Cheyenne Mendel is opening a Community Acupuncture Clinic in downtown Crestone this month. Cheyen

Cheyenne Mendel is opening a Community Acupuncture Clinic in downtown Crestone this month. Cheyenne has been an acupuncturist since 1992. In 1993 she took a job at a pine lodge pre-release prison helping folks get off drugs and alcohol using acupuncture. Acupuncture was done in a group setting usually a circle where folks would sit in chairs and receive needles in the ears. The needles would turn on the pathways in the brain that only the drug or substance someone was using would turn on. Acupuncture has a way of balancing the body. The physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels of the body are included in each treatment. The body heals itself. Acupuncture just helps that process happen faster and more efficiently.

Cheyenne would treat about 15 people an hour in those institutional settings. The program was so successful she went on to start two more programs; one at an inpatient residential detox facility, and one for the Spokane County Drug Court in Spokane WA where first and second (sometimes even third) time offenders could opt out of jail sentences by attending the Spokane County Drug Court Diversion programs of which acupuncture was a part. Counseling, urinary analysis and other education was a part of this drug intervention.

Cheyenne was involved in acupuncture detox for 7 years. Many days she would treat 100 people a day between two or three programs. “Treating so many folks with very little time forced me to develop and hone my intuitive skills. I did not have time to take long health histories or take pulses. Also seeing thousands of people over those years allowed me to build up what I call an “energetic library” where I was able to see literally everything under the sun and learn a great deal about treating people and about myself too.”

What is Community Acupuncture and how does it differ from regular acupuncture? It refers to acupuncture done in a community setting. In my private practice I see one person at a time and it takes about 90 mins. In community practice I will see three people an hour for the very low price of $40 a session. It includes lying down and having needles inserted to deal with whatever issue a person has going on. She is also offering Auricular therapy where 5 needles are inserted in each ear for $5. This is a great place to start. Folks usually become aware and have the desire to work more in depth and then come to the community time where they make an appointment for 3 persons in one hour. For years I have treated 15 an hour so three an hour still gives plenty of individual attention at a low price.
