American Gothic was painted by Iowan artist Grant Wood in 1930. The painting was inspired by an actual house in Eldon, Iowa which was white painted and built in the ‘Carpenter Gothic’ style of architecture. Interestingly, this beautiful house still stands and is open to the public – click here for The American Gothic House Centre web site.

What I particularly love about the painting is the dislocation between the two people – they appear both intimate and alienated at the same time. Apparently Grant Wood painted the man (his dentist) and woman (his sister) on separate occasions which has helped to create that uncomfortable sense of dissonance.

Unlike the Mona Lisa, finding or re-producing the clothes for American Gothic was quite straight forward. We decided to use vintage clothes as much as possible, so I only had to make the white-collared black dress and the distinctive brown pinafore.

I based the black dress on an original 1930’s dress that I had previously created a pattern for, I just added long sleeves and the little white collar. The pinafore was a little more difficult. I wanted to find an American source for the style rather that rely on what could be found locally (Lincoln, England). I contacted Diana Shonrock of Iowa State University who kindly supplied me with a series of images of typical 1930’s pinafores which looked very similar to the painting, including the use of ric-rac trim. I also located a number of 1930’s photographs of rural Iowa to use as a guide.

Jessica Strom, the Administrator of the American Gothic House Center, was also very helpful, guiding me to other paintings by Grant Wood which might further illuminate the details. The problem of matching the pinafore fabric was also solved by Jessica, as she supplied me with a recreated swatch of the print and suggested a company called Spoonflower, who create custom fabric, to reproduce it for me. The resulting fabric was brilliant. Jessica also supplied us with photographs of the Gothic House in exchange for the completed black dress and pinafore, a deal which suited us and our low budget project well. The cameo brooch we used was lent to us by an American friend, the brooch was her mother’s and so it was roughly the style and period we wanted.

As I couldn’t match the man’s shirt exactly, I found an original 1930’s plain white shirt and drew the stripes on with tailors chalk! The gentleman’s glasses were more difficult though. Although there are plenty of pairs around from the 1930’s they often had strong prescriptions (which would have distorted our model’s eyes) and were usually fairly small. The pair we used was the largest we could find, but they were still a little tight to the face. We also had the prescription lenses replaced with plain lenses.

Bulgaria, Romania and Tunisia have become Hollywood’s backyards because of low production costs, which is also an advantage for Turkish special effects makeup artists. Turkish makeup artists are popular internationally due to their high-quality work and low costs. While some work on projects abroad, some send their designs to foreign countries

Two Turkish space pilots enter a gravitational field during a routine mission and encounter aliens on a strange planet. Cüneyt Arkın, one of the two pilots, fights these unidentified aliens. Yeşilçam’s (Turkish Hollywood) first science fiction film, “Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam” (The Man Who Saves the World), made in 1982, is remembered for these scenes, effects and aliens.

Both Yeşilçam and the special effects industry in Turkey have made advancements since the 1982 film and are now opening up to the world.

Turkish prosthetic and latex special effects makeup experts, who create interesting characters out of their knowledge of anatomy, sculpture, chemistry, color and imagination, are popular not only in Turkish cinema but around the world.

The fact that films are shot in countries such as Romania, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Tunisia and Australia due to low production costs has become a particularly new opportunity for Turkish makeup designers. They are preferred for their high-quality work and low prices, and take part in projects abroad with effects such as broken arms, severed heads or fantastical creatures.

Demand from the underground causes an atelier to close shop

Arzu Yurter is a Turkish expert in the field of latex makeup design. Yurter, who is known recently after being asked to apply latex makeup to Ergenekon case witnesses, discovered the art form eight years ago. She received her education in Turkey and abroad. Working for films, commercials and photography shoots in which latex makeup is applied. Yurter is known for her work in “gothic style.”

“I can make a man a woman and a woman a man with plastic makeup. Even their father would not know them,” she said.

 Yurter said recent developments in cinema created a new sector that lets Turkish makeup artists take part in important projects abroad. “Makeup artists’ wages change between 50,000 to 200,000 euros in Europe and the U.S. according to the project. It is between 600 and 1,600 Turkish Liras weekly in Turkey. When Turkish makeup artists work for a foreign project, they earn 400 to 550 euros daily for the projects of the same quality,” she said.

 Yurter said she created plastic noses, chins, severed arms and legs for films in Korea, and also worked for many film projects in Italy, Romania and Canada as well as the Far East. She also told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review about some of the interesting proposals she has received.

“I received very different proposals when my name became known for latex makeup, which was planned to be applied to Ergenekon case witnesses. Security officials visited my atelier for the project, but we did not make a contract. After hearing this, I received interesting proposals that I could never accept. Some said ‘change the face of my gunman.’ Since I became a target, it disturbed me so I had to close down my atelier,” she said.

People come from L.A., Bollywood

Corci is the first name that comes to mind in the special effects makeup sector in Turkey. In his 35 years as a special effects makeup artist, his experience has been applied to many films made in foreign countries. Corci said he has received many proposals in recent years. “Bulgaria and Romania are like the backyards of Hollywood. Turkish makeup artists are preferred because they are very good and are priced low.”

Corci said demand from abroad was not limited to Bulgaria and Romania: “I get proposals from many countries to give training. I have attended many training sessions and seminars in Bulgaria and the Turkic Republics. On the other hand, there are those who come to Turkey for training. Students from Los Angeles, Canada, Iran, France and Bollywood, the heart of the cinema industry in India, come to Turkey in groups a few times a year. I teach them the details of the business.”

In the 35th year of his professional life, Corci plans to establish a new project: “I will make molds of famous faces for my new project. I am planning to take molds of nearly 35 people and want to open a museum or an exhibition to display these molds.”

Where creatures of your dreams are made

Dükkan-ül Hayal, founded by Emir Özer and Zeynep Nuhoğlu in 2006, is Turkey’s only latex makeup and animatronics special effects atelier. Özer and Nuhoğlu, who can create 2-meter monsters, said latex makeup and special effects require a disciplinary effort. “Recently, we have been working with higher-cost films and directors, but latex makeup is not completely understood in Turkey. They asked us to make a Terminator in three days last week. We were excited about it, but it was not possible,” said Nuhoğlu.

She said the fact that horror and super hero films have recently done well at the box office and the revival of Turkish cinema have increased interest in special effects makeup, adding: “The opening of different special effects and latex makeup studios will develop the sector more. The younger generation, particularly shows interest in this sector. Students from Mimar Sinan and Marmara fine arts faculties work as assistants in our projects.”

Nuhoğlu said they have plans for the sector’s development: “We plan to make a film, written by Emir Özer. We will use various visual effects and latex makeup applications. We will send the film to foreign festivals and prove to the world how good the business is carried out in Turkey.”

As for interesting demands, Nuhoğlu said: “Some people call us from the Black Sea and ask us to completely change their face or make their nose smaller. We don’t accept demands like this unless it for a production, because it is unethical.”

The cost of special effects and latex makeup differs according to each project. The cost of a scene where the artist will be cut in two, the camera dimensions and lighting conditions would cost between 7,000 and 25,000 liras. The cost of face makeup is around 6,000 liras.

^ After the façade of the northern transept was built  in the 13th century, a much older portal was transferred to it.  The sculptures of this portal, of which the original destination remains unknown, have been dated around 1170-1175 and stylistically related to those of the collégiale Notre-Dame in Mantes.  Tympanum and archivolts were damaged during the Revolution and have been restored by Debret in the early 19th century.  How much these restorations were faithful to the original designs remains unclear.  All photos © Marc Haegeman. Smog filled the air and couldn’t stop until it felt like smoke entering in under a door. The streetlamps glowed orange. It was a stereotypical murder mystery scene, right down to the steps clicking in well-polished heels down the empty pavement. Clip clop. Clip. Clop.

Silence otherwise. The man didn’t really seem to breathe. His cloak tied up around his chin to ward off the December air. Northern Europe could be cruel to beggars e’er Christmas. No one at all on the street, though. No Dickensian cheer, or even bleakness.

He passed St. James’ Park and thought he owned the world. When no one else was there to disturb his thoughts, he could make himself believe he owned the still pond broken into ripples only by swan wings. Just like his footsteps on the pavement. This was his world, this place of shadows and light. His imagination owned it all. He was not even English. He did not dare open his mouth and break his own little reality. But what if he were English, and not from Yonkers? Would he find these five minutes before midnight as magical as he did? Or would it just be another late night walk home from the pub after last call?

A few blocks over Big Ben sang in his tower and a harsh wind whipped past the buildings from the Thames. December in London and it was beginning to snow. ‘Snow, snow, snow…’ Ben said.

He would not be going back to her flat. She’d kicked him out this afternoon when the grey sun glinted harshly off of office windows. It seemed harsh and clinical, somehow like this night, but a lot less inky. The night was undulating, and honestly if he couldn’t find a hotel, he could talk his feet into walking around ’til daybreak. Ribbons and roses and leaves scattering on the ground. He was stuck in a Romantic nightmare.

Oh, ridiculous. Ah, fool-hearted. No one else walked on the street because no one else waltzed with madness at midnight. He did and he felt it in his heart. Maybe if he walked til morning he would find his heart exploding in the modernity of the Underground thrumming beneath his feet.

Not just for Halloween anymore, skulls are being stamped on everything from panties to baby onesies, and though it’s something of an old trend on both fashion-forward coasts, skulls have only recently become widespread.You can find them in chain stores such as Underground Station, a shoe and accessory shop that has increased its skull stock in the past year. Besides slip-on canvas skull shoes, the stores sell a variety of skull socks, wallet chains, belts, hats and T-shirts.

Store manager Ryan Pabalan, at The Citadel in Colorado Springs, Colo., attributed the popularity of skulls to a desire to look like a rock star.

But in certain counter-culture circles (which embraced skulls years ago), the mainstreaming of the skull trend is a bit insulting, says Paula Loukakis, who, along with husband Athan, owns the Colorado Springs clothing store State of Mind.

“They’ve been around for 12 years. It’s nothing new, it’s just popular now in the main culture,” she says.

Blame couture designer Alexander Mc-Queen, whose 2003 skull scarf became popular with Hollywood fashionistas.

Or Gwen Stefani, for giving skulls a rock star appeal.

Or even Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy, which led to a retail fury of pirate-style fashion.

Regardless of the reason, mainstream fashion has indeed embraced the skull, with even the big-box stores – Target and Wal-Mart – stocking up.

And shops that have carried skulls all along have seen more skull products come to market. Because of that, State of Mind started stocking more skull fashions about a year ago, says Athan Loukakis.

For the most part, skulls are sported by younger generations – teenagers to early 30s – but Loukakis says he’s occasionally sold skull apparel to customers in their 60s.

“It’s hard to define who’s going to buy it,” he says. “Some people buy it to go to a party to look tough. And some people buy it to wear all the time.”

So what, exactly, is it about skulls?

“The appeal is the badass image – the bad boy,” Loukakis says.

Ryan Olgren, a 16-year-old Mitchell High School student, in Colorado Springs, agreed. Though he owns only one skull T-shirt, he says it does evoke a certain je ne sais quoi – mostly because skulls represent pirates.

“People like pirates because they’re rebellious,” he says.

The design that accompanies the skull – pirates, hearts or a death-metal scene – also determines how edgy the message is, says 17-year-old Damon Lowe.

“There’s the skulls that are for girls that are like cute – the eyes are hearts and stuff,” Lowe says. “Then there’s the skulls for guys that are all rugged.”

Which is what made Mc-Queen’s scarf edgy: Plastering the human head on highend fashion was cutting edge, says Simon Ungless, director of graduate fashion at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

But now that skulls are mainstream – they are in Colorado Springs, after all – some couture lines have since shied away from them.

Still, there’s evidence that high-end skull style is alive and well. British artist Damien Hirst recently sold a human skull cast in 8,601 diamonds for $100 million. Also available: a Theo Fennell skull ring sold for about $18,800, and a sterling silver King Baby Studio skull bracelet sold for $725 at Neiman Marcus.

Panama is predominantly a Roman Catholic country.  It is estimated that 75 to 85 percentof the population identifies itself as Roman Catholic and 15 to 25 percent as evangelical Christian.  The Roman Catholic religion came from Spain, which was the superpower of the XVIth century which colonized the country and the rest of Central and South America with the exception of Brazil.  Brazil was colonized by Portugal.

Panama has a rich Spanish religious architecture.  I will do my best to bring these architectural treasures to Lingua Franca for your enjoyment in the near future.  Today, I will take you by the hand and visit the most beautiful and most visited church in Panama by international tourists.  It is often confused with the Metropolitan cathedral which is another impressive building.

The name of this church is Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen (Church of our Lady of Mount Caramel).  It is located in the heart of Panama City, and considered by many as one of the most treasured religious icons in Panama inspired by medieval Gothic architecture.  As its name indicates, the church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Mount Caramel (or Carmen).  This  church  is the only Gothic architectural style building in the country.

This structure was built by the congregation of the Carmelites which have been in Panama since 1940.  The first stone was placed on July 7, 1947 and the church was inaugurated on July 16, 1953, even though the termination of the building was two years later when the two imposing towers were finished.

La Iglesia del Carmen is an imitation of the Gothic architectural style which flourished during the Middle Ages, and is perhaps the most beautiful architecture style conceived for sacred art.

The structure includes two slender and elaborated towers which stretches upwards towards the sky with the purpose of elevating to heavens the prayers of the people.  It symbolizes the extended hands of a man in an effort to embrace God.  According to architecht Alberto Arosemena, the Iglesia del Carmen was inspired on the gothic style of the late XIV century representative of Toledo, Spain.

Last week, while waiting outside Profuturo to pick up a check, I took several pictures of this architectural treasure of Panama.  This is what caught my eye.  Here we go.
