Click a Button, Translate an Entire Google Site

One of our favorite Google tools, Google Translate, not only talks and translates in real-time, but it’s been integrated in a wide variety of Google services, including Google Reader, Gmail, and most recently, Google Toolbar.

Now Google has announced that it has integrated Translate with yet another one of Google’s (Google) many products. This time, it’s Google Sites, a tool for creating simple but useful web pages. All of the pages within Sites can be translated just by clicking a floating “translate” button on the bottom right of the page.

Did a bit of research on mashup couple of months ago and would like to share a short write up about it.

The term mashup originated from composing songs or musics. Wikipedia defines it as “a song or composition created by blending two or more songs, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the music track of another”

The mashup I will be talking about here is about IT applications and Wikipedia defines it as “a web page or application that combines data or functionality from two or more external sources to create a new service”. The data or functionality are typically from other sites and accessible via APIs, XML feeds, screen-scraping, mashup server, etc. The diagram below should help to illustrate the definition.

For a long time we have seen web portal, starting with Yahoo! and spreading to enterprise portal. So, how is mashup different from portal? Mashup itself can be implemented at any of the 3 layers, namely

• Presentation
• Business Logic
• Data

Mashup Technology Domain

Mashup at presentation layer is the most common one we’ve seen. Many sites combining Google Maps and own data to provide new services. Those services will then rendered as gadget (Google and Open Social Standard), widget (IBM term), Badges (Yahoo! term).

Mashup at logic/process layer and data layer typically done with the help of mashup server or application server. The definition of mashup at business logic layer is a little unclear to me because it looks like any server-side integration (using application server or service bus).

Data mashup can be implemented at client and server-side. Like business logic, server-side data mashup require mashup server or application server. While client-side can be implemented using on-demand Javscript.

Each of the components from the “smallest”, such as APIs, XML feeds can be assembled to create a new service or application by using a mashup platform or on-demand JavaScript. The diagram below sh0ws how each component connected.

Google Sites is a free do-it-yourself website and Wiki creation service that offers another level of ease, namely, real-time changes to your site. Formerly known as Job Spot, it’s free to host and incorporates these page templates as key features:

1. Rich text editor for web pages
2. Announcements, i.e. quick news and RSS
3. File Cabinet for publicly viewable folders
4. Lists for adding action items, i.e. single table databases

GS also integrates nicely with Google Docs like Adsense, MAP, Picasa Photo, Spreadsheets, Video Presentation, Calendar, Document, Picasa Web Slideshow and can be spruced up with Gadgets (similar to Widgets).

Creating content for your website is key, so here’s how it works:

1. Create an account at Sites.Google.com
2. View other templates
3. Create a template for your gallery
4. Name the site and give it a theme
5. Create and name your site
6. Determine the site layout (tip: navigation equals menus links)
7. Insert the aforementioned Google Docs as content

There’s this “devil’s advocate” side of me that is rejecting out of my paw my intent to move my résumé to Google Docs. It claims that I am not thinking off the end of my nose.

Am I forgetting that job hunting is a dirty game, and that victory goes to the candidate who is fastest at getting his/her qualifications into the brain of the HR manager?

Let me recap. I have fifteen seconds from the moment my résumé hits their hot little hands to tell the HR manager what I can do for their company. Is it wise to waste five to ten of those precious seconds showing them a hyperlink and telling them to click it?

The Google Docs idea still feels good, and I still need to give it its day in my court. So what I’m most certainly going to do is get more practice with Google Docs. Not just the actual writing of WP docs and spreadsheets and slide presentations, but actually inviting other people to doctor them up with me. I need some lab partners from elsewhere in the Lower 48.

My immediate plans

I’m already doing my emergency number-crunching. I figure I’m already sitting on enough money to pay my December rent, and the last two paychecks should easily take care of the of the credit cards, utilities, and payment and insurance for Ooo Shinee. December is good, but I’m already thinking about January.

Question is, in light of how ProTeam Staffing could conceivably have a new work assignment waiting for me next Monday, how fast should I get on the horn to the unemployment folks? I probably should do it tomorrow to get the benefits going for the latter half of December.

Quick word…

They’re already starting to thin the herd here at the Ohio Department of Health. My job assignment is scheduled to end after tomorrow. I’ll write some more about what I’m thinking of this new development tomorrow. Since tonight’s post is already mostly written, let me present it…

Have you ever puttered around with Google Docs? Google Docs is kind of like a watered-down Microsoft Office that resides on the Internet as opposed to your own home computer. All the apps and all your documents are stored on the Internet, a.k.a. the “cloud”. There’s no need for carrying around a flash memory stick and risking its theft or misplacement. Best of all, you can invite other people from all over the planet to come in and collaborate on these documents with you.

This is probably the only kind of cloud computing that I can readily understand. And trust me, I need to know about cloud computing because it’s going to be the next big buzzword to spring on the next HR manager I talk to. It may not put me on their IT staff, but it should show that I have more vision for their company than most people.

Google Docs and the next job hunt

This is how I intend to conduct my next job hunt:

1. Move my résumé to Google Docs.
2. Send invites to potential HR managers to view my résumé there.

My cover letter is going to say that I’m a big believer in using tomorrow’s office technology today. I will stress that I am making the effort to understand the concept of cloud computing and how it can benefit the office of today, and toward that end, I’m going to conduct the distribution of my résumé the cloud computing way.

Future computing

I see the computing public eventually going to using thin clients, little relatively dumb terminals about the size of a book that do nothing but web browsing, because really, that’s all a user-side computer needs to be able to do anymore (that and kick documents out through a cheap inkjet printer). Now that there are such online suites of office software as Microsoft Sharepoint, Google Apps, and Google Docs, these can totally replace Microsoft Office and OpenOffice. Even the poorest families should be able to buy and use a thin client and do homework for school using Google Docs.

Web designers have become slightly nervous over Google’s swelling templates for Google Sites. They are very professional, clean and just slightly pretty which can easily be created by users using a simple step-by-step guide. Just have a gander at the screenshots below:

Although very pretty, these websites do not cater for the needs of an estate agent that is serious about their estate agent website. Firstly let’s take the design. The designs above may be bright and colourful, but they may not necessarily be the right image for your brand. Matching your website design to your branding is very important as new customers that find you online will instantly judge your company on design of its website.

Have a look at the image below, or for greater detail, visit the Julian Reid website. The website is clean and gives off an image of professionalism with a hint of the types of properties that they cater for.

Secondly these templates do not support the types of functionality that every estate agent should demand to have on their website. Estate agents need the whole range of features that are all bedded into their website design. One clear favourite is enhanced Google maps. The image below shows all the properties from a search on Google Maps alongside various local amenities such as schools, doctors, dentists, transport, restaurants etc.

The next feature has become more than a prerequisite. High resolution pictures are easily accessible these days but the way estate agent websites display them can make it difficult for the user.

One way is to display all the high res photos in a pop-up. This directs the user’s attention away from the website while modern pop-up blockers can confuse and block users from viewing the photographs.

Another way is to embed photos directly onto the website, which can make the photos grainy and small. Due to website size restrictions, this can impair the ability for users to fully view available photographs otherwise users will find themselves scrolling endlessly down the page.

Instead Resource Techniques uses the latest viewer technology that is used by large companies such as the BBC and Sony. When users click on a picture, they are presented with a ‘viewer’ with a high resolution photograph that overlaps the website. From here they can flick between photographs without being directed away from the website. All the user has to do is click away from the viewer or the ‘x close’ button and they return back to the property that they were originally inspecting.

The viewer can cater for more than just photographs. Estate agents are able to display floorplans, EPCs, HIPS, and print-friendly property particulars that are completely editable by the estate agent.

Google Sites Just Got a Whole Lot Prettier

Google (Google) has created a template gallery for Sites; when you create a new site, you can now select a template which you can further customize according to your needs. Available templates cover a wide selection of specific needs; you’ll find one for schools, weddings, churches, families, clubs, restaurants, projects and more.

Furthermore, the template gallery is public, and anyone can contribute. Given Google’s popularity, and the fact that Google Sites is a free service, we expect the gallery to be populated with dozens of great looking templates soon. Google Sites, which launched a little under two years ago, have given businesses and consumers a way to quickly build their own websites with no HTML knowledge required, making it relatively easy for anyone without a technical background to build a simple website. Now, Google is making it infinitely easier for anyone to create sleek, attractive websites with new feature Templates.

For those that aren’t familiar with this product, Sites is the reincarnation of Jotspot, which Google acquired back in 2006 (though the two products look totally different). The product is Google’s easy-to-use website and wiki builder that’s widely used by businesses, though there’s a consumer option available.

Google Sites now has a fully stocked gallery of public templates that can be used by both consumers and businesses. Google has also created templates that are targeted for business use. Templates let you quickly start a new site with pre-built content, embedded gadgets, page payouts, navigation links, theming and more. And Businesses using Google Apps will also have a private area where employees can share proprietary site templates, which can be made via Sites’ recently launched API, with coworkers. This is actually useful to organizations, such as the Boy Scouts of America, which wants to share templates for chapters over the nation to launch as their platform.

Sites will be free for all Google Apps customers (both paid and free) as well as for consumers. While Sites’ templates can be easily used for collaborative workspaces like employee intranets, project tracking sites, team sites and employee profile pages.

Though templates isn’t a monumental additions to Google Sites, it is a complimentary, easy-to-use and free feature that’s included in Google Apps. The tie-in between the two only reinforces the strategy Google has of continuing to make Google Apps more appealing to businesses to perhaps take a significant bite out of Microsoft’s market share.

Chicago Web Site Design Company

Three academic years, three different tools and finally a web content creation tool that paralegals can use to make an online portfolio.

First, there was Weebly– extremely easy to use with it’s drag and drop formatting. The wide variety of themes appealed to the paralegal students (especially when compared with PBwiki 1.0– the other option I gave them at the time). I thought Weebly was a winner, but after two semesters of glitches, site crashes and page freezings I knew that Weebly was too wobbly to do the job. Students would get frustrated with the slow uploads and frequent page-stalls and I’d run around during our workshops reloading pages, switching browsers and breaking a sweat. I’m sure part of the problem was the lousy bandwidth in the Library combined with the laptop computer processors, but this was the first (and often the last) exposure to this tool that the students had and if I lost them in the first 20 minutes, the whole process was a waste.

Last year, after a lot of asking around, I decided to give WordPress a go. With a little manipulation, the blogging tool could easily become a collection of static web pages– perfect for an online portfolio. If I steered the students toward the single column templates, the site would barely look like a blog at all and the custom-header option was still available.

My over-familiarity with WordPress obviously made me over-estimate the ease with which this could all be done. WordPress, even the free web-version, is a powerful tool with a lot of management options. Although any student who has ever blogged or set up a Facebook page could probably figure out how to create a portfolio using WordPress, I didn’t find many of these students in the paralegal classes. The classes are never more than 9 students, but out of those 9 the range of computer-comfort goes from digital native to digital Dorothy-just-landed-in-Oz.

Where students working with Weebly became frustrated, WordPress students got angry. There were too many buttons, too many options, too many steps. The steps, even when spelled out, were not intuitive and the process overly complicated. After the first session, I created a guide to creating a portfolio using WordPress that went through every possible action they might want to take– adding pages, editing pages, moving pages, uploading documents, inserting photos, managing privacy. But it was all too much.

I tried WordPress one more semester, using the Step by Step guide during the hands-on workshop, but the students were overwhelmed and seemed to simultaneously despair in the face of all the options and rage at the limitations. While they wondered why they would ever upload music or install surveys or solicit comments on their site, they couldn’t understand why the formatting tools were so limited. They couldn’t get their resumes to look the way they did in Word, WordPress seemed to dictate the layout of the page, there were not font options. So long, WordPress.

Today we tried Google Sites. I had used Sites for the Step by Step guide to WordPress and for teaching my Facebook workshop and wondered why it wouldn’t work for online portfolios. I was certain there was a good reason– all my other options had some obvious flaw or a significant weakness or foible that made itself evident once I got it in front of the students.  Google Sites had the advantage of already being what I wanted it to be (a website creation tool, unlike WordPress) and I had been using it, with success, for a couple years now.

Google Sites worked fairly well for paralegal students creating an online portfolio.  Over half of the students were able to jump right in and had either no questions for me at all, or had questions about advanced features.  Initial sticking points for some students included Google’s new account creation process (Google’s a little too subtle in telling you that your URL is already being used or that your password is too short.  Also, I absolutely hate Google’s Captcha tests.  I wish they would use reCAPTCHA like everyone else).

A couple students also had problems after creating their accounts– when they tried to get back to http://sites.google.com, they would get a Forbidden error.  Each of these students was using IE, and when I switched them over to Firefox, the problem was solved.  I’m not sure what the issue was, but it was the kind of hang-up that has plagued this project since the beginning– getting started with these tools is not difficult but various roadblocks make it seem so, especially to those students who are technology resistant.

Overall, however, Google Sites was a success.  It’s reliable, it never froze or failed to update changes.  Themes are many and varied and it does a remarkably good job at maintaining the look of formatted text pasted into its pages.  It even neatly solves the inevitable security/privacy concerns by allowing users to restrict access to those viewers they invite.

At the end of the session, students wanted to know when my office hours were, suggesting that they assumed they’d have questions for me.  I hope they’ll make use of the latest Step by Step guide I created, though few seemed to turn to it in class.  Next month, I meet with them again to help them insert their photos and with luck, some of them will have continued to work with their Sites.  I hope Google Sites continues to prove itself to be the tool for the paralegal students’ online portfolio.  I’m quite tired of trying something new every year.

OffiSync, the Microsoft Office plugin that allows users to sync their documents easily with Google Docs, has launched a new release today that will make it even more appealing to businesses: support for Google Sites. Google Sites is the search giant’s answer to Microsoft SharePoint, so this will give business users an alternative solution they can use to manage their documents in a shared workspace. Today’s release also marks the launch of OffiSync’s first premium offering.

Решил написать пост о двух сайтах, которые я закончил и сдал не так уж давно, и о текущей работе – сайтах на движке Google Sites.

1. RADAST.COM

Сайт для одной из моих любимых исполнительниц – Рады Покаржевской.

Небольшой промо-сайт на WordPress. Я сделал новый дизайн и немного помог с движком.

Не могу сказать, что я в восторге от верстки для WordPress, но, если говорить об удобстве для пользователя и администратора – то, да, WP – это неплохой выбор.

2. Beachvolley.org.ua

Это сайт  для днепропетровского волейбольного клуба. Летом я сделал логотип для этого клуба, а осенью пришло время и для сайта.

Что касается программной части, то сайт сделан “из кусков” –  я пообещал себе, что это будет последний сайт, который я делаю с использованием CuteNews. В принципе, это значительно облегчает вёрстку и вообще настройку сайта – он заработал сразу после того, как я залил его по FTP из работающей версии на моей локальной машине. Никаких баз данных MySQL или других вещей, которые требует дополнительной настройки. Это удобно, но только для небольших сайтов-визиток, для более крупных проектов я планирую использовать другие скрипты – вероятно, с открытым кодом.

Текущая работа

Сейчас я занимаюсь сайтом студенческого турклуба “Скіфи“, в котором и сам состою.

Сайт сейчас работает на Google Sites, и я нахожу этот движок отличным для такого рода задач.

Дизайн ещё не готов, и я решил уделить время структуре и наполнению, чем я обычно не занимаюсь.

Если Вы ещё не пользовались Google Sites, но есть задачи, для которых неплохо было бы “смастерить сайт по-быстрому”  ;), то рекомендую этот движок.

Во-первых, он обладает отличным интерфейсом редактирования, который позволяет вставлять на любые страницы помимо обычных веб-элементов, панели навигации по текущей странице и подстраницам, собственные рисунки, формулы, удоные комментарии и многое другое.

Во-вторых, на страницы можно вставлять элементы документов из Google Docs. Это очень удобно, если в редактировании сайта участвуют несколько человек, и к тому же, используются общие документы.

В-третьих, Google предлагает множество готовых виджетов, например, обратный отсчёт до нужной даты, калькуляторы, расчёт дня Пасхи на тридцать лет вперёд ))) и т.д. На самом деле, попробуйте! Наверняка там есть что-то полезное для Вас.

В-четвертых, удобное структурирование – все страницы соединяются в автоматические карты, что облегчает навигацию.

В общем, всё это к тому, что если  Вам нужен сайт для Вашего (тур)клуба, воспользуйтесь Google

Естественно, красивый дизайн для Вашего сайта клуба могу сделать я.

1) Coordinador:

• Revisa el planteamiento del proyecto con el profesor y traslada al grupo los comentarios y la nota.
• Elabora el calendario de trabajo del grupo detallando las tareas y sus fechas de finalización.
• Revisa la primera versión de la ficha de planteamiento | Project form y la actualiza en el blog. Para ello, deberá coordinarse con el resto de compañeros y recopilar los materiales escritos por ellos en el blog.

2) Área técnica y artística:

Se prueban las distintas plataformas sugeridas: Google Sites, Jimdo, WordPress, Weebly y Wix.  En la ficha de planteamiento debe indicarse la URL de cada prueba. En el blog debe escribirse un post con las características de la plataforma elegida y debe explicarse por qué se ajusta al tipo de proyecto en marcha.

3) Área de redacción:

3.1) Se localizan 10 webs de contenido similar al proyecto y se escribe un post comentando las cuestiones relevantes de cada una de ellas para tenerlas en cuenta en el proyecto.

3.2.) Se elabora una lista exhaustiva de fuentes de dónde puede obtenerse información y se publica en un post con los comentarios pertinentes.

4) Área artística:

Se localizan objetos multimedia con el tipo de licencia que permita usarlos (Creative Commons licenses).  Abrir cuentas en Flickr y YouTube para ir almacenando allí los objetos encontrados. Escribir un post indicando las URLs y comentando a los compañeros los materiales que se van seleccionando y para que pueden emplearse. No debe olvidarse apuntar la autoría de cada imagen ya que ese dato deberá estar en el proyecto.

I recently discovered that Google has a free web hosting service called Google Sites. The Bangkok Frugal Photographer likes free, so I built a simple site at http://sites.google.com/site/thebkkphotographer/.

I don’t know what exactly I am going to do with it. My urge to communicate is well satisfied with this blog.

When I tried to register a site name Google Sites told me that the name “bkkphotographer” was not available.  That is why I prepended “the”. However there isn’t a site with that name.

Any suggestions for how I can use my tiny piece of web real estate?

I didn’t know until yesterday that Google had Sites, which are basically wikis.
