Jody Watley’s new album The Makeover is an outstanding set featuring her unique interpretations of some classic and soon-to-be-classic songs, but we wanted to know … what are her favourite makeovers?

Says Jody: A makeover completely transforms a song making it unexpected and new again. Here are some of my favourites:

1. Luther Vandross “A House Is Not A Home” (Hall of Fame)

2. Marvin Gaye “Star Spangled Banner”

3. Grace Jones “La Vie En Rose’

4. Maxwell “This Woman’s Work”

5. Isaac Hayes ‘By The Time I Get To Phoenix”

6. Nuyorican Soul “I Am The Black Gold of The Sun” (i’d never known of the rotary connection original)

7. Adele “Make You Feel My Love” (didn’t know it was a Dylan song until she did it)

8. Brand New Heavies With 4Hero “I Don’t Know Why I Love You”

9. Whitney Houston “I Will Always Love You”

10. D’Angelo “Feel Like Making Love”

Great list, Jody

Video-wise, Jody continues to fire on all cylinders! Check out a further clip from the album, this time for the killer cut A Beautiful Life :

An excerpt taken from Andrea Klarin’s biography:

“At the age of 18 photography became my passion and I decided to make it my future career when I was 22. I studied photography for three years in Brussels (Belgium) at INRACI. Now I mostly live and work in Paris. I would describe my work as being based on the constant need to move and evolve! It is a continuous search for something that is “in the air”, something that cannot be touched but is contained in the world around us. I don’t try to represent reality but I try to filter it and through this imaginary world attempt to show its elegance, chic and glitter. I am very attached to my team and I consider their work just as important as my own! Working in a team for me means being surrounded by people that you appreciate not only as professionals but as people as well!”

Andrea Klarin has shot for the likes of Valentino, Lanvin, Guerlain, Rochas, Van Cleef & Arpels, Nike, L’Oreal, and been featured in Vogue, InStyle, Harper’s, Madame Figaro, Financial Times, Sunday Times, El Pais. I really like that every photograph he takes has an air of sensuality to it. He is AMAAAAAZING! Enjoy!

“Them hustlers like my fashion”- Lady Gaga There’s no doubt that Lady Gaga is thee

“Them hustlers like my fashion”- Lady Gaga

There’s no doubt that Lady Gaga is thee flyest and perhaps craziest chick in the game right now! Wearing weave-covered satellite dishes on her head (that is what they are… right?), mouse lips, neck braces, and her face constantly covered, Gaga has to be the most outlandish of them all. Last time we the people got a rush like this, Grace Jones was running through Studio 54! 3 decades later, and with a slew of comes & goes, Gaga seems to be the definite:

Serving us one too many “WTF?!” moments in the beginning, Lady Gaga has turned almost every Z100 listener, and MTV watcher into true appreciaters of fearless fashion. Seemingly shoving her raw sense of style down our throats, and forcing us to love a spoiled little Yonkers girl, with serious vocal talent and an insane ability to find her limit, then transcend it– every time! Christian Siriano recently revealed that he was one of Lady Gaga’s first go-to designer guys, when she was performing on the ‘Today Show’ for the first time, last year for her first single “Just Dance”. Since then, he says he’ll be lucky to get her to try on something. Not because she changed, not because she feels as if she’s above the “smaller” designers, but Gaga now gets her clothing specially designed by the ‘Haus Of Gaga’.

About the ‘Haus Of Gaga’, she says “No one gets it!” But why would they? I mean, how could they? Her exclusive design team makes the crazy, insanium, outlandish things you see Gaga wearing when she hits the red carpet or the stage. No “Steal Her Look” or “Get Her Look For Less” here! But what are the chances of me and you getting our hands on some Haus Of Gaga? NONE. “It’s not a commodity, it’s not meant to be sold”. I extend my sincerest apologies to the God’s and the Gay’s. No Gaga look a likes over hurr.

The ‘Haus Of Gaga’ has become just as big of an entity as the woman herself. And while I was a little skeptical of the Gaga to begin with, and anyone who knows me knows this, I thought something about her swag was a little inauthentic. But back tracking on old pictures, and comparing them to new ones, not much has changed except for her budget:

In the picture on the left, Gaga was a brunette getting her foot wet in the game, and on the right Gaga is an established pop star performing for a throng of fans. The same piano swag, just at different times in her come-up.

Even if you watch her new “Video Phone” video with Beyonce, who is a pretty hard act to follow, and an even harder act to upstage, the pop new-bee went toe to toe with the Queen Bey and held her own! And it’s looking like Bey Sting even pulled some style inspirations from Haus Of Gaga:

Crazy video! Insane style! FM are eternal supporters of the Gaga.

Ah, but oh for a girl that brings something more to the table other than sex appeal… a mind is a terrible thing to waste and a vision is worth beholding when some thought has been put into it from the protagonist!

Give me something sleazy, breezy with attitude and aplomb all wrapped up in whatever it chooses over the coy, pretty, dull as dishwater values of the girl-next-door. It’s not for me and I can’t work with that. Why? Because it’s boring and played-out! Bring me excitement and individuality’s head on a plate – it’s a date!

Going GaGa for the lady…

Currently I’m digging the intriguing battle of the sexes between Rihanna and Lady GaGa. The former is a good girl-gone-badd, whilst the lady G doth protest too much. Of course we’ve seen it all before and so what? I loving it as it unfolds… in my mind at least.

They are both hot but GaGa tries harder and wears less more often, whereas Rihanna has a wonderful mysterious dark side, which if like me, you’ll find that rather irresistable and the force is definitely just as strong! However GaGa is so out there with her sexuality that she is always almost too hot/much to handle. If your old enough to remember when Madonna was pushing the boundaries of what was acceptable for ladies in pop then multiply that by a thousand – that’s where GaGa has taken it. Having said that check out Madge in her heyday – pissing off the Vatican and prudes in general…

And now jump aboard my time machine as I whisk you back to the late 70s/early 80s for one of the originals and probably the best of the lot – Grace Jones.

Grace Jones is a pretty outstanding character. Jones was born in Jamaica and grew up in Syracuse. In the early seventies she flew to Paris, where she had a roommate named Jerry Hall. Both became top models. Jones was simply too big a personality for the mere fashion world to contain. She made her first album in 1977 and had a series of dance hits. She also appeared in a string of cheeseriffic movies that had names like Straight To Hell and Conan the Destroyer. This cover of Top Petty’s Breakdown is from her 1980 album Warm Leatherette. Jones has been incredibly influencial both for her music and her style. Her look, both masculine and Amazonian, is unique and truly iconic.

Och som hon tog i när hon sjöng singellåten ”Do You Love Me”!

Amanda Bengtsson, alias Jenssen.

över ”You Really Got Me” (The Kinks), ”Born To Run” (Springsteen), ”Dream A Little Dream Of Me” (Ella Fitzgerald) och ”Hallelujah” (Leonard Cohen) till den äldre Elvis Presley-låten ”Suspicious Minds” med samma stora – ja, gigantiska – attack, inlevelse och uttryck.

Grace Jones – Slave To The Rhythm

Grace Jones – Slave To The Rhythm

In a rare moment, I was lying on the couch the other night in this dimly lit living room, hand just touching the ceramic floor tiles, the pervasive caramel colored walls and floor painting my world, lost in a sea of sexual thoughts, a little drunk, a little high – and this song came on the box.

…just as it finished – I tripped in tastes of dreams teasing me further into a state of sexual melancholy.

In the last few years fashion, art and design has pulled us back into our shoulder pads, skinny jean

In the last few years fashion, art and design has pulled us back into our shoulder pads, skinny jeans, and leg warmers. Music saw the come back of 80’s pop stars like Grace Jones, Duran Duran and Spandau ballet. The conspicuous 1980’s busy life that was once advertised with a Filofax is now broad-casted on the mighty Facebook or Twitter. On TV we are now watching the remake of A-team and Knight Rider.

It might just be me but I just find it difficult, at my age, to bring myself to look like a character from “American Psycho” and to my relief, we are now seeing signs of revival of the great period of British liberation.

The catwalk is showing a growing return to chic-ness with sharp shapes like pencil skirt, monochromes and stilettos (which my mum refers to as “encule mouche” or in the queens English ‘Fly f***ers’) Also sharp Kray style suits with Winkle pickers or Loafers. This season, Ben Sherman’s women collection and the opening of their bespoke boutique on Saville Row, reflect the huge demand and the return of the sleek look of the 60’s.

 Photography by Grant Squidd

This return to chic in fashion is also echoed in the world of media by movies and TV programs about 60’s icons such as Coco Channel, Audrey Hepburn and Francoise Sagan.

In the Art world we have been spoiled, by The National Portrait Gallery who are exhibiting the works of 60’s influential photographers like David Bailey, Gered Mankowitz and Robert Whitaker, to name but a few. The gallery’s press release quote:

‘This major exhibition explores the leading pop music personalities who helped create ‘Swinging London’ in the 1960s. Over 150 photographs, together with a range of memorabilia, illustrate how the photographic image, music and performance made these pop stars the leading icons of their time.’

Featuring key pop cultural figures the exhibition begins in 1960 with hit groups such as The Shadows and The John Barry Seven. As the decade progressed, early portraits of singers such as Cliff Richard, Adam Faith and Billy Fury were followed by those of bands such as The Kinks and The Who and of course The Beatles and David Bowie.”

Paradoxically, the 80’s enfant terrible of the world of Dance, Michael Clark bring to the Barbican Theatre, possibly the best thing he has done in years, an outlook on the more Glam rock side of the 60’s and a nostalgic return of his teenage musical icons such as Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed.

Personally I found this return to femininity and masculinity pleasing and refreshing after a decade of androgynous grunge and carelessness.

We just have to wait and see what the next revival will be.

(Dessen berühmtes «In a Persian market» existiert inzwischen in den unterschiedlichsten Aufnahmen).

Partitur-Auszug des «Totentanzes» für Saxophon-Quartett von Bastian Fiebig

Abgerundet wird diese CD «Ballads of Good Life» – die mit ihrer knapp siebzigminütigen Spieldauer großzügig dimensioniert ist, aber aufgrund der Co-Produktion durch den Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe gleichwohl mit ca. 15 Euro preiswert daherkommt – durch vier kürzere jüdische «Traditionals» (u.a. «Play the Klezmer»). ■

Here’s the photo link to “Who Shot Rock & Roll” that I promised you several days ago. (Sorry for the delay, but I was attending an intense but informative National Arts Marketing Conference in Providence.)

While the New York Times and a lot of other media concentrated on the book cover photo of Tina Turner and the picture of Jimi Hendrix as Wilson Pickett’s side man (Jimi in process and tux!), no one caught the remarkable composition of line that is Grace Jones.

Even though we all rocked out in the hallowed halls of the Brooklyn Museum, this show is seminal for a couple of reasons. Sure, it elevates rock photoraphy to art photography but it does something else.”Who Shot Rock & Roll” gives the public the kind of high energy experience they want.

Brooklyn Museum - not as staid as it looks.
Experience, not exhibition, is what people want these days. And they don’t want their experiences one at a time. People want their experiences bundled.

Don’t believe me? Just take a look around the next time you’re in an elevator. Someone standing within inches of you is…

Listening to their iPod,

Texting, and

Planning what they’ll do when the step off the elevator.

Simplistic as my example is, I’m pretty sure it counts as a bundled experience. So, when the Brooklyn Museum added Blondie to their mix at the opening gala, they were definitely giving people a bundled experience.

This concept is something that the Presentation Arts and the Art Show promoters across the country should chew on.

How can you make your exhibition or show come to life?

How can you make it involve your viewers.

Take the blinders off and put the audio phones down. We’re suggesting you kick up involvement to another level.

And, I’m open to comments on this. Anything you as a presenter have done or would like to do to involve you audience – both in terms of creating anticipation and when they get to the on-site experience – deserves recognition. By sharing, we can start a social epidemic that might, just might, bring the experience to a breathless public.

BTW, you can click through Grace’s stance to see my story on “Who Shot Rock & Roll” in Antiques and the Arts Weekly.

Just a little horseradish would set these off...

Such harmless words. But oh so poignant.

Before I get to that, Thursdays dinner party. Justine (a dear colleague / friend from agency days of old), invites me over to her place.

In attendance; one of her colleagues, a journo who is bessy mates with the PR-PR guru in our Sydney office, and me. She lived with her cousin (who she mentioned was a photographer), in a stunning art-deco mansion block, overlooking Rushcutters Bay.

The view was stunning. The sort of second lounge area sits in huge windows, with big comfy lemsip sofas. My Sunday if I lived there? Coffee, oj, papers, croissant in that order!

After the youtube drama (some numpty released an ad pre-airing, unhappy client), we tuck in. Lovely food, stories, company. One of my best nights in Sydney.

Some story highlights:

- Justine came to stay with her cousin for a week. Still there 4 years on
- Her cousin owns several properties in Bali, and has furnished the apartment with nicks and nacks from his travel there. Totally eclectic, random, shouldn’t work, but does!
- He took her to a glam Sydney fashion show. After supping some champers, she offended an up+coming designer, when asking, ‘Sydneu’s lovely. But don’t you just think it’s no soul?’
- She gave cooking advice to a top Sydney Chef (Neil Perry), on how he could improve his Oysters. He took it more gracefully than the fashionista…

Needless to say, she’s beautiful, with a heart of gold. I kept spotting people I couldn’t quite place (Some Jaggers, a Beatle or two), but failed to make the connection. Anyway, she shows us one of his books, Siblings. All photographed together in their birthday suits. Big hoohaa at the time, a senior Aussie politician was involved, but had to pull out due to the ‘controversy’…

Anyway, cousin arrives back, lovely bloke. He asks if I’d like to see another of his books, so of course I say yes. He pops one in my lap, which has a very post-coital, slightly mashed looking Kylie grinning ear to ear, alongside the equally happy Mr. Michael Hutchence.

I flick through, and the whole thing is a celeb-spatter fest. Grace Jones, David Bowie, Nicole (pre and post tom (very hetro) cruise), you name em, he shot em.

He must have a real talent, they all look somewhat at ease. Something to do with the setting for the bulk of the shots no doubt; for a while, he was the club-appoonted photographer at the embassy club in London. He told a touching story about Paul and Linda, which I’ll share another day. Just makes you hate the evil one legged gold digger that bit more…

Book was stunning, his style effortless, his subjects totally at ease. A very interesting character, and as one of the snappers for Vogue Australia, I can see why Justine really did get some great opportunities to offend the ‘cream of Sydney’. Just as I did last time I was here.

But that’s a different story….

Iain is enjoying the Sydney Sun…

In addition to the futuristic inspirations, the runway models portrayed major influences such as fairy tale illustrations, romantic images and urban cityscape. From modern party wear to glamorous red carpet pieces, sophisticated elegance conquered the show. Specifically, Greta Garbo, Bianca Jagger, Grace Jones and Tim Walker photographs were some of the major inspirations for this collection.

Day 3

The Dark of the Matinée.

MySpace
Site officiel

Janelle Monáe – Many Moons

Outkast – Hey Ya!
