Sundry’s comfort cup…orange spice hot chocolate.

We’re actually getting some cold weather in the L.A. area this year. Up in Acton, it’s getting down to the mid-20s and they’re shivering in the 40s in the San Fernando Valley at night. I’m looking for comfort food and I’m looking for it warm.

I went to Pain Quotidien on Melrose a couple of weeks ago to mix, mingle and sample holiday lattes whipped up by champion barrista Heather Perry. The food and lattes were great, and it was nice to see people I’ve seen at other Got Milk events.

While I love a good coffee drink, it inspired me to treat myself to a fancy hot chocolate after dinner when I’m craving something sweet and not wanting to load up on calories. This looks way more decadent than it is.

Sundry’s Orange Spice Hot Chocolate

12 ounces 1% or nonfat milk

2-3 Tbs. Trader Joe’s Midnight Moo Chocolate Syrup. [25-40 calories...it's sugar-free, fat-free and salt-free. Your guess is as good as mine as to how they get it to taste so good.]

A few drops of orange extract, to taste

A few shakes of ground cinnamon, to taste

Light whipped cream

Directions: Heat the milk and chocolate in the microwave. Add orange extract and cinnamon. Stir well. Top with whipped cream and a little more cinnamon for color. [Add orange zest if you're having guests and want to really fancy it up!]

With nonfat milk 220-235 calories, with 1% milk 250-256 calories.

Curl up on the couch with a book, your sweetie, your pet or your kid. It’s a nice relaxing evening drink.

The Tres Leches Latte was my favorite.

Here’s the recipe for the latte listed above.

Tres Leches Latte

Ingredients:

8 oz. milk

2 tbsp. sweetened condensed milk

2 oz. fresh espresso or strong brewed coffee

4 oz. heavy whipping cream

2 tbsp. powdered sugar

To finish: whipped cream and maraschino cherry

Directions: Combine whipping cream and powdered sugar and whip until forms stiff peaks. In a mug, combine freshly brewed espresso and sweetened condensed milk and mix well. Steam milk and pour on espresso. Top with a scoop of fresh whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.

December 11, 2009

Dear readers,

All is well. The Internet is back, and even though my own laptop is nearing death (I swear it’s not a virus this time), I have hijacked my dad’s laptop to “do homework”.

I’ve been working hard on Got Milk?’s Battle For Milkquarious competition. It’s been exciting but at the same time…well, shall I just say this morning I had a nervous breakdown before French. But dealing with difficult people, unpreparedness, and legal issues is all practice for the future, right? And that keeps me afloat. That and the random bursts of glee I have in the middle of a shoot or during editing. Not much has turned out the way we planned, but I’m not too disappointed. If anything, I have disappointed by the lack of support I have gotten from some people and happily surprised by the generous amount of support from others.

Love,
Katherine

P.S. I can’t wait to go holiday shopping!

P.P.S. Celine Dion cut her son’s hair. I guess it’s time to update my old dictionary on accordingtograpes.

Then I went on to AKQA Nike team to localize the new Nike Running site to 9 countries I believe. Working with a team of QA ladies and a number of publishers not to mention the jolly Nike team, this was a great experience!

Now I’ve moved on to and literally moved to Diesel HQ in Italy where all the magic happens. I have started as one of the two PM:s here at the Digital Marketing Department in November 09, we will be working across Diesel, Diesel Black Gold, Diesel Helmets, Intimates, Fragrances, Miami Hotel and Rosso Wines brands. My main focus is working with growing digital channels such as Social Networks, In-Gaming on a broader scale and reworking Diesel Cult..whats next?

If you did not read part 1, find it here. Milk has been promoted as being good for just about every

If you did not read part 1, find it here.

Milk has been promoted as being good for just about every aspect of our health. The “Got Milk?” website claims milk’s health benefits include: reducing the risk osteoporosis, hypertension, and colon cancer; improving hair, skin and nail health; helps build muscle and strengthen bones; prevents cavities, improves sleep and prevents PMS symptoms. The National Dairy Council is even planning on spending up to $1 million dollars to keep chocolate milk in schools because “If there’s even a chance chocolate milk might get taken out of schools, that really can do more harm than good,” said Vivien Godfrey, CEO of the Milk Processor Education Program, the industry marketing group that developed the campaign with the National Dairy Council.

The problem with chocolate milk is it contains over 6 teaspoons of sugar in a 8 oz serving. Doesn’t sound like much? Well it can add up to an extra 5 pounds of body weight over the course of a school year. Just what we need when we are already facing an obesity epidemic in our children! Watch this ABC video and you’ll get a great visual of how much sugar that really is! “Chocolate Milk: Is the Calcium Worth the Sugar?”

Researcher has also brought up the point that the sugar in milk increases calcium excretion. Sugar, when ingested turns into acid. To buffer the acids created by the sugar in milk the body releases alkaline buggering substances (calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, etc.) to restore the alkalinity of the body fluids. Drinking milk creates a negative balance of calcium in the body. But that’s not exactly the story the American Dairy Association is telling us!

The American Dietetic Association and American Diabetic Association agree that sugar consumption in American is one of the 3 major causes of degenerative disease because sugar is devoid of minerals, vitamins, fiber, and has such a deteriorating effect on the endocrine system.

What about strawberry milk? It not only has the added sugar of chocolate milk but also has the coloring Red 40 which has been associated with hyperactivity in children and is being smartly phased out in the UK. We don’t seem to have a hyperactivity problem in the US, do we?

If milk isn’t so great, where else can we get our calcium?

It has been shown that calcium absorption from milk is lower (between 32 and 46%) than calcium absorption from vegetables like broccoli, bok choy, brussel sprouts, mustard greens and kale (between 51 and 64%). Dr. Robert Young, who is an expert on acid/alkaline balance, had this to say about green foods and bone health:

Now research from Tufts University suggests that green foods like spinach (along with other veggies and fruit) may be helping them build stronger bones, too. The reason involves the body’s acid/alkaline chemical balance. As you get older, your kidneys don’t excrete dietary and/or metabolic acids as efficiently, so bones release alkaline buffering substances, as well as calcium, to restore the alkaline design of the body fluids. When you eat green electron rich alkaline produce, your body creates sodium and potassium bicarbonate, two compounds that counteract the high acid levels – so calcium is more likely to stay put, keeping bones stronger and lowering your risk of fracture or dis-ease conditions such as osteoarthritis or osteoporosis.

In the words of researchers at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center:

“The high incidence of hip fracture in Western countries is caused by the cumulative effects on bone of the body’s chronic high acid load. This high acid load is the result of disproportionate consumption of animal (acid) foods relative to vegetable (alkaline) foods. The body adapts through dissolution of bone. Over decades, blood that is chronically too acidic induces osteoporosis.”

And the New York Times article goes on to say…

Too much endurance exercise, it appears, may reduce bone density.

Dr. Barry says that it’s possible, but not yet proved, that exercise that is too prolonged or intense may lead to excessive calcium loss through sweat. The body’s endocrine system may interpret this loss of calcium as serious enough to warrant leaching the mineral from bone.

Why is this?

Exercise, as anyone who’s felt the “burn” knows, creates acid – lactic acid. That acid must be buffered with minerals like calcium to maintain blood pH levels. This means the longer one exercises the more acid is produced and if the proper minerals are not replaced, over time bone density will decrease. By the way – Gatorade and other drinks are not effective because they contain sugar which just creates more acid. High intensity anaerobic exercise also can lead to weaker bones because it produces large amounts of acid (ever ran a 400 meters?) that the body must buffer.

Do these vegetables offer any other added benefits?

As the Harvard School of Public Health says:

“It’s hard to argue with the health benefits of a diet rich in vegetables and fruits: Lower blood pressure; reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, and probably some cancers; lower risk of eye and digestive problems; and a mellowing effect on blood sugar that can help keep appetite in check.”

Green foods contain chlorophyll, the benefits of have been talked about for years in natural health circles, is now proving to have cancer fighting benefits in research by Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University.

“A new study just published in the International Journal of Cancer examined the activity of chlorophyllin and found that, on a dose-by-dose basis, it was 10 times more potent at causing death of colon cancer cells than hydroxyurea, a chemotherapeutic drug commonly used in cancer treatment.”

Gives you something to think about, doesn’t it?

Ever wonder why you see “Got Milk?” Ads instead of advertisements for specific milk companies? Wonder why these industries choose to pool their money and advertise together instead of advertising for their specific brands?

Got Milk Ad

The milk industry is a great example of Perfect Competition market structure. Perfect Competition is an economic term used to describe an industry where there are a significant number of competitors, where no one brand owns a large share of market. The products are almost always homogeneous (i.e. Milk, Pork, Beef, Beans) and are relatively the same price, regardless of brand. Advertisements within perfect competition markets usually advertise for the product, and not for the specific brands. This is due to the fact of the small market share of all competitors and the homogeneous makeup of the product, making marketing efforts wasted if a company attempts to differentiate their product in any large scale way.

Outside of this specific advertisement, we know milk is within a perfect competition industry for a number of reasons. Outside of some very few examples (Lactaid – non lactose milk and Hood – light block bottle), milk is extremely homogeneous and therefore to the consumer, there is no reason how marketing could have a large influence on the product.
There are no cost’s to entry (a local dairy can start selling or a national company can also sell) and competition on product is not frequent. Advertising on Milk, and other products in Perfect Competition industries, is essentially done to increase overall demand for the product – which will in effect spillover to all of the homogeneous competitors.

L’agence Goodbye Silverstein and Partners y a pensé.

Ladies and gentlemen, the lovely and talented Stephanie Adams, Playboy’s Miss November 1992, would like to know: Have you got milk?

TURN-ONS:
Italian style, strawberries and cream, big cats, fast cars, Nintendo, kisses, and music.

Let’s just explore all that, shall we?

The ambitions section. First of all, yes, though Stephanie Adams was represented by Wilhelmina modeling agency at the time she posed for this centerfold, she was soon after picked up by Elite. She has not been a “successful actress,” but she is a widely known speaker and television personality, and a successful author. Ambition: we’ll call those all a big check.

Moving along to “turn-ons” — there is a well-known turn-on of Miss Adams’, one you might call her entire claim to fame, that is notably absent from this list. Oh, hey, famous bisexual author, what’s up with leaving sexy-ladytimes off the list? Just slip your mind?

Even though she became a spokesmodel for an LGBT fashion line and is still featured on magazine covers as well as a documentary on her life for Women’s Entertainment, Adams prefers to be known simply as “an author”.
Adams appeared in numerous Playboy videos, as well as a cameo appearance on the Late Show With David Letterman, and at some point was voted the “Best Lesbian Sex Symbol” in New York City. Soon after ending a long term relationship around that time, Adams was seen around town with notables such as LGBT comedian Marga Gomez and rock star Joan Jett. Adams had often said of her romantic life that she is a “Playboy trapped in a Playmate’s body.” — official website.

She has since said she is not just lesbian, and still dates guys. (She’s married men from time to time, too.) Hey, girl, if you’re open-minded enough to go for it, then get it where you can.

For years the animal milk industry has told us that milk is good for us. This was because one ingredient, calcium, is required by our bodies. What the milk industry has never explained is what all the rest of the ingredients in animal milk do to our bodies. Numerous studies, including ones conducted by the animal milk industry, have shown a direct link between consumption of animal milk products and a loss of bone density, not a strengthening of them. There goes the number one selling point, so what’s left? Maybe habit, and the investment of industry. Consumption of animal milk has also been linked to heart disease, cancers, obesity, allergies, diabetes, and other health conditions though, so like stopping smoking, it’s time we began asking ourselves why we are letting advertisements run our lives. Why are we doing this to our bodies, to the environment, and certainly to the animals themselves? Consumption of animal milk has been linked directly to breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer. Here’s a recent press release from the chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition. Smoking doesn’t kill you immediately; it’s a slow painful death. Despite this knowledge people find it difficult to quit because they’re addicted. Consumption of animal milk has also been linked to health risks and terminal disease, but in this case quitting is much easier: there’s no addiction to break, only habits. Now almost all markets have products such as almond milk, soy milk, rice milk, oat milk, or others that come in a wide variety of flavors (yes, chocolate too!) and can be used in coffee, on cereal, in recipes, in baking, in anything just like the animal milk we grew up with.

Our parents’ generation smoked, but our generation learned better. Our parents’ generation drank animal milk, but our generation learned better.

Sticky that is … in marketing speak. Sticky is a term we use to describe how memorable something is .. like a tag line. Just Do It. That was pretty sticky for the folks at Nike … or Got Milk? for the Dairy Board. On that note, and as a word of free advice … stop reusing the Got … anything, it has now officially become the most plagiarized tagline in advertising history and has begun to have a subliminally negative effect on those silly enough to try to reinvent it for actual marketing value. It’s fine on a funny T-shirt, but I don’t want to see any of you guys asking Got Dent? OK?

Some in the ad world are saying that the tag line is dead … they would be so far from wrong as to bring into question their place in the business .. and I’m talking about some heavyweights here … But just ask consumers today how sticky tag lines have “stuck” in their heads … for years in some cases. Like, “Nobody Doesn’t Like Sara Lee”, Reach Out and Touch Somebody” or “Put a Tiger in Your Tank” … I could go on for hours. The point is that a tagline is the second most important piece of brand identity, behind your logo or company name and should be given an appropriate place in your thought process.

A tagline is a unique cluster of words that conveys a thought about your brand and how people should feel about you and your company. It is essential in the compressed, byte-sized world we live in … you have mere seconds sometimes to sink your message into grey matter. In the words of Master Po as he taught young Caine in Kung Fu … Choose wisely. Choose wisely, or find a good copy writer, because coming up with “There are some things money can’t buy. For everything else, there’s MasterCard” is no simple task.

Be wary of punctuation in a tag line … stay away especially from exclamation points and question marks. Use iteration when possible, they help the “sticky” factor … Lulu’s Dim Sum and Then Some, for instance. How about … Big Al’s Collision … “Fender bent, a door with a dent … When we’re done, you won’t know where it went” or Tom’s AutoBody … “We’ll make you forget you ever had an accident”.

Look, the key here is to come up with something that makes somebody feel a certain way about your brand … the way YOU want them to feel about your brand actually. So test it on a few people before you hang it on the wall. Get some feedback and trust what you hear. Don’t get attached to something because you wrote it. There is no room for ego in tag line writing, it must resonate with the recipient, be “sticky” enough for them to remember and convey your brand message effectively … if it doesn’t do all that? … Just Don’t Do It.

Of course, that’s just my opinion … I could be wrong.

Sorry I’m so late on this Agency Wednesday. I had a Star Wars book day at the Hastings library and was so worn out from all the activities that I knocked the hell out early! Anyway, Jeff Goodby of Goodby, Silverstein, and Partners (Got Milk?, Hyundai, NBA “Only One”, Sprint) came to speak at Art Center today. A former board member of the school, he brought some insight in his company’s philosophy as well as some of his own personal anecdotes.

His most memorable today, being when he met the legendary David Ogilvy of Ogilvy & Mather (made famous by the “Man in the Hathaway shirt” campaign, Kraft, and Mattel) when he used to work at O&M. Ogilvy inquired how many hours he wrote each day. In which Goodby replied (as any good junior employee copywriter should at the time)–eight to nine hours. Ogilvy gawked at his response stating that he should be writing for two to three hours each day; the rest of the time finding things to write about.

So on that note, here are some particulars from the GSP library to take up some of that other six hours. Enjoy!

Species Name: Lookatmeicus Lackingsubtleness

There’s something inherently irritating about people who have any kind of stickers on their cars. You’re not clever, nobody cares that your kid was student of the month, and I’m really sorry that Lupe Gonzales died at the ripe age of 21, but that doesn’t mean your car needs to be a mobile gravestone for them. Sure, if you want to support a candidate for President, throw a sticker on your car, but for god’s sake when it’s two years after the election, it’s time to remove the goddamn thing. There are so many obnoxious car stickers out there, I thought it would make more sense to share examples of these car tattoo’s to make you understand why these people need to be thinned from the herd.

In a world devoid of car stickers, we would be spared from ever having to see these dipshits on the road:
