After a decade of loving Ellis, Süskind, Mills ..and *very* nearly falling in love with Danielewski

I should have guessed how much I’d adore Louise Welsh… and good God I do.

Just before Christmas I found The Cutting Room on a bookshelf.  48 hours, I sat, sofa-bound and still, and devoured each richly, darkly, absorbing page, each twist and turn, watched the mystery ravel, then unravel, all to it’s one line conclusion, that explained everything – subtle, as if in a whisper after a storm of ‘who dunnits’ in the Glasgow underground. the single line explanation is a trick best taught by Mills; he follows the gothica, the foreboding, six words,  a line you could easily miss if you were skimming, a warning, never to skim noir.

I had high hope for The Bullet Trick.

It jaunts between the seedy underworld of London, Berlin and Glasgow… being a Berlino-Glasgaphile, this I adore (I’m also a Francophile and a Japanophile and a Finnophile).

It’s dirty Cabaret, and piss soaked glamour, smoke and mirrors. What’s not to love?

Aside from the fact that I didn’t buy the version with the deliciously Sally Bowles cover above, I bought the one with the decidedly chick-litty cover, below…my error

Sheesh, I tell ya. The only thing scary about this Halloween is what my sentient-being of a computer might be doing come said hallowed eve… If I’d known Toshibas were so vengeful, I’d have considered my options further…

So, I’m not dead.  The local anime-fans who read my rant on DJ Thunderstrom from the con here at home-base did come with torches and pitch-forks, frothing at the mouth, but I escaped them, and in an effort to find refuge, I tripped and fell into a hole. That hole appears to be a full-time job for the purpose of paying for my irresponsible design to see a.b.s. live in London next month. Ironically, I’ve become musically deprived.  There’s been excesses of great music coming out this autumn– on that note, I hope everyone got their copy of a.b.s.‘ Kimi no Uta. And girugamesh’s Crying Rain. I didn’t get mine, just, y’know, in case you were wondering. Next up is D’s Day by Day (title subject to change). Due out on December 2nd. The featured song is the theme to a dating sim for cell-phones, called Love Summit. Your guess is as good as mine.

To prep your palette for gloomy gothic group D’s love summit this winter, I recommend checking out their already-released, Tightrope.

I admit, I’m not always in the mood for D. I think they’re a great band, but sometimes the gothica can be a bit overbearing for my taste. Tightrope, then, came as a stupendous surprise. Their sound has become a lot more polished since going major, which is apparent in their earlier major-label singles, BIRTH and Snow White. Both singles took a major (no pun– okay, fine, pun intended…) swing in a new direction, the former being brighter and rockier, and the latter a veritable ballad. Tightrope swings the other way now, back into dark and heavy…but far from typical D fare. This time you can’t hear the corsets and platform boots, if you know what I mean.

Tightrope plays ASAGI’s distinctive, throaty vocals to different advantages. The way the vocals work with the melody is seamless, relentless, and by the end of the song, you’re left breathless (along with ASAGI, no doubt)– result of a thrashing pace, kinky guitar riffs, and just enough bondage to ensure we’re not going anywhere. It’s a refreshing rock track, catchy in a very indie way, and glossed over with the perfect dash of goth.

If the gloomy weather, falling crimson leaves, and first signs of leering pumpkins doesn’t get you in the mood for some serious gothica… just leave it to D.

Pick up Tightrope~ and get Day by Day on your X-mas list, because this Love Summit thing sounds like something that can’t be missed.

Bavari is what happens when Sodom and Gomorrah mixes with a surrealist modern Europe. He is a classically-trained painter who habitually photographs images from museums and on the street in Europe, intertwining them with concepts straight from ancient Biblical stories into grotesque, beautiful, and absurd computer-generated art.

A glimpse into Alessandro Bavari’s gallery conjures esoterically detailed Dali-esque nightmares tainted with Biblical perversities cited, (on his website), from specific verses.

His dismally manipulated photographs are influenced by the darker Biblical stories, architechture, Michelangelo, and his guitar, (which he plays in the classical style). He twists the style of Salvador Dali into his own creation in the “Tryptichon: Deconstruction of a Hero and Reconstruction of the Man” series, as well as images from Sodom & Gomorrah like “FOUR GREEN LIZARDS GOING TO SUCK MILK FROM A YOUNG MOTHER“.

“Headcleaner“, a scary short film set to industrial music “conceived and realized” by Alessandro Bavari, reminds one of a Tool or Nine Inch Nails video coupled with Dali’s surrealism.

A disembodied brain attatched to a spine becomes a heart and then an eeirie pitch-dark creature riding upon a mutant baby doll with razor-like arms digging into the earth. Amidst shrieks and a strange baby’s cry, another hideous creature rises from the ground to scream in your face. Cut to a man panting and sweating, sitting up in bed with some frightening figure behind him drawing circles in the top of his head with an instrument, a feverishly-pitched noise in the background.

Those who have actually met Bavari, such as Paul Murnaghan, a guest on a radio program transcribed on Bavari’s website, will tell you he is not as mad as one would think. The quiet type, actually. His models are freakish – almost frightening – even in real life, and he extends his Biblical influence as far as the size of his photographs. Twelve is a Biblical number, he prefers using 18 x 12″.

I’ve managed to finish my second piece for the Gothica dungeon rooms.

The Fountain

I haven’t really finished this piece, since I would like to add a statue and water effects.  I just need the chance to go into the “big city” and order them.

I got the first of the Gothica pieces finished.  It’s “The Stair Room” from the Hirst Arts Advanced Gothic Dungeon rooms.

At the beginning of the year I began to think about doing  a series of gothic terrain that I called Gothica.  My initial thought was that I’d do a fun sort of narrative to go along with this idea of a gothic-themed imagination.

There are, as always, some problems with my plan, not the least of which is the question of why build more terrain.  So, I decided to alter the Gothica project a little bit.  I’m going to build gothic-themed rooms for my old Descent set modular dungeon.  I still get to cast and build gothic blocks, get items that I’ll use (someday), and perhaps still get a chance for some narrative elements (maybe even some OGL encounter write-ups).

There’s seven rooms in Bruce Hirst’s “Advanced Gothic Dungeon” series that I want to do, starting with the Stair Room, which is first on the list.  I spent the day casting bricks, which I haven’t done in a while.  Hopefully I’ll have the first room finished by the end of next week, and then another room each week after that.  We’ll see.

So for some reason that I don’t quite get, fashion bloggers seem to be flocking to the Lady Gaga style right now. Seriously, anyone want to explain? I mean, I know she’s fierce but…what’s the huge sudden draw?

I guess VintageWear has something to do with it. And honestly, I had to see what the huge deal was. So I picked up some Fame Shades in Diamond on Jet.

So, what’s a GaGa Girl to do with her Fame shades? I figured…well, why not see how I can do a GaGa outfit. I had already seen some shiny silver ala Tiffer. And I had already seen some platinum bangs and off the shoulder numbers ala Gogo. But one thing was missing: cowls.

For some reason, I had gotten it into my pretty little pixeled head that the Kyoot Ilia cowl was full body. Imagine my shock when there was no pants. That’ll never do. So…I fetished things up a bit. After who doesn’t love a little latex?

I kept the cowl part of the outfit, and the gloves. For boots, I wasn’t too thrilled with my choices. None of them really looked great. So, I went to google to google some Gaga. Cause please, if you’re going to look the part, get it right. Well, I found the lovely miss Gaga arriving at MTV studios in knee high black boots, actually they had some bits cut out, and a black body suit. Close enough for me.

Blutengel, are from Berlin, Germany (which by the sound is quite obvious). Their music is some kind of a hybrid between Gothic chanting and Electro beats. The sound is quite futuristic and dark. Electronic music and Gothic vocals. Its very experimental but I kind of like it actually. Listen and find out for yourself. The track is named “Dancing In The Light” and I bring it to you in three different mixes.
