Bom, ela é ruiva, nasceu na Áustria, em Viena e filha da celebre Gottfried Helnwein,  Mercedes Helwein é sim uma artista fina e clássica no universo da arte moderna, escritora e artista de vídeo que produz junto como seu irmão e se associou com uma marcar de moda WeSC (We Are The Superlative Conspiracy), onde fez os desenhos recentemente e seu primeiro romance de estréia foi “Os perigos potenciais da Hester Day” foi a publicação por Simon Schuster, em 2008.

Passou a sua vida na Irlanda e recentemente em Los Angeles. Seus desenhos são bem detalhados e foram descrito como “foto-realista delícias”, “lúcida contos de fadas”, “assombroso”, “gótico sulista”, “sugestivo” e “inesperada”.

I’ve recently had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with the drawings of Mercedes Helnwein. Daughter of the Austrian-Irish artist-provocateur, Gottfried Helnwein, Mercedes shows influence of her father’s watercolour paintings, without relying on his heavy-handed visual and visceral upset. Concentrating on the female figure, the incorporation of small or hand-held props, and the artist’s impeccable technical drawing abilities, Mercedes Helnwein presents a body of portraits almost exclusively in graphite chiaroscuro that have an unmistakable and delectable sense of sinisterness. Helnwein’s beautiful figures seem to have walked right out of an ad from a 1950s issue of Good Housekeeping (or Williamsburg, Brooklyn). Irony, however, is injected into the subject matter and conceptual elements of the renderings with situational humor, awkwardness, or juxtaposition of the figure to her environment and/or prop. Helnwein’s drawings are an examination of the female figure, donned in mod clothes, and disoriented, if not displaced, extending to the viewer a lovely, clean rendering of beauty in a vulnerable and most honest means. The artist is currently working toward her November 2009 exhibition at Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles, California, working on her second novel, and consistently collaborates on films with her brother, Ali Helnwein.

Ab 29. Mai 2009 präsentiert die Albertina zum ersten Mal seit ihrem Bestehen eine Dauerausstellung aus eigenen Beständen. Möglich gemacht hat dies die Übergabe der Sammlung Batliner im Jahr 2007 an die Albertina. Mit 280 Werken schlägt die neu eingerichtete Schausammlung auf 3.000 Quadratmetern Ausstellungsfläche einen Bogen über die spannendsten Kapitel aus 130 Jahren Kunstgeschichte vom französischen Impressionismus bis in die jüngste Gegenwart.

Gemälde von Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Amedeo Modigliani, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall und Kasimir Malewitsch geben einen Überblick über die Kunst des französischen Impressionismus und Postimpressionismus, der Fauves, des deutschen Expressionismus und der Russischen Avantgarde. Mit Bildern des späten Picasso, Exponaten von Mark Rothko oder Francis Bacon führt die Ausstellung bis zur Kunst der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts und findet ihren Abschluss in Exponaten von Gerhard Richter, Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer und Gottfried Helnwein.

Die Künstler Gottfried Helnwein, Helmut Newton, Chuck Close, Erwin Wurm, auch John Coplans und Jannis Kounnellis sowie die Künstlerinnen Elke Krystufek und Marie Jo Lafontaine, stellen unabhängig von ihrer künstlerischen oder nationalen Herkunft den Körper, dessen Ausdrucksqualitäten beziehungsweise Text/(Körper)Bild-Kombinationen ins Zentrum ihrer Arbeiten.
Die Ausstellung “Body and Language” präsentiert diese unterschiedlichen künstlerischen Positionen mit ca. 80 Fotoarbeiten aus den Beständen der Albertina.

So when Cyril asked me to be the subject of some of his new photographic works I immediately said yes. Both Cyril Helnwein and his father Gottfried Helnwein are some of the most thought after artists of our time.  Cyril is known for not editing or altering his photographs during any post production which is important to keep in account to Cyril’s talent since we live in the era of digital trickery, Cyril does not digitally manipulate his photographs, instead choosing to use traditional photography tools such as lighting, movement and timing. 99% of his work is completely photoshop-free.Myself along with many others are big followers of his work. Marilyn Manson, Lisa Marie Presley, Demi Moore, Brandon Boyd, Ashton Kutcher, Jason Lee , Danny Masterson, Laura Prepon, Macaulay Culkin, Chris Masterson, Cobi Jones, Jenna Elfman are just some of the collectors of his work. His second big photography series “The Ethereal”, was unveiled in March 2005. Over 800 people attended this show hosted by actors Christopher Masterson and Danny Masterson in the artist district of Los Angeles.His most recent series “Myths & Fairytales” opened in Los Angeles in February 2008, hosted by actor Michael Peña, again with record attendance.Cyril is married to Irish actress/model Kojii and together they have the most adorable daughter named Croí Sequoia.

Gottfried Helnwein evoca a experiência de surpreender o espectador com aquilo que ele já conhece. É como se ver no espelho deformado o que em si já se sabe deformado. Monstro de cada um em nós. Monstro de cada nós em um.

Ayer andaba de visita por el blog de Inner El Pendejo y me encontré este artista del que, de todas sus fotografías, esta fue la que más me gustó/impactó/conmovió.

Se llama El Día de la Madre (arriba) y como yo la veo y la puedo interpretar, dice muchas cosas. En general, Gottfried Helnwein echa mano de situaciones violentas, controversiales y en algunos casos repugnantes o sangrientas.

Sin duda un excelente portafolio que no puedes pasar por alto si eres amante de la fotografía o simplemente buscas algo de inspiración.

P R Brown

P R Brown - Fashion Photography

PR Brown spans many genres with his company Bauda. Fashion, Landscapes, Portraits, music videos, graphic design, CD covers. The list is endless. His black and white images are gorgeous and they have a quality and look to them that I find amazing. I can’t explain all the elements of his images that I like but they have an appeal.
Recent works include  the book ‘The Heroin Diaries, A Year In The Life of A Shattered Rockstar‘ by Nikki Sixx and the album ‘Saints Of Los Angeles‘ by Motley Crue.

David Bailey

The above is my favourite book by David Bailey. In this book there is a photograph of Ronnie Wood (that I can’t find on the net) but it is one of my all time favourite photographs. The Rock and Roll Heroes prints are a set of photographs from the 60s to the mid 90s of ‘rock and roll’ icons such as The Rolling Stones, Oasis and The Beatles.
I know an awful lot of random things about David Bailey, such as he, with Andy Warhol, planned to make ‘A Clockwork Orange‘ But funds fell through and we got Kubrick’s classic (thankfully) =]
But I do know that David Bailey is a must on any contextual list for me when black and white photography is in question!

Nikki Sixx

So I know he’s in Motley Crue and he isn’t a pro – but he’s been taking photos for years and has learnt from the likes of PR Brown! Check this – you can’t say he isn’t good!

James Michael by Nikki Sixx

Well maybe his work is an acquired taste but I love the colours he finds, the gritty situations he photographs – recently he has gotten into close-ups like the one of James Michael and I really love the shots he’s done.
But I do wish he would go back to taking photos of loads of subjects instead of tens and tens of his girlfriend Kat Von D. They’re good images, but I wanna see some variation Nikki!!

This is probably my favourite image by Annie Leibovitz which features Gisele Bundchen (Wendy), Tina Fey (Tinkerbell) and Mikhail Baryshnikov (Peter Pan). Leibovitz’s Disney Dream series are a perfect sophisticated take on the films that were favourites growing up.
Plus – could there be anyone more perfect to be Peter Pan than Mikhail Baryshnikov?

Grunge, raw, shock value, in your face – everything I love in photography / Design! He isn’t a very famous photographer worldwide but is renowned in Finland! Love him for many of the same reasons that I like P R Brown’s work. I’ll save you the essay.

Gottfried Helnwein

Ninth November Night - Gottfried Helnwein

Gottfried Helnwein is another artist I love who covers a number of genres, paintings, drawings, photographs, installations, film. The above is one of my favourite photography installations by Helnwein – Neunter November Nacht (Ninth November Night)
A huge number of photographs made up a 300ft memorial to Kristallnacht and concentration camp child victims. The installation was first displayed on Nov 9th in Germany between two notable museums. Some people were enraged and cut up the photographs – symbolically cutting the throats of the Jewish Children, as you can see in the above images.
The reason I love Helnwein is because he isn’t scared to challenge social issues.

Jez Smith took a fantastic set of photos for The Sydney Dance Company. I love the raw background in contrast to the beautiful ballet dancers. Don’t have much to say about him, just like him and wanted to include him.

Is a photography blog really complete without a mention of David LaChapelle? Not a huge fan but I do appreciate him as a fantastic photographer. This is one of my favourite images by DLC featuring Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain.
Definitely influential to a lot of other photographers, and no one else really does what he does – so Kudos Mr DLC

She does very casual images that show a lot of fun, which I think is very important to bring to a stressful wedding! I’m a big fan of the 2nd image I included here of a grooms party. She does commissions, portraits, equine – all different stuff!

Ending on a very controversial point – well a number of controversial topics really – Andy Warhol, Capital Punishment, The Electric Chair, and whether this can be included in a photography blog.
Well the Electric Chair prints were done as screenprints and I think I am right in saying there is a photograph at some point!
Probably one of the few pieces by Warhol / Factory that I like.
