t2:Echo – by Henry Daniel

Due to the fact that my schedule was quite full this past weekend along with the fact that I get quite severe motion sickness from watching 3D movies, ride films and IMAX movies, I was not able to see most of the presentations that were shown at this year’s Interactive Futures conference at Emily Carr. That being said, the one performance that I was able to see in at least some form was t2:Echo by Henry Daniel.

While I was not able to see the entire performance, due to the fact that the concourse gallery walls that were blocking my seeing most of the actual dancers’ performances. On top of this, I was also helping direct the audience members to their respective locations, facilitating their viewpoints and actively going to get benches for more vertically challenged people to stand on.

By positioning the dancers in two separate yet interlinked locations, the director was able to create a bridge between the performances. This was further articulated by the video coding and processing for telepresence technology that was used to create the concurrent ghosting effect that was seen on the wall of the ECUAD concourse gallery and the main display screen in the IDS Motion Capture studio.

The ghosting effect that was projected onto the concourse gallery wall showed the dual performances and interlaid them onto one another and provided a somewhat random video playback quality as each dancer took centre stage in front of the crowd. They also entered the stage from multiple entry points and once their rotation in each location was complete, they then ran either to or from the concourse gallery and IDS MoCap studio in order to continue their respective performances there.

I have never seen a live dance performance like this before and it was quite the sight to see, as the dancers themselves were able to glide through the space with the greatest of ease and truly encompass it. From what I could see, it was a beautiful and creative bridging of technology and human performance into a multi-faceted co-locative art piece and would enjoy seeing more performances by Henry Daniel and his accompanying dance troupe.

Nona — Italian for ninth — is a modest enoteca/osteria/ristorante in Granville (home to our rival school, Denison University). Located right on the “main drag” of the town, Nona offers a small portal back to Toscana with an Italian/English menu, the feel of an authentic Italian enoteca and a wine list that includes the famous Brunello di Montalcino and other DOCG wines.

The service was excellent and friendly, the atmosphere muted but warm and bustling and the food was life-saving. To start my roommate ordered the vegetable soup which made her eyes roll back in her head and for me the braised fennel with blood orange vinegar infused onions. Ummm ok so that all rocked pretty hard but then came our primi: for my roommate, the Sundried Tomato and Asiago Ravioli with Arugula pesto and Toasted Almond Butter and for me, the spinach and ricotta tortellini with ragu — TO DIE FOR. All the pasta is done in-house so the freshness can’t really be beat.

For the dolci, we split a gorgeous flaky pastry nest of roasted apples and balsamic gelato. Whatever, we basically had a roommate date but we had so much fun and you could not have slapped the grins off our face. I think our waitress thought we were slightly insane because we gushed at every special she told us about but whatever.

Last Friday night I stumbled upon a trio of musicians playing at the entrance to the Future Shop store at the corner of Robson and Granville. There were two saxophone players — one alto and one baritone — and a drummer with a minimalistic setup. It was a lot of fun! The music was lively and the band members were obviously enjoying themselves very much as they didn’t mind acting a little silly while they were playing.

A crowd of about 25 people gathered around the band and some danced along to the music (you really don’t want to see my “talent” in this department). One guy seemingly just passing through decided to dance “on stage” for a minute or so, the girls shouting in approval. Another passerby left another sort of tip as he balanced the centerfold of an issue of Hustler magazine on the top of the bass drum with two naked lesbians kissing. lol The band members and the audience had a good laugh; and no, the drummer didn’t loose the rhythm despite the distraction. On another song the alto saxophone player asked the audience to repeat the “lyrics”after him (I believe they were made up on the spot — part of the welcome impromptu silliness of the night). The crowd was having such a good time that it wasn’t difficult to get us to participate in the singing.

10-15 minutes later, it was time for me to go (not before leaving my biggest tip ever for a street performance). I hope we get to see more “street bands” like this one in the future. I had seen a few in Victoria a couple of years ago, but in Vancouver it’s a rare sight.

Here are the details on the two internships that I am working on this semester for my DIVA 300 class – the first being the Motion Capture Studio at Emily Carr University and the second being CODElab, a look into surveillance during the Olympics taking place here in Vancouver in 2010. Click mid_term_report_john_deveaux for a PDF download.

IDS Motion Capture Studio Internship
http://crossfitmocap.wordpress.com/
- blog setup to provide project info to participants and show progress
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=177700972600&ref=mf
- Facebook user group setup as well with video links on group wall

LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Rick’s philosophy on learning is to be fluid and allow for creative freedom
- he did not want me helping with mundane tasks such as answering email
- seeing as how he has no set schedule, he wanted to have as much fun in the process
- on his own, he would calibrate the cameras by running back and forth = boring
- having me working with him, gives him a greater chance to explore new outcomes
- “If I have to do one more damn US Marine with a machine gun walk cycle again…”
- CrossFit coaches and athletes were brought together with artists for group meeting
- much easier to learn by bringing in and suiting up actors to have them perform
- ability to work with the performers and fine tune walk cycles or isolated movements
- unfortunately, we had a major software glitch which nixed our live MoCap filming

- Rick pulled up some pre-recorded footage to show multiple data captures instead

Tonight was a great event. I was happy to bump into a few people I had met at previous HRMA events (like the Career Advancement Network’s roundtable), and of course meet some new faces.

Two of the people I met had graduated from BCIT. It always puts me at ease to meet someone else who’s survived the trenches at that great institution!

Before leaving an event, I always say a few goodbyes to people that I began conversations with, but never fully finished. As I was saying goodbye to a new friend who had completed the same 2-year HR program that I had, he kindly left me with the statement, “BCIT grads do get jobs,” and that I needed to hang in there. What a kind statement! As I move from event to event, each invitation is a reminder that I am still seeking employment.

When you take the time to put yourself through school, you cannot help but consider the opportunity cost of that decision. You know, deep down inside that every educational opportunity is valuable. Still, it`s hard to remember that fact when you`re looking for work, while others without the same credentials are already working.

The venue was an odd space. Set at Sanafir Restaurant and Lounge near Granville and Nelson, it`s a space more suited to intimate gatherings of old friends than the introduction of new business colleagues. HRMA had booked the entire top floor of the restaurant, which was decorated with large square beds on one side of a long corridor, and large tables with seating on the floor along the other. With tables on one side and beds on the other, the furniture essentially created a narrow hallway as the main space for standing and making new connections. It was awkward because space was limited; you could neither see all the participants, nor easily make physical movements between conversations.

The wait staff was wonderfully cordial and patient as they passed out canapés and took drink orders. The venue also provided a coat check area at no charge.

Overall, I think it was a great event. A refreshing venue, and wonderful company. Although I do not think that I met any one contact that will likely lead me towards a speedy end to my job search, I am certainly still happy that I attended. I always feel elated and empowered as I walk out of each networking event because at the very least, I can say that I took the time to expand my network and exercise my social skills.

Fellow Emily Carr Students, Faculty and Alumni, I want to take this opportunity to invite you to par

Fellow Emily Carr Students, Faculty and Alumni,

I want to take this opportunity to invite you to participate in a once in a lifetime opportunity. As part of my DIVA 300 course, I am doing an internship in the school’s Motion Capture studio and have been given the chance to create a collaborative cross-disciplinary project.

Elite CrossFit athletes and their coaches will be brought into the Motion Capture studio, suited up and allowed to perform extreme exercise workout routines within the studio space itself. The footage captured will serve both as a diagnostic tool to help provide real-time live data to athletes and coaches on their body dynamics as they do individual exercises, but will also be merged into an artistic format as well.

Using the overall theme of Motion Capture, each participating artist will be tasked to create their own individual art piece from a range of cross-discipline media which will then be combined with everyone else’s work to create a greater whole and then published through an ECUAD concourse gallery show down the road. In addition, on opening night we could also bring in some CrossFit athletes to also perform various exercises as a live performance piece for the audience to showcase the form of the human body.

CALL FOR ARTISTS:

We are looking for as many cross-discipline artists as we can get who want to participate in this project such as:

- 2D Animators coming into the Motion Capture studio and doing freehand gesture/motion drawings of the athletes’ performances

- 3D Animators looking for experience working within both the Motion Capture studio itself and the corresponding data pipeline to transfer the information gathered from the studio to their 3D applications (Maya, XSI)

- Film Producers and Editors to work with the Animators to create finalized video pieces

- DJs and Musicians to work with the film makers and animators to produce musical scores for their video pieces

- Sound Designers to record the athletes’ performances to provide sound effect recordings to the film makers and 3D animators

- Photographers doing photo-documentation of the process setting up the space and wanting to pursue studies of the human form via the athletes’ performances

- Painters, Sculptors and Visual Artists who would like to incorporate Motion Capture into their respective art practices, paintings and sculptures

- Processing and Arduino programmers who want to work with the data capture and create cross-discipline art pieces with it

- Graphic Designers working on creating the polish and identity of the project as a whole and combining everyone’s individual contributions within the overall theme of, “Motion Capture”

- find us on Facebook

This blog and Facebook group have been setup so that everyone will have access to all of the necessary information for the project along with detailed videos on what exactly CrossFit is and possible artistic avenues to explore with the data that we collect from the shoot:

- Initial group meeting is taking place on Monday, October 26th at 12pm

- We will be meeting outside of the Emily Carr University Intersections Digital Studios (Room 285)

- Nathalie De Los Santos, or I will then lead you and the rest of the student artists into the Motion Capture Studio for the presentation.

- Even if you feel that you do not have the time to take on this project, please feel free to pass on any ideas or artistic suggestions or movements that you think would be great to explore!!!

- I will be videotaping Monday’s meeting and publishing the video to both the Blog and Facebook group page so don’t worry if cannot attend, but please RSVP with either myself or Nathalie beforehand if you are going to join us.

Norman McLaren made this film in 1968, well before the time of Final Cut Pro and computer software. Optical printers were used to create the ghosting effect. Imagine how much time and effort went into creating this timeless animated film, which even today, simply amazes me!

Hey everybody,

Last week, I spent time with Chris Kayler and Joe Rossbach photographing fall foliage in the Green Mountains of Vermont! The color was excellent up there, and it rained just about every day, providing almost perfect conditions for photographing the colorful foliage, rushing streams, and beautiful waterfalls that the Green Mountains are so famous for having.

Here’s a shot I made on a rainy day at Moss Glen Falls. Moss Glen Falls is truly one of the most beautiful waterfalls I’ve had the chance to photograph so far. I spent hours and hours there photographing it from every possible angle I could come up with. Here’s a favorite.

Hello.

Today while my beloved and I waited in line for Excited, two happy girls went down to Granville with big poster announcing FREE HUGS. True to their poster, they gave free hugs to anyone who wanted. These girls shared their happiness with everyone.

My Chris stands happily in line, enjoying the sun (and his tickets).

I think that all day today was like a big free hug for me. A sunny gorgeous day. A cool, funny film. I found Excited very accurately portrayed how I see Canada, and Vancouver. A multi-cultural society, living in love and harmony. A helpfull and very supportive family gathering together to share important events–from meeting their son’s new girlfriend, to discussing his sexual problem. Gabrielle Rose brought her own unique interpretation to the part of ‘mom,’ making for an unforgettable performance.

Charming Cam Cronin and inimitable Gabrielle Rose.

The film shows beautiful views of the city, ocean, sun and rain. And of course one of the lovely character is Loki the dog))). It is important Vancouver’s character. I have never seen any other city with so many dogs.

Excited is a good comedy. And, like a free hug, it gives good energy, positive emotions… and a little piece of Vancouver.

I got my picture with "Excited" star.

And I got a free smile and photo with charming Cam Cronin, the talented actor who dealt with a delicate subject in a touching and humble manner, in the movie.

I’ll be looking for Excited on DVD…and so should you!

Thanks to everybody for this day!

Now I am going to chek if Chris is ready for hugging )))

To see you.

INTERNSHIP OUTCOMES
I want to incorporate CrossFit athletes and coaches into the Motion Capture Studio to serve both as a diagnostic tool to help provide real-time live data to athletes and coaches on their body dynamics as they do individual exercises, but to also merge this data into an artistic format as well.

I would like to work with some of the animation students at Emily Carr and create 3D character avatars which could then be animated with the motion capture data recorded from the original athletes to either match their actual likenesses or go really crazy and make the avatars look completely different (ie: men becoming women, humanoid looking animals, aliens…you name it).

I ran my idea by Rick on Monday and he said it would be great to work together on a collaborative project so that I could have an actual self-directed portfolio piece at the end of my internship, rather than just work on other peoples/companies’ projects. In addition, the owner and coaches at CrossFit are also very interested in what the Motion Capture Studio could provide to help enable their athletes propel themselves even further.

CODElab Internship

OVERVIEW
CODElab will be a large-scale participatory new media artwork that will coincide with the Olympic and Para-Olympic Games from February 5th to 22nd, 2010 and be part of the larger CODELive event going on throughout the Vancouver area. Live capture nodes will be installed throughout Granville Island where visitors will be able to interact with artist and student facilitators via custom-designed balloon cams, umbrella cams, shoe cams and the like will record, transmit and present video with nontraditional perspectives and cutting-edge visuality.

WHAT THIS ALL MEANS
- evolving process – the project guidelines will be set by the group
- roving, moving capture nodes for CODELab between the observer and the observed
- bodystorming vs. brainstorming – quickly create a conceptual idea and take it into the public sphere and test it out to see if it will actually work
- who will be our audience – project workers, ECUAD, Granville Island, Vancouver residents, 2010 Olympic visitors, the interwebz…
- orange and white colour scheme was decided upon for CODELab
- orange is significant of colour coded terrorist alert / being on alarm (CODE ORANGE)
- orange is the rabbit hole to engage the audience and bring them in further once they more and more CODELab orange coloured objects

PROJECT DELIVERABLES
http://delicious.com/search?p=codelab+ecu&chk=&context=main|&fr=del_icio_us&lc=
- setup a delicious site to bookmark important corresponding information
- a project Wiki site is being developed as a base for final outcomes and data captures

INTERNSHIP OUTCOMES
I had the opportunity to see the artists’ previous project, GLOCAL, at the Surrey Art Gallery last year and was absolutely blown away at what they had achieved. I hope to get hands-on experience and knowledge on building an immense data capture project and to further visualize it with Processing so that I can create and expand my own projects to their full potential.

A French town has banned circus elephants from bathing at its beaches over concerns the animals

A French town has banned circus elephants from bathing at its beaches over concerns the animals’ excrement could pollute the water and pose a health hazard to other swimmers.

Last year, elephants from one of the circuses that tour many French towns in the summer months were allowed on to the beach at Granville, in Normandy, to exercise and paddle in the waves.

But inspectors checking water quality found traces of their droppings in the sea and issued a warning over health standards at the beach, which is popular with French and foreign holidaymakers.

“Circuses are more than welcome,” said Roland Huet, an official at Granville’s town hall. “But this year the rules governing their stay clearly specify they cannot allow any animals, including elephants, to bathe on our beaches because of the risk of pollution,” he added.

Granville is particularly susceptible to this type of contamination due to its sheltered location in the bay of Mont Saint Michel, according to Huet.

A repeat of last year’s incident would prompt the closure of the beach and could seriously damage Granville’s reputation as a seaside resort.

“Imagine having to explain to thousands of holidaymakers that the beach has been closed due to animal droppings,” he said.

http://ercus.fr

Nice sugar pieces in amazing shapes to add to coffee, tea or any hot drink.

Set up in Granville France, Ercus is a small business specializing in the production of moulded sugar. Ercus uses traditionnal production methods which are perfect to satisfy a creative spirit and to meet their customers’ specific demand.

I have a list of the top 20 places I’d like to travel to, and honestly it’s much more the 20. 1 of those locations was Vancouver in the province of British Columbia, Canada. I had heard many great things about this beautiful city, including the wide variety of things to see, friendly people, hip urban downtown scene, and the quality of it’s food, mainly it’s Chinese food. With a greater Vancouver population of around 2.1 million people, the most recognizable minority are the Chinese residents who roughly encompass around 30% of the population. In some areas of Vancouver, their numbers increase to 50% of the population like in the suburb of Richmond. I got a chance to eat in Richmond on my last night at a famous street called Alexandra road, or “Food Street”, which hosted some 200+ restaurants, mainly Asian themed.

After my first two days of work, setting up editing systems and running cables for Pivotal Post Productions, I got a chance to tour the city starting with the University of British Columbia. My parents had told me about a really nice museum at the UBC which displayed some very cool totem poles and other exhibits from Canada’s native residents. The Museum of Anthropology was definitely a cool museum, but unfortunately the outside walking village was under construction at the time. I walked around campus and then jumped back on the public transportation, which seemed relatively clean, safe, and on time. Public transportation, just another thing I admire about larger foreign cities who have found ways to make it work for their daily lives and transportation between home, school, and work.

Aside from the museums, the city of Vancouver also has a few other features that I was very surprised to see. Local community gardens fill areas off main streets which have flowers, vegetables, and benches for people to enjoy the large sunflowers towering above them. These community run gardens are a great idea to add something more then just a park with grass and trees. I really enjoyed looking at all the vegetables and variety of plants that they had growing among them. Another feature about Vancouver was the architecture around the city. Modern in places, like Yaletown, where trendy lofts and restaurants fill the streets with young professionals looking for some nightlife. Or the Granville street walking mall, currently under construction, but filled with tons of music goers, bar hoppers, and hostel kids. Definitely a street to people watch, or get a bite to eat, or see a performing band. Then the mood changes sometimes with historic looking buildings like the Vancouver Public Library, looking like the Colosseum of Rome. Across the street from my modern glass skyrise the Sheraton at Wall Centre, an ancient brick St. Paul’s Hospital sits awaiting screaming ambulances. Continuing down Burrard, you run into the popular shopping district of Robson street, where 100’s of shops, restaurants, and people fill the streets. Even further down, you finally run into the water and the interesting white canopy structures of the Canada Place. This hosts the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre, Pan Place hotel, Vancouver’s World Trade Centre, and a large IMAX theatre. It also accepts the Cruise ships as they dock on the waterfront on or to Alaska. With many other buildings around Vancouver, even more are currently being built as the city will be hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics where hundreds of thousands of athletes and people from around the world will make their way to this lovely city.

Among all this Vancouverism, it’s nice to get away to some greenery. Well you’re in luck. Just a bit north of downtown, starts Stanley Park. This 1000 acre park named after Lord Stanley, yes the same person that created Hockey’s Stanley Cup, fills the area with beaches, an outlining pathway for running or biking, the Vancouver Aquarium, and much more. North of the park, the beautiful Lion’s Gate Bridge, or the First Narrows Bridge, stretches across the Burrard Inlet to reach North Vancouver. We took this bridge on our way up to the Grouse mountains and the Capilano Suspension bridge. Unfortunately it was cloudy that day, so we skipped the Grouse mountain skyride to the top, which I later found out cost $38!! The Capilano bridge tour wasn’t much better, at an inflated $30 for the walkthrough. With over 800,000 visitors a year, they’re not hurting too bad during these economic times. :-)

On top of the tourist stuff, I did happen upon the 5th annual Motorcycle Gastown Show and Shine. This event on August 16th had 100’s of bikes lined up and down the street. Concept bikes, Harley Davidsons, BMW’s, Hondas, and more. 1000’s of people walked the streets getting photos of their favorite bikes. Down below are just a few of my favorites including the $300,000 concept bike, the Kill Bill bike, and I even saw one with a keg on the back of it. Gastown also has it’s famous Steam Powered clock, which rang every 15 minutes with tooting steam horns and all.

I also got to venture over to Granville Island, where the foot ferries took you over for $2.50 to this amazing little island of shops, restaurants, and more. Inside the Public Market sat tons of little fruit and vegetable vendors, butchers, pasta makers, cake makers, photographers, and a food court. This was definitely the place to check out if you like farmers markets.

As 8 days came to a close, I had enjoyed my time and my dining. The food was as excellent as the sites, and I would highly recommend anyone to go visit there. With a few last recommendations of eating establishments, I can only say I would definitely like to return. A few good places I found to eat were:

Breakfast at Tim Horton’s: Donuts, Sandwiches, and Coffee. Best Blueberry Donut I’ve ever had.
Dinner at The Keg: Amazing steakhouse, great martini’s, and some tasty port wines.
Dinner and drinks at Milestones: Great entrees and this amazing House frozen Bellini.
Dinner and drinks at Earl’s: Another popular Canadian chain, plenty of atmosphere, drink specials, and good food. The Raspberry Mojito was amazing!!
Coffee at Blendz: They are everywhere, you can’t miss one.
Sushi: I think I saw sushi on every block, seriously!! If you like Sushi, then you’ll find plenty!
A Hotdog from the hotdog stand at Japadog: As seen on TV, many celebrities also come here, always a line, this place has Japanese Style hotdogs, complete with Mayo, Teriyaki, and Fried Seaweed.
Dim Sum: I ate some great Dim Sum at a place called Golden Phoenix Chinese Seafood Restaurant. Tons of good food and it only cost us $10 each.
Poutine: Have it if you can find it. It’s French Fries, with Cheese Curds, covered in Gravy!! Yes, a heart attack waiting to happen.

Don’t worry Vancouver, I’ll be back.

I have officially finished up the two sets of Granville and linen potholders I’ve been talking about. I’m so in love with them and want to keep them all for myself but I don’t have a kitchen and don’t *ahem* do much cooking or baking. So off to the shop they go.

But first comes the arduous task of figuring out how much to charge. I’m no good at this part. I generally rely on friends and family—which isn’t always helpful because they think me and everything I make is priceless.

While researching potholders I found these two adorable items on Etsy: here and here. You must check them out. But don’t buy them because I want them for my imaginary kitchen.

The company was formed in April 2009.
