G. S. Gokhale had painstakingly compiled several volumes of interesting facts about the world, three or four decades ago. The books were called “ज्ञान सागरातले शिंपले” — “seashells from the ocean of knowledge”. Now we have the internet – a wonderful ocean of knowledge (among other things), piped straight to your home or office, and full of all kinds of fascinating stuff!

But the internet can be “read” not just by typing words in Google search. A new way of studying the people of the world has become available.
It is called Google Trends . It tells you which peoples have been searching on given keywords. It can become a very interesting sport, Although I doubt one can do serious analysis with this tool. So to rhyme with Numerology, I call it Trendology : the art of reading Google Trends.

When you type in one or more words on Google Trends, it gives you a “top ten” list of which countries are most active with those words on Google search (it also gives a top ten list for cities, but we will ignore that). A horizontal bar gives relative weight of search volume per country. The site also gives a chart of search volume with time since 2004.

Here are some examples.

Favorite Religious Figure

Mohammed is most popular in Morocco and UAE, Mohamed in Morocco and Tunisia, Christ in Philippines and USA, Buddha in Singapore and Indonesia.

War and Peace

Canadians and Filipinos are searching the most for peace, while Australians and USA are looking at war.

Science and Mathematics

Something funny here. Philippines and India lead on searches for science, genetics, biology, and chemistry. But Pakistan is first on physics and nuclear physics (But South Korea and India lead on semiconductor physics). India leads on Engineering, followed by Pakistan. Similarly, Nigeria and Pakistan lead on searches on mathematics (though followed by Philippines and then India). To make things even more confusing, Philippines and Pakistan lead on thermodyanamics and heat engines.

stock markets

Dow jones is watched in singapore, USA, Australia — note that USA is not no.1. However, Nasdaq is popular in India, Singapore and Israel — USA is lowly no. 5. Nikkei is popular in Japan, singapore and hong kong.
Seems like lot of dabblers in global stock markets live in singapore, and the number is really high when seen as a fraction of the country’s population.

Music

Michael Jackson is hot in Indonesia, Venezuela, Mexico, Colombia, Peru — USA is at No. 10. On the other hand Beethoven is most searched from Chile, Austria, Mexico, Viet Nam — USA is nowhere in the list.

Atom bomb, terrorism, Kashmir

Pakistan is doing the most searches on each of these terms separately, with India a distant second. Frightening, isn’t it?

Refs: Wikipedia has an entry on Google Trends, of course.

In my last post I mentioned a book I recently finished reading by digital marketing expert Mitch Joe

In my last post I mentioned a book I recently finished reading by digital marketing expert Mitch Joel titled, “Six Pixels of Separation: Everyone Is Connected. Connect Your Business to Everyone.”

This fantastic book integrates digital marketing, social media, personal branding and entrepreneurship in a very clear and easy to understand way. A great read! Below is a list of 15 main points from the book that stood out to me. It was tough to choose which main points to include in my list so if you’ve read the book and think I missed one feel free to add to the list or submit your own list. I’d love to hear what other people took away from this great book.

15 Key highlights from “Six Pixels of Separation”

1. Trust + Community = ROI
ROI is now driven by how loyal and engaged your consumers are, especially when using online channels.

2. No one is “using” anymore. Everyone is creating.
There is no such thing as a “user” anymore. No one is “using” anything anymore. They are creating. You are creating. It’s all about creating. Ex.) Facebook: Everyone creates their own experience through the many profile apps Facebook offers. Add your own pictures, create events, build pages, create groups, update your status, send people messages, online chat etc. They’re all centered around the idea of letting people create their own Facebook experience.

3. Embrace the “conversation”
Everyone is talking about starting, joining, or being a “conversation” in order to grow your business. New online media platforms such as blogs and Twitter all embrace the idea of conversation. Before choosing to use online channels you must embrace the conversation.

4. Human nature is about community.
It’s human nature to want to be part of a community. Online channels offer another community for people to participate and connect in. Start your own community and embrace your members.

5. What are people saying about you and your company?
6 free online tools to help you find out:
1. RSS readers (Google reader)
2. News Alerts (Google alerts)
3. Watchlists (Technorati)
4. Google blog search
5. Search Engines
6. Google trends and Facebook Lexicon

6. Online communities = brand building power
You can’t have a strong business without a strong community so harness the power of online communities to build your business. NOW is the time to harness the power that lies in online communities!

7. Think ripples, not splashes.
Traditional advertising campaigns = big splash in a pool of water.
Splashes do work (when done right) but only for a limited time.
Using less energy you can throw small pebble (your idea) into the pool and let the ripple effect take hold. Ripples = powerful WOM conversations generated when you share your content online. In the digital world it’s a lot easier and less expensive to create a ripple than a splash.

8. “Great brands provoke people”
Don’t worry about controlling your brand. Focus on creating a great brand with a great message that resonates with consumers. Concentrate on connecting to your consumers and creating engaging brand experiences.

9. Make personal branding PERSONAL in a digital world
Online channels are used to connect, share, and grow and are a great way to build your personal brand. They can help you establish yourself and your company as a recognized industry authority. Online channels used towards building a global audience are creating new business models and new marketing campaigns that are targeted and relevant, and deliver tremendous ROI.

10. Quality NOT quantity
Attention does not equal trust. Trust is gained through good content, engaging participation on your part, and how you engage with your community. Be helpful. Be sincere. The long-term game of sustainability in the online channels is one of quality versus quantity.

11. Online credibility is EVERYTHING.
Very few brands are embracing the idea of creating credibility through the use of digital channels. Most look for quick fixes. (i.e. banner ads, 3rd party email lists, add anyone to Facebook, Twitter etc.) Ask your consumers for their thoughts, ideas and comments and then be proactive with their feedback in order to gain credibility.

12. Invest in creating great content
People want to work with a company that is seen and recognized as an industry leader. Investing in online channels can help your business create great content such as text, images, audio and video, which provide consumers with information that adds value to their lives, gives them things to think about and keeps them engaged with your brand much longer than a thirty-second t.v. commercial.

13. Embrace collaboration
Readily available, free and easy to use, online tools allow easy mass collaboration between you and your consumers. See and embrace collaboration with your consumers as a business opportunity, a business development strategy and part of your long-term growth.

14. Mobile marketing = huge business opportunities
In Mitch Joel’s own words, “Cellphones have become the personal remote control for our lives.” Mobile channels offer business opportunities to connect, share and grow with your costumers. Be a leader. Seize the opportunity before others in your industry do.

15. Everyone is connected. Connect your business to everyone.

If you’ve read the book I’d love to see your list of main points or hear your thoughts on the book. Hope to hear from you!

Her er mine funn. Kanskje dere bør sette dere.

IBSEN VS HAMSUN: En oversikt over søkemengden på Henrik Ibsen (rød) og Knut Hamsun (blå) over hele verden.

Han sliter litt mot Samuel “Do you get it?” Beckett, men taper kun med en hårsbredd. Imponerende!

Men se her:

NÆRMER SEG: På oversikten over søkemengden kun i Norge, er bildet mellom de to likere, selv om Ibsen jevnt over har flere søk og flere nyhetstreff. Hamsun et hestehode foran i jubileumsåret. Husk at Ibsen selv hadde jubelår i 2006.

Google will show.

God kveld videre!

So what has led to the rise in the interest of fail, overtaking success at the beginning of 2009?

- the recession?

- rising popularity of fail humor?

- increase in worldwide pessimists?

Taking a look at the region and city popularity, Hong Kong is the most obsessed with fail, but is also relatively equal with success. Ireland on the otherhand is almost two times more obsessed with fail rather than success AND is the second region and city (Dublin) obsessed with fail. Nice to see a proportional Philadelphia at number 7. More interesting, when looking at languages, English is first (duh) with Swedish as second, Danish, Finish and Dutch following respectively. The proportion of fail interest is much higher than success. So, Scandinavians are more obsessed with fail then? Chinese is next, although the interest in fail is proportional to success, and then follows your romantic languages. German is proportional. All others? Portuguese, Italian and Spanish are all obsessed with fail in proportion to success.

Yes, I know, what the hell am I posting. But its Friday. Such is a success with a fail.

The explosion of the web may have caught out newspapers and a lot of journalists, but early adopters have been able to thrive in an environment where one man’s threat is another’s opportunity.

Certainly the web has caused a lot of problems for media and journalists, but the tools to adapt to this changing market have been provided for us.

What’s more, the vast majority of the most important ones for bloggers, journalists, editors and even PRs and marketers are freely available, easy to use and – perhaps most importantly – free.

Some of these tools are suited to building traffic, some for measuring traffic, some for sharing or collecting information and others to add value to traditional content.

Some will suit you, others will not. A couple may even be irrelevant and I will make no claims for what they will do for your traffic, brand, revenues or social life.

But these are all tools that I use, in some cases vital tools, and if you accept the metaphor of modern journalist as media Swiss Army Knife you need to constantly develop your skills and make use of the largely free tools you have at your disposal.

There are, literally, thousands of them out there and it can be confusing as to which may be of help and which – in all likelihood – will not.

These are the tools and applications I find most useful and I’ve tried to keep the apps, and descriptions of them, fairly basic. There may be some obvious ones I miss out, which just means I haven’t got round to making use of them or I don’t consider them worth flagging up for starters.

There seems to be a lot of suspicion surrounding social media and Web 2.0 apps. All I have to say to that is this: They are tools. How, and whether, you use them is up to you.

The only criteria are that they’re predominantly free and they are basic, widely-available online tools or apps.

Anyway, without further ado here’s the selection. Dive in.

Twitter and related

Twitter is, to my mind, so important now for online media types that it’s got a category of its own.

Twitter

The Web 2.0 Telegraph is the most fitting description I’ve seen of Twitter. Twitter is simply the platform of choice for important communicators interacting with one another: promoting links, sharing information, asking for help or shooting the breeze.

If you’ve built up good contacts in relevant fields on Twitter it’s the most important tool you will use.

• See: Twitter
• See also: Robin on Twitter

Twitpic

One picture is worth a thousand words, or 140 characters. Show Twitter followers what’s got your attention by connecting up your phone to Twitpic.

You can set up Twitpic so it directly and instantly feeds to Twitter, even old mobiles can do it.

• See: Twitpic
• See also: Robin on Twitpic

Twitterfeed

If you have multiple blogs and multiple Twitter personas you need to make sure the correct blogs are feeding to the correct Twitters. Doing it manually can be pain in the backside, so automating a feed to post to Twitter is worth investigating.

There’s some debate as to whether automated posting goes against the grain a bit on Twitter. As with anything, moderation and common sense are key.

If you’re using Twitterfeed you don’t want more than a couple of automated posts a day. A deluge of links will get you unfollowed. And Twitterfeed is no substitute for proper engagement on Twitter.

• See: Twitterfeed
• See also: Twitterfeed on Twitter

Hootsuite

If you manage multiple accounts it’s simpler to manage them from the same place, rather than logging in and out and juggling usernames and passwords.

I initially used Tweetdeck but it’s awkward and buggy. Hootsuite is easier to use as it’s on a webpage; simpler; customisable; and has useful add-ons like stats, URL shortening and scheduled posting.

• See: Hootsuite

Bit.ly

Essentially anointed by Twitter as the link-shortener of choice, Bit.ly is probably the best too. It will take your long link and make it into a 20-char link that won’t eat up your 140 chars in a tweet.

A simple interface and some basic metric-tracking and sharing tools are the cherries on the cake.

• See: Bit.ly

Twitterholic

Looking a bit rough around the edges now but this is the tool I used to build a following on Twitter by finding people in similar places or with similar interests to me.

It’s always easier finding people who will reciprocate if you have something in common, an area where a lot of people trying to build a group of followers fall down.

Social bookmarking sites

Using social bookmarking sites simply to try and drive traffic can be fruitless and potentially damaging. All have unique communities and all are different, even if they don’t initially appear to be.

If you’re representing a brand you may want to think twice before submitting ill-fitting links to Digg, Reddit and Fark. If you’re not going to engage or observe how things work, don’t bother.

Also be aware that chasing traffic, as an end in itself, can be somewhat self-defeating. Choose your bookmarking carefully.

Digg

Using Digg to its maximum potential – in terms of traffic – takes time, effort and patience. As with Twitter, it’s about building a community and using that community to promote your links.

I think Digg has a fairly narrow band of opportunities for editors or journalists. Funny, techy or sporty stuff seems to do best as Digg users tend to use it to share distracting, fun stuff.

The obscene amounts of traffic The Onion and Cracked get from Digg seems to bear this out.

Occasionally I happen to write something I think will do well on Digg, and I make sure I write a header and description that will appeal to Diggers.

A well-placed story on Digg will send you hefty amounts of traffic, and it’s good for in-bound links too. Also bear in mind the reason it’s there – it’s fun.

• See: Digg

Delicious

Of very little use for generating traffic in the way Digg and Reddit are, Delicious has probably grown into the most pure social bookmarking application.

It’s beautifully simple and, because it’s searchable, is a great repository for valuable information.

It tends to be used by people working in media, PR, programming and marketing so it’s a gold mine of peer-approved guides and information in these areas.

• See: Delicious

Reddit

Not a million miles away from Digg, Reddit has an arguably broader focus and is easier to get into for newcomers.

Reddit’s community is not to be messed with however. Get a link submission wrong and you’ll know about it.

• See: Reddit

Fark

Digg on speed, or maybe acid. Fark consists of ‘not news’ chosen by a community and as such a very difficult tool to wield with any success.

In fairness Fark is not a tool at all, but can be used as such. Many international media have successfully harnessed Fark as a tool to drive vast amounts of traffic.

A story on the front page will deliver tens of thousands of hits over a very short space of time, which often leads to servers being ‘farked’ – brought down by the deluge of traffic.

A very good understanding of the community is required, and there’s a good opportunity to sharpen up your headline-writing skills. Only the very best stories and write-ups are greenlit, but the resulting traffic can be huge.

• See: Fark

RSS, alerts and readers

Tracking the websites that are important to you, and sharing your own content with readers is an important element of the online Swiss Army Knife.

Netvibes

I say Netvibes because it’s the one I use and I think it’s smart, but any reader or personalised home page will do – they’re essentially much of a muchness.

If you’re in media or PR you need to keep up with events on a daily basis. That means browsing potentially hundreds of feeds a day.

Grabbing an RSS feed and displaying it in your reader alongside 50 others is a lot easier than going to those individual sites.

Add-ons like widgets, increased sharing abilities and clever use of APIs from other apps like Facebook and Twitter means you can potentially browse, and interact with, all the relevant bits of the web from one page.

Most have a public setting too. As a result I have a public homepage on Netvibes that displays all my various online real estate around the web.

• See: Netvibes
• See also Robin’s public page on Netvibes

Tabbloid

Takes your feeds and displays them in a newspaper format. A bit clunky, and there are a few similar tools out there, but handy if you get square eyes looking at a normal reader.

Can also be used as a promotional tool to round up your output on a regular basis.

• See: Tabbloid
• See also Tabbloid sample

Feedburner

Allows you to track and edit your RSS feeds, share links and embed ads in your feed. No earth-shattering, but provides far more control over RSS feeds.

• See: Feedburner

Google Docs

Put e-documents online, quickly, easily and – er – freely.

• See: Google Docs

Google Alerts

Track a developing story, stay abreast of any news concerning particular companies or trends or steal a march over others on breaking news relating to your chosen keywords.

• See: Google Alerts

Twitterfeed

Again. See above for details

Multimedia

There are a hundred ways to tell a story these days. Use images, videos and music to bring yours to life.

Youtube

There are half a dozen good apps out there that will allow you to upload and share videos, but for simplicity’s sake I’ve gone with Youtube.

Youtube as a platform is only really as good as your videos, but as a tool it’s probably more versatile than you’d think.

Most obviously it provides some fantastic, free, embeddable multimedia content. If you can’t do something with that you’re probably in the wrong job.

Insight actually provides some useful metrics – the one measuring the attention span of watchers per video for one – while playlists, audio beds and annotations allow for some personalisation.

Add a customisable channel page and Youtube becomes a valuable tool in branding and hosting.

Live Stream and Vimeo may be more obvious, and going forward will come into their own, but for ‘quick and dirty’ Youtube is good enough for most.

• See: Youtube
• See also MotorTorque on Youtube

Flickr

Please be aware of what Flickr is not – a free image bank. If you’re going to use Flickr to source images you need to have a thorough understanding of Creative Commons licences, and some form of contact with individual authors.

Also, Flickr is not a link-building tool. Any links are nofollowed and business accounts are frowned on.

With that in mind Flickr can be invaluable for finding good quality images to accompany articles and is also a pleasantly simple image storage and presentation tool.

Image sets can be presented as embedded slide-shows, which can be a great visual dimension to a story alongside a static image.

Flickr can also be used to create links within photographer communities and can be used to promote photographic work.

Again, its largely self-policed by one of the more righteous online communities, so ensure you know what you’re doing.

• See: Flickr
• See also Robin on Flickr

Pixlr

Essentially an online Photoshop but cheaper (free actually), faster and simpler. Great tool that’s good enough for most photo manipulation.

• See: Pixlr

MPEG Streamclip

Good tool for video file conversion and some very basic editing features. Plays virtually anything. Can also be very good at capturing online videos if that’s your thing.

• See: MPEG Streamclip

Spotify

Weren’t expecting that one were you? But any new free app should be considered for the possibilities it provides.

A few brands have flirted with playlists, and I’ve done a couple of articles involving playlists to accompany articles.

There may not be a huge amount more scope than that, but Spotify is a free resource that offers free access to millions of tracks. Who saw that coming a couple of years ago?

• See: Spotify
• See also Crucial Three article on Liverpool Culture Blog

Morgue File

A good free image-bank site. The value of a good image to accompany an article can make all the difference. If you have access to a free image bank you’ve really no excuse. Remember to add a credit and check licenses though.

• See: Morgue File

Stock Xchng

Another great free image bank, with a premium level.

Mash-up and added value apps

Add value to your content with embeddable mash-ups and media that complement your content.

Dipity

Great for building timelines for events that can be embedded. Connect up RSS feeds to feed a topic or add manually.

The added value it can bring to a running story is not to be underestimated – it’s shiny and it’s useful, especially if you’re using your own content to build timelines.

• See: Dipity
• See: Dipity US car industry timeline

Google Maps

Google Maps should be subtitled ‘not just maps’. Any amount of mash-ups can be created with the API, but it’s just as easy to create interactive co-operative maps using the site itself. Also works well with Google Earth.

As with Dipity, you can add value to content and tell another dimension to a story. A no-brainer for travel reports and write-ups.

• See: Google Maps
• See: Half Map Half Biscuit

Cover It Live

The ability to cover an event live on a self-hosted platform can be invaluable. Cover It Live allows administrators to host guests, guide discussions and moderate reader comments.

While Twitter may be a more obvious platform for micro-blogging, Cover It Live can be embedded into a web page, customised and managed in terms of who can contribute. Images and video can also be embedded in the stream.

Again, it can add another dimension to traditional coverage and bring live events to life.

• See: Cover It Live

Xtra Normal

A tool that allows you to convert to text spoken by an animated character may be gimmicky, but it can be fun.

Any blogger worth their salt should be able to think of something at least funny to do with it.

If Xtra Normal had been around 20 years ago we could have had animated reports of Gerry Adams speaking to the UK via an animated avatar.

• See: Worried about acid erosion? on AdTurds

PollDaddy

Encourage user feedback and drive user-generated content with a poll – it can provide valuable insight or be used to drive original content itself.

Easy to configure and embed, you can stick it in the middle of an article one day and write a follow-up the next day based on the results.

Metrics, web editing and SEO

If you’re running a blog or website you want to be able to track its performance over a number of metrics. A basic understanding of SEO will benefit any journalist too.

Google Analytics

Or any decent analytics package that allows you to track, compare and dig down into various metrics.

Analytics will do all of that and more – you can’t seriously run a large website without something at least as powerful and detailed as Google’s statistics tool.

Analytics can be used at a very basic level for tracking your traffic and website performance, or can provide intricate details into what’s going on in the deepest reaches of your site if you drill down.

Makes a great pairing with Adsense.

• See: Google Analytics

Webmaster Tools

Webmaster Tools allow you to get your hands a little more dirty with the intricacies of web design and SEO.

If there are any obvious problems with the navigation and accessibility on your site, Webmaster Tools should flag them up, along with some SEO information on backlinks and keywords than may give you a different perspective on how your users – or search engines – view your site as opposed to how you view it.

• See: Webmaster Tools

Adsense

Making money from a blog or website can be something of a double-edged sword. I don’t have Adsense on any of my personal blogs, but do use it on other sites.

Simply put Adsense offers the ability to make money from your blog or site with a few clicks.

Style your ads, decide on what keywords you want to include on your ads, settle on placements and Adsense will generate code for you. Stick the code in your blog, verify your account and watch the cash roll in.

Don’t expect vast sums unless you’re doing thousands of impressions a day, and bear in mind the downside of changing your blog to a money-making device.

• See: Adsense

Google Trends

Stuck for blog topics or want to research a trend? Google Trends is a good way to track what’s popular, although Twitter Trends can be used in much the same way.

Comparing two or three different terms can be instructive if writing about brands, TV programmes or pop bands.

Trends also pairs up well with Insight, an advances search facility currently in Beta, which allows you to drill down into search data over different periods of time or by region and country.

Both are probably of more use to marketers, but keyword searches and tracking can also be useful for giving a fresh perspective on an article, creating unique content, driving Adwords campaigns or simply finding out who is currently winning out of Doctor Who and Star Trek.

• See: Trends
• See also: Who is winning out of Doctor Who and Star Trek?

Website Grader

A good all-in-one tool that will grade your site against others in terms of traffic, search engine placements, page rank and a dozen other metrics.

Can provide a good introduction to basic SEO and an insight into what you may be doing correctly or incorrectly.

Platforms

If you’ve not made the leap you’ll need a platform on which to host your blog or site. Make sure you pick a good one.

WordPress

So far in front of other blogging platforms it’s not even funny. WordPress hosted or self-hosted is easy to figure out, has an interface so intuitive it’s almost beautiful, good support and a peerless range of plug-ins.

If you’re a journalist you need a blog. If you need a blog, use WordPress. That is all.

• See: WordPress

Tumblr

Ultra-simple blogging platform that makes the easy-to-use WordPress look like quantum mechanics.

Tumblr’s simplicity and efficiency is its greatest strength, so if you need something that works out of the box and don’t need the extra bells and whistles, look no further.

Promoting yourself

Much as it pains me to say it, you need to be a brand these days, and that means at least providing people with the means to browse your skills and experience.

I use this blog to do that, but there are a couple of other tools around the web worth a look.

LinkedIn

I’m not actively searching for freelance or seeking a new job, so I’ve not got much out of LinkedIn so far.

If and when I do I’ll no doubt investigate further as this is what everyone uses. I’m not clear how much business actually gets done on LinkedIn, but for now I’ve got a page on there with the basics on.

ReTaggr

Unsure about ReTaggr at the moment, but it does what it says on the tin – essentially an online business card.

Using Google Trends and Insights, it’s possible to build up a rough picture of the scale and geography of “global warming”-related search-terms over time…

First up, it’s “global warming” vs. “climate change” vs “al gore” vs “inconvenient truth”:

“Global warming” is still the dominant term, but surprisingly seasonal.

Going by the last few months’ volume, “climate change” seems to have about 65% of its “strength”. [A chart here gives a combined reading for these two terms.]

The “Inconvenient truth” meme broke-out with the release of the film, and fell away in mid-07 — about 12 months of solid interest. Similarly, “Al Gore” searches — which showed truly dramatic spikes during ‘07 — have dwindled.

In 2004, strong interest in “global warming” seemed limited to the Anglosphere, plus India. Turkey, the Phillippines, China, Sth Africa, Japan, Germany, France, and Malaysia were next. Then the global explosion of interest in the first half of ‘07:

In the following months, “global warming” search breakouts would be detected in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Nigeria. The latest was Kenya in early ‘09.

“Climate change” currently shares equal status with “global warming” in just two parts of the world: NSW, Australia, and Ottawa, Canada.

“Al Gore” remains unexpectedly popular in northern Europe, but — aside from some additional interest in Argentina, Portugal, and India — he was only an international memestar for those twelve months after the film.

Now lets move on to the lower-end of the keyword-volume scale…

Interest in “global cooling” broke-out in late-05 in the US — and despite some interest in Australia, Canada, UK and India, it remains a vastly more popular search term in the US.

“Carbon credits” became a popular search term in late-06 in India and Australia — and New Zealand, Sth Africa, Singapore and Hong Kong were all proportionately higher than the US, where interest is relatively low.

“Carbon tax” rose to become a significant search-term in Canada during the first half of ‘08. Interest remains high in New Zealand, Australia, Ireland and Italy.

Terms referencing “skeptics” [separate chart] appeared on the scene in the US as an apparent knee-jerk reaction to the ‘07 spike in non-skeptical interest — and have been breaking-out during recent months. Australia is “leading”, followed closely by the US, then Canada and the UK. Surprisingly, no other nations registered significant search volume for these terms in English.

In the chart above, we see that skeptics have increasingly come to see “global warming” as something more sinister and man-made than a simple “myth”. (A trend which begins after the early-07 spike).

This clip (Lord Monckton’s warning before the Copenhagen Climate Conference) caused associated break-outs in late October. Monckton is touring the US, speaking against the globalist institutional “response” to climate change: the clip was taken from this 90min talk at the Minnesota Free Market Institute.

Of course, I’m just searching English-language terms, so despite the massive weight of English-language content online, this is a little deceptive. The final charts show “global warming” in some other languages, first at a lower order of magnitude — and then higher for Japanese, Spanish and Indonesian. (Portugese, would be yet another magnitude higher.) See them here alongside English results — they are puny!

“Global warming” in French — which showed strong early interest — and in German has fallen more dramatically than the English term.

The Indonesians are late-adopters, and the Chinese surprisingly early. Russian interest has grown more strongly than in the West.

Spanish-language interest has not leveled off significantly since ‘07.

Japanese results are surprisingly even.

Previously, I covered the recent “Blackwater Pakistan” meme breakout, measuring the meme’s strength based on its Google search volume. (A “breakout” is a 5000% increase over a short period of time.) Continuing to look at Blackwater, let’s see how associated search terms have changed over time:

We see the “Blackwater mercenaries” meme given it’s biggest test in the third quarter of ‘05 (after their deployment in New Orleans), after which language falls back into morally-neutral territory — often equal to “contractor“.

The “Blackwater muder” meme breaks-out in ‘07, following the Baghdad massacre [legal archive], but really takes off in ‘09, with the allegation that Eric Prince had people murdered as part of the bungled cover-up, which also included $1m in bribes to Iraqi officials.

Other details have emerged — child prostitution, drug abuse, narco-trafficking, falsifying contracts and “holding” employees passports, arms smuggling, money-laundering, use of blended-metal ammo, a sharp increase in DC “lobbying“…

Giant talking douchebag Keith Olbermann demonstrates effective use of the meme, circa August ‘09:

In early Sept, Blackwater’s Iraq contract was temporarily extended in Iraq — their replacements, Triple Canopy, aren’t ready — and a spokesman claimed Blackwater are moving out of military/diplomatic security and into “law enforcement” and “hostage rescue training”. [Don't forget "disaster response".]

I could not find the time to update my blog for the past one month. Yesterday when I was going through articles and research findings I came across some important facts which I thought of sharing with you.

It looks like that in the year 2010 search engines are going to play a major role than before. Influence of search results is the major part of the purchase decision cycle. Based on research it was found that 68.3% of search was related to the consideration stage and almost 42.6% search came for decision stage.

When looking at the above graph it is also clear in the recent past the money spent on online had taken high and had exceeded the other mediums. Also in the travel industry search engines are the game deciders. In year 2009 so far it has been noted that 66% of the travelers use internet to plan their travel arrangements, 56% made online reservation and 34% of the travelers visit search engines first when considering destinations. The trend looks amazing and it shows search engine marketing is going to be the high prominent marketing strategy for travel firms. (This is not only for tranvel but for other industries as well)

In the search engine market still Google remains as the market leader. Please see below the graph

But there are threats for Google as well because of the rise of Bing. Google has already lost its 1% market share and Bing starting to grow . Within just a 3 months it has gained the 0.4% market share which has high travel technology as well. So in future it can be turned out as a major travel search engine. Let’s see what happens.

Now its time for e-marketers to look at the new search display trends. You need not consider just building web links. Now its time to think of videos, news articles, blog posts, images etc. Google algorithm also has changed accordingly. In simple it means SEO is not going to be the just tweaking the site. It is all about creating and optimizing whatever forms of content make sense for the business industry. Now Google has changed the algorithm, which values the video content much as well. Also according to research, video marketing is the number one tactics that US marketers are focusing in 2009. Please see below the e-market source

So what are the recent changes in Google? It has recently announced (Oct 7, 2009) the search results now feature an option allowing users to view formatted PDFs from within the browser. Also Google introduced the new feature on Sep 23, 2009, to the Gooel toolbar that allows anyone to leave comments about pages as they surf the web site. The more comments you have for your site the more value is increased.

Google’s searchwiki, a major addition to its user interface that allows users to edit search results. When using searchwiki you can re-order, remove or add web pages to search results for any query. You can add any number of comments you want, but there are few criteria Google consider. The quality of the entry, the author and user contributed signals such as voting and flagging. But one thing I have noticed the old SEO mantra remains the same. Meta tags, title header, alt tags and content are the kings anyway.

Few travel insights

Social media integration like videos , photos , blogging and tweets are going to play a major part. In simple I can see that the role of Social media effort is to directly influence social communities so that the social media pages show up in the search results.

Using the social media effectively is going to be the major factor in future. Measuring the ROI and taking proper actions are going to be critical. Based on e-marketer research 84% of Social Media Programs don’t measure ROI. They just do everything without having proper mechanism,

Please find below some measuirememnt of ROI you can use.

ROI is a function of the goals may not always be monetary, but people have to consider ROO(return on objectives) such as branding, awareness relationship and engagement.

Here are some cool tools I found when getting contents for my post.

Post Rank – Allows to enter a feed URL and returns statistics about its posts, including which are the most popular based on how many times they are shared on variety of social networking sites.

Xinu – Is a handy website where you can type in a URL and receive a load of useful statistics ranging from SEO to social bookmarking and more.

Google Trends – People can compare the world largest interest in favorite topics.

Also use Google analytics and feedburner, quancast and copmeptecom If you are running a small site you can use Clicky instead of analytics.

Although off line marketing trend is stronger now, but it is time for every business circle to think of online marketing much stronger than before.

The meme, unsurprisingly, originates in Pakistan, and relates to these recent events:

Frequent media reports of (mostly) US diplomats being detained with weapons and surveillance equipment.

The suspicious raid on Inter Risk Security — a DynCorp security subcontractor for the US Embassy/Consulate — and the arrests of Ali Zaidi (founder/CEO) and Jamil Abbasi (a human rights activist); allegations of bribery; improper weapons licensing, etc… 70 weapons were seized — but pictures show they are not “sophisticated AK-47s” as reported.

Inter Risk’s covert training camp at Rawat — where 200 ex-military were inducted into the Inter Risk / US Embassy security team — was also raided and shut down. The 200 trainees were allegedly hidden away in “safe houses.” It’s also claimed that Inter Risk and/or US security factions were/are using the Police Training College in Rawalpindi to build the ranks of local PMCs.

Craig Davis of CAII was arrested and deported by security servces for having too much contact with local militants. [Pak Embassy in DC issued a new visa and he was returned on a private flight soon after!] CAII (Creative Associates International Inc) are a US NGO — also active in Iraq and Afghanistan — receiving funding from USAID, and are allegedly a Blackwater (“kala pani”) front based in Peshawar.

Steven Cash, lawyer (Yale) and ex-CIA counsel — who spent time in the Directorate of Operations (covert action) — is accused of being the head of the “Blackwater” office in Peshawar, and of bribing and threatening journalists. Cash is a former Chief Counsel to US Senator Feinstein, ex-counsel/staffer on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Subcommittee on Terrorism, Judicial Committee, House Select Committee on Homeland Security, etc, now “consulting” in the private sector as Deck Prism LLC, based out of a suburban address in DC (ph 301-908-3927).

Or perhaps Matt Rosenberg, a Seattle-based writer, is the “chief operative of CIA and Blackwater in Peshawar”, as alleged in ‘The Nation’ — the source of many of the stories and rumors comprising this meme.

Reports of foreigners entering the country on private flights and/or without clearing customs — such as the recent 4am arrival in Islamabad of PK-786 from Heathrow.

Photos of hum-vees on trucks being transported northward towards Islamabad.

Reports of “Blackwater check posts” around Kahuta.

Retired General Mirza Aslam Beg suggesting to an Iranian paper that Blackwater [not Cheney's JSOC hit-team?] was behind the Benazir Bhutto assassination.

The claim that Kestral Logistics‘ warehouse in I-9/3, Islamabad, is being used by “Blackwater” to smuggle sophisticated weapons and ammo into Pak.

Outrage over US plans to massively expand their embassy in Islamabad’s high-security “Red Zone”. US also seeks to increase its quota of “diplomats” from 380 to over 700.

US Ambassador Patterson arranged to have Shireen Mazari’s column in ‘The News’ suspended after she offered criticism of US policy and covered the “Blackwater” story. In 2008 she was removed from her position as director of a Foreign Office think-tank under US pressure.

The emergence of “new” militant groups such as Jundullah, TTB — and the BLA — which are believed to enjoy US/Afghan aid and support.

Almost every every act of terrorism targeting civilians is quickly denounced as a false-flag attack — either staged or assisted by “Blackwater” / CIA / US Embassy, etc.

The US is also seen as intentionally inflicting excessive “collateral damage” with their drone-strikes — serviced by Blackwater contractors — reinforcing popular sentiment that US grand strategy is to create instability — “divide-and-conquer” — and that the end-game is the Balkanization of Pakistan.

Note that there is no evidence which definitively proves the rumour of “Blackwater/Xe” in Pakistan. If true, the assumption is that they operate through secret subsidiaries and subcontractors, and with the assistance of local proxies — companies like Inter-Risk and Kestrel Logistics/SPD. Just remember that 70% of the official US intelligence budget goes to private firms.

WAZIRISTAN TALIBAN AND WESTERN “GOOGLE SCHOLARS”

Farhat Taj in ‘TheNews‘ (Jang) asks the educated people in Waziristan to speak out publicly about local Taliban. He contrasts the reaction of the educated class in Swat Valley, who are “better integrated” and were more able to “interact with the media to highlight the brutal Taliban occupation of Swat.” He also lambasts Western researchers who clumsily use sensationalistic OSINT to create irrelevant content:

Because the educated people of Waziristan are silent, people around the world and in Pakistan have provided their own answers to questions like those raised by Ayaz Wazir [Pak Foreign Ministry, Afghan affairs - TC]. The answers are not only baseless but also ridiculous. Bizarre ideas have been attributed to the people of Waziristan by writers in western countries, who, in the words of a cynical Pakhtun, are engaged in “Google scholarship” to understand Waziristan. This means they Google Waziristan and write a whole book or research papers on the area. [...] The “Google scholars” hardly pay any attention to research ethics when attributing notions to people and culture of Waziristan. They could never assign such bizarre ideas to people in western countries with the same ease with which they do in the case of the people of Waziristan, because in the west research ethics applies to researchers.

Continuing, he outlines the mainstream mythology of the Taliban in Waziristan [bullets mine]:

The other group of people who spread lies about Waziristan are armchair analysts, and pro-establishment and right-wing journalists and writers in Pakistan. The lies and the Google-scholarly notions are:

the tribes of Waziristan back the Taliban, actually the tribes are the Taliban,

the tribes have given refuge to Al Qaeda terrorists under the tribal code of Pakhtunwali,

Talibanisation in Waziristan is a reaction to US drone attacks in the area,

the Taliban are Pakhtun nationalists,

Talibanisation is an indigenous movement for social justice,

the people of Waziristan are attacking Pakistan because the state is seen as siding with the US,

the people of Waziristan are fiercely autonomous and abhor integration in a modern state structure, etc.

A PHANTOM ENEMY?

An article by Muhammad Idrees Ahmad in LeMonde Diplomatique describes the situation in the Peshawar area:

[...] Now, many Afghans are leaving because Afghanistan feels safer. There are checkpoints all over the city, many kidnappings, and in the past month, there have been at least three suicide bombings and four rocket attacks, most targeting Hayatabad.

[...] On the bus to Peshawar I’d met a youth, studying English literature at the University of Punjab, who was returning home to evacuate his family from the Khyber Agency. I asked him who the Taliban were, and he replied dryly “we all are”. A taxi driver showed me the flood of refugees from Khyber’s Bara region, and said the Taliban were a “phantom enemy” invented by the Pakistani establishment to justify foreign aid. He warned the government’s actions were actually creating the enemy that it claims it is at war with.

[...] Public opinion is incensed: according to an August 2009 Gallup poll, 59% of Pakistanis see the US as the biggest threat, compared with 18% for traditional rival India. Only 11% see the Taliban as the biggest threat (although that number is growing). While the poll also revealed 41% support for the military operation in Swat, a higher number (43%) favoured a political resolution. The insecurities of the Pakistani defence establishment are worsened by US assistance to India, including the transfer of advanced military and nuclear technology.

[...] The morning after the rockets [Hayatabad] I walked to the local market to buy tanoori bread. Once sold for Rs 2, it now sells for Rs 15. Wages have stagnated and inflation and unemployment are high. On the street there was no talk of the threat to lives. Everyone complained about the impossible cost of living.

I think it is, and I tweeted so yesterday. And the reason is obvious. What is SEO about? Ultimatel

I think it is, and I tweeted so yesterday. And the reason is obvious. What is SEO about? Ultimately, it is about one thing: the ‘website’. It’s about making a website and its pages discoverable, ranked favorably in search results, described appropriately so that searchers hook on the description etc.

But ‘websites’ are not ‘in’. Check the diagrams from Google trends for websites below.

Website traffic for 5 major IT companies

Website traffic for the 2 major consumer goods companies

While the overall number of people online is increasing, the visits to the web sites keep falling.

At the same time the volume of searches for these brands shows a completely different picture.

Search volume for the 2 major consumer goods companies

Search volume for 5 big IT companies

In the last 12 months CG companies see a volume increase or remain steady (amidst the crisis) while, for IT, a longer perspective reveals a mixed picture that has to do with what these companies are and technologies they offer:

oracle and ibm are gradually decreasing,

apple is increasing,

dell increases too although less quickly,

and hp seems to hold its ground or slightly decreasing.

But there is an equally important movement undergoing: people shift their reliance from search to peers for news, recommendations and answers.

I don’t remember how many times and about how many things I have asked my twitter friends’ advise. And it always comes. And most of the time it’s good too. Not so abundant as search results, but who reads search results past the first page anyway?

Enter social seach. Google injects results in search from our social graphs (opt in). I don’t have to reason the usefulness of this.

What should we expect? What else than these two inversely related trends accelerating? Less reliance on search, more reliance on peer recommendations.

There are some interesting implications here: SEO consulting and search advertising have profited from our reliance on search. Search won’t go away anytime soon, especially with the social element in it. But what would be the need for SEO? And what would be the need for adword advertising, if the important factor in search results turns out to be our peers?

Is Google shooting its own foot? So it seems. But I am sure they have figured it out already and they are thinking of alternatives.

Enhancements in the products, technologies concerning to what we use today is always appreciated and welcoming. If that change proves to be useful for the end users, product demand will eventually increase in market which will finally increase the productions. LCD technology assembled products are the similar illustration of the goods which greatly augmented electronics’ market throughout the world.

LCD TV’s frequently take over the usual CRT televisions and can be mounted on walls or can be kept easily in small corner of your home. LCD TV’s become popular at the time of their induction but did not grab hold on common users because of the high prices bounded with them in comparison to CRT TV’s. But today you can even buy cheapest LCD TV’s just for few dollars.

If someone is planning to purchase a brand new LCD TV for home use, then its better to first search out the market for the various service provider’s and manufacturers and qualities associated with each brand. Ensure that your LCD screen have higher color depth to produce more colors and quality picture display. Its better if your screen has shorter response timings that will make your picture does not blur in the screen, even when you watch swiftly moving items on it.

You won’t be sorry! Google Insights and Content Networks. I just received information from How

You won’t be sorry!
Google Insights and Content Networks.

I just received information from Howie Schwartz, a leading Google expert, about Google Insights which is a powerful tool which helps you to compare search information patterns including volume distribution per region, categories and time frames.

The purpose is to identify current and upcoming search trends, measure your marketing campaigns impact besides identifying and comparing with brands that are competing with your product.

This information will help you create relevant advertising messages that will benefit you and your business. Even if you don´t speak English, you will be able to use Google Insights for Search, as it is available in 39 languages like Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, traditional Chinese and more.

Since launching Google insights for search a year ago in 2008, Google is providing daily insights into what people is searching for. Using this tool you can compare search volume patterns across specific regions, categories, time frames and properties. Also you can find what brands are popular and where.

As per Howie, you can use this great tool to find hot white markets to help you make money. These data is relevant for you to choose Affiliate offers worth promoting besides other markets where to extract more money.

Erick Rockefeller and Peter Park brought us a very interesting information in a booklet titled Aggressive Affiliates which opens your eyes on how to get super targeted low cost traffic with high conversion rates. The purpose is to learn how to use PPC and incorporating web 2.0 tactics for long lasting income producing programs.

It is important to take into consideration that PPC networks are different with different leverage points you have to understand to get best results. The reason is that different networks relate to different geographical sources and your choice will make a difference because the results will be different depending on the demographics of the campaigns.

Google base covers a wide range of different age groups, levels of education and very different levels of technical abilities. This information is relevant to let us understand how to use advertising to your advantage and makes a huge difference on how to plan your advertising campaign for best results and maximum profits.

Google surfers are very savvy and they navigate the Internet to find information on specific topics to solve immediate problems. That is why most of Google Searches are How to or how do I related searches. Google surfers are giving better returns on quality of traffic than the other search engines. That is the reason advertisers are flocking around the adwords platform, as they know advertising will give them higher returns.

However, it is important to take into consideration the Yahoo front page which is highly stimulating and assaults all your senses simultaneously geared for a more younger and alert crowd. Yahoo front page is very interactive and provides the latest content with very interesting stories.

Many marketers are targeting Yahoo advertising platform. Content networks platforms can produce massive traffic fast. Reaching the right markets and niches with the right keyword phrases will help you show your ads millions of times per week. Which is great news provided they are targeted to million of hungry buyers with credit cards in hand ready to become your customers.

High click through rates will be more relevant if you are using this traffic to build responsive lists which will give a constant flow of sales from the same crowd produced by the advertising campaign. Customer lists are important because they will bring you thousands of dollars on autopilot.

For content networks the landing page should enhance the curiosity factor and give your visitors the info they are looking for in a way that they are eager to give you their name and email address. Once you understand content networks you are ready to get a constant flow of hungry buyers.

Thanks Howie and friends for this great information.

by : Alex Maas

Step 1: Choose the right product
You should choose some niche products to promote – you need to find a business opportunity, a niche with some space for your small, but profitable home business. You don’t want and can’t compete with top Internet retailers. Product selection is not a simple task, probably the most important one that defines your drop ship business success or failure.

There are certain websites and services that should help you to make an informed decision. The list is certainly not complete:

eBay Pulse

Amazon Top Sellers

Shopping.com popular searches

Google Trends

Google Insights For Search

Keyword tools (Wordtracker , Wordze)

It is not an easy task to choose products properly even with the help of the above sites. You need to monitor some categories for weeks to decide on what goods to test.

Step 2: Choose the right suppliers
You can search for local wholesalers ready to dropship your orders, you can search online, you can subscribe to a list of verified dropshippers and wholesalers.
Your goal is to find a reliable merchant or a few to offer you competitive prices and to fulfill your orders for selected product niche.

Step 3: Test the market
So, by this time you feel you have found products you can profitably sell online and you have merchants. now it is time to push them to your potential customers.
eBay.com remains the most popular marketplace for this sort of product testing.

Step 4: Grow your drop-ship business
You make eBay sales and see them increasing. It is time to think of a business plan to grow your dropship business. Your next strategy step is to develop a simple e-commerce website (you can easily find affordable service providers at freelance boards similar to eLance.com and Guru.com).

Then you need to design a promotion campaign using SEO, PPC, e-mail marketing, social media channels and keeping control of your ROI.
