No supe qué responder.

No pude evitar reirme.

Before I was able to get back to Michael, the news regarding his tragic passing broke.

Hicimos buenos trabajos. Michael me hizo jurar secretismo aquellos días.

Me preguntó si tenía algun consejo.

Now there are two names you don’t often see in a sentence together. But according to TMZ and Gotham Chopra, Michael Jackson was trying to find a way to contact Kim Jung Il! Hmm, seems MJ was thinking if he could teach the Dear Leader to moonwalk or something, he might be able to talk him into pardoning the two American journalists. You remember them, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, the reporters who were sentenced to 12 years hard labor after being caught “spying” on the North Korean border. Anywho Michael had contacted Chopra (a few months before his death) to see if he could help in convincing North Korea’s leader to release the reporters. Michael thought Kim Jong Il might be a fan of his because “You know, he wears jackets like mine.” Bless, that would have been bigger than his comeback tour. Geez, they could have recorded a duet together…. imagine, the two “Kings of Pop”. And don’t get me started on the music video!

Gotham Chopra (of Liquid Comics, and how I remember him and Laura Ling, a former Channel One news anchor) shared a touching and unheard posthumous story about Michael Jackson empathizing for Laura Ling and Euna Lee, two American journalists who were detained in North Korea and currently prisoned in a hard labor camp.

Understandable, as my heart seems to also go out to people who are away from their families, and to children who are away from their parents. Michael’s demise meant so much to many, but reading this article was the first time his death touched me in the past couple weeks. I feel for those who are without family, and also feel for those who know what I’m feeling.

Below is an excerpt from Chopra’s article, “Michael Jackson and Kim Jong Il”. Read the entire article here.

“The last time I spoke to my friend Michael Jackson was about a month ago, three weeks before his shocking death. Since then, they have been imprisoned, had very little contact with their families or western officials …. Michael had read some of the details regarding Laura and Euna’s predicament. As was often the case with him and global events he read about – from famine in Africa to victims of natural disasters in far off countries, to orphans created by wars – he felt a deep sense of empathy for Laura and Euna. When I shared with him that Euna had a four-year-old daughter, he was even more anguished….”

There’s a special welcoming committee for celebrities in heaven.

Johnny Carson was there on June 23rd, 2009 when Ed McMahon entered the Pearly Gates. He welcomed him and asked him to go golfing after he got settled in with God and got caught up with his long lost relatives. They set up a tee time for Friday morning, June 27th. When they met up at the PGGC (Pearly Gates Golf Course), Johnny just stood there, leaning on his club, arms folded, shaking his head, with that grin on his face, looking Ed square in the eyes. Ed thought Johnny was going to say something like, “It’s good to see you old friend, it’s been way too long”. But no. Johnny’s words were typical Johnny. “Ed, you stupid fool! You couldn’t have chosen a worse week to die. People are going to be saying for years, “Who were those other two celebrities that died the same week as Michael Jackson?” They both laughed, embraced, and teed off at #1.

And together, Johnny and Ed next welcomed Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson. Farrah seemed to only have about 15 minutes of fame for her final demise, which is sad. At least she had that special on a few weeks back which has re-aired several times. She had her time with us, her fans.

Billy Mays, best known for his hawking of products such as Orange Glo and Oxyclean, also passed away this morning. Many complained of his voice when it came on TV. He was loud, annoying, but hey, he sold product. That’s the point of being a Pitchman. He was only 50 also, much too young.

I can already see a Saturday Night Live skit coming. Fodder for sure, but sad for the celebrity world

All were important icons in our lives. They all made a difference.

I grew up with Michael Jackson. No, not literally, but he and his family were ever present in my days spent as a child, and well into my adult life. What is so powerful about his music, is that it has transcended time and generations. It’s pretty cool to be a 54 year old mom, and when a Michael Jackson song comes on the radio with your 18 year old daughter, you’re both singing along, and actually know all the words, at least to the chorus. My three male grandchildren wouldn’t even think of being so uncool to sing along with Grandma, but I know they know the songs and the lyrics.

I found the following two links via a friend on Facebook which may or may not change your mind about some of the media blitz that has been circulating. What stuck out most was wondering if people truly remember when Michael was acquitted of child molestation charges, or was it simply the fact that he was accused, more than once, which makes him outright guilty in many mind? Do we have that much doubt in our judicial system that those even remotely accused of molesting children, are always guilty, no matter what a judge and jury says? Is there always that element of doubt lingering in our minds? The media and public imprisoned him for life. The verdict might as well have been guilty, because apparently you can’t be forgiven of such a crime in this world, no matter what.

Me? What do I think? Really doesn’t matter, but since you asked…..
I believe that Michael was obviously haunted by something in his youth. His life was odd from the beginning, in that he was famous from a very early age. Some people can handle it in a way most would call “normal”, and some people can’t. In a society that claims to be so diverse and accepting of differences, we certainly tend to jump up someones craw when they go against the norm, of what WE* would do.

I believe Michael just wanted that raw, pure friendship of youth. I remember friends from my childhood that weren’t ever judgmental, could laugh at my guffaws and their own, without worry or repercussions. Why wouldn’t we want to latch on to those moments in life, and recapture our youth? He had younger friends, he enjoyed the laughter and pureness of children. So what? Yes, it’s unfortunate that some may have misconstrued his relationships, but if I were to bet my life savings, I would venture that adults with ulterior motives were behind the accusations, and not the children. They told their innocent stories, and then the masses swarmed with a vengeance. The greed was overpowering.

We live in a society where everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I praise God each and everyday that I live in America for that and many other reasons. Read the articles I’ve linked below. It just may change your mind, or not. That’s totally up to you. Or continue to read the tabloids. They suck you in, and that’s right where they want you, no matter what the cost. As long as you buy and read, that’s all that matters to them.

Peace and Love,

Think about all of the information that you never would’ve known had someone not put their safety or life at risk. Think about how many scandals have been uncovered by investigative reporters and how the truth obtained changed the world. Heck, a U.S. president resigned due to the investigative work of reporters at The Washington Post.

There’s no doubt that journalists play a major role in the way the world is viewed and shaped. Many of these media professionals are thanked. However, some might consider their work tactics a nuisance, which is where the level of appreciation could fall by the wayside.

Bracing the headlines over the past few weeks has been the unfortunate news of Roxana Saberi, Euna Lee, Laura Ling and Esha Momeni who were jailed in Iran and North Korea while collecting data for news stories, or academic research.

Roxana Saberi, who has been jailed in Iran since January, was recently convicted of espionage by an Iranian court and sentenced to eight years in prison. On Tuesday, she began a hunger strike (today is Sunday) and sources say that she has (obviously) become very weak. I’m not in the U.S., so I can’t watch the coverage of her status, but based on what I’m finding online, this looks like big news back home.

Then last month, Euna Lee and Laura Ling from Current TV were arrested on the China/North Korea boarder while working on a story about women seeking refuge in China from North Korea’s communist rule. One witness says that the reporters were on the China side of the boarder when the arrest occurred, but there hasn’t been much development on this situation due to the lack of communication that the U.S. has with North Korea. A Swedish Ambassador is doing the mediating and sadly, it doesn’t sound like Lee and Ling are heading home anytime soon. Candlelight vigils for these two women will be held in both Sacramento and San Francisco, California early next week.

On October 15, 2008, Esha Momeni, a Iranian-American graduate student from my alma mater, California State University, Northridge, was working on her thesis in Iran when she was stopped by police for allegedly passing a vehicle illegally. Her case is confusing because technically, she’s not a journalist. Her study at CSUN is in Mass Communications within the School of Journalism and the focus of her research is on Iranian feminism.

Esha was finally released from jail in November on $200,000 bail, but since, her passport has been denied, so she’s unable to leave the country. The Bull Magazine, a publication by students at Pierce College in the San Fernando Valley, interviewed CSUN faculty and others for a video about Esha’s situation. Click here to watch. And to sign a petition for her immediate release, click here.

China doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to tolerance toward media professionals, so my friends often question some of the ideas that I have for stories. What has happened to these ladies could happen to anyone. Just yesterday, I read an article by Gotham Chopra where he talks about his cross with avoiding arrest in a “rouge nation.” Some journalists aren’t always so lucky.

Keep these women in your thoughts and don’t ever take your freedom of speech (if you’re reading this in a country that allows freedom of speech) for granted.

***********UPDATED 5/16/09***********

Great news for Roxana Saberi last week. She was released from an Iranian prison with a suspended two-year term and a five-year ban on practicing journalism in Iran. Fair enough! Her two-week hunger strike might have had something to do with this, but in any case, it’s great to see that she’s alive and “free.”

I’m sure that she has book deals and Lifetime made for TV movie pitches flying at her left and right. She says that she needs time before speaking about the whirl wind she experienced over the past months. Read the full report here.

In North Korea, Laura Ling and Euna Lee will be put on trial on June 4th. If convicted on charges of espionage, they could be looking at up to 10 years in prison.

Al Gore has taken a step forward in speaking out for the release of the two women. This isn’t the first time that North Korea has used the capture of U.S. citizens as possible bargaining tools. Read the full report here.

***********UPDATED 8/4/09***********

After a visit from former U.S. President Bill Clinton earlier today, North Korean leader, Kim Jong-Ill, has pardoned Laura Ling and Euna Lee for illegally entering the country back in March. In June, the two Current TV journalists were sentenced to 12 years of hard labor for entering North Korea illegally. A few days ago, Lisa Ling, Laura Ling’s older sister who is also a journalist, made a statement that during a recent phone conversation her younger sister admitted that they had broke law. Laura Ling said that the only way they would ever be released by N. Korea was if amnesty was sought and that’s exactly what was accomplished by President Clinton today.

After nearly a year, the Iranian government has finally allowed Esha Momeni to leave the country and return to the United States. A student from California State University, Northridge interviewed Momeni about her experience and the four part video can be viewed on YouTube.

From Wired:

With Hollywood hitting up comic books for blockbusters, a new comics publisher is looking to India for ideas. “The world is increasingly realizing that India is a source for creativity and great ideas, not just a back office to execute them more cheaply,” said Gotham Chopra, part of the management team at Los Angeles-based Liquid Comics.

One of the first projects for the publisher will be bringing its Ramayan 3392 AD (pictured) – a colorful, 21st-century re-imagining of Indian literary epic the Ramayana – to movie theaters. Liquid has teamed up with Mandalay Pictures and 300 producer Mark Canton for the film, which has a planned release date of 2011.

Chopra talked with Wired.com about Liquid’s birth, a new wave of Indian comics artists and the challenge of bringing an ancient Sanskrit epic to the silver screen.

Wired.com: Condensing the Ramayana into a comic book must have been hard, but condensing it into a film seems harder. What do you think about the challenge, and how do you think it will do with audiences unfamiliar with the venerable narrative’s mythology?

Gotham Chopra: Can you say, “Trilogy?” Seriously, this is something we’ve talked about at length even in relation to the original comic series. Obviously, our goal is to create a narrative structure that doesn’t require a familiarity with the original story. That’s an important note, not only so that people who have never heard of Ramayan can enjoy it, but also so those who are familiar with it are not offended by the film.

Michelle Haimoff

Posted December 3, 2008 | 10:10 AM (EST) , The Huffington Post

I recently wrote an article entitled “Deepak Chopra on Mumbai: Too Controversial for CNN?” about Chopra’s November 26th interview on CNN, which CNN had possibly edited. Within a week of the interview, Dorothy Rabinowitz of the Wall Street Journal wrote an article entitled “Deepak Blames America,” and Elisabeth Hasselbeck of The View called him “Glitter glasses whatshisface” and mumbled “Go light a bowl of incense.” On December 2nd, I interviewed Chopra by phone and gave him the opportunity to speak candidly about censorship in the media, the new patriotism, and latent anti-Muslim racism in the United States. The unedited podcast of the interview can be heard at http://michellehaimoff.podomatic.com/.

Chopra started off by clarifying what happened in the CNN interview. “The interview actually went on for another ten minutes when I was doing it but it was a tape. So it wasn’t a live interview. It was taped because I had just finished Larry King and I had to go somewhere. So the actual interview was ten minutes longer than what you saw. Even the online interview version that you saw did not have the total interview because in my interview I talked about — I take the vow (of non-violence), etc, etc — I talk about a lot of things which were not there on the transcript.”

As far as what was cut, he says, “I spoke about how we are funding both sides of the conflict through our military-industrial complex, which is a huge industry and we fund it through our petrodollars, through the Saudis who then buy weapons from all over the world, but including from us. And these weapons end up in the hands of terrorists as well, so willy-nilly we are participating in the funding on both sides.”

In the interview, he mentions petrol dollars going to Saudi Arabia through Pakistan. He explains: “Saudi Arabia funds, among other things, the Mujahidin, Taliban and ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence). So our dollars end up funding these terrorists. And if you are aware of the history, at one time we were funding these people directly — you know, Taliban, ISI, Mujahidin. It started with the Mujahidin which became the Taliban, which are in turn supported by ISI, which is independent of the Pakistan government, even though it’s part of the Pakistan body, you know, they don’t have direct control over it. And ISI is well known to enlist the help of Taliban Mujahidin and also give them help. In fact, when we went to Afghanistan and wanted to go after the terrorists we would seek the help of Pakistan government who would pass on information to ISI, who then passes it on to the terrorist groups. So, in fact, instead of helping us, they were basically abetting and co-conspiring with the terrorists.”

“It’s a very complex situation.” He says. “What I’ve discovered is that, if you start to tell the truth in that atmosphere that — are you recording this?”

“Yes.” I say.

“If you start to tell the truth or even want to know the truth, the atmosphere that has been created in the last eight years in the Bush administration and also with the patriot act and so on… if you start to even look in that direction in the last eight years it has become extremely dangerous because you, first of all, are accused of not being patriotic. You probably want to see the US government overthrown and you are a traitor. I’ve got some really good friends at CNN and other places… The good people are scared. They’ve been scared. It’s very different to snap out of that mindset.”

Chopra hopes that the Obama presidency will encourage freedom of speech, honesty and integrity, and that the media will no longer view critical citizenry as treasonous.

“I have lived more years in this country than I have lived in India. My children are born here. They’re citizens of this country as much as Obama is. And I get hate mail from tons of people, hundreds of people everyday saying, ‘You should go back to India. You’re a traitor. You’re this or that.’ It’s an atmosphere that has been created for eight years. It does a great disservice in the United States to have that atmosphere. And I’m just feeling right now that opportunity to really test if we can speak our truth and not be afraid. Otherwise we might as well live in the former USSR or in China or something. Even in India you can speak your truth and not have to be afraid of being accused of these things by the government or by special interest groups.”

But why would a network like CNN censor itself for fear of seeming unpatriotic? What are they afraid of?

“Michelle, we have to be very careful that we don’t assume that,” he said. “That CNN is afraid. Then we’d be doing the same thing that other people do — just making assumptions. My perception is that journalists at large are not comfortable by raising sensitive issues… News is sold as a commodity these days and the more sensational it is, the better it is.”

He later continued: “I just want to clarify one thing. I don’t want to imply that the reason that the interview was cut off suddenly was because of some policy decision. If anything, CNN is more open than anybody else.” For example, he says, it could have been a segment time issue.

Does he really think that CNN is more open than anyone else?

“I think CNN definitely. FOX and the Wall Street Journal are cheerleaders for the old paradigm. They’re cheerleaders for right wing extremism and right wing fundamentalism… in a sense two institutions that do more disservice to our country than anybody else.”

Chopra’s understanding of Islamic extremists provides a much-needed glimpse at where these fundamentalists are coming from, but does the violence stem from a culture war or are terrorists settling the score for a perceived crime?

“Here is my analysis of it.” He said. “There are 1.8 billion Muslims in the world. That’s about 25% of the world’s population. By no means are the majority of these people violent or fundamentalists either.”

Chopra, who is a senior scientist at Gallup, was part of a team that conducted a poll of 600 million Muslims (about half of the Muslim population of the world). Countries polled included Pakistan, Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Iran and Saudi Arabia. What he concluded in the poll is that the vast majority (92-95%) of Muslims are moderates, and they admire the West for their entrepreneurship, business and modernism. A small minority (<5%) are extremists, and of that we don’t know how many are actual terrorists. His guess is very few.

Based on the survey, the cause of terrorism is “a rage that comes from humiliation, lack of respect, and also from factors that we are unaware of, generally uneducated about.”

He cites Wikipedia estimates of the number of people that have died in Iraq since the war, ranging from 400,000 to over a million. “When we initiated the war on Iraq we forget to remind ourselves that the Iraqis had nothing to do with 9/11. Nothing to do with 9/11. We also know that the Iraqis had no weapons of mass destruction. We now say that Saddam Hussein was a mass murderer. That he used torture and that he needed to be out. We should remind ourselves that we knew this a long time ago and we have used him as our ally for a long time. He was in the senior Bush administration before the first war. You know, much before that… And then we decided to make him our enemy. Nothing changed. He was definitely a mass murderer. He was a torturer. When we did the Shock and Awe campaign. The Shock and Awe. Listen to the words. We’re bombing Baghdad and many parts of the country we’re calling it the Shock and Awe campaign.”

“FOX News actually produced the Shock and Awe campaign as a theatrical production. They hired a musical director. They had symphonic music. And when you saw it on TV it was a glorious, glorious attempt to liberate the people of Iraq. It’s easy for a person sitting in a plane 32,000 feet above sea level to press a button. When he looks at the map he presses a button. And you know, we’re seeing it on screens. We’re calling it Shock and Awe and we hear this beautiful music – sounds almost like Mozart – while this is happening, while on the ground there are grizzly scenes which we don’t see in the media, of people being mutilated. People in the throes of death. Bodies all over the place. And gruesome scenes the American public is totally unaware of, but people in the Muslim world are very aware of… We are very self-absorbed.”

The deaths that appear in our papers are Western deaths. The women, children and non-Jihadis that die are not part of our conversation.

“I think this kind of mentality that demeans the life of somebody who is perhaps brown, Muslim, inferior, is not that important, but it enlists huge amounts of rage. It takes some of the moderates and certainly makes them fundamentalists. It takes some of the fundamentalists and certainly makes them terrorists.”

“Imagine you’re on the streets of Baghdad you see planes going up in the sky. You hear in the news this is Shock and Awe and bombs are falling your relatives are killed. Your brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, parents are killed and it’s called Shock and Awe. Would you not call that terrorism? Just because the person is in uniform and pressing a button and is calling it shock and awe and doing it to music, is that any worse than a beheading? It’s worse because you’re not aware of the damage that’s being done.”

Chopra and his son, Gotham, are involved in Chat the Planet, an organization that encouraged dialogue between New York-based American children and Iraqi children before the Iraq War about ways to prevent the war from taking place. After the US bombed Iraq, the Chopras couldn’t find many of the kids who were involved in the project because some had died, while others had lost a parent, brother or sister. “This is the kind of thing that enlists rage in that world,” Chopra said.

“Despite that, there are millions of Muslims that admire the US, that would love to have economic partnerships with the US. Would love to learn business leadership skills. Would love to know what makes an entrepreneur. You know, the vast majority of people in the world of any religion want a decent life want to send their kids to school and want to be at peace. And the terrorists are as much a threat to these people as to anyone else.”

Chopra’s deeper understanding of the reasons for terrorism has been misconstrued of late, most notably in the Wall Street Journal’s “Deepak Blames America” article.

“I didn’t blame America,” Chopra says and then elaborates that placing blame is complex and that Pakistan is suffering because of the people that don’t want Pakistan to have a relationship with a nuclear-armed India. “The worst thing India could have done is to have a nuclear deal and to be part of a nuclear club… Why are we selectively choosing to have nuclear deals and making the rest of the world feel unsafe?”

“We have a very self-righteous attitude towards the rest of the world. We have no understanding of how these violent ideologies are born. We want to just go to war and kill the terrorists. Well, the bad news is you can kill as many terrorists as you want, but you cannot kill terrorism. In order to kill terrorism it’s gonna have to be a 50-year Marshall Plan to not build war torn cities, but to build ideas. To rebuild violence torn minds. To educate them, to help them, to cooperate with them, to create economic partnerships so that the rage disappears, and to understand them. There are very simple rules for having a dialogue. You respect your enemy. You talk to them with the attitude, ‘Yes. We understand that you also have injustice and we also feel injustice. Can we have a room here for forgiveness on both sides? Can we refrain from belligerence?’ The more belligerent we get, the more belligerent the radicals get.”

Chopra says that, according to Rabinowitz, “I’m a purveyor of aromatherapy, enemas, I say happy thoughts make people happy.” He touches on Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s comment that he should “go light some incense.” He takes personally when the media dismisses thousands of years of wisdom and traditions, and is patient in explaining that aromatherapy and incense work through neuro-associative conditioning. If anyone bothered to ask, he would mention that he is a neuro-endocrinologist and that everything he studies has a medical basis. “If you really examine this, this is racism. This is bigotry. This is hatred. This is prejudice. And this is total lack of knowledge of another person’s culture.” You can almost hear him rolling his eyes when he says, “The only time I’ve prescribed enemas is when somebody has constipation.”

So what is the nature of his expertise?

“What’s an expert? Who’s an expert?” he asks. “I have not been indoctrinated by the US government to a particular point of view.” But he has the unique perspective of someone with emotional ties to the East and the West. His inner circle includes a CIA agent, his son, Gotham, a former a war correspondent in war torn regions (“He sat across the table with Taliban leaders and had mangoes with them”), and the Muslims that comprise his world (“I come from a culture where Hindus and Muslims for the most part live peacefully”).

Chopra wants us to understand about Muslims that which we don’t yet understand — that they have a value system but that it’s different than ours. In the Gallup Poll Chopra helped design, Muslims talk about taking care of the elderly and the poor. Despite the terrorism, the crime rate of Saudi Arabia and most Arab countries is much lower than that of LA or DC. Perhaps taking care of the elderly and the poor helps keep crime rates so low.

After Rabinowitz’s scathing Journal piece, he received a number of invitations from the conservative talk show circuit, but when he appeared on Hannity and Colmes, Hannity shot him down for comparing a recent Scientific American article about cancer to terrorism. Evidently, when we treat cancer too aggressively, cancer cells hijack normal cells and make them co-conspirators in spreading the cancer. “Do you see an analogy there?” he said. To him, the collateral damage of the war on terror has caused some people to get hijacked by terrorists to become co-conspirators in spreading the terrorism.

Bill O’Reilly asked him to come on The O’Reilly Factor too. “I will appear on your show on two conditions,” he emailed O’Reilly. “Number one: You will not raise the volume of your voice. And number two: You will not interrupt me. And I will not raise the volume of my voice and I will not interrupt you.” O’Reilly has yet to reply.

“A terrorist has an ideology.” He says. “That ideology is savage. It’s brutal. It’s primitive. It is the worst ideology you can imagine because it’s ancient. It’s not relevant to our normal times. When you kill a terrorist you do not kill the ideology.”

He repeats twice that on Hannity the other night, former Secretary of Defense William Cohen quoted Donald Rumsfeld as saying, “Are we creating more terrorists than we are killing?”

The US has the best weapons and intelligence in the world and yet we can’t seem to eliminate terrorism. According to Chopra, this is because we have yet to understand it in its historical, economic and psychological contexts. Economically, the conditions in Pakistan are so abysmal that the poor flock to the Mujahid simply so they can eat. Psychologically, young boys in ghettos in Europe turn to terrorism because they have been marginalized by racism. When one has no sense of identity one may seek identity by joining a radical group.

“Marginalized people get radicalized.” Chopra says. “When you have marginalized people living in ghettos who feel humiliated and enraged, when you have poor people living in third world countries and you have people who have no sense of identity, these marginalized people get radicalized by special interest groups which happen to be the terrorists. You cannot get rid of these terrorists without getting the help of the majority of the Muslims in the world who are peaceful people. They’re like anybody else. We know that from our own surveys. You can’t say that a quarter of the world’s population is insane and Jihadist. The terrorists are insane and Jihadist. You can not get rid of an idea… The only way ideas can be given up is if you educate people, if you help people, if you have a conversation with people and if you recognize that other people have a sense of perceived injustice. We don’t recognize even that there is a sense of injustice in these people. We also have an ally like Saudi Arabia, and we fund money to Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is controlled by very few people who live a very opulent lifestyle. It is to their advantage to channel money to these terrorists and to divert it from the gross inequities that exist in their own countries. Spend a little money and divert and other people are killed and you’re getting money from the US anyway, who’s your ally. And they will be your ally as long as it is to the US’s advantage.”

“Why don’t we remember? We have such short memories that Saddam Hussein was a CIA sponsored thug that our CIA brought out of exile, put into power after a coup in Iraq. Then George Bush Sr. flooded billions of dollars into Iraq in his support, all the while knowing full well about his torture chambers and rape rooms. It didn’t bother us because the US policymakers thought they could use him to their advantage. When they found out not, now he suddenly becomes this evil person which he was all along.”

“A state official was once asked, ‘How do you abandon your friends so easily?’ And he answered, ‘We don’t have friends. We have interests.’”

So where are all the Islamic moderates? They don’t seem to be getting much airtime these days. Perhaps that’s because their voices are too quiet, but perhaps it’s because we don’t want to hear them.

“One of the things we have to do now is ask the moderates to speak out,” Chopra says. “I think one of the reasons the moderates don’t speak too much is that they’re defensive. They’re defensive of things they did not do but they’re being at least perceived as having participated in it. This is the attitude of people that feel attacked and judged against. And we do nothing to prevent that from happening. If we were actually to reach out to the moderates and say, ‘You have nothing to be defensive about. You don’t have anything to be guilty about. We are not judging or humiliating you. Or demeaning you.’ When is the last time we said to the moderate Islamic world? ‘We want your help?’ We said it belligerently when we said, ‘Either you’re with us or you’re against us.’”

One of the comments on “Deepak Chopra on Mumbai: Too Controversial for CNN?” was the suggestion that, just as we wear red ribbons to support AIDS awareness and pink ribbons for breast cancer awareness, we should wear a ribbon to show condemnation for acts of terrorism and see Muslims wear it openly. Would something like this be an effective way for Muslims to demonstrate their stance against terrorism?

“I think something like this would be symbolic for sure.” Chopra said, but then quickly adds, “It would not get to the root cause that’s contextual and relational. You’re not gonna solve this the day after tomorrow. If you really want to solve this we have to work at it for 50 years.”

On Friday, The Wall Street Journal is printing versions of letters from Deepak and Gotham Chopra responding to the Rabinowitz article. Here are advanced, unedited versions of the letters from the Chopras:

In an interview with thequarterbin, acclaimed comics writer Ron Marz discusses his approach to adapting Deepak Chopra’s Beyond, a sci-fi thriller about an American businessman in India on a desperate – and interdimensional – search for his wife.

In addition to Ron’s groundbreaking work on Silver Surfer for Marvel, Green Lantern for DC, and Samurai: Heaven and Earth for Dark Horse, he has edited Devi, The Sadhu, and Ramayan Reloaded, and continues to be a major figure in the development of our Shakti line. Here’s an excerpt of what Ron had to say about his adaptation of Beyond:

And with BEYOND you’re adapting a Deepak Chopra story?

Yeah, it’s actually a screenplay Deepak wrote, so I’m translating the screenplay into the comic format. It’s really a matter of preserving as much as I can of what’s there, and deciding on what parts we’re going to trim back on a little bit to fit everything into the comic. For the most part we’ve been able to get all the main points in, it’s just some of the details that we don’t have room for in a 22-page comic. So far I’m really happy with the way it’s come out.

I’ve read through the advance copy and one of the things I was curious about was how much of your own style and voice are you able to put into BEYOND since it is an adaptation?

Truthfully, when I took on the gig I spoke to Gotham about it. Deepak is his dad, and I wanted to make sure that I was as faithful to the material as I could be. I said to Gotham, “Look, I feel like my job is to faithfully translate what your dad wrote.” Gotham’s viewpoint was to do what I had to do to make it work as a comic story. So I’m probably being more faithful to the material than even they expected me to be.
I’m bringing to it more of my visual style than I am the dialogue because I’m trying to preserve as much of Deepak’s dialogue as possible. That’s what my job is. I’m here to serve his story, not the other way around.

“Living on the inside of the New Age world as I have done has given me a front row seat to what truly makes a profit. I mean prophet. Destiny, Serenity, and Tranquility are not just the names of my three favorite exotic dancers in Las Vegas. They are states of awareness. Guru Pitka taught me that as well.”—Gotham Chopra
Growing up as Deepak Chopra’s son must have been a spiritually rich experience for Gotham Chopra, Virgin Comics’ Editor-In-Chief. But we were all stunned to learn that Deepak is not in fact Gotham’s spiritual guiding light. Guru Pitka, the chief rival of Deepak Chopra, is the man that has been leading Gotham on his life-long spiritual journey.

A few weeks ago, someone forwarded me a link to a Nick Marino’s and Neal Shyam’s audioshocker podcast in which, amongst other things, they shared their thoughts on some of our books. At best, their reviews could be described as a mixed bag. That said, there was also clearly an intrigue around some of what we were doing and that caught my attention. So I decided to do what any big deal entertainment executive would do, I commented on their site and requested that they guys have me on their show to answer their questions. The good guys that they are, Neal and Nick invited me in to their show and the following link will take you right into our candid conversation about all things Virgin Comics.

Cutting to the chase, the gist of the interview centers on the business of comics and the huge challenges that all of the publishers are facing. In this brave new digital world, selling comics at the comic shop isn’t an easy task and yet it remains the most critical entry point for any publisher trying to establish a real presence in the industry. Sure you can come up with all sorts of dotcomics and slick up your trades for the mass market but first and foremost you have to charm the comic geeks if you hope to survive. In a world crowded by Superheros and Super-Heros, that’s no easy task. And yet, here we are, two years later, kicking and screaming, and hopefully, making our presence felt.

Anyone who’s got a taste of Virgin Comics knows that our books are split into two buckets, our “Indian stuff” and our “celebrity stuff.” Without going into all the detail that the interview does, the summary is that we’re trying to be original. We recognize the unique medium of comics, and how they can be used to incubate original ideas and stories. While we are always respectful of the comic itself, knowing that it’s an artform unto itself, we also know that it’s a great medium to nurture stories that can go on to live on film, tv, as video games, or online. Anyone that’s tracked us at all knows that so far so good here at Virgin. We’ve been able to create some distinctive books and managed to get them in the pipeline with some larger media companies to now evolve them as films, games, etc. That part of the process we don’t really control, though if requested, we’re happy to offer our two cents.

So without further adieu, check out the interview and let us know what you think. Aside from continuing to build out this company, our agenda is also to make the process as transparent as possible. Because, in our humble opinion, it’s not just the stories that we are creating that we hope are interesting and engaging, but the story about building the stories, that may be the most interesting. But that’s just my opinion. Why don’t you be the judge.

Sadhus do not know love or hate, desire or fear. They are detached from all emotional ties, devoted to a spiritual journey said to unleash unimaginable powers. This is the path James Jensen is fated to tread. But he must tackle his biggest obstacle yet… HIMSELF.

Is it September already? Is the summer already gone? Wow—that was fast. Here at Virgin Comics, we’ve had a summer full of excitement, celebrating our one-year anniversary, finding new partners to play and create with, and building out our business so we have stuff to celebrate at our two-year anniversary and beyond.

Along the way, we’ve also been asking the oh-so-existential question: “who are we?”You see, it’s not just our own corporate adolescence we are dealing with, it’s also the fact that, you, our audience, and even some of our partners, are asking that question in an effort to figure us out. We get that our projects aren’t exactly classifiable into one overarching category. We generate stories that stem from great Asian mythos (Ramayan 3392 AD, Devi) and then tap into the creative minds of some of the coolest filmmakers and creators on the planet (Guy Ritchie’s Gamekeeper, Dave Stewart’s Walk In), churning out a fusion of eastern, western, and admittedly bizarre elements of storytelling. See, we’re obsessed with funky stories and funky creative partners and resist anything that puts us in a box. So as we continue down this path of self-discovery, we search for more ways to expand our creative horizons to further perplex, inspire and excite our audiences, our partners and ourselves.

In that spirit, we’ve partnered with Studio 18, one of India’s premiere film and television studios to create a line of graphic novels, as well as animation, games, and movies that cater to the teen horror genre. We thought it would be fitting to expand on our crazy fictional fantasies and delve into the wildly horrific, dark and twisted world of thrillers. For centuries India has enchanted the world with its entrancing and spiritually-minded stories, so it’s about time we turned up the freak factor.

Eat the Dead, included in the following pages as a sneak peek, is the first from our India Horror imprint, the premiere of our truly “graphic” graphic novels. It’s a story about what lurks in the shadows of our pasts, what happens when our karmic duties defy the laws of “humane” nature, and the dark deeds one must do to rectify their wrongs. And then, there’s also one crazy looking beast of a woman who’s not interested in playing nice. I won’t tell you more, because it’s wrong to ruin a great story, but I can say that this comic is a true testament to what we represent here at Virgin Comics… you’ll never know what to expect next.
