Seccion Amarilla

Hello,

today I became nearly crazy by trying to embed a googlemap in a silverstripe template. It was usually quite easy even with typo3…

I tried this with the help of jquery:

http://marcgrabanski.com/article/jquery-google-maps-tutorial-basics

Standalone in a single html page the code worked perfectly. Then in my silverstripe generated site the map never appeared and I got javascript errors in firefox like these:

Error: google.maps is undefined

GMap2 is not defined

Then i saw another interesting thing: The map appeared properly in IE! after searching nearly the whole Internet I found this post in the silverstripe forums that explained that there is a problem with the doctype used by silverstripe generated html files…

The post´s solution:

remove the first line on the default template of silverstripe:

<?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”UTF-8″?>

silverstripe community seems to be great. you never code alone!

cheers,

Travel can be daunting. There’s so much you need to take into account, from the hard facts and

Travel can be daunting. There’s so much you need to take into account, from the hard facts and figures of your itinerary to the feelings and opinions of people who have already been there and done that.

So we have asked Steven Domanski, one of the Amateur-Expert Travellers we identified during our research project, to outline some of his top tips for what you should be looking for. Steven is a thirty year-old venture capitalist who was born in Brussels and now lives in London. He travels regularly to the US, Europe and South America – so he knows about travel!

Here, Steven gives his take on travel tips, both from the technology perspective, and the people. And he looks ahead to a time when the two might not be quite as separated as they are now…

A checklist for travel – Steven Domanski

First, you’re sitting at a screen reading this, so it’s likely you’re looking online, right now, possibly considering how the internet can help you research, plan and book your travel.

Here are some tips which have helped me with regular travel over the recent years:

It’s all about the price. Many of us are price-sensitive, especially during the current economic downturn, and the internet can be a great tool to help you hunt out the very best price for the travel you wish to take. Most airline websites today display the best available price during booking, which is great – but what about planning? What time is best to travel? The demand for flights and hotels can affect the price. By using websites like Farecast (the Bing Travel site) and Farecompare you can predict which months are going to cost less.

Listen to your peers. Increasingly there are ways to check out the service levels and quality of service you should expect from other travellers. They are using forums, sites and blogs to provide feedback on the service they have received at hotels, airlines and destinations. Before I travel for leisure I usually consult blogs and forums to see what other travellers have to say. Delicious and Digg can be useful here. Delicious is a social bookmarking site, so by searching through that, you find pages that people have tagged – not computers! – which can add credibility to the results. Digg is similar, with people voting pages ‘up’ or ‘down’ in preference, so the ‘best’ pages float to the top. Again, you get consensus from people as to what is most relevant or helpful.

Don’t settle for less. When I first started to travel, my budget meant I’d often book into hostels, but after further investigation it transpired that with a little careful planning I could have booked into a better quality of hotel under a promotional deal. The lesson for me was not to be put off by luxury brand positioning. It’s always worth a look.

Loyalty schemes pay off. I’m a regular traveller (in the past this was often for business). By registering as a frequent flyer with my favorite airline and hotel chain I managed to amass a large number of loyalty points which translate into great value leisure trips and flights.

Lead from the front. Of late I’ve been elected as group travel leader amongst my friends. This means booking our joint holidays and city breaks which can often be a complex process, requiring a lot of time and vast numbers of e-mails and phone calls. So, I’ve started to use travel booking applications on social networking sites like Facebook and investigated travel social networking sites like Tripmate. Some of these sites allow you to share calendars with friends and it takes the hassle out of the planning and booking stage.

I’m aware that everyone has their own personal favorites, so by all means, use every site at your disposal. And don’t forget that even seemingly unrelated sites such as Google Maps can help pin down locations, and there are many, many sites that can help with local knowledge.

There are also plenty of ratings and reviews sites that tell you in no uncertain terms what particular places are like, because they’re written by the people who have been there.

You can also take a look through blog search engines such as Google Blog Search or Technorati to find first-hand accounts that might help. Use them.

Don’t forget people!

And, at the end of the day, ask people!

This blog is called the Amateur-Expert Traveller blog for a reason. People are fast becoming experts themselves, and there’s no substitute for asking around. Those small hints and tips – for example, the best type of mosquito repellent, where to get visas, what sorts of vaccinations you might need – could help you avoid those minor irritations that can ruin any trip.

Increasingly there’s an interplay between people and technology, and this is giving rise to the Amateur-Expert Traveller. The tech seems to be empowering more people to find more experiences, and then to write about them online. I’ve already mentioned the blog search engines that might help, and blogs can be very powerful references from people who are passionate enough about travel to have written about it.

So the web is becoming an incredibly powerful way of conveying thoughts, feelings, emotions and opinions, and this can only benefit the travel industry and travellers alike.

Balance and decide

Still, it’s a balancing act. You need to balance out what you need, with what sites provide. You need to gauge how expert your advisors are. And there are probably plenty more decisions you’ll need to make, to get what you want.

Technology helps, and so do people. Amadeus looks to a future where both can work together more closely – where, instead of having to work around online systems, they work around you. Actually, it shouldn’t be a balancing act, because that takes time to learn. So for now, use the best of what’s available now, and talk to people, but look forward to a time when you get to play around, ask ‘what-if’ questions, and arrive at an itinerary without the hassle.

point = new GLatLng(lat,long); //lat y long son las coordenadas que quieres testear
streetView=new GStreetviewClient();
streetView.getNearestPanoramaLatLng(point,
      			function (latlng){
				if ((typeof latlng != 'undefined') && latlng!=null){
                                       //pintar el enlace como corresponda
				}
			} );

Ed Kohler really, really doesn’t like the Yellow Pages. Years ago I used to sell Yellow Pages

Ed Kohler really, really doesn’t like the Yellow Pages. Years ago I used to sell Yellow Pages for Hanson Directories in Iowa. I’m not exactly a great sales guy. Good at matching up customers to what will work for them, but I don’t oversell well and I’m not a closer, that being — to me — too manipulative. (Yes, they fired me. Even in 1984, a YP salesperson making $800 a week [$1,577/wk in 2007 $$] was considered to be a poor performer.)

In their day the Yellow Pages were the beast of marketing and only a very foolish business person would try to get away without a listing. How much to spend was always a good question, the YP folks being brilliant at squeezing every possible dollar out of advertisers. In the ’90s when I was building my resume business, the Strib and DEX competed to see who could screw the most bucks out of their customers. I think they both made more money from my business than I did.

That was then, this is now:

Those books were delivered to my apartment building two weeks ago today. Last night I noticed that not one of the five plastic-wrapped bundles of phone books had been opened. Not one tenant in my building wanted one. Not one visitor to our building wanted one. It was on the porch outside the security door so that means that every person walking by, every homeless person in the neighborhood (and there are more than a few) also passed on a chance to own their very own FREE! white and yellow pages for St. Paul.

Early this morning the landlord got fed up and put them in the dumpster. I need to thank him for that. Last year they sat there for a month before he threw them out, but then again I think someone did take one book last year.

It’s time for the legislature (not our city councils) to pass a bill making it illegal to distribute phone books to anyone who has not opted to receive one.

The phone companies had a great monopoly going. Too bad they had to ruin it. DEX could have thrived online but instead squandered a golden opportunity by being stupid. They made online Yellow Pages be all about pushing heavy advertisers when consumers just wanted a list of ALL the pizza places within a couple miles of home or the office. DEX refused to be transparent and tried to leverage their former monopoly into a new neighborhood.

Google Maps will do what you ask them to, and Google Maps is now eating DEX’s lunch. Oops, that was a link to the clued in folks who snapped up dex.com back when you could get three-letter domains. The phone book folks weren’t that savvy and had to settle for DEXknows.com, which was a lousy place to find a pizza until . . . [insert drumroll] … they teamed up with GoogleMaps!

DEX never figured out the internet and now they’re partnering with GoogleMaps to do together what only DEX could have done back in the ’90s. Had, that is, anyone at DEX actually heard of the internet back in the ’90s.

If you have a business, save yourself some money and kill your YP ads next year. Assuming, that is, that DEX is still around by then. But again just in case they are, the Lege needs to tell them what they can do with their unsolicited phone books.

[If DEX was smart, and I think we've established that they're not, they'd stop giving away phone books and would instead start selling them. Make the oldsters who aren't online pay for the publishing costs, and make money by putting ads back into the main book.]

-

Hmm, gotta bunch of links but the YP rant ran a little long.

Expect another post later but for now, enjoy a rare mono-topic post from Minnesota’s wordiest blogger.

If nobody told you, you might not even notice it, but the team at Google Maps just introduced some subtle visual improvements that make their maps easier to read. Worldwide changes include narrower roads, better contrast between text and the rest of the map, and colors that don’t conflict with traffic and other overlays. You’ll also start to see road detail at a slightly more distant zoom level. In short, the map view just became more like the hybrid map-satellite view. How much this matters to you depends partly on where you live. Some cities received specific changes to the appearance of their maps. For example, Beijing’s subway line is now marked in colors that match the local subway map, and London’s rail lines are easier to see. To really appreciate how much clearer the new look is, take a look at some of the before-and-after shots on the Google Maps blog.

I just discovered two awesome tools, and my mind is reeling with possibilities for my students.

Google Maps allows anyone to create a customized map with placemarkers that, when clicked, launch a pop-up box complete with text, links, images, even videos. Think of all the novels or short stories where setting is prominent, especially novels that have multiple settings. Students could map the events in a novel. Last year my students researched texting: wouldn’t it have been awesome for them share their research by plotting texting incidences reported. What a way to share their research! Basically, Google Maps allows students to create Lit Trips, like many have created using Google Earth, in a quick and easy fashion, without having to download any software as you have to with Google Earth.

The other tool, UMapper, allows you to upload any image and add placemarkers just like you do in Google Maps. This is even better than annotating a Flickr image, because you can embed the interactive image on web pages, like students’ blogs and class wikis. This week, I’ll be having my students reflect on what they’ve learned the first nine weeks of school. They’ll first create an image–either by arranging items and snapping a photo or hand-drawing an illustration and snapping a photo. They’ll then upload the image and annotate it. The objects in the image will symbolize their learning. The placemarkers will allow them to add text to explain what they’ve learned and even include images and links to content they’ve created and published online. I’m thinking this strategy would make an awesome first page of a portfolio–a completely visual navigation throughout their portfolios. Very cool. I’m also considering having students share summaries or reviews of the books they’ve read independently. They could snap a photo of the images or create an image by gathering book jacket images from Amazon. They can then annotate the book covers, sharing a summary or book review and embed the image in a blog post. I created the annotated image below just for fun. Click on the white placemarkers to see my annotations. If you can’t see it, you can see it here.

Both these tools are free and simple to use. To learn more, check out this blog post I’ve published on our Classrooms 21 District blog.

Huzzah! Google Street View has finally been released in Canada (and the Czech Republic). This Canadian blogger is pretty excited, since it has been a long time coming. There’s something surreal about finding your own house in Google Maps, then actually looking at your front door.

For people who have never used Google Street View, the functionality isn’t immediately obvious. To enable it, you have to drag the icon of a man that is above the zoom slider to a place on a street. The experience is pretty surreal the first time you do it.

Though this might just seem like a whiz-bang feature that looks cool but doesn’t have a real-world application, imagine you’re trying to get to an important appointment in an office building you’ve never been to before. Imagine how much easier it would be to find your way if you already know what the building looks like.

Yeah, one of those new features everyone doesn’t care for unless you’re making money off the ads. Evidently though, it’s been reported that the iPhone Maps application is now displaying advertisements on iPhone OS 3.1. There is nothing shocking about the new advertisements, given the Maps application makes use of Google Maps.

Maybe even more interesting is Apple may be trying to replace Google Maps with their recent acquisition of Placebase. One can only speculate if the ads had a part in the decision. Apple does like complete control…

Enjoy the upgrade!

Consider this: social media tools are making it easier for people to get around the places they live

Consider this: social media tools are making it easier for people to get around the places they live. Mashable Josh followed that assertion with “a list of ten great social media tools to help you better navigate your city.” I marked Josh’s post, thinking that I might have cause and time to go back and actually read it.

Then a real live navigation-related problem sent me back to the post and to some of the tools it lists. This Sunday should see the second open house (the first one went well, thankyouverymuch) for our condo. Said condo is about a hundred yards from the route of the 2009 Roslindale Parade. The two events are as close in terms of time as they are in terms of space, in that both are scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

This presents several real-life problems. To make them concrete, let’s imagine that one of the people who would attend the open house is called Robin (a name that could indicate either a female or a male, and one with connotations of nesting).

Problem (0) is the basic navigation problem: how to get to the condo. That’s too easy to qualify as smart navigation, but I list it as the baseline navigation problem. It’s the nail for which the standard hammer used to be MapQuest. Google Maps has, I think, taken over that position; anyway, it is the first tool on Josh’s list of ten.

Problem (1) gets us into smart navigation territory. Robin, on the way to the condo for the open house, finds that some of the roads on the suggested route are closed. A smart navigation tool would tell Robin about a route available at the time – in real time, if you will. Google Maps addresses problem (1), as does Waze, the second tool on the list.

Problem (2) involves smarter navigation. Robin knows ahead of time that certain roads will be closed due to the parade, and would like to be able to print the map ahead of time. Perhaps Robin suspects that real real-time navigation is a bad idea, since it distracts attention from driving.

Perhaps Robin wants a map of the parade route. All right, perhaps I do. The parade’s web site doesn’t provide one. It provides a text description of the route. “Washington St. at Adams Park in Roslindale Village, to South St., to Belgrade Avenue, to West Roxbury Parkway, to Gottwald Rotary, to Centre St., to South St., and ending at Fallon Field.”

Is there a tool that takes text directions as input and gives a route map and directions as output? I’m not aware of one. I tried to use Google Maps to draw the route along a street map, but it kept on taking shortcuts, or going 20 miles north to a different Gottwald Rotary, or…

Then I went to the third tool on Josh’s list. He describes Wayfaring as “a great Google Maps mashup that helps users to easily create their own information maps.” I have to describe it as a service that gave me a “404 – page not found” error during signup, and then could not find a location called “boston massachusetts.”

At that point I gave up on this particular attempt to use these “smarter navigation tools.” My frustration didn’t just come from the web tools. It also came from my overlapping attempts to find out from the police the times at which the parade roads would be closed and reopened. I was transferred from the local station, to media relations, to field services, to special events (I think I have those names right) before I had the sense to give up.

I do have a couple of positive notes on which to end. First, I did get an answer to my street closing times question. I used the contact form on the Roslindale Parade website. I got a prompt response from Tom Donahue, chair of the parade committee, by good old-fashioned email. Tom expects Belgrade Avenue to be closed from about noon to about 3:30pm, by the way. The other good news is that the open house is going ahead (starting at 11:30 instead of noon).
