With a few minor exceptions, Siri’s vicegrip over voice search in iOS has been largely uncontested.

Google, however, is looking to change that with its new, more advanced Google Search app for iOS. As with Siri, the app allows users to search for information using simple, natural language.

To get irs information, the Google Search digs into Google’s Knowledge Graph, which the company unveiled back in May. With the feature, Google is able to get information on major topics like landmarks, the weather, travel schedules, and movies, and use the info to return relevant answers relatively quickly.

As you can see in the video below, the result is a search experience that should feel very familiar to Siri users. While the app likely doesn’t work quite as rapidly as Google advertises, Google Search and similar efforts represent the future of search and can only get faster from here.

Probably the biggest obstacle for the app, however, is that it’s operating on Siri’s home turf and won’t have the same phone-level functionality as Apple’s own software. And that’s probably never going to change.

Microsoft is slinging mud at Google recently with bitter videos and critical advertisements, but the Internet giant is staying silent and has only thrown one thing at the Windows company: The “Google Search” app.

“Find better results using Google from your Windows Phone. Search the web faster and easier with the latest features: Google Autocomplete, My Location, and Voice Search,” announced the app’s description.

More information is available below.

Google makes sure to feature its Voice Search capability for user’s who prefer to skip the typing. The firm also explained how Search Nearby allows people to find places without typing in their location. The app is available for free on devices with Windows Phone 7.5 or higher. The download size is less than 1MB.

Remember folks: Windows users are employing this app, so ratings might be biased. The Google Search app currently has a 2-star rating (out of 5) with nearly a dozen reviews on the Windows Phone marketplace.

Google Search App is the new name for the previous Google Mobile app. This app may seem like a no-b

Google Search App is the new name for the previous Google Mobile app. This app may seem like a no-brainer for some, “Doesn’t everybody have Google Search on their phones” but surprisingly many don’t and just use a Google bookmark in Safari or Safari itself as their default method of searching.

If you’re lucky enough to have an iPhone 4S then Siri is going to be your go to search app for everything, however Siri is not available for previous generation iPhone users so for the millions of iPhone 4, 3 and 3GS users Google Search will give you Siri like Voice Search capabilities which are remarkably good.

Google Search is similar to your Google desktop and is available for iPhone, iPad as well as other mobile devices. The layout of the app is slightly different for iPad due to the extra screen space but the features are essentially the same.

Google Search is well laid out, intuitive and easy to use. Voice Search does not load automatically, (although it should) so at first glance Google Search looks like any other mobile search engine app. A closer look at the home screen will reveal a microphone and camera icon just to the right of the search information field. Clicking on the camera icon allows you to take a picture of something or location and do a photographic search while selecting the microphone icon launches VOICE SEARCH and a microphone screen appears with the instructions Speak Now.

Google voice search works well with one or two word searches but has problems with longer search requests. Unlike Siri which you can literally talk to, Google Search voice becomes confused when you start asking it questions or conducting searches using more than one or two words. For better results with longer sentences talk slowly and enunciate clearly.

Google voice search is – English only, so if english is a second language or you have a heavy accent Google Search like most voice recognition programs will have a hard time.

Overall Google Search is great mobile search engine and with Voice Search should be considered a Must Have App for any mobile device.

If you ask someone a question these days, it’s very likely that if they don’t know the answer they will say, “I don’t know… Google it”. Yes, we have all grown quite accustomed to ‘Googling’ things that we want to learn about. Well now we can throw a search app by Google into the mix!

Google search app that may help you stay on top of your game…

Google Search. Search the web, as well as your phone, with the Google Search mobile app. It features search by voice, search by picture with Google Goggles, search a history of your queries, email search, contacts search, vertical multi-search, and Google Suggest to aid your search. It also contains links to other Google apps, such as Maps and Gmail.

Google Goggles. Google Goggles searches for an image and lists relevant results. Snap a picture from your smartphone and search for information. Identify barcodes, products, storefronts, business cards, print ads and more.

Voice Search. Speak your search queries instead of typing. Voice Search is a feature of the Google Search app for iPhone and BlackBerry. For Android, Voice Search is a separate app that also supports Voice Actions, which allows you to speak instead of type in any app where you launch a keyboard.

Google SMS. Search by text message. Send a search query by SMS to 9-77-33-00000 and receive results back by SMS immediately.

The Google search app makes searching even easier! To learn more about this useful tool visit: http://www.practicalecommerce.com/articles/2883-22-Google-Mobile-Apps-for-Business.
