Apple good for Google

In fact Apple has started losing developers. Check out this article. Most of the fanboys would be quick to dismiss this as a one off case of disgruntled developers. Probably true now but how long would this take to snowball into something bigger? More importantly can Apple afford to take a hit to their reputation? Google Android and the Web OS have opened up development to all and their store policies are more lenient towards developers. So what does Apple have to gain? The iPhone on Verizon seems to be a distant dream specially with the Motorola Droid faring quite well. Looks like it might pretty much be all downhill from here for the iPhone.

(128MB only, while HTC Magic w/288MB), Galaxy

这时候就会把recovery.img成功刷入机器了！

Enable root (su)

cd tools

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

當提示recovery.img寫入后，就關機

adb shell mount -o remount,rw /sdcard/
adb shell rm /sdcard/rectools//RECTOOLS.tar.gz (only if it’s an update)
adb push RECTOOLS.tar.gz /sdcard/
adb shell sync

Review…

唔知個 OS 既 Priority 點分, 由打電話到 back to home 都好窒… 難得係 Android 同 iPhone OSX 亦係同父異母血統 (前者似係 Linux based, 後者 BSD Unix based), 表現可差甘鬼多.

Anyone else interested in the new Google Android phones? I have been a long time Verizon subscriber and have been waiting for a smart phone ever since the iPhone first came out. I refused to leave Verizon since I have been a very satisfied customer. I almost jumped ship with the announcement of the Palm Pre, but at last I was not convinced it was the phone for me.

Now that Verizon has struck a partnership with Google, they have released two new Google Android phones. Not sure if you all have been following the news (I am a tech geek at heart, what can I say), but today was the official release for the the HTC Droid Eris $99.00, and the Motorola Droid $199.00. Since I have been a long time customer of Verizon I automatically get a $100.00 credit to renew my contract off any phone, so essentially I can get the new Eris for free, except that I would have to pay the taxes. Although the Droid is an overall better phone, and bigger I do personally like the smaller Eris.

Hopefully over the weekend I’ll decide which phone to get. I am mostly undecided because I do like the actual specs on the Droid, but I really do love the UI Sense on the Eris and it’s compact size. I demo both yesterday and to my surprise the Eris felt really good in my hand. Oh well I see what happens.

返到屋企再磨一輪先知, 因為 set 左 “connect as mass storage only” XYZ@#%!@!

WTFIGO????

IP跟AP/hotspot 的設定分開設定.
