Traditionally antibiotics have been given to remedy this. Yet, research in the Lancet Medical Journal suggests that 88% of children never need antibiotics, and in those that receive them the risk of reocurrence is high.

Chiropractic care, on the other hand has been found to be both safe and effective at decreasing pressure on the nerve supplying the Eustachian tube, which drains the middle ear to the back of the throat.

British prime minister Gordon Brown put forward his Afghanistan strategies during the Commonwealth s

British prime minister Gordon Brown put forward his Afghanistan strategies during the Commonwealth summit on 28 November. Afghanistan president Karzai now faces bigger pressure from international communities, particularly, from the US and UK who contribute the most troops in the country.

Mr. Brown’s statements were made in an imperative tone, a rare phenomenon among world leaders.

Within three months, our benchmark is that the Afghan government should have identified additional troops to send to Helmand province for training.

Within nine months, President Karzai should have completed the process of appointing 400 provincial and district governors.

Some 5,000 additional Afghan troops should be sent to Helmand province to be trained by British forces stationed there.

…

A shameful president

Despite sitting in the No. 1 chair in Afghanistan, Mr. Karzai is not treated as head of a country. Brown speaks to him as a father sets rules for his child.

Karzai made so much efforts, even cheating in elections, to ensure himself a second term as Afghanistan president. He should be humiliated for neither pooling enough domestic support nor winning respect from his overseas counterparts.

Strong Brown

Gordon Brown, meanwhile, is pretentiously playing tough to gain points for himself and his Labour party.

The ongoing Iraq inquiry again stirred up the noiseness that UK is a poodle of US. This might cause Labour party’s support ratio to decrease. Brown needs to demonstrate himself not another poodle of the US like his predecessor Tony Blair.

This is proved again on 29 November when he told BBC that Pakistan must do more to “break” al-Qaeda and find Osama Bin Laden.

“If we are putting our strategy into place, Pakistan has to show that it can take on al-Qaeda.”

Oliver Platt as Carl Anheuser

Jimi Mistry as Dr. Satnam Tsurutani

My past reviews have been pretty long and boring, so I’ll cut this one short.

Review: Is there anyone in this world, who has not escaped the clutches of Roland Emmerich? Ever heard of Independence Day, Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow and 10,000 BC? Definitely. So here comes another one, 2012, which is also based on Roland’s favourite theme: destruction. Now there are several apocalypse theories ranging from a huge asteroid hitting the ocean to Jeremy laughing on Candace, but Roland chooses the Mayan prophecy of solar fires which happens once every 600,000 years. Incidentally, that is also the time Kolkata Night Riders will take to win the Indian Premier League. Once.

John Cusack plays Jackson Curtis, who is a failed novel writer and a divorcee as well. He now works as a limo driver to earn money, and that must be the reason Kate Curtis left him in the first place. Now Jackson meets a maniac in Yellowstone, who tells him why the world is ending, and also that the US Government has arranged ships (or arks) for their survival in the ocean, via a splendid amateur Flash animation. But what is not clear is, that why the government is keeping all this secret.

And Indian (Jimi Hendrix) informs a White House executive about the end of the world, by calling him to boiling Calcutta. It is also that same Indian who saves the world in the end, telling the same White House executive that a huge tsunami was coming over.

Towards the end you’ll realise that the Earth’s geography has changed dramatically. The African continent is now extremely fertile, and the south pole is stuck in the middle of the United States.

Like all of his previous movies (such as Independence Day, which is widely regarded as the worst movies ever to become a hit), 2012 is a big pile of noise and action, with absolutely no proper story or screenplay. It’s a ridiculous film. A pathetic one. A failure. And nothing extraordinary at all. The acting is poor, which is probably because there is no scope of acting here. The dialogue is ridiculous, and so are the facts. Dr. Satnam speaks in the way Americans would speak Hindi, not the way a native Calcutta guy would. In fact, he should not even speak Hindi, but Bengali, as he’s living in Calcutta! Another one: In a particular scene, Jackson’s plane takes off with family and Russian boss Yuri with a huge ash cloud behind them. So much ash in the air would definitely cause an airplane’s engines to go kaput. However, special effects are flawless, nothing like you’ve ever seen before. But Roland, you must realise (along with Michael Bay), that gone are the days when the audience could be won only on special effects! We need a solid plot, screenplay and acting to go with it, something which District 9 achieved successfully.

You must have realised by now, that 2012 is a bad film. It has been panned by critics all over the globe. But you know what? Once you finish watching the movie you actually feel its good, completely knowing the fact that you really shouldn’t have liked it. Is the dialogue silly? Yes. But does it make you laugh? Oh yes. Is it stupid? Of course. But do you really care? NO!

There are memorable moments in the movie, especially the one in which Jackson is driving the limo with his family at a high-speed, when the road is cracking beneath the car. Buildings are falling down, and the limo jumps right through them. Oh, how can you forget the scene were Gordon takes off in a plane, when the runway is crumbling behind? And that scene, where Yuri and the others are sitting in a sports car (was it a Porsche?), and after Jackson’s failed efforts to start it, he says

Eeengine. Staaart.

at which it promptly revs up.

When it ends (rather too stereotypically, with the hero getting lost and resurfacing when presumed dead), you feel happy. It’s global cooperation that saved the day. Which will save the day any day, even today.

2012 is a flawed, worthless and too long at two hours and forty minutes, it is an becomes edge-of-the-seat thriller with some brilliant moments, which makes it one of the must-see movies of the year.

It is just so exciting to go to a restaurant in bikinis or in your most comfi robe. More and more ho

It is just so exciting to go to a restaurant in bikinis or in your most comfi robe.

More and more hotels seem to open a restaurant in recent years, however, according to Booking.com, only 65 out of 193 hotels have restaurants currently. We asked Gordon Haig, head chef of Novotel Edinburgh Centre, what he thinks the reasons are.

I could not meet the busy head chef of Novotel Hotel as when he is not working he is either travelling with his family to explore new cuisines or he is ‘just’ too busy looking after Johnny, his one-year-old son.

Haig started as a sous-chef four years ago in the hotel and after leaving for another hotel (Holiday Inn), he became a head chef. Last year, Novotel seemed to be missing Mr Haig so they offered him the same position in their kitchen (by the way, that is when and where he met his wife, as she was the sous-chef there at the time). As he has been always working for hotel restaurants, Haig knows a lot about the issue.

Haig calls F&B (food and beverage) a ‘necessary evil’ to hotels, and says that nowadays they have the urge to have it, i.e.: bars and restaurants on the premises. The number one reason for this is money, of course, according to him. Although most of the hotels do not have as much income from operating restaurants then from rooms, they (especially newly opened ones), have to have it.

Mr Haig, who works in a hotel from which a mile radius away there are approximately 130 restaurants, admits: ‘In Edinburgh there are so many restaurants, that a lot of hotels will just see it as there is no point doing it because you can make more money just by having rooms.’ Although this might be the case, there are certain advantages of hotel restaurants as well.

The upside of a hotel restaurant for the guests are on a vast scale: one can eat a luxurious 3-course meal in casual clothes, wet hair (after being in the swimming pool which a lot of hotels own also), they do not have to care about transportation (need to spend less money), bad weather, they do not have to pay straight away, as they can charge everything on their room (at most places) and only pay when they leave the premises.

This approves of Haig’s idea: ‘People choose hotels that have a restaurant mainly because it is more comfortable,’ he said. Businessmen often work in their rooms throughout the day and they can also find comfort in room service. ‘They do not want the hassle of going out if they’ve got work to do,’ said Haig.

However, there are also downsides of these restaurants: a lot of them are a part of a hotel chain, which results in a standardised menu most of the time. Accor, (the company owning Novotel, Ibis, Mercure and many others), Hilton and Marriott surely have a standard menu and these cover more than 7600 hotels worldwide. This suggests that there is not a great variety of dishes (around 40), while in a simple restaurant – according to Haig – there are at least 120 choices.

Standardised menus are often chosen by hotels as it is more economical. They can sign a contract with the suppliers for a year in advance (these menus often change in a year’s term) and thus, they get discounts and also a standard price.

For some, these menus can be good, though. It can mean that if one goes to a hotel of the same chain he can be sure that he will get the same quality, taste and flavour.

Despite the downsides, hotel restaurants are suitable for groups (even if they stay for a week or longer), unlike most ordinary restaurants. If a group books lunch or dinner, hotels can usually offer TDH (table d’hote, French for hosts table) and buffet menus as well. Also, if one would like to try the specialities of a particular destination, these restaurants are flexible: they can create a special menu for certain groups if asked in advance. Haig, however, says that it is always good to look for a small, local restaurant: ‘I like trying a restaurant where the locals would eat in, rather than a hotel restaurant,’ Haig said.

The fact that Mr Haig has been working in hotel restaurants since 1996 can assure us that he knows a lot about the matter. When asked about where he would eat on a trip to a foreign country, Haig said: ‘Unless the hotel has a really good restaurant, I would always go out.’ That can be an advice to think about…

David

“Dormir o dia inteiro. Zoar a noite toda. Nunca crescer. Nunca morrer.

O Vampiro do Brooklyn

The Phish tank was in a hazy thick fog before the show, the enthusiasm was stimulating, and the buzz

The Phish tank was in a hazy thick fog before the show, the enthusiasm was stimulating, and the buzz was a feverish feeling combined with elation and thrill calling out for the school of Phish to gather. I have witnessed many shows from many genres but what I have witnessed this day was a feeding frenzy that I haven’t seen in all my years of attending concerts or that I recorded in the five hundred plus SCUBA dives. The Phishing lines tangled up traffic lanes leaving the city to believe that the end of the world was only moments away. It was Woodstock in Syracuse brilliantly colored in a spectrum array of vivacious colors fluttering from flags, the Birkenstock sandals that were apparently fashionable in thirty degree weather as they are on a ninety degree foot sweating mud-puddle-skipping day of yore. Reflections of years gone by, of the deadhead clans, and of the seasons of love are long but over. It’s still cool, man and the day was heavy, man. What I witnessed was the gathering of one mind for one cause with Phish at the epicenter of this twenty first century hippie universe. All this hit me when I stepped out from my conformist vehicle after my Michael Jackson’s history funkadocious in car concert. After four hours, a raspy voice from singing, and some three thousand cows grazing on the pasture on my pilgrimage ride up North, I planted my Harley boots down on Syracuse pavement and took in a deep breath of Phish bated air. It was the Phish Phan’s way of greeting me welcome while bidding adieu to any conscious way of thinking.

Everywhere you veered your eyes shined a bedazzled spectrum of rainbow stripes printed on long dresses and on so many tie dye suits you couldn’t help to feel groovy. The smiling domino effect drenched Syracuse with free thinking Phishermen and Phisherwomen who spread their beauty in peace, shared their beers unconditionally, and who basked in their baking huddles with new found revelations under common displays of unleashed enjoyment. The lady’s twirled their orbiting talents through acrobatic hula-hooping. I am sure Ms. Sticks would have lead this event proudly on the parking lot stage. i was shocked to know that it was only 1:00 PM and Phish wasn’t going to be taking stage until 8:00 PM. Pre show parties filled out the schedule with regional music artists who displayed their talents on the street and at the official pre-show party at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena Complex. The transformation downtown simulated a floral parade of twenty-first century hippies shocking and awing the locals who congregated for their annual free Turkey drive. I was waiting for the bout to begin. In one corner the fifteen pound Turkey and in the other corner the hemp granola bar, but the arbitrator by mother nature kept order and peace allowing the free spirits to dance, hula-hoop, and to remain toasty in the late autumn chill (Toasty being the emphasis).

I met an amazing woman whose energy and passion for her work exudes her. The passionate Sandra Baker, VP of Sales & Marketing for the Oncenter received me with a great smile and a warm hug. “The Oncenter is dedicated to all the men and women who gave their lives and limbs to keeping our families and our country safe from harms way. It’s a remarkable venue with a wonderful museum displaying some of our hometown heros who served in the unfortunate wars and conflicts we have witnessed as a nation. Our ability to memorialize our local Vets is something we are proud of and honor with great respect.” Sandra shared insight with me to the history of the Oncenter Complex and welcomed me to take walk the glass enclosed memorial that also captured the attention of many Phish fans. Everyone seemed to be touched by the artifacts, the uniforms, the names listed on the glass windows, and respectfully walked with a serene calmness before entering the Phishing hole. It was here where I felt a sense of pride and a knot in the throat to see both doves and hawks uniting under one roof in the name of music.

The house lights blacked out and the venue fell into darkness swallowed up by the uproar of Phish fanatics making their presence clear. It’s was time to put away the stress of yesterday and time to devour the jam band of our generation. Phish walked out into the blue and white lit stage like ghostly apparitions of men walking into Vermont mountain scene. The hysteria penetrated the through the skin piercing the heart. I gathered flash frames in my mind of the faces in the crowd expressing awe, of emotional meltdown, of acceptance, and mostly of true appreciation. The reception, just short of gaggle of screaming bobby girls in the Ed Sullivan theater welcoming the Beatles back to New York, thrust the crowd forward. They waves of fans jumped high in the air reaching out to the boys from the Green Mountain State, and like that, the amps quaked the cameras in my hands and we were off on a very long strange trip that even Jerry Garcia would be proud to say he grandfathered.

The lighting captured the feel of a star burst beaming through thick forests cascading the mass in emerald greens, rich blues, luscious reds and vibrant yellows. I was compelled to stop shooting and to absorb what was taking place right in front of me. I turned around to face the crowd and took the entire moment in. The lighting coursed through the arena much like a river refracting the sun. Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon, Jon Fishman, and Page McConnell make up current day Phish. Four simply dressed men took their individual talents and blended their instruments into a bending musical sound welded together in flowing harmonies and breezy riffs. Phish took their place on stage, overtook and captured the minds of seven thousand plus adoring fans with a playlist set that had one beginning and no end in sight. “Rift”, “Weekapaug Groove”, “Stash”, “Llama”, and “Tweezer” were just a few selections that were mixed into the massive overload of music performed by what will be the longest running show off-Broadway. There are very few bands who can do what Phish has done by beating the odds as an American culture whose success was built mainly on their live performances rather then a concentration on creating new album material. Phish is now and will always be an institution to their liberal viewing audience and fans. These four free thinkers are going strong and face a long music journey ahead to play their innovative, improvisation, jam band music and have rightfully earned their place as heirs to the Grateful Dead throne. Phish has been swimming upstream for over twenty years now and I hope they will keep swimming because what they leave behind in their path is a stream of the finest music and a live performance unlike anything you have ever been a part of. All I can say at this point is, Phish on!

Would you care for a snack? Remember that show, the one about nothing? Well it was very flattered in

Would you care for a snack?

Remember that show, the one about nothing? Well it was very flattered in Israel by a knock-off version whose name I cannot recall and is presently eluding my web searches. In it the Kramer character goes to a new bourekas bakery in his neighborhood (it all takes place in Tel Aviv) and is shocked to discover that the baker has disrupted the unwritten rule of fillings and shapes. For instance a potato boureka is always a rectangle, a triangle is always cheese, a pizza filling is a cylinder, while spinach filled resembles a pastry knot. One can picture the physical reaction of this character as he bites into a triangle shaped boureka and discovers that it is filled with spinach!

I was equally shocked to discover this past week that there are several different doughs that can be used to make this tasty little treats since all of the Israeli versions are made with the same flaky pastry dough. Much like the knish, there are regional variants in dough and filling across the Jewish communities of the near east and south eastern Europe. From Marrakesh to Salonika these small filled pies were popular additions to party menus. The word itself comes from the Turkish word for pie.

I decided to try a traditional Turkish recipe that Claudia Roden offers and filled them with a salmon, onion and cheese filling.

Salmon Cheese Bourekas

(makes 20+)

For the dough:

1/2 cup oil

1/2 cup water

1/2 tsp salt

2.5 cups of all purpose flour

Combine all ingredients in a mixer or bowl, knead until soft shiny and elastic. It can be used immediately and should used at room temperature.

For the filling:

1 cup shredded cooked salmon (mine was leftover from Shabbat dinner and season with sumac, salt and pepper)

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup Pecorino or Parmesan cheese (not the stuff in the green can!)

1 small onion diced

salt and pepper to taste

Mix all of the filling ingredients in a bowl, set aside.

Roll out dough on a board. Use no flour. This dough is very oily and will naturally lubricated the rolling pin and board. Once the dough is about 1/4 inch thick use a 3 inch biscuit cutter to cut rounds. Place about 1 tb spoon of filling in each one. Press the sides together until they stick. Place on a baking sheet. Knead dough scraps into a ball, roll out and repeat until all the dough is used.

When they are all filled arrange on a baking sheet. Brush with an egg wash or butter and bake for 30 minutes at 350.

Allow to cool slightly and enjoy.

Incluye Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal y Team Fortress 2. The Orange Box en PC también trae Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Half-Life 2: Lost Coast y Peggle Extreme.

Half-Life 2

El misterioso G-Man.

Nota: 9´6

Half-Life 2: Episode One

Nota: 7´5

Half-Life 2: Episode Two

Gráficamente llega al nivel de Half-Life 2: Episode Two.

Still Alive, un tema a recordar.

Lo Peor

Demasiado corto.

Nota: 9

Team Fortress 2

A continuación, algunos ejemplos.

Y más que podrás encontrar en YouTube.

Sonido

Dwie z nich, wyposażone dodatkowo w wysokiej rozdzielczości obiektywy, umożliwiły nawet precyzyjne uchwycenie mimiki Zidane’a. Powstały w ten sposób obraz portretuje bohatera, idola, sportowca znajdującego się wtedy u szczytu swojej kariery.

Zaprezentowana podczas wystawy Portret XXI wieku muzealna wersja dokumentu to dwukanałowa instalacja przypierająca odbiorcę do muru, budząca w nim skrajne odczucia, zadająca niewygodne pytania, skłaniająca do trudnych refleksji. Innowacyjność przekazu – zsynchronizowany, „dwuźródłowy” obraz i dźwięk robią oszałamiające wrażenie. Natarczywa wręcz koncentracja jedynie na osobie gracza budzi w widzu nieokreślony niepokój. W postawionym w roli obserwatora odbiorcy narasta w pewnym momencie uczucie podglądania, śledzenia, szpiegowania bohatera. Wrażenie to potęgują dodatkowo liczne zbliżenia twarzy Zidane’a.

Jedną z wystaw towarzyszących projektowi Zidane: a 21st century portrait stanowią prace jednego z najgenialniejszych twórców młodego polskiego pokolenia – Pawła Kruka. Podczas wystawy Portret XXI wieku zaprezentowane zostały cztery z jego prac, w tym słynny projekt Larger than life, w którym Kruk konstruuje postać Michaela Jordana.

By Matthew Doyle

Dr. Michael Eisenberg wrote the book on information literacy, literally. His most important contribution to the field of library and information science is the Big6 Information Problem Solving Process, a process model developed to teach information and technology skills. Eisenberg’s work centers on developing ways to teach information skills to students and research to learn more about the information skills of students. Eisenberg is part of an influential group of scholars that are partially responsible for the prominent position information literacy education now holds.

Professional Biography

Currently Michael Eisenberg is working as a professor at The Information School at the University of Washington. (Information School, 2009) Eisenberg was the founding dean of the Information School at the University of Washington, but stepped down due to health problems. (Information School, 2009) He turned a single degree in information science into a nationally recognized information science program during his tenure as dean. (Information School, 2009) Before coming to the University of Washington, Eisenberg was a professor and founder of the Information School at Syracuse. (Information School, 2009) Eisenberg is most well known for his books Information Literacy: Essential Skills for the Information Age (2004), Curriculum Iniative: An Agenda and Strategy for Library Media Programs (1988) and Information Problem-Solving: The Big6 Skills Approach to Library and Information Skills Instruction (1990). Most of Eisenberg’s work focuses on the development of quality information skills in school age students. Most recently Eisenberg has begun a large scale research project on young adult research habits. (Project Information Literacy, 2009)

Information Literacy and The Big 6

Eisenberg’s main area of scholarship is information literacy. His work focuses on developing students into information literate citizens capable of utilizing information and technology in the 21<sup>st</sup> information environment. Dr. Eisenberg developed the Big 6 as a problem solving strategy for information needs and an outline of necessary skills for developing information literate students. (Eisenberg, 1992) The Big 6 outlines the necessary steps for a student to overcome an information need. The steps of the Big 6 are;

Task definition,

Information seeking strategies,

Location and access,

Use of information,

Synthesis,

Evaluation. (Eisenberg, 1992)

The Big 6 is a process driven approach to solving an information problem or information seeking that incorporates critical thinking skills. Dr. Eisenberg has outlined an approach to teaching information literacy that can help develop students into sophisticated users of information that go beyond the memorization of facts and into critical analysis of information.

In step 1, task definition, students define their problem and their information need. (Eisenberg, 1992) This step teaches students to critically analyze their problem and decide what information they may need. In this stage they define the scope of their problem and develop an understanding of the areas they need to investigate. As students define the task they also begin to think about what sources may be appropriate for their information need. This is an excellent opportunity to use concept mapping and graphic organizers to help students organize their thoughts.

After defining the task student’s move on to step two, information seeking strategies. (Eisenberg, 1992) In information seeking strategies students begin to list the types of sources that will be the most helpful in solving their information problem and prioritizing these sources. The information seeking strategies stage is a rich opportunity to develop an understanding of appropriate sources and differentiating between various sources which is a key aspect of information literacy. Website evaluation exercises can be used in this stage to help students build skills at determining the authority of a site.

In step three, location and access, students begin to locate sources and gather information. (Eisenberg, 1992) Location and access builds an understanding of the various sources that can be used in a search and how to use both electronic and library information sources. The skills that are built in step three include using books, encyclopedias, search engines, advanced search features, databases, directories and other internet sources.

After information is gathered in step three student’s move onto step four; use of information. (Eisenberg, 1992) This is when students engage and extract information from the materials they have collected. In the use of information stage students begin to actively engage with the information they have gathered. Students extract main ideas, key facts and build in depth knowledge. They also learn how proper bibliographic skills in this stage through note taking and citation. This stage allows for deep and meaningful learning if used in the proper context.

After students use information they move on to stage five, synthesis. (Eisenberg, 1992) In the synthesis stage knowledge is organized for presentation. Students organize the comprehensive knowledge they have developed for presentation. Information is analyzed and appropriately presented in this stage. This leads students to the final stage, evaluation. (Eisenberg, 1992) In evaluation students critically evaluate their own work, looking for areas of strength and weakness. This helps them build strategy for future experiences.

The six steps of the Big 6 are very similar to the steps of Kuhlthau’s (1993) ISP. Eisenberg and Berkowitz (1992) found that the two process driven models were made up of the same basic steps. The only real difference between the two is that the ISP is based on formal research and the Big 6 is not. (Eisenberg and Berkowitz, 1992) Additionally, there is no real formulation stage in the Big 6 as can be seen in figure 1. (Wolf, 2003) Although not necessarily based on research, Wolf (2003) found a potential link between student use of the Big 6 and the development of metacognitive skills, that make students aware of their mental state and learning process. This deep understanding and self reflection is a key aspect of accomplishing higher level thinking and becoming an independent 21st century learner.

(Wolf, 2003)

Standards for the 21st Century Learner and the Big6

The Big 6 is widely used in school libraries as a method of teaching students to become information literate students. (Big 6, 2009) It has been adapted for younger children as the Super 3 and even used in college for graduate and undergraduate students. (Big 6, 2009) The Big 6 and its various manifestations have significant implications for 21st century schools. Although developed in 1990, the Big 6 Skills fit well into the American Association of School Libraries (AASL) Standards for the 21st Century Learner (2007).

The Big 6 can be used as a way to meet many of Standards for the 21st Century Learner. (AASL, 2007) In task initiation, the Big 6 addresses standard 1.1.3, “develop and refine a range of questions to frame the search for new understanding,” and standard 1.2.1, “display initiative and engagement by posing and investigating the answers beyond the collection of superficial facts.” (AASL, 2007, p.3) During task initiation students asking questions to engage with the information they find so that they can achieve a deep understanding of the subject. This is a clear shift away from the transmission model prominent in the 20th century in which superficial engagement and memorization played major roles.

In step 2, information seeking strategies, standard 1.1.4 “find, evaluate, and select appropriate sources to answer questions,” and 1.1.5 “evaluate information found in selected sources on the basis of accuracy, validity, appropriateness for needs, importance, and social and cultural context,” are addressed. (AASL, 2007, p.3) Here the Big 6 asks students to actively engage with information by critically thinking about sources and determining the appropriateness of sources. As technologies role in society continually increases, students need to have the skills to evaluate sources.

In location and access, students can learn skills that standards 1.1.8 “demonstrate mastery of technology tools for accessing information and pursuing inquiry” and 1.3.2 “seek divergent perspectives during information gathering and assessment,” address. (AASL, 2007, p.3) As these two standards illustrate, the Big 6 encourages the use of multiple sources when locating information. Students can become proficient searchers capable of locating materials through the use of the Big 6 in their problem solving assignments.

In use of information, standards 1.1.7 “make sense of information gathered from diverse sources by identifying misconceptions, main and supporting ideas, conflicting information, and point of view or bias”, 2.1.1 “apply critical thinking skills (analysis, synthesis, evaluation, organization) to information and knowledge,” and 1.3.3 “follow ethical and legal guidelines in gathering and using information.” (AASL, 2007, pp.3-4) The Big 6 makes students think about the information they gather. By moving away from passive accumulation of facts, the Big 6 encourages students to make sense of the information they gather and critically think about what it means. This active knowledge building is key in the Standards for the 21st Century Learner. (AASL, 2007) The Big 6 also discourages plagiarism, while encouraging proper citation.

In synthesis, standards 2.1.4 “use technology and other information tools to analyze and organize information” and 3.1.4 “use technology and other information tools to organize and display knowledge and understanding in ways that others can view, use, and assess,” are addressed. (AASL, 2007, pp. 4-5) The Big 6 asks students to not just regurgitate the information they have learned but create a final product that communicates the learning outcome, which is very conducive to technology use. Blogs, wiki’s, webpages, PowerPoint’s, Word documents and other final products all utilize technology and can be used with the Big 6. These are essential skills that are extremely useful in 21st century schools.

Lastly, in evaluation standards 3.4.1 “assess the processes by which learning was achieved in order to revise strategies and learn more effectively in the future” and 3.4.2 “assess the quality and effectiveness of the learning product” are addressed. (AASL, 2007, p.5) These methods of self reflection and assessment are key to the evaluation stage of the Big 6. Self assessment is also one of the four main categories of Standards for the 21st Century Learner. (AASL, 2007) By reflecting on outcomes students better understand how they learn and what they can do to improve future outcomes.

Basically, Dr. Eisenberg has provided schools with a great learning tool that meets many of the Standards for the 21st Century Learner (AASL, 2007), and can be adapted and modified to include even more. The Big 6 allows students to participate in authentic research (Gordon, 1999) that goes beyond the traditional library assignment. Information literacy has become far more complicated since the Big 6 was written but the model still applies to today’s information landscape. The Big 6 helps develop information skills, disposition, responsibilities and self assessment strategies. All four of these areas form the basis of the Standards for the 21st Century Learner. (AASL, 2007) The Big 6 also creates a great opportunity for collaboration between librarians and teachers. By creating the Big 6 Dr. Eisenberg has provided librarians and teachers with a great problem solving tool that incorporates technology and deep learning experiences and has the potential to help bring schools out of the industrial model of education and into the 21st century.

Implications for Guided Inquiry

The Big 6 is a tool that can be used very effectively to build Guided Inquiry assignments and lessons. What the Big 6 offers is a model for students to apply to information problems for the rest of their lives. This model can be effectively used as part of Guided Inquiry because it focuses on the active learning and not just passive information retrieval. This constructivist approach to learning centers on building knowledge through meaningful learning experiences. Incorporating information literacy into curriculum standards lessons, not just library skill training, allows for better learning opportunities and understanding. The Big 6 can easily be incorporated into any subject area of the curriculum and encourages collaboration between librarians with information skills and teachers with deep subject knowledge. The meaningful learning experience Guided Inquiry is based on is also in many ways the basis of the Big 6 approach.

A major part of the Big 6 is teaching information literacy skills in the context of an inquiry process, not just as part of an isolated lesson. Kuhlthau (2007) takes a concepts approach to information literacy that identifies locating, evaluating and using information as the three key areas of developing information literacy. (p. 80) In Guided Inquiry, these concepts are taught through the inquiry process. All three of these areas play a major role in the Big 6 approach which makes it an ideal problem solving process for Guided Inquiry units. When these information literacy concepts are utilized in Guided Inquiry units based on the Big 6 research process, meaningful knowledge building can take place.

The Big 6 is also very conducive to planned interventions which play an integral part in Guided Inquiry. Task definition is an excellent opportunity for concept mapping and using graphic organizers. During information seeking strategies students can complete exercises to evaluate sources. In evaluation students can use rubrics to evaluate their learning experience and final product. All of the steps offer at least some opportunity for teachers and librarians to use interventions that make students think critically about information and lead to deep and independent learning experiences. These metacognitive exercises can help students have more meaningful learning and understanding of themselves and the subject matter covered.

Conclusion

Eisenberg has provided librarians and teachers with an excellent tool for providing students with deep, meaningful, authentic learning experiences. The Big 6 emphasizes the importance of librarians in information literacy training and can encourage collaboration at many levels. It is also a great framework for bringing schools into the 21st century as it sets the goal of creating deep and meaningful learning experiences and making students critical and self sufficient thinkers. The Big 6 engages students to self reflect through metacognition, thus allowing students to become independent learners. The authentic learning experiences created through the use of the Big 6 complement the Guided Inquiry approach (Kuhlthau, 2007) and the Standards for the 21st Century Learner. (AASL, 2007)
