Si sou usuaris de Windows o Mac, segurament la sola visió d’un intèrpret d’ordres us provocarà urticària. Però si sou usuaris de Linux, si enyoreu Unix o si vau començar amb MS-DOS, us pot resultar curiós, o fins i tot útil, interactuar amb Google a través de la línia de comandes.

Goosh (Google Shell) és l’intèrpret d’ordres no oficial de Google i l’ha programat Stefan Grothkopp amb AJAX. Si a primer cop d’ull podria semblar una joguina per a geeks, la veritat és que és molt ràpid, versàtil i potent. A banda de la cerca a cada un dels serveis específics de Google (blocs, imatges, notícies, mapes…) permet executar Gmail, fer operacions matemàtiques, traduir textos… Podeu instal·lar el seu motor a la caixa de cerques de Firefox amb el comandament addengine, cosa que permetrà executar-hi les ordres directament. Executant help, man, h o ? obtindreu una llista de les ordres disponibles. Mitjançant l’ordre settings es pot configurar lleugerament la interfície i canviar la llengua, el número de resultats per cerca, els estils…

Cercando approfondimenti su Ubiquity, un nuovo interessante strumento sviluppato dai Mozilla Labs per Firefox che consente tantissime operazioni da una specie di riga di comando, mi sono imbattuto in Goosh.

Stefan Grothkopp ha sviluppato un nuovo strumento attraverso il quale i veri appassionati della linea di comando potranno compiere ricerche in Google, tramite un interfaccia simile a quella del terminale di *nix.

Il funzionamento è molto semplice: basta digitare le proprie chiavi di ricerca al prompt dei comandi, come potete vedere anche nell’immagine.

Come sulla consolle classica, ls elenca i comandi disponibili, help una guida (si può usare anche man “nomecomando”).

Goosh, è un’interfaccia puramente testuale, ciò nonostante permette di accedere alla propria posta elettronica (su google), oppure effettuare le classiche ricerche. Il risultato è limitato a 4 occorrente. Se cerco immagini o mappe, purtroppo non vengono visualizzate in ASCII-art.

Al acceder a Goosh aparece un prompt esperando a recibir un comando por parte del usuario. Se puede ejecutar la orden help para que muestre una lista con todos los posibles comandos. Algunos de ellos son:

* wiki palabra_clave (para buscar palabra_clave en la Wikipedia)
* clear (para limpiar la pantalla)
* lucky palabra_clave (abre el primer resultado al buscar palabra_clave)
* read url_feed (mostrar los últimos posts del feed indicado)

Si se ejecuta el comando addengine se instalará el motor de Goosh en la caja de búsquedas de Firefox. Así ya se podrán ejecutar los comandos desde ahí, de una forma más rápida y cómoda que teniendo que entrar a la página web. Por ejemplo, se pueden realizar traducciones rápidamente utilizando el propio traductor de Google. Sólo hay que ejecutar un comando del tipo:

* translate es en hola

donde “es” y “en” son los códigos de los lenguajes origen y destino de la traducción, y “hola” es la palabra que en este caso se traduce de español a inglés.

O también la búsqueda de direcciones, que devueve una imagen del mapa con la localización exacta que se ha buscado, así como un enlace directo a Google Maps para obtener más detalles:

* place dirección

sustituyendo “dirección” por una dirección postal habitual, del tipo “calle, población, ciudad”.

Entre todos los posibles comandos que se pueden ejecutar también están las búsquedas en los diferentes servicios específicos de Google: búsqueda de imágenes, blogs, noticias, feeds, videos y mapas.

15 Examples to Browse Google From Command Line Prompt

Goosh (the unofficial Google shell) provides command line interface on the web for several Google services to keep the command line junkies happy.

Linux users who are comfortable with command line prompt, will love to surf the net from command line using Goosh.

Goosh allows you to quickly search Google web, images, news and Wikipedia search. The output is presented in a very nice readable command line environment.

For the impatient, go to Goosh prompt, and type “web {keyword}” at the prompt to search Google from the command line.

Once you like the basic output come back to this article and figure out how you can use Goosh effectively using the 15 examples given below.

1. Google web search from Command Line Prompt

Following is the syntax for the search.

Start the search using s followed by the keyword as shown below. This will gives you the top most 4 URL as result.

To get more search results do one of the following.

2. View Google Map from Command Line

Goosh command ‘place’ is used to do a google map search from the goosh prompt. Following is the syntax to do the search in google maps.

Use wiki command to search the Wikipedia website as shown below. Following example will search for geek in wikipedia and return the output.

4. Open Website in Browser from Command Line

6. Search Google news from Command Prompt

Goosh command ‘news’ is to read news on your favourite topic from the goosh prompt. Following is the syntax for reading Google news.

7. Translate a word in Google Translate from Goosh Prompt

Goosh provides a command to translate a word from one language to another language.

Following example translates the word “Good Morning” from English to Spanish.

8. I’m Feeling Lucky – Get the 1st Search Output Always from Command Line

Simulate the “I’m Feeling Lucky” Google button behavior from command line as shown below. The example below will open the 1st results for Paris Hilton automatically.

9. More: Get more results, that is the next results set page.

Goosh command “more” gives next set of URLs for your last search which is very useful when you want to go beyond the next 4 results.

11. Google blogs: Search in blogs using Google blog search.

Goosh command “blogs” in goosh is used to do search in blogs using google blogs search. This will display the list of blogs URL which matches the given keyword.

13. Access Gmail from Command Prompt

When you enter login command as shown below, it will forward you to Google accounts page to enter your authentication to login to Gmail.

Once you enter this command, it loads Gmail login page. You just enter your gmail account details (username and password) and hit enter which will log you into gmail.

If the provided credentials are correct, it provides you a Goosh prompt with your account name in it. This indicates that you’ve successfully logged in to gmail from command prompt.

Goosh command “gmail” is for you to read and write in gmail. It provides you to access your gmail account in google shell itself. This is a mobile version of the gmail embedded for easy display.

Don’t think of your own pant. This Goosh is not disgusting, but great. This is simply a shell version of Google search, which mean you won’t see our favorite search engine logo and all its images, instead, you’ll see a simple command line interface with Google search functionality. It’s a fun tool for geeks anyway.

To provide it’s functionality and access to Google, Goosh is coded using AJAX . Goosh provides Google main search features such as Google News, Feed, Video, and Blog. All search result will be displayed in the text mode. Goosh also provides Wikipedia searching.

When the first time you run Goosh, you’ll see their welcome screen (of course, all in text). Now try some searching mechanism, type “web s online games”. Then it will simply search using Google and provide you the result just like the real Google Search. To see the complete commands, type “h” or “help”. Mas não para por aí, o usuário pode controlar sua caixa de entrada do GMail, é só usar o comando login, pesquisar por locais usando o comando places, pesquisar conteúdo específico em um site, com o comando site.

En otro de mis paseos por Internet me tope con algo bastante interesante (al menos seguro que para los geeks si), y no es ni más ni menos que una aplicación web que simula una shell no oficial de el archirecontraconocido buscador google..

Intente conseguir una verdadera shell conectándome por SSH con el user guest y pass guest y aunque el puerto esta abierto no me pude loguear con esos datos

Pero para todos aquellos que disfrutan hacer las cosas al más puro estilo geek, o que deseen buscar en google como lo haría Chuck Norris (bueno en realidad Chuck Norris no necesita buscar en Google), goosh es lo que andabas buscando.

Angeregt durch den Artikel auf seufz.wordpress.com über goosh, einer “Google Shell”, habe ich ein wenig gegoogelt, ob diese Shell auch schon irgendwie auf einem echten “Linux-Terminal” implementiert ist oder ob so etwas ähnliches geplant ist. Dabei habe ich einen Blogeintrag über Goosh gefunden, bei dem in den Kommentaren etwas über ein “surfraw” stand. Mit surfraw kann man in der “echten” Kommandozeile ein paar Suchmaschinen ansprechen und z.B. “googeln” und sich dann die Ergebnisse entweder in einem graphischen Browser oder einem textbasiertem Browser wie lynx ansehen.

Will man beispielsweise bei Google nach unserem Blog suchen, sieht das so aus:

Beide Befehle verhalten sich gleich, sr ist einfach dazu gedacht, Tipparbeit zu sparen. Neben der Option results, die die Anzahl der Suchergebnisse beschränkt, gibt es noch viele weitere Optionen, die man sich unter

ansehen kann. Neben google kann man mit surfraw zum Beispiel auch bei wikipedia suchen.

Ich stell mir das ganze sehr nützlich vor, wenn man gerade in der Kommandozeile programmiert und nach einer bestimmten Funktion o.Ä. suchen möchte.

More awesomeness is that blogs, images, video, RSS feeds, and wiki are searchable by one key command. Soooooo say I need a map to say… Astor Place, in the East Village of New York, right? I just punch ‘place Astor Place, New York’ and bam!

RSS feed searchability is definitely one of my favorites. I also like how I can search within sites with one commend… and bottomline, for an avid 2.0er (like me), goosh is perfect when I feel like google’ing with no distracting extras.

Difficile de battre en brèche LE hot topic de la journée. Cuil est un nouveau moteur de recherche lancé par des anciens de chez Google. Il promet un plus vaste index de pages que Google – de la frime inutile en fait, entre 300 et 400 millions de pages trouvées, nobody cares – et présente les résultats de votre recherche sous forme d’onglets “intelligentes”. Les premiers essais ne sont pas révolutionnaires mais l’interface 3-colonnes est plaisante et efficace.

Nul doute que Cuil devrait parvenir a se tailler une miette du gâteau de la recherche sur Internet car Google ne devrait pas tarder à agacer. En effet, rien ne me surprend plus que l’hégémonie quasiment incontestée du géant made in Brin and Page.

Google fait des concessions pour s’implanter en Chine, on pardonne. Youtube refile en douce ses données utilisateurs à Viacom en échange d’une immunité sur les abus de copyright, petit tollé mais tout va bien. Google est utilisé par les 2/3 des internautes, Google nous invite à installer sa toolbar sur nos postes qui analyse et enregistre tous nos faits et gestes en mode détente, Google finance les écoles, les universités, certains projets humanitaires, d’autres scientifiques, soigne vos enfants… Etrangement, Microsoft jouit du même monopole sur l’univers du software et tout le monde s’indigne.

Comment Google parvient-il à ne pas être diabolisé? Est-ce une questions de temps? Ses patrons parviennent-ils à ne pas faire étalage de leurs revenus que nous imaginons pharaoniques? L’insolente position de Google est-elle tout simplement éclipsée par l’expansion généralisée de l’industrie du web? Les dépenses de mécénat sont-elles assez visibles pour nous faire gober la pillule?

Voici un petit panorama des moteurs de recherche alternatifs – le terme “concurrent” ne semble malheureusement pas approprié – qui vous permettront de faire la nique au manitou.

Commençons par le commencement, les moteurs qui se font les hérauts de l’interface et de la transversalité des sources informatives, sans autre objectif d’améliorer l’expérience de navigation.

Addict-o-matic affiche les résultats de votre recherche sous forme de wall composé des sources les plus fréquentées, quelles que soient leur nature : texte, vidéo, son et autres.

Allsearchbox fonctionne selon les mêmes modalités et permet en un click d’interroger simultanément les sites généraux les plus fréquentés.

SearchMe présente les résultats selon une interface soigneusement copiée sur celle d’iTunes.

Même topo pour Viewzi qui propose de naviguer entre les fenêtres visuellement.

Place aux moteurs plus sophistiqués, à l’affut d’une évolution des algorithmes de recherche plutôt que d’un simple relifting graphique.

Powerset, récemment racheté par Microsoft qui-n’a-pas-dit-son-dernier-mot sur le juteux marché de l’Internet. De loin le plus prometteur des challengers de Google, Powerset incarne une nouvelle catégorie de moteurs de recherche sémantiques, qui s’attache à saisir le sens – au sens linguistique du terme – de la requête, contrairement au reste du monde qui fonctionne selon des mots clefs. Powerset est disponible en version béta et fonctionne pour le moment uniquement au sein des articles de Wikipédia.

Wikia, lancé en début d’année par Jimmy Wale, le papa de Wikipédia. Echec cuisant pour le moment mais feuille de route prometteuse à travers l’intégration des personnes et de leurs réseaux sociaux dans les résultats de recherches. Dans les faits, aucun de ces projets n’est encore opérationnel, peut-être le seront-ils un jour…

Wikiwix cible les plus férus de Wikipédia d’entre vous, à travers une interface épurée et un périmètre d’activité concentré sur la célèbre encyclopédie. Un petit bonus en quelque sorte, dispensable en diable mais potentiellement utile.

Pour terminer, quelques search engines qui ne mangent pas de pain mais dont les caractéristiques sont à remarquer.

Ecocho plante deux arbres toutes les 1000 recherches effectuées grâce à l’argent récolté via des liens publicitaires fonctionnant grosso modo selon les mêmes modalités que chez Google. Cocorico, c’est un site français.

Goosh s’adresse aux plus geeks puisqu’il n’a d’autre mérite que de détourner Google selon une interface graphique tout en code brut, façon MS-DOS.

En guise de petite conclusion, nous pouvons noter sans prendre de risque que la route sera longue pour la concurrence… Google règne sans partage sur le marché de la publicité en ligne, son principal rival Yahoo est dans le rouge et ne souhaite pas s’associer à Microsoft, ce qui risque d’ouvrir une voie royale à un bon vieux monopole. C’est sans compter sur l’Union Européenne… Même si le business modèle est bon, qui empêchera Google ne pas systématiquement racheter à grand coup de survalorisation les start-ups aux bonnes idées?

Le deal avec Digg a récemment échoué mais devrait tôt ou tard finir par être entériné, renforçant par là-même le schéma d’indexation des résultats reposant sur un modèle participatif. Quelle force de frappe pourrait investir suffisamment de fonds dans l’avenir pour contrer Google et son armée d’ingénieurs et de financiers aux aguets?

Aucune raison particulière de pleurnicher en tant qu’utilisateur, mais en tant que publicitaire, quel champs de possible pourrons-nous explorer au sein d’un paysage aussi balisé? On vend des liens sponsorisés, OK, et après?  On rentre dans les petites cases, comme tout le monde…

I haven’t been very geeky in this blog to date. I’ve only been sort of geeky in life, although since I have become a technical consultant, I’m getting a lot more geeky these days. That said, I have to fess up to being quite happy with GUI interfaces for lots of things. But thanks to a post by Mr. J. Wylie, I now know about Goosh, a Unix-shell style interface to Google. No value judgement – I still spend more time in a browser than in a shell, but for those who like a command-line interface, it is excellent. I may get seduced by things like the wiki command: >wiki [keywords] searches Wikipedia for whatever keywords you type in (no brackets). Faster than loading the Wikipedia home page and typing in the keywords. Thanks to Stefan Grothkopp for Goosh!
