What a good start to the day, the bus arrived at the TNG rented offices only to find that despite it

What a good start to the day, the bus arrived at the TNG rented offices only to find that despite it being Utterly Bloody Freezing, none of the staff had arrived and the shutters were down. A staff member then appeared and let everyone in. I would like to point out that one of the people on TNG today was a heavily pregnant girl and standing out in freezing winds with no shelter was probably extremely bad for her.

My own day was mostly a tedious and silent experience- that is, I spoke to no one as I managed with some scraping to get my requisite amount of ticks on the sheet early and then say dying of boredom trying in vain to find new things to apply for, whilst the noise level in the room behind me grew to epic proportions. Equally awkward was the fact one girl, LazyText, started the same day I did but was subsequently kicked off the course, and was also kicked out of the shop where I work because of her utterly laziness, was back, gobby, loud and with a voice like a goose laying a square egg, she sat behind me flirting with the boys and making no effort whatsoever to behave cordially.

Listening to the tutor talking to the people on induction was a thorough was of damaging my pride:

“We will get you a job, if you put the effort in, but you’ve got to want a job. We have people who come in here with quals up to their ears, degrees and everything but if they don’t want to work then there’s not much we can do.”

I seethed. Since my last post no one from TNG has approached me regarding any progress made on finding me a suitable placement. If I do manage anything in the next couple of months, it will be down to my own efforts and have eff all to do with them.

As nothing happened really, apart from I died of boredom and felt carsick a lot, I’m going to highlight some of the people who were in TNG today.

The boys outnumber the girls, for no obvious reason.

Those who do appear to want to get down to work are ignored.

We had one lad who actually has been given a job, but his traineeship doesn’t start till January, so he still had to come on TNG in the meantime.

We had the aforementioned heavily pregnant girl, whose baby is due quite soon, but still has to attend despite the fact it’s nigh impossible to even get her a placement considering how soon the baby is due (Christmas baby I gather).

We had one lad who had been working hard since he left school at sixteen, but local industry being what it is at the moment, his place shut down and then he was out of work due to an injury. Owing to a mixup in paperwork, the dole still counted this as time spent unemployed and therefore made him go to TNG too.

So, another day of sitting on my bum getting progressively more world weary as I go. As a commenter has mentioned to me that they would ‘rather stick their hands in a grinder’ than go back to TNG I’m very much afraid I concur. I think, if this were to go on much longer, I would risk poverty and lack of NHS stamps.

A few hours ago, I returned back to campus from my last break as a college student. Come December, I’ll be a graduate, and heading out to the real world, which, as of quite recently, could be very rewarding.

Tuesday: night when I got home, I spent the night at my friend Travis’s house. I learned how to insert hyperlinks and add my site into search engines! yay! I just checked out google, and my site was there! I obviously need to work on adding more tags and more posts to get more views to my page, but at least it’s now out there on the internet, where people will hopefully find me.
Then we watched the end of GoodFellas, which is DEFF a movie I need to watch and pay attention to from beginning to end, cause from what I’ve seen, it was fucking awesome.

Wednesday: It rained, all day, but I had a very eventful and productive day. Travis took me to the eye doctor (I need a new prescription for contacts) and the people there were SUPER nice. As I am writing this, I am remembering that I need to call them back with information about my last prescription, so the doctor can finalize my script, and I can get new contacts! After my appointment, which only lasted maybe an hour, Travis and I went to the used book store in the plaza. He score some great deals on books about computers. I purchased a small book, for only $1.32, on circus themed paintings, which I’m going to give to a friend of mine. All of her work lately has had circus elements in it, and it made me think of her, so I’m going to give it to her.
That night, I went bar hopping with my friend Erin, which was pretty exciting.

At one of the bars, we watched her brother play in his band. I knew that he played guitar, but this was the first time I’d seen him play in his band. The lead singer reminded me of an ex/good friend of mine, and you could tell him and the bassist were brothers. It was like “heavy metal/screamo/hardcore/rock” night, so if you’re into that music, you should check them out HERE. DRH is the name, and if my school was more into that kind of music, I could hook them up with a show or two, but frankly, it’s all reggae and jam bands up here at GMC. Although, I have some connections in the field, and I’m going to do what I can to find them some shows.

Thursday: Happy Turkey Day! Wow, and what a Turkey day it was..This year, it was just my mom, my brother, his friend Mark, my mom’s friend Terry, and myself. My mom bought Turkey dinner this year from Market Basket, and for $55, you get thanksgiving in a box: Turkey, mashed potatoes, squash, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, and even rolls and a pumpkin pie. Everything was surprisingly pretty good, minus the potatoes. They were just a little funky to me..

So I experienced a first that day. I got home early in the morning, feeling pretty good, and wanted to sleep for a little but before turkey dinner. As the morning hours passed, I just felt worse and worse. I knew I was going to have to throw up, I just knew it. I really didn’t want to make myself do it, and I didn’t have to. I sat down at the table, and tried to eat, and my mom noticed how sick I looked. “Honey, you are so pale.” I told her “I know, I don’t feel good at all, I think I’m going to go upstairs and do it.” I left the table, and as soon as I got to the bathroom, it happened. I felt SOO much better, and went back downstairs, ate dinner with my family, and went back to bed.

Friday: I’m officially an auntie! Welcome to the world Trystan Scott Ouimette. He’s 3 months premature, and only 2 lbs, 1 oz, but he’s doing very well! My brother sent me a picture of him on my phone. He’s got the longest legs I have ever seen on a baby that tiny.

Other than the birth of my nephew, my day really sucked. I was in some kind of vehicle from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m.

Although, I spent the night at Travis’s house, and my dearest friend Mia, who currently lives in Idaho, called me at 2 a.m., raving about how she found the PERFECT job for me! (more to come on this topic)

Saturday: I got home early afternoon, and got some things done, like laundry and packing and cleaning up my room. I didn’t want to rush around Sunday morning, packing things up for my big adventure back to VT.

Sunday: I hung out with my mom for the afternoon before I headed back up to VT with Michelle. We left at about 3, and got back a little after 7. It was a really nice trip back up, with Dunkie’s ice coffees, and a beautiful, long lasting sunset, and some great tunes on the radio.

I didn’t get to take as many pictures as I would have liked, because as always, things didn’t work out like planned, and I left my camera at Erin’s for a day, but I do have some good shots that will be posted shortly, and hopefully people will start to check out my page.

Graduating from Durham.

“After years of expensive education, a car full of books and anticipation, I’m an expert on Shakespeare and that’s a hell of a lot, but the world don’t need scholars as much as I thought”. Jamie Cullum.

He may not be the world’s greatest singer but he does make a good point. Jamie Cullum released his Twentysomething in October 2003. Three years later in 2006, with the the last few A-Level Hamlet quotations slipping from my mind, I made the terrifying, exciting journey to University. Even then Cullum’s lyrics rang true, so much so that they even made it on to your writer’s Facebook page. At best, I thought, the arts provide ’soft skills’, giving their students the ability to do things like read and, if they’re really good, write. At worst, they leave their students unqualified for anything practical, condemning them to a lifetime of interesting, yet ultimately penniless, academia. But at the time, did it really matter? Of course not! All that I needed to worry about was that golden first. I’ll worry about what next later. Sorted.

Oct 20 2003

Fast forward three years. As it turns out, I’m not an expert on Shakespeare – ask me anything about eighteenth-century medical history though and I reckon I could give you a decent answer. More importantly, however, I’ve shaken Bill Bryson’s welcoming hand, graduated and crucially got that golden first!

But here’s the rub.

That first, that oh so crucial first, that first which dominated three years of my life, well, it doesn’t really, actually, seem to matter that much. While it does provide a proud talking point, for some odd reason, I don’t know why, that first doesn’t provide an automatic ticket into a job.

With exactly (probably) 99% of graduates out of work due to the credit crunch, and with the numbers of graduates rising every year, a first class arts degree does of course help in the elusive quest for a job, but by no means guarantees it. Rather, graduates of the arts are in the somewhat awkward position of being over-qualified for half the jobs out there, but devastatingly under-qualified for the other half. For every job in publishing, for example, there’s a publishing master’s, in journalism – a journalism masters, in library work – a library masters, etc. For everything else, there’s contacts (which, sadly, I don’t have).

A sound career choice, I’m repeatedly told, is Law. Law, like medicine, is a solid ‘profession’, the source of respect in the community and, of course, a healthy, very healthy in fact, bank balance. It is, of course, a wise choice, a dependable choice. However, with a one year conversion course costing c.£9000, followed by a second year legal practice course at the same price, it is a costly option, adding thousands of pounds of debt onto an already hefty graduate loan.

Where, then, does this leave the arts graduate? There are options. Further study is the obvious choice. If you love the subject and are good enough, a masters in your original subject is the first step to a long and satisfying life in academia. The other option? Further study. Convert to something practical. Whether that be that law, journalism, publishing, teaching or anything else that takes your fancy, your original degree alone will, most likely, not result in the job of your dreams.

This is not to say that I regret studying History. How else could I have learnt the intricacies of late-medieval German Humanism, or early-modern medical quackery, or … ? During my three years of study, I matured, gaining a greater understanding of society and why things are as they are: by no means, was it a waste of time. All I say is think about ‘what next’ now, before you graduate.

Why, then, do I write this embittered article? In my world of self-delusion, it’s a piece of altruism, lending my experience to generations of future students. In reality, it’s for my benefit – a CV builder. That’s all. Another notch on the bedpost.

Been a while since I noted my ventures down on here by last Wednesday saw the culmination of 17 year

Been a while since I noted my ventures down on here by last Wednesday saw the culmination of 17 years of study, my graduation.

Wearing a suit now feels like a second skin to me but today was different as I knew that I was going to be seeing my Uni buddies not donning hoodies, jeans and beaten up trainers for the first time.

The summer has sped by like Jenson Button’s Brawn and it that time a lot has happened. For one I found that the media industry is much harder to crack than even I imagined. But Wednesday gave me a bit of a reality check.

As far I have been busting my balls to try and get into my chosen industry but I have never questioned why I have been in such a rush. Am I running out of time? Am I in danger of missing opportunities? or is it simply the case that I am an impatient sod. Probably the latter.

Wednesday was one of the quickest days of my life, even now it is still a blur. The same old faces but with new haircuts, different stories and many going down different paths. Some people have looked to pursue a career outside of the media, others are still trying to crack it and some are just pondering their next move. It’s like one gigantic game of chess.

Too often I have tried to be the king of the board and that simply isn’t the case anymore. Whilst I often thought I was a big fish in a little pond at Uni, I am now a goldfish in the ocean with regard to the media. I have to find my way up the food chain but what’s the rush?

In an ideal world I would be working for one of your Sky’s or BBC’s at the moment but I am not. Many people I spoke to on Wednesday are looking forward to travelling, expanding their horizons and some even just having a break. Perhaps I should take heed from this.

I turned 22 last week which to be honest is no age at all. Perhaps I still need to grow further as a person before jumping into everything head first. Maybe travelling wouldn’t be such a bad idea but I just don’t think it’s me. Don’t get me wrong there are many places I would love to visit around the world. Italy, Seattle, Vegas, Egypt to name but a few but you try and find me an operator which accommodates all of those.

Tuesday might provide a new solution for me but I don’t want to put the mockers on it so my lips will remain sealed for the time being.

This aside the past few months have been jam packed. A brief foray into sales didn’t quite work out for me as I missed actually talking to people face to face. GMTV Kids served as a reminder that I still have a long way to go until I get where I want to be and currently being employed in a job just based on what I look like is actually quite unnerving. However I suppose I can’t really complain when it involves talking, chatting up hot girls and just generally wandering around can I?

Lets be honest, it could be a hell of a lot worse. The media is going to take some time but I have to admit now that perhaps bobbing along the river for a while isn’t so bad, be it a river full of make up, perfume and sharp suits.

Perhaps next time I post on here the Pawn may have taken the King.

Checkmate

Huzzah! Against all of the odds (up to and including the fact that many of my long term projects are stalled by either cash flow problems or a limited attention span) I have reached 100 posts on my mighty little blog. I’m actually pretty damn chuffed with myself, thanks for asking.

This image is a bit funny but a bit 'meep' all at the same time...

What has changed since I have started?

1. For the first time in a while, I have a plan. After a loooong period of applying for jobs that I was not entirely suitable for (as one friend stated “I could never see you wearing a suit and working behind a desk without going more crazy”), I bit the bullet over the whole ‘you-enjoy-working-at-the-school’ thing and decided that maybe my friends were on to something. I have been reliably informed that the application is moving forward (the school has received a reference request).

2. I now have a fulltime Christmas job, with the same place I worked last year. The hours being recently extended, I have now started to loathe the buses even more. Yesterday, I wanted to shin the man who told me that he had never had a problem with my bus service, after the bus was delayed by about 20 minutes. I still believe that my local bus service slogan should be ‘travel with us, and learn the meaning of disappointment’. If there is one good thing about the service, I am getting through podcasts like no tomorrow, and I can doze on the buses home. Working fulltime for the first time since January is uniquely tiring, but I’m still enjoying it.

What has stayed the same?

1. If you read anything about Graduate employment, it is likely that the words ‘high rates of unemployment’ or ‘huh! What are they good for? Absolutely Nothing!’ will be in there somewhere. I honestly can’t tell if there are more vacancies available this year (as last year I wasn’t really paying attention up to Christmas, and only noticed that there was nothing available when I went on Milkround and everything was on commission or non-paid internships). Lots of my good, able and hard working friends are still being fobbed off by the Dole Centre and have been very unlucky.

2. I still can’t drive, meaning my chances of travelling off and having wacky adventures have been severely curtailed.

3. I still can’t crochet.

Well it is official! I am legitimately a college graduate. I was having a hard time accepting it, partially because I petitioned to graduate late. I thought I would get my degree in March 2010, even though my course-work was complete. I was able to recognize that I have finally finished, because my degree came in the mail today. It went to my parent’s house, and I practically had to twist my mom’s arm to open it (well not literally, because I would have just opened it if I were there). Janessa made sure to send me the picture.

Yes, that is a B.S. in Biochemistry. I am proud of it!

What are we looking for?
As a co-operative, we need our graduates to have a unique mix of skills and behaviours. It’s not just about academic achievements, but also about the experiences, opinions and beliefs that make you who you are. It’s important to us that you are as passionate about a career in business, as you are about our values and principles.

Our Business Management programme will present a wide array of challenges, so you’ll need to be confident, tenacious, resilient and flexible. Early responsibility and a high profile are exciting prospects, but you’ll need to work hard to earn credibility and respect. The result of your efforts will be a leadership role in a unique company that continues to innovate and lead the market.

If it’s a career in finance you’re interested in, our CIMA Finance programme, you’ll start by gaining excellent experience of accounting software packages, along with a detailed overview of financial processes before preparing monthly accounts. Through analysing and interpreting the figures you’ll sharpen your commercial awareness; through working with external suppliers such as auditors, and by briefing senior managers, you’ll hone your influencing skills. You’ll gain a broad perspective on financial strategy, as well as experience within specialist areas such as tax, internal audit, strategic planning and treasury, before choosing where you want to concentrate.

To make it on to our graduate programme, you’ll need a 2:2 in any degree discipline; we have no UCAS point entry requirements.

Typical number of positions: 20

If you have all these things, we’d like to hear from you.

Set up in 2004 by an award-winning consultant from one of the UK’s largest recruiting organisations, this is a specialist technology recruitment company with a hugely dynamic culture. They have just acquired brand new offices in the City of London to support an ambitious growth plan which is heavily geared towards hiring and developing driven, sales-focussed graduates.

Initially, you will be in the research team and will be working on requirements across all areas of the business. Ultimately your goal is to find individuals who are suitable for placements. Should you help to make any successful placements, you will get a bonus which is based on a percentage of the commission. Typically this is between £200 and £2000. You will work on permanent and contract positions and use a mixture of techniques to find the right individuals. Most of the placements are made from headhunting candidates and getting referrals. A small percentage of placements are from advertising response.

Should you be successful, you will be able to progress to Trainee Consultant. This is where you will be targetted on winning new business for the company. You should already have the basics of finding the right people from the initial research stage so once you are competent in winning new requirements naturally you’ll be looking to make your own placements. Once you have proved you can do this you will then be promoted to a fully-fledged Consultant.

You will need to demonstrate the following:

- Commercial intelligence
- Drive and passion
- Aspiration
- Entrepreneurial flair
- Sales acumen
- Resiliance
- Working well in teams

As this is largely a telephone-based sales role dealing with high-end clients, you must possess first-rate oral and written communication skills.
