This past weekend at GCC, Jason Miller was speaking about distractions when he used his Mom and Dad’s Grandfather clock as an illustration for something that used to drive him crazy growing up. My Dad is a professional clock guy, so his story made me laugh.

Imagine your Dad being a Grandfather Clock repair man, and how many clocks a Grandfather Clock repair man would have around his house. One time my brother Joel and I counted the clocks around our house and stopped at around 30 or so. Grandfather clocks are the sound of home to me. My dad wrote this fun fact on his blog awhile back:

My business is repairing or setting up grandfather clocks.
I tune the chimes, listen carefully for bad notes and making the corrections as needed.
All grandfather clocks play Westminster chimes, some play 3 chimes.
The are reasons for all the chimes, some are religious, some are from church bells and some are taken from children's nursery rimes.
Westminster chimes are the most popular, made famous by Big Ben in London.
However the chimes were first set into the tower at University Church, St. Mary's the Great, in Cambridge, England.
The actual words are:

"Lord, through this hour,
Be Thou our guide
So,by thy power
No foot shall slide"

The music was Handels symphony,"I Know That My Redeemer Liveth'.The words and music were arranged by William Crotch in 1793.
Even for the non religious people who have clocks in their homes, they are hearing a prayer every quarter hour.
I like that and find it fun to explain it to people.

So, next time a you hear a chiming clock or church bell, take it as a call to prayer.

By the way Dad, my clock is broken…help?

In terms of age this is my newest grandfather clock…Vintage at best!

Eight day Westminster chime, chain driven movement. The cabinet work is very good compared to some other ‘modern’ clocks. This example was made in France. As you can see, there is some good quality carving on the case. The chimes on this clock also sound extremely good. Massive movement.

This clock is obviously a marriage of an original Comtoise Morbier movement and a newer hand crafted

This clock is obviously a marriage of an original Comtoise Morbier movement and a newer hand crafted case. I purchased this clock mainly for the case. Which is exceptionally well crafted. It appears to be a handmade case of the highest quality.

The movement was fitted with a single bob pendulum that was also fashioned specifically for this case.

When I inspected the movement I noticed upon attempting to wind the clock that the winding arbor on the time train side would spin without engaging the ratchet wheel and the weight would not raise.

Upon closer inspection, I found a serious problem! The steel winding arbor (that the winding key fits onto) had sheared away from the brass barrel that holds the weight and weight cord. I dismantled the movement (see photos) and removed the winding arbor and barrel assembly.

My dilemma was that this could not be repaired the same as it had been manufactured because the barrel was originally ‘staked’ to the winding arbor. Now, there was too much worn metal to restake it. In addition, some other repair person had done a poor job of soldering it previously and the repair had failed.

Morbier movement repaired and assembled

The solution was to manufacture a small brass bushing to slide over the steel arbor as a press fit, solder it flush to the barrel, and then solder the other end.

I used a 98% Tin 2% Silver solder with a melting point of 450 degrees. I do not have any machine tools to manufacture bushings. I made the bushing from a discarded ratchet wheel I had as a spare. All the fabrication was done with files and vice.

The repairs went as planned and the clock was rebuilt. It now runs fine. I will undertake a more thorough restoration of the movement at a later date.

The name “grandfather clock” instantly conjures up images of a dark, musty room, grandpa sitting in

The name “grandfather clock” instantly conjures up images of a dark, musty room, grandpa sitting in his rocking chair, smoking a pipe. Curls of woodsy smelling smoke drift across the room as his faithful old clock strikes the hour. Though the name grandfather is definitely old-fashioned, the clocks aren’t.

While much of their technology is a reflection of the earliest clocks, the styles have evolved through the years. Contemporary grandfather clocks are available in a wide range of styles. Whatever your taste, you are sure to find a clock to match. Today’s grandfather clocks can fit into any décor, including Oriental, Victorian or Minimalist. Moreover, a grandfather clock can become the focal point of wood furniture in a room, with everything else simply accentuating and supporting it.

Howard Miller is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of grandfather clocks ranging in price from £500 to £13,000. Sligh grandfather clocks are famous for their exquisite finish and sound and can be found in both traditional and contemporary designs. Ridgeway grandfather clocks have been made in Ridgeway, Virginia using German movements since 1960. Bulova is a well-known leader in clock craftsmanship manufacturing their line of grandfather clocks in Canada.

These days you can buy Grandfather clocks with digital movements, and some even have radio receivers that adjust themselves automatically using the international atomic clocks around the world (the most famous being the one in Greenwich, London).

Don’t want to wind your clock? Mains powered clocks are available these days too! No longer just for grandparents, contemporary grandfather clocks are available in a wide variety of styles and price ranges.

Don’t forget to check for an on line furniture sale to get your best deals!

This is an unusual 8-day endless chain tall case clock. Unusual in that most endless chain / rope cl

This is an unusual 8-day endless chain tall case clock.

Unusual in that most endless chain / rope clocks are 30 hour movements.

The movement looks to have been handmade and not manufactured professionally. The construction is similar to a Morbier movement except, in this case, both time and strike trains are lined up one behind the other. This enables them each to use the same chain to power both trains. As such, there is only one weight used on one continuous chain.

The clock’s case is exceptionally robust, made of solid oak and weighs as much as it looks.

I purchased this clock without the weight or the pendulum. The challenge was to figure out pendulum length and weight. This has not proved an easy puzzle to solve. I wanted to maintain the aesthetic of the original design and have the pendulum bob sitting in line with the peephole window set in the center of the case trunk.

There are formulas one can use to calculate pendulum length; the easiest is to count teeth on the wheels and use the following tool:

http://www.horologysource.com/CalcPendulumLength.htm

However, because this is an unconventional clock, with unconventional gear ratios (remember it is 8-day, when one would assume it is 30-hour), the formula didn’t work in this case. So, plan B.

When you take into account all the variables such as pendulum length, weight, pallet adjustment (which affects pendulum swing), optimum beat, and the weights used to power the clock, there is an infinite number of possibilities one could end up using to get the correct set-up.

I personally started by fine tuning the pallet adjustment and then I was able to get the clock in beat. At that point, I could (by trial and error) determine the correct weight to use. I like to use the least heavy weight I can get away with; in this case it was a 10lb weight.

After establishing those factors, it is then a matter of getting the correct pendulum length and bob weight. I am still working furiously to determine these specs. Trial and error. Trial and error. I am getting closer, but the challenge continues.

I have researched this clock extensively and have not been able to come up with very much information on it.

Enfield Boardroom Clock.

Enfield was purchased by Smiths; this is well documented. However, I have never been able to find out exactly when the name ‘Enfield’ stopped appearing on clocks and ‘Smith Enfield’ was used.

I have not seen another like it. If anyone reading this can enlighten me further I would appreciate the input. I have done very little to this clock other than strip down the movement and clean it.

The clock has a couple of unusual features; the top of the clock slides off like a hood and exposes the entire movement for maintenance and adjustment (very cool!). The weights, pendulum and chains are all chrome plated. This is very unusual for tall-case clocks such as this, even in the ‘art deco’ period. I have only seen chrome on wall clocks and some mantel clocks.

Of fascinating note, thanks to one of our readers, Brian, we have images of the manual for this clock.

This is one of my favorite clocks. I always wanted a Morbier clock in my collection. However, the cases that I saw on most Morbiers were so deteriorated that they were unreasonable. The solution was clear to me when I came upon this Dutch made clock.

This clock was made in Holland by a small company that manufactures handmade Morbier clocks. This one is not old…..Vintage at best. This was the perfect solution for me. I have a vintage clock with a solid oak case. The real appeal to me is the movement. It is like a miniature ‘tower clock’ movement, over-engineered and as accurate as my jewelers regulator….I love it!

(September 30, 2009) The newer movement is almost identical in design to the early Morbiers.

This simple clock is a design classic in my opinion. I think of it as the VW of clocks, a clock for the people!

A longcase clock, also tall-case clock, grandfather clock or floor clock, is a freestanding, weight-driven, pendulum clock with the pendulum held inside the tower, or waist of the case. Clocks of this style are commonly around 1.8-2.4m (6-8 feet) tall. The case often features elaborately carved ornamentation on the hood, or bonnet, which surrounds and frames the dial, or clock face. The English clockmaker William Clement is credited with the development of this form in 1670. Most longcase clocks are striking clocks, which means they sound the time on each hour or fraction of an hour.

The terms “grandfather”, “grandmother”, and “granddaughter” have been applied to longcase clocks. Although there is no specifically defined difference among these terms, the general perception seems to be that a clock smaller than 1.5m (5 feet) is a granddaughter; over 1.5m (5 feet) is a grandmother; and over 1.8m (6 feet) is a grandfather.

Cross section of a longcase clock movement without striking mechanism, mid-1800s.

The advent of the longcase clock is due to the invention of the anchor escapement mechanism around 1670. Prior to that, pendulum clock movements used an older verge escapement mechanism, which required very wide pendulum swings of about 100°.[1] Long pendulums with such wide swings could not be fitted within a case, so most clocks had short pendulums. The anchor mechanism reduced the pendulum’s swing to around 4° to 6°,[1] allowing clockmakers to use longer pendulums, which had slower “beats”. These needed less power to keep going, caused less friction and wear in the movement, and were more accurate.[1] Most longcase clocks use a “seconds” (or “Royal”[2]) pendulum, meaning that each swing takes one second. These are about a metre (39 inches) long (to the centre of the bob). This requirement for height, along with the need for a long drop space for the weights which power the clock,[3] gave rise to the design of the long narrow case.

Modern longcase clocks use a more accurate variation of the anchor escapement called the deadbeat escapement.

Most of a longcase clock’s height is used to hold the long pendulum and weights. The two chains attached to the weights and the lack of winding holes in the dial show this to be a 30-hour clock.

Traditionally, longcase clocks were made with two types of movement: eight-day and one-day (30-hour) movements. A clock with an eight-day movement required winding only once a week, while generally less expensive 30-hour clocks had to be wound every day. Eight-day clocks are often driven by two weights – one driving the pendulum and the other the striking mechanism, which usually consisted of a bell or chimes. Such movements usually have two keyholes on either side of the dial to wind each one (as can be seen in the Thomas Ross clock above). By contrast, 30-hour clocks often had a single weight to drive both the timekeeping and striking mechanisms. Some 30-hour clocks were made with false keyholes, for customers who wished that guests to their home would think that the household was able to afford the more expensive eight-day clock. All modern striking longcase clocks have eight-day movements. Most longcase clocks are cable-driven, meaning that the weights are suspended by cables. If the cable was attached directly to the weight, the load would cause rotation and untwist the cable strands, so the cable wraps around a pulley mounted to the top of each weight. The mechanical advantage of this arrangement also doubles the running time allowed by a given weight drop.

Cable clocks are wound by inserting a special crank (called a “key”) into holes in the clock’s face and turning it. Others, however, are chain-driven, meaning that the weights are suspended by chains that wrap around gears in the clock’s mechanism, with the other end of the chain hanging down next to the weight. To wind a chain-driven longcase clock, one pulls on the end of each chain, lifting the weights until the weights come up to just under the clock’s face.

[edit] Elaborate striking sequences

In the early 20th century, quarter-hour chime sequences were added to longcase clocks. At the top of each hour, the full chime sequence sounds, immediately followed by the hour strike. At 15 minutes after each hour, 1/4 of the chime sequence plays, at the bottom of each hour, half of the chime sequence plays, and at 15 minutes before each hour, 3/4 of the chime sequence plays. Almost all modern mechanical longcase clocks have at least Westminster Quarters, and many also offer the option of Whittington chimes or St. Michael’s chimes, selectable by a switch mounted on the right side of the dial, which also allows one to silence the chimes if desired. As a result of adding chime sequences, all modern mechanical longcase clocks have three weights instead of just two. The left weight provides power for the hour strike, the middle weight provides power for the clock’s pendulum and general timekeeping functions, while the right weight provides power for the quarter-hour chime sequences.

During the 19th century, two brothers named Jenkins worked as managers at the George Hotel in Piercebridge, County Durham, England. One of the brothers died and, according to the story told to Henry Clay Work in 1875, the clock (made by James Thompson) began to lose time. Repair attempts were made by the hotel staff and local clockmakers, but failed. When the other brother died at the age of 90, the clock broke down altogether, and was never repaired in remembrance of the brothers.

Work decided to write a song about the story of this clock in 1876, which he called My Grandfather’s Clock. The song became popular, and it is from this song that the current usage derives. [1]

Comtoise clocks, also known as Morbier clocks or Morez clocks, were made in the French region Franche-Comté (whence their name). Production of these clocks began in 1680 and continued for a period of about 230 years. During the peak production years (1850-1890) over 60,000 clocks were made each year.

Many Comtoise clocks can be found in France but they are also frequently found in Spain, Germany, and other parts of Europe, less in the USA. These clocks were very popular across the generations; they kept the time on farms throughout France. Many Comtoise clocks were also exported to other countries in Europe and even further, to the Ottoman Empire and as far as Thailand. The metal mechanism was usually protected by a wooden sheath.

[edit] Bornholm clocks

Bornholm clocks are Danish longcase clocks in the form of a tall wooden box. They are driven by a pendulum and were made on Bornholm from 1745 to 1900.

Bornholm clock-making began in the 1740s when an English ship, which had longcase clocks in its hold, was stranded. They were sent for repair to a turner named Poul Ottesen Arboe in Rønne and as a result of his repair of them he learned enough about clocks to begin to make his own.

The demand for Bornholm clocks has been falling in recent years.

A grandfather clock is a clock that works with a pendulum that is housed in a tall cabinet that is narrow and it stands alone.

Now a days, you can find what time it is in digital format on ovens, telephones, watches, and clocks. They are much more convenient than those old-fashioned clocks that have roman numerals on the face. However, those that have an antique grandfather clock don’t necessarily keep it its ability to keep time, but it is kept as a memory of a time gone by. These clocks have been a part of decorations, even a focal point of a room, in many homes for quite a few years.

The Antique Grandfather Clocks exist still today even though some were made in the 1600′s. Some of the clocks are worth $70,000 to $100,000. You can find these at places you would least expect them such as flea markets and newspaper ads. You can also find them at sales from estates and even auctions. If you don’t want to pay the prices of the authentic clocks, you can always buy a reproduction of the clock.

Antique grandfather clocks have a lot of personality; each one was chosen based on whether they went along with the person’s décor along with personality. Just imagine having a clock that has a history. Some survived the wars, some survived events of the house, some have belonged to famous as well as notorious people, and some have a story to tell, if it could talk. An antique grandfather clock is something that every family should have.
