I recently found this business card at parents house that my dad made before I was even born. This was all hand drawn with pens, and with letter transfers and then photographed for print, as there were no computers back then. Pretty awesome. I love the little phone!

Design is both service oriented and self serving. It is an effective, dangerously effective, tool in

Design is both service oriented and self serving. It is an effective, dangerously effective, tool in delivering a message. Politically speaking, it is the most powerful tool available. More powerful than Broadcast or Radio both of which require more support, more money, money insistence than a design’s ability to impregnate and imprint upon the human psyche a core message. We have as designers, roughly 70 years of techniques, vocabulary and exposure to render messages as subtle as ghosts and as present as fear. Used benevolently or malevolently, designers are, in fact, THE interpretive component of distributed information. Regardless of the business activity. Regardless of the client. Regardless of the point.

Given the number of concerted efforts to create opinion, designers also have a interesting responsibility. To inform. They are adept in spotting messages in full flight, articulate their flight paths, and are keenly poised to shadow the trajectory. Disinformation, you see, is so well scrolled within a designer’s pen, that application of their talent can unravel the efforts of any other. Often inscribing less than truthful positioning as your war token – I was here.

Design also provides “value mechanisms” which establish emotional connections and their vocabulary, the dialog, between brand and person. A marketer and copywriter can and do provide directives; the punch, the hooks drawing interest within the consumer while distracting them from other activities. However, the designer’s tool sets impregnate and permeates so thoroughly on so many levels, that this information – it can be proven – it can be proven – is a stock pile intended to create a consumer psyche for marketing use.

Triggers. We assemble behaviors, reactions and the processes which later become consumer intuition. These are our tool marks. This is how pervasive our activity has been within the american psyche. Being honest, honesty, and honest messaging, therefore, it is no surprise, is a parenthetical condition we’ve created for associating values with implied principle. Designers, copywriters and marketing specialist particularly within the advertising industry know this.

Can we be forgiven? Should we be forgiven? What other vehicles do we posses that have the ability to create, sway, absorb, disseminate and provide for public awareness and health on such a massive and fluid scale.

Although messaging can change, is effectiveness the intended design, to continually render an american psyche. Or are these permanently drawn scars intended for redress within the continuum of capital democracy. Is the goal to provide for the interpretation of american principles through business activities, as a result of aging societies. Is continuing its legacy the responsibility of business and industry - to use labor as a mechanism to engrain self identity. Or is the catalyst for this responsibility unrest, unemployment, and the resultant political activity. If so, then scars they are. Scars they must be. Are these the only methods ensuring the adoption, articulation, and the expressive outlet, domestically speaking, of America’s principles and values.

Looking back on design, mass communication, corporate growth, capitalism, the expansion of our markets and the invited competition, propaganda seems so far away. So far back within our history that it begs question of purpose, accountability, and reason. Given the social problems; civil unrest, hunger, disease, education, violence, crime, unemployment, and anger; anger towards the immigrant, anger towards the rich, anger towards the poor, anger towards politics, anger towards the aging, anger towards the young, its very difficult not to feel responsible given our propaganda roots. You may be 80 years old. You may be as young as 15 years old. Given the strength of our industry in communicating message, its difficult, if not, impossible not to feel accountable, responsible for these conditions existing. Graphic/information design has been used by both sides, the people and governments to change society.

There are visible signs when change insists. Fires of the emotionally scared igniting in all directions. Aflame in small-group conversations. Depressions along the backbone of the United States. Violence within cities. They begin within labor, where values and principles were to be sewn. Where jobs intended to secure whole communities mobilized and vacated rejecting the then political propositions. Occurring sin.

Many of us do not know this, that, as these fires ignite in one community exhausting its source: hope, ambition, and reason, young embers jump to another ethnicity. Instinctually revealing the problem universally. There is no defense for what we do to the american psyche. We were the defense. We were to provide jobs. We were to construct layers of opportunities, so that as one family like all other families build america, the system through which a young man a young woman could learn, apply, and form the resounding confidence of self worth, value, and contribution is secure. For their generation. For the following generation, for the younger who look to them for support.

Many of us do not hear of this. But as these fires are quenched, there remain a few smoldering embers concealing the wound. Statistics revealing the last wave which took a number of youiths. Through violence, addictions and depression. Our American system of hope, foundation, concern, warrant, and effect has long failed to address change and the despair that besets them.

Post No Bills began appearing when I could understand, 1970’s. Were you to investigate this, you would find it not unlike a tombstone. One which said, never again, our communication lines for social change are open. One which said, we needn’t rely on civil strife, again, the violence, which affected so many of us over the then last 20 years. One which said, also with certainty, this is a warning to you artists, designers, hippies, givers, fluent activists, your ability is not appreciated. Post no Bills.

Post Change.

The new identity for Aol. put together by Wolff Olins was released a couple days ago ( I caught it on Silicon Alley Insider). You can see some of the variations below.

Overall, I think it’s an improvement. It’s more approachable and the “.” while a little gimmicky allows for easy brand extensions. For me though, the questions first and foremost is WIIFM. I never bought into the original AOL and my almost 70-year-old father just dumped them.

I hope that what they deliver beyond this initial display will be more than the gold fish (which usually die), the rock on sign (usually indicating severe in inebriation), the pretty pink flotsam (which is probably going to clog something), and the scribble (see number 2).

Here is another “birthday shirt” that I finished this week for my friend, Melissa. Her daughter, Morgan, is having a karaoke sleepover and she wanted to have shirts printed for the girls. The design shows a microphone and the text, “I rocked it at Morgan’s 11th Birthday Bash!” I screen-printed 13 hot pink shirts with black ink.

I chose to do the crayola factory in Pennsylvania, since I had been there when I was younger and thought it would be a fun, yet different place. Two years later in collage, I decided to revisit the project to make it look better. The older version had some pixelation and readability issues. I’m happy with my design. The concept was a large crayon box with the information on the crayon sleeves which come out. I scanned in a crayon box and fixed some rips and crayon marks. i then added contact information to the botom. The trickiest part was creating the word FACTORY. The box originally said CRAYONS and I rearranged the letters, and used existing letters to create ones I didn’t have.

“The cliché that designers don’t read—aside from being insulting—is, however, entirely plausible since graphic design(ing) doesn’t really require reading, or so word on the street goes. But this is a rather threatening misperception as it challenges our intellectual, cultural and critical commitment. In addition, it categorizes us as an intellectually bankrupt superfluous bunch. Yet the claim is not entirely without merit, because graphic designers don’t read enough—about graphic design, that is.”

Thank goodness the sun is finally coming out in Vancouver! It’s been raining a lot in the last

Thank goodness the sun is finally coming out in Vancouver! It’s been raining a lot in the last two weeks and it’s simply gor-jus today!

I finally created a twitter account ! I know – it’s been around for a few years and pretty much everyone has an account. As some of you who read this post – I’m on a job hunt. So far, it’s been ok. I’ve had two job interviews in the past week and waiting to hear back from another one. I’m currently using recruiter as well, but the verdict is out on that way for now.

Anyway, I’m bringing up twitter because since I’m into blogging (albeit sporadically) I felt I needed to create a twitter account as well. Which in turn is a tool to help me in my job search. Nothing really concrete has materialised – but I’ve also seen/tagged other resources of design/typography/style/fashion etc. I’ve seen some pretty amazing stuff so far!

I’m a lover of typography (amongst other things) but typography is a fine art form. Incorrect kerning, inappropriate typeface for work and/or a fugly typeface can ruin the communication message and brand. I’m in awe of typography designers who are able to execute this form flawlessly.

Found this site via Curious and Android (note to self: need to change my wordpress theme ). Check out the latest from Axel Peemöller who designed underground signage for a way-finding-system for the eureka tower carpark, melbourne (with Emery Studio). **LOVE** the simplicity of Helvetica with the superimposed lettering (you cannot miss where to go). Check it out yo!

Not only have I a new range of fabrics for the xmas fair at Islington Mill but a new range of Christmas cards as well. I’m not sure if I will save their premiere viewing for next Sunday or if I will provide a sneak peek here. If you’re desperate to order cards, get in touch.

This stitching for a piece for Philip Lim is especially perfect.

When my school started their own podcast I was asked to come up with the logo and artwork that would be used on iTunes and the podcast’s website.

The idea for a podcast had been bounced around years before, and again I was asked to come up with a logo. Unfortunately, said logo was lost in the great virus of 2007. The 2009 logo is however in use on the podcast’s website, as well as iTunes.

I created the logo using a mixture of overlays and masks as well as brushes obtained from deviantart.com, and dafont.com. I was aiming for gritty, something that looked as though it was rooted in an urban setting.
