O Google atualizou seu serviço de tradução Google Translate e incorporou três novos recursos. Um deles permite que o Google Translate faça traduções em tempo real enquanto o usuário digita e outro apresenta a forma romanizada da palavra caso ela esteja em idiomas como o japonês.

Outro destaque é que palavras traduzidas para o inglês podem ser ouvidas se o usuário clicar no ícone ao lado da palavra, como podemos ver na imagem abaixo:

TechCrucnch post Google Translation Tool Kit: Translation Meets Crowdsourching highlights an interesting and potentially useful new Google release:

“Only a handful of blogs picked up on Google’s fresh Translator Toolkit, which the company launched yesterday by means of a blog post, but this new service really deserves a second look, if only because Wikimedia apparently sees the tool as something that could “change the way Wikipedia grows in other languages”.

You can read an extensive review of the product over at Google Blogoscoped, but here’s the gist:

Google Translator Kit enables anyone to upload documents for a variety of formats (HTML, Microsoft Word, Rich Text, OpenDocument Text and Plain Text), enter the URL for a file on the web or input a direct link to a Wikipedia article or Knol entry. After submission, the text that requires translation is automatically translated in the back-end and subsequently featured in a so-called ‘Workbench’, neatly placing the resulting text in the target language next to the original…

Google will search their translation memory for previous, human translations of the uploaded segment and show the translations in the Search Results tab. Color-coded segments will depict ‘exact’ matches and ‘partial’ matches, so you can edit the text based on the memory as well as previous, human translations. In addition, you can use the computer-generated translation in the Computer Translation tab to jump-start the translation of your current segment…

Many people are using google translator to transalate my pages (on my other blogs). All compound sentences are being translated like trash. 

So I will try to use simple sentences only in the future to the extent of my ability. And write “machine readable english!”

Now Internet Explorer has come out with an experimental version of Google Toolbar for china. This is one of the most favorite features of Google that allows the toolbar to translate web pages that use AJAX extensively and even web sites that require SSL. The following image shows how Google Toolbar managed to translate all the text from Gmail, a web application that uses JavaScript to display the text messages.

Moreover, you can have translation from English to French for Google Docs. As you see in the picture, Google Toolbar translated the navigation bar, the sidebar, the list of documents and contextual menu. Google Toolbar can detect the changes and translates the new message in real time once you use the interface and select an option.

When you use this feature for Google Reader, the toolbar will translate all the posts as soon as they are loaded. Another interesting feature from the new experimental version of Google Toolbar is a sidebar for Google Bookmarks that brings many of the features that are already available in GMarks, a popular Firefox extension.

J’ai ajouté un lien à la marge de Palabre pour traduire automatiquement ce site de web en français. La traduction n’est pas toujours juste, mais cela peut aider au moins d’avoir une notion du sens de chaque article. Il faut commencer à la première page et naviguer de nouveau à l’article que vous lisiez.

I’ve added a link on the side of Palabre which will create an automatic translation of the website into English from French. The translation is not always correct, but at least it will help give a notion of the meaning of each article. You have to start at the first page and then navigate back to the page you were reading.

A few posts on this blog attracted many visitors who commented in a language other than English. In the very beginning I used to get it translated using Google Translate. Most of the time it was not obvious to me that which language the comment was written in, and thus to get the text translated I would resort to randomly pick ‘from’ language and with a few trial and error could get the comment text translated. Then after I had prepared my reply to the comment in English would get it translated to the language the original comment was written in. It was fun but took a lot of time and eventually this practice stopped.

After a long time I made a visit to Google Translate and found a surprise waiting for me. Google has since then included a detect language option too. So you no longer have to go for trial and error, but just let Google do it for you as there is a ‘Detect Language’ option available.

To test I checked for more comments in foreign language and got it translated using ‘Detect Language’ and as visible below it Google detected it to be Russian language and translated it. It may not seem to be a big deal as the characters used here are from Russian unicode sub-range, but if you check it with other languages which are written using Roman script then also Google detects the language very well.

By the way, now that I have read the translated comment above, I know that whatever was written has no relevance to my post on which it was commented, and that its just a comment spam. Seems that there is a lobby out there which is spamming in Foreign languages to avoid getting detected for spam.

In all, Google Translate can not only help you read text written in foreign language, but can also help you to recognize comment span (if you own a blog). So if you have not made a visit to it for long time, do it now.

I called Angelo tonight to see how my wonderful horse, Now Voyager, fared today. Most excellent news – he remains sound! Now Voyager, not Angelo. Well, I guess Angelo is sound but then he was never lame. Excuse me while I pull myself back from the brink of a rabbit hole…

Anyway. Angelo was reporting on what a good boy Now Voyager was – how he let him put the bridle on with no fuss. How he walked, trotted and cantered like the beautiful strong SOUND thoroughbred he is. Then Angelo proceeded to say a bunch of stuff that didn’t sound good and he used the word kaput a lot.

Oh dear. Angelo and I use the word kaput when we’re at the barn and it means broken. Just breathe Kathleen. “Is Now Voyager ok,” I nearly shout into the phone. “Yes, of course,” says Angelo. Then what the heck is all the kaputing about?

Long story short and much emailing back and forth and using Google translation I get the gist that the golf cart came by, scared my big brave horse to death and he pulled back snapping the cross-tie clips. Angelo soothed the beast by feeding him LOTS of treats and all is well. Whew.

To celebrate the happy ending of this portion of my post I shall share with you a photo of me with my big brave horse who is most brave when I’m standing between him and the thing that could possibly eat him (even a small golf cart).

Angelo and I were so thrilled at our new ability to communicate that I decided to tackle another subject. “Hey Angelo, Paula mentioned that your dad makes chocolate,” I say. “What???” Angelo responds in a voice filled with doubt. “My father is a Baggerfahrer,” he says with authority. “What???” I ask. “I have no idea what you’re saying.” We both laugh about this for a while.

“He makes sweets,” Angelo says. Actually, what Angelo SAID was “he makes streets” but I had chocolate on the brain (ah sweet Belgium chocolate). We went back and forth like this for a while. Angelo: “he takes old sweets and turns them into new sweets.” Me: “That’s kind of strange, why would anyone want old sweets.” (Sorry, I need to take a moment to catch my breath I’m laughing so hard. Very Laurel and Hardy, Who’s on First moment.)

Finally Angelo used Google Translator to reveal that a Baggerfahrer is an Excavator Driver. And his father does, indeed, make STREETS. Thank goodness for Google.

-What is “Zemanta”?

Zemanta is a tiny Firefox plugin that works for almost any type of blog, automatically generating tags, links and images with a certain Semantic relevance to your blog-posts (every time you save them).

Zemanta works for WordPress, blogspot, and other types of blogs.

Unfortunately, Zemanta only works for English posts, at the moment. However, as a registered tester of Zemanta’s API, I wrote a message in the Zemanta developer’s forum, with some ideas about using Zemanta in other languages. Here is how:

Zemanta’s results will be in English, but a part of them is useful (in other languages) anyway: E.g. Images. Also tags and categories are BEST done in English, since today there is fusion of information all over the planet and ever-improving quality in automatic translation. So a blogger writing about issues that concern the whole world, should use international (English) tags and categories, to be searchable by international audiences. The only negative thing (but not totally) is that links to other blog-posts (generated by Zemanta) will also be in English, but these are not totally rejectable: Maybe some of them are also relevant and desirable (I certainly use a lot of them, even in Greek posts).

There is a simple way for any non-English blogger to use Zemanta already, even without foreign language extensions, while writing NON-English posts. Here is the procedure:

1. Write your non-English post as a “private post”, keeping Zemanta switched OFF. Do NOT put a title to it yet. Save it.
2. Copy this (entire) text to Google’s automatic translation service, e.g. using my own site http://omadeon.com/tran, which also includees babelfish / Yahoo automatic translation:
3. Translate automatically your (non-Engllish) text into English. Then, copy-and-paste the translation to a NEW BLOG POST, intended as a final (public) post in your blog.
4. Switch ON Zemanta, to get semantic information attached to your post.
5. Switch OFF Zemanta, delete your text (taking care not to delete LINKS if you do need them). Go back now to your original (non-English) private blog-post, copy-and-paste it into the new post (the one you are about to publish). Adjust the title of this post and press “Publish”.
6. VOILA: -You have used Zemanta successfully, in a Non-English post!

In (5) one further possibility is to hand-edit the English automatic translation, to publish your post a second time, this time also in English. The drawback here is that -usually- the translations are of bad quality, a kind of “pigeon-English”; quite often so bad that you have to re-translate your text from scratch! However, the quality is already improving and some types of text get better translated than others (automatically).

• NOTE: If you are a software developer, it is possible to use clever and simple programming calls to Google’s new “translation API” to translate (almost any) blog-post into English temporarily generating semantic results from Zemanta. Clever use of Google’s Translation API by the Zemanta developer(s) can certainly make it work automatically in other languages, making my… wise advice (here) obsolete!
