The free application, Google Latitude, introduced earlier this year for a variety of cellphones, was originally designed to let friends see each other’s locations and then contact each other via SMS, IM or phone to meet up when they’re in close proximity.

Now, by enabling a new location history feature, users can store, view and manage their own past Latitude locations as well. With Google Location Alerts, meanwhile, they can be notified when friends are nearby, thereby avoiding the need to keep checking Latitude for updated activity.

Both new features were popular feature requests, software engineer Chris Lambert noted in announcing the changes on the Google Mobile blog.

About a year after Microsoft Corp.’s hostile, contentious and unsuccessful bid to buy Yahoo In

About a year after Microsoft Corp.’s hostile, contentious and unsuccessful bid to buy Yahoo Inc., the two companies appear set to join forces to take on a common rival – Google Inc.

The Wall Street Journal reported tonight that Microsoft and Yahoo are hours away from announcing a search and online advertising deal. According to Kara Swisher, a blogger for The Wall Street Journal, negotiations have been successfully wrapped up on a deal that is expected to have Microsoft’s search technology used on Yahoo sites.

This new Microsoft-Yahoo partnership could give the two companies some much-needed leverage in their ongoing – and until now, separate – battles to chip away at Google’s stranglehold on the search market. With Carol Bartz still new at the helm of Yahoo and focused on making the once-online-pioneer hip and fresh again, and Microsoft’s Bing search service only a few months old, neither company has been able to make a noticeable dent in Google’s well-polished, and well-funded, armor.

So a strategy that has them pooling their resources and industry might makes a lot of sense, says Dan Olds, an analyst at The Gabriel Consulting Group.

“Both Microsoft and Yahoo need this deal if they harbor any hopes of getting back into the lucrative search game,” said Olds. “Search has become the most reliable way of capturing eyeballs on the Internet and having a popular search engine is the basis for all of Google’s success. Both Microsoft and Yahoo have invested billions of dollars in trying to build search and content portals that would be able to command Google-like ad revenues. But both have failed to blunt Google’s revenue growth individually. Together they might have a better chance.”

Both companies have also been making separate moves in recent months.

In June, Microsoft unveiled its new search engine, an update to its far-from-beloved Microsoft Live Search. And with Microsoft’s advertising power and a lot of media attention behind it, Bing has shown strong numbers just out of the gate. Early this month, Web analytics firm StatCounter reported that Bing may have nibbled away at Google’s commanding lead in the search arena, but it definitely hasn’t taken a big bite. While Google Inc.’s share dipped from 79.07% to 78.48% in June, Microsoft’s search site share grew from 7.21% to 8.23%.

Yahoo is hanging in at a distant second place to Google with 11.04% of the market.

StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen described Bing’s progress in the market as “steady, if not spectacular.”

And on its own front, Yahoo last week unveiled the beta of a newly overhauled homepage, whose promised features include the ability to integrate with social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Myspace. The changes are an apparent attempt to recapture some of the hip cache the site had during its heyday.

The problem for Microsoft and Yahoo is that despite their efforts, Google still looms far ahead of both. Olds, however, said they have a much better shot at their shared opponent if they work it together.

“Separately, they have small fractions of Google’s viewership, but together, with a well executed plan and solid cooperation, they have a shot of at least giving Google a run for its money,” he added. “Google needs to take this seriously, which I think they will. Microsoft and Yahoo have a lot of resources to throw at this and they now have a partnership and a plan.”

More than once I have searched for something on Google and gotten back too many results that don’t matter. One of the problems with IT is that everything moves and improves quickly. It’s such a pain when get results that over 2 years old and don’t matter because the technology has moved on.

Use the advanced search of Google to get results that are relevant. You can tell Google what date range to use (how recent the page is), for example past week, past month, past year. That way you will only get pages in the results that are from the your date range. This helps when you’re working with bleeding edge technologies.

I do get it. It is a filtered version of the internet.
More than that. A real-time-filtered version of the internet. You’ll get links from people you chose to follow almost real time.

Brilliant. In fact, I keep twittering here.

Will it scale? Is it “monetizable” as it scales? That’s the 500 million dollar question… Which, I believe, Facebook never bothered to ask before making its alleged bid for Twitter.

As far as I can see it doesn’t. A real time search on the messages posted on Twitter is an unbelievably attractive proposition. Both from a user point of view as a businessman. Boatloads of money there.
Unfortunately in order to have the amount of content Twitter needs to, to be really useful/useful, it needs to add a lot more users. In order to make the content generated by those users profitable (ie searchable in real time through a sort of referrals program (this is where I think it will go)) it needs a lot more infrastructure, more than Google has now, which means money. It’s a wild goose chase for me.

One final note.
In the past week I’ve seen three friends explaining to acquaintances why Twitter was useful. Perfectly acceptable.
However the simple fact that you had to explain it makes it a not-so-attractive proposition for me. It has its niche and I’m sure it will keep growing. Not sure it will ever reach the 150 million users of Facebook , it’s just not as familiar a concept as Fb is to most people.

One more thing. Just this last concept was so long that I never could have twittered it.

Was?

What does web application gets from Google Gears? Straight and simple as google says.. - Interect wi

What does web application gets from Google Gears?
Straight and simple as google says..
- Interect with Desktop
- Use gears local server for caching.
- Store data in offline mode and synchronize when online.

Last thing is seems most interesting to me.. I can use the webpages even if i am not connected to internet. Thats cool. I used an webapp that uses google gears http://www.rememberthemilk.com for this purpose.

[ Lightweight database on client Side ]

Gears uses SQLite for database support. And its secured, because a web application cannot access data outside of its domain. More importantly it supports fulltext search.
Using this Database API is very Simple Only two classes Database and ResultSet. Using this api is so simple i cant help copying the code.

// db is instance of Database

var db = google.gears.factory.create('beta.database');
db.open('my-database');

// rs is Instance of ResultSet

var rs = db.execute('select * from TestTable order by Timestamp desc');

while (rs.isValidRow()) {
alert(rs.field(0) + '@' + rs.field(1));
rs.next();
}

Its simple . This feature is actually for storing user data in offline mode and when user is online, this information has to be synchronized. Still i am not clear enough about how synchronization should be done.

[ Another most interesting feature : LocalServer. ]

Pages and files/resources can be served in offline mode from Localserver. When localServer is configured to serve some url, it caches those files/resources with urls. Each time that url is requested localserver servers those resources/files without sending actual server request. Thats one cool thing.
How does Localserver know which urls to cache?A manifest file is used to tell the urls and version info of the urls. Local server gets the manifest file each time. And update resource from urls if it doesn’t have the latest version.

[ Using Google Gears in your page. ]

* Install Google gears first http://gears.google.com/
* Download this script gear_init.js
* Include this script in the page

=: First thing you should in your page is check whether this pc has google gears installed.

if (!window.google) {
alert("gear is not here!");
location.href = "http://gears.google.com/?action=install&return=http://yoursite.com";
}

=: How do you get the api implementation of Gears? Gears provides an Factory for this.
This is how you will get the LocalServer to cache files.

var localServer = google.gears.factory.create("beta.localserver");

And get the database..

var databae = google.gears.factory.create("beta.database");

Using these localserver and database is simple and i am not going to present them… google documented them good enough.

[ Other supports from Gears]

There are other supports like httpRequest, Timer. But they are not new in Javascript programming. Actually these are implemented to be used from Gears WorkerPool

For “Interect with Desktop” They should have said file access feature..
Because their implementation gives two feature.
- Can create shortcut in pc file system.
- get a file content from the pc files system. File content is served in Blob format.

Oh here is one thing new here “Blob“. That’s an implementation by Google Gear.
Javascript itself doesn’t have Blob support. Blob can be passed into, and returned by, a variety of Gears methods.

Other cool things in Google Gears are GeoLocation & Workerpool API. Hope to give a demonstration on those soon..

People see the internet as a living breathing thing. It changes by the second, advances by the hour

People see the internet as a living breathing thing. It changes by the second, advances by the hour and more and more people use it by the day.

Many people forget about the goings on of 2000/2001 (read more below) and seem to think that websites, due to relatively low overheads will be more immune to the impending recession we now face.

Well think that at your own peril!

Even google are at present preparing themselves for the recession.
Their share price is at a 3 year low and has halved in the last year.
Every company peaks! And maybe, just maybe google has peaked and is now seeing a downturn. It’ll take a while for the boys like Yahoo and MSN to catchup but with google this past month reversing certain “Rules” they had, such as allowing gambling firms to take out sponsored selling and attempting to push You-Tube into E-commerce. They are seriously throwing their weight about trying to bring in extra revenues.

Established websites are cutting their marketing budgets and smaller websites are pushing less into google adwords and more into SEO, hoping the longer term effects of good seo will see their sites thrive or at least survive.

All of this will hit google hard over the next 8 months or so. Maybe they are big enough to ride the storm but the term “The bigger you are the harder you fall.” has never seemed more apt!

In 2000 /2001 there was a big “dot.com bubble burst” which saw many websites, which had received millions of pounds of investment thrown at them, go POP!

The stock markets in western nations had watched stock valuations rise faster than usual and with less caution. This quickly turned into a gold rush.
Venture capitalists suddenly wanted a dot.com or a part of a dot.com.
Being dot.com’s these companies where nigh on impossible to value, but simply based on the amount of investment received many individuals who had the intitial ideas for these websites, found themselves on paper at least to be suddenly multi-millionaires.

It didn’t take long of course for the stock market to step back and look at these sites and realise they where never in a million years going to recoup the tens of millions invested in them. That’s when it all fell flat on it’s face!

The Dot-com bubble crash wiped out $5 trillion in market value of technology companies from March 2000 to October 2002.

Famously Boo.com set out to become a global online fashion empire. They spent about £100m in a space of 6 months, the site launched in Autumn 1999 and was placed into receivership in May 2000.

Yahoo went from a high stock price of $128 at the peak of the bubble to a low of $4 at the end.

Lycos where the “google of their day” and where sold to Terra Networks for $12.5 billion in 2000, they where sold on for just $95 million dollars three and a half years later.

Infospace stock price hit $1,305 per share in March 2000 but by April the following year the price had crashed to $22 !!

Cowen & Co., an industry analyst firm that specializes in covering Web services, released a statement today discussing its findings on the success of online mapping solutions.

To no one’s surprise, the analyst found that Google Maps is the de facto leader in the space, while its rivals, Yahoo Maps, MapQuest, and Live Search Maps have slipped well behind Google. According to the analyst, much of Google’s success is due to the fact that its competitors simply don’t have what it takes to keep pace.
The analysts cited Google’s Streetview and public transportation services as main reasons for its success and its continuing investment in improving its mapping solutions places it further ahead of its competitors.

After a lawsuit from a Christian anti-abortion group, Google is allowing religious organizations to

After a lawsuit from a Christian anti-abortion group, Google is allowing religious organizations to take out ads using the keyword “abortion,” a rare case of the search giant admitting it was wrong.In March, Google rejected an ad from the Christian Institute, a British organization, that read, in part, “UK abortion law: Key news and views on abortion law from The Christian Institute.”

The group, which wanted to advertise because the House of Commons was considering a bill involving abortion issues, filed a lawsuit against Google in April, saying the company was discriminating on religious grounds.

Google has limits on what can and cannot be advertised; it will not allow ads for products derived from endangered species, for example, nor will it allow ads promoting violence. In the past, Google would not sell the “abortion” keyword to religious groups, but did sell it to other groups, including secular groups, doctors offering abortions and resource sites like Our Bodies, Ourselves.

Google’s policies are based on a number of factors. “We build out our policies based upon local customs and business practices and, as any sensible business would do, review them from time to time to make sure they are up to date and current,” said Ben Novick, a London-based Google spokesman.

Google reviewed its policy, and announced last Wednesday it had reached a settlement with the Christian Institute. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed, but Google immediately began allowing ads linked to abortion from religious groups as long as they were determined to be factual, and not graphic or emotional ads. Google uses a combination of automated and manual processes to detect advertising violations. The change in policy applies worldwide.
