Dear Blog,

I spent a majority of the day teaching myself how to create a Google TV Ad using the software Spot Mixer. It was a lot of fun and reminded me why I started my business — it allows me to be more creative than my day job does. There will be lots of work this weekend setting up new “social media” marketing channels to try to reach my target audience online.

In the meantime, my 6th grader attended her first middle school dance tonight. It seems like it was only yesterday that I was being dropped off at my middle school dance … can you hear those great KC and the Sunshine Band tunes? Boy do I feel like dancing now!!

Cheers!

For as long as anyone cares to remember, the marketing industry has been divided by lines, namely: a

For as long as anyone cares to remember, the marketing industry has been divided by lines, namely: above the line; below the line; and more recently online.

Each division has had its own skill set, and unique way of measuring results so that apples could never be compared with apples.

After many attempts by people a lot smarter than myself to find a universal way to measure the value of marketing across media, we have shrugged our shoulders and learnt to accept that we are dealing with fruit salad, and not apples.

But as technology continues to advance, those mediums that we had once accepted as mass, or above the line, are changing, and fast.

Basically, all forms of media are becoming direct.

Why?

Because marketers have always wanted more accountability, and less wastage, and now we have technology that can deliver that capability.

So the question really is:

When all media becomes direct what does it mean for the marketing industry?

It means the line does not exist, and we can fire up the blender on this fruit salad.

It means it is time for direct marketers to stand up, grab the industry by the balls, and drag it into the future.

Let’s take a look at a few traditional above the line mediums are changing

TV

Scared sh!tless by Google’s TV Ads, the major cable companies in the US have bound together to form Canoe Ventures. Canoe promises to be able to deliver marketers with the ability to address TV advertising direct to a defined consumers’ set top box, or in other words the ability to advertise tires only to people who own cars.

Canoe Ventures - Direct TV Advertising

This is a big step in the right direction, but if a direct marketer was in charge of this project what would happen?

Do you remember the 2006 Silver Cannes Lion winning ‘Ave a word‘ campaign by Glue London for the Mini Cooper S?

Refresh your memory before reading on.

What if you could pre-populate the variables of the ad and deliver it direct to a targeted consumers’ television?

“Hello Christopher, have a butchers at this, it’s the new Mini Cooper S”

Mini Cooper S 'Ave a word' Campaign

Hard to ignore? You betcha.

Deadly effective? Right again.

Sure there will be permission and privacy issues we will have to overcome, but you can’t stop progress.

In Australia, we have Foxtel’s red button to deliver more direct TV engagement, which has come a long way now that people have become accustomed to it.

Foxtel Red Button

Following the US lead, it is only a matter of time before Foxtel, Tivo and others start to deliver addressable TV advertising capabilities in Australia

Radio

Digital radio plus is nearly here!

Digital Radio Plus

According to the website this will “facilitate additional advertising information on demand…and the new technology can take radio advertisements to a new level using images and text,”

Bring it on!

Putting my direct marketing hat on, this would be really cool if you plugged it into GPS, so I can target an ad from the local McDonalds as you are nearing on the highway.

Outdoor

Direct outdoor is also gaining pace, and the most exciting example I have seen lately is the bus shelter ad from Fitness First in the Netherlands.

Fitness First Bus Shelter Scale

The seat measures the weight of the commuter and displays it on a digital screen, Biggest Loser style! As a personal trainer, I am so proud, but I am also a masochist so go figure.

If this is not PC enough for you, you could always use Pigeons with built in GPS for your direct outdoor.

Mobile

Not only do we have SMS and Bluetooth for direct in the mobile space, Yahoo have recently announced they will be bringing online behavioural targeting to mobile.

Mobile Behavioural Targeting

Behavioural targeting is claimed to double the average ROI of traditional banner ads with click-through rates up to three times higher.

Multi Channel Direct

To try and make sense of this brave new world, we have formed a new ADMA Multi-Channel Acquisition Council, where we will be discussing a lot of the implications of all mediums becoming direct.

In summary, WATCH THIS SPACE!

Google (S GOOG) announced today that advertisers will be able to buy commercials on The Hallmark Channel and The Hallmark Movie Channel through the Google TV Ads service starting early next year. While the deal will give Google access to both networks’ national audiences, the announcement did not indicate how much inventory Hallmark would make available to the search giant.

While Google struggled to get its TV ads service up and running, with just DISH Networks (S DISH) using the service, the search giant is starting to gain some traction in its strategic shift to targeting programmers. The Hallmark deal comes just a few months after NBC opened up some of the ad inventory on its Sci Fi, Oxygen, MSNBC, CNBC, Sleuth and Chiller cable channels.

Heading off Google before it could dominate the TV ad space like it does the search ad space was one of the reasons behind the creation of Canoe Ventures, the joint initiative of the six major cable companies to sell targeted ads and interactive services across those networks. Both entities talk about delivering better data from users to create more optimized ads. Canoe CEO David Verklin gave a fiery speech at NewTeeVee Live where he delivered the message: “Don’t count out the television business.”

Google has changed our world in many ways. Most of us now have Google tools on our desktop and many

Google has changed our world in many ways. Most of us now have Google tools on our desktop and many powerful Google enhancements to our everyday cyber lives. In the spring of 2008, Google changed television advertising distribution and revolutionized DRTV media buying.Through their affiliation with DISH network, Google now provides an auction platform for cable network media in 14 million satellite households. What’s more, for the first time in direct response history, advertisers have “overnights” that report total viewers, how long they watched, and in what program your short form infomercial or direct response TV ad ran. Google TV has already begun adding local markets to their inventory and recently cut a deal with NBC/Universal for even more inventory.

The impact of this new technology on entrepreneurial and established marketers is enormous. Now an experienced media buyer, direct response company, or turnkey infomercial / infomarketing company can shorten the testing process, substantially lower the cost of media tests, and make adjustments to a campaign on a daily basis.

The entrepreneur or infomercial product developer now has an opportunity to test more offers for less money in a shorter amount of time then ever before. At, my company, InfoWorx, we have embraced this new technology and utilize the latest research to target the client’s most profitable customer, reach more viewers for less dollars, and use all of the new metrics to analyse response and make more money for our clients.

The marketer’s best friend brings us yet another metric-centric marketing option worth a good,

The marketer’s best friend brings us yet another metric-centric marketing option worth a good, long look.

Last week Google and Bloomberg announced a deal that delivers Google TV ads to Bloomberg TV. Ok, big deal you say. Yes, they’ve already done this with NBC and Dish Network. Yet the interesting thing to emphasize again is that it brings Google’s metric-centric reporting technology (and subsequent ROI expectations) to a new medium.

Google TV ad technology can tell advertisers which ads the audience is watching second by second. The technology uses data from millions of anonymized set-top boxes, Google said. And as with Google’s search ads, for which advertisers pay only when users click, TV ads incur costs based on impressions actually delivered.

TV ads based on actual impressions and not the sheer privilege of owning a spot on some network’s precious airwaves? Now there’s a concept.

Google continues to charge ahead and become more and more of a sensible budget option for marketers. You’d be wise to take note.

Google TV is now out of Betaand pulicly accessible.

Although not embraced to the degree they expected during the beta itself (my old agency’s TV buyers scratched their heads at it), this does offer the potential to create a marketplace similar to that of search, although the media dynamics are altogether different and the inventory is currently limited only to DISH. Media marketplaces represent a level of automation that commoditizes certain low value aspects of the buying & selling process that are labor intensive and erodes margins - it’s part of the future. Google TV merely sets a precedent on what is possible – trust me they are not the only ones attempting to create and automate a TV buying marketplace. Agencies have however been watching Google move into areas beyond their home turf, so to speak, and some of getting nervous.

I mentioned previously that in 2007 Martin Sorrell, chairman of WPP has referenced Google when discussing the competitive climate in the industry more often than he publicly discussed other agency holding companies such as Omnicom, or IPG. WPP also acquired or made investments in many media/technology companies in the last year or so, hedging their bets on a potential competitive suite of tools and products? Or simply diversifying a portfolio of complimentary companies to keep a level of spending under the same umbrella? Only time will tell.

Vincent Dureau, the head of television technology at Google, is clearly a big believer in the potent

Vincent Dureau, the head of television technology at Google, is clearly a big believer in the potential of online video. He was previously chief technology officer of OpenTV and a pioneer of interactive television delivered to the set-top box.Speaking at the IPTV World Forum in London, he argued that internet protocol television is already with us on the web. “IPTV is already deployed on a very large scale,” claimed Vincent Dureau.

“It may not necessarily take the form that we consider IPTV sensu stricto but it’s definitely there.”

By which he was referring to online video delivered over broadband.

“The most important thing about this is that with the deployment of broadband it is actually becoming viable to distribute television point to point as opposed to broadcast,” he said.

Whereas the broadcast world is limited by spectrum, we now have infinite shelf space. Although people may think we have enough television channels already, Vincent Dureau believes that there is a virtually indefinite appetite for television.

By way of an example of the millions of short clips now available on YouTube, which is now owned by Google, he suggested that the long tail could be very long indeed.

In fact, he argued that the largest IPTV deployment in the world was BitTorrent, the peer-to-peer file sharing system often used to download illicit copies of movies and television shows. He also suggested that NetFlix, the online video rental library with 90,000 titles in its catalogue and 8 million members, is the largest legal IPTV deployment.

Although the majority of its business consists of sending DVDs through the mail, it also has an online library of 7,000 titles, larger than any currently offered on cable.

“It’s also very clear that within the past six months we’ve seen this huge shift of mainstream broadcasters making their content available on the PC,” he said, referring to the BBC iPlayer and the NBC Hulu initiatives.

“There is a clear recognition among the premium broadcasters that there is an underserved population that is watching TV on their PC right now and they want to address them.”

Although much of this activity is currently concentrated on the personal computer, he pointed to the large number of retail devices that are connecting the television to broadband networks, an example being the Apple TV box.

Over 50% of Xbox or PS3 games consoles are also connected to broadband networks and the next generation of BluRay players are all going to come with an Ethernet port.

“I think it’s important to start looking at those devices as distribution channels for television content to the home,” he said. “The studios have figured out that maybe they don’t need the middleman

They should be able to distribute movies directly to the television.”

“There’s an infinite amount of entertainment content that’s coming to television.

The next assumption that I have is that viewers will not just watch the premium movies and premium channels but that they will also be watching the long tail.”

In the United States there are over 300 digital television channels available on a typical platform. Of those, only 40 are actually measured because the Nielsen panel of about 10,000 households can only measure with any degree of accuracy the channels that have more than 0.5% of the audience.

Google has been collecting viewing data from several millions of set-top boxes for the past 10 months. “The thing that we found out is that actually 40% of the audience is actually watching those channels that weren’t even measured,” he said.

“So we believe that the long tail matters. We believe the long tail is even longer.”

Google is optimistic that it will be able to do a better job of targeting advertising so that it is more relevant to viewers and that advertisers will be prepared to pay a premium for this.

“We’re going to see now an infinite number of operators of television through quality of service networks and over the top,” he said.

“We think that through targeted advertising we’re going to see a new source of funding for quality programming.”

The head of television technology at google conculded with a call to “embrace the web and understand that IPTV is not ahead of us – it is already behind us”
