De geschiedenis van China is in het Westen zo goed als onbekend. Ik heb er destijds op school in ieder geval nooit iets over gehoord, behalve dan hoe vreselijk het Chinees (en Russisch) communisme wel was. Zelfs nu China toch redelijk ‘hot’ is, gaat men meestal niet verder terug dan het huidig regime en wordt het gedrag van de Chinees vooral hierdoor verklaard, terwijl het huidig bestuur nog relatief jong is als men het totaalplaatje van de Chinese geschiedenis bekijkt.
De invloed van bijvoorbeeld confucianisme en taoïsme is niet te onderschatten, ook vandaag nog. Sommigen beweren ook dat Mao Zedong niet zo heel anders was dan de keizers die hem voorafgingen (Zijn beeld staat in de toeristenwinkeltjes ook vaak zij aan zij met die keizers).

En voor je hier gaat lopen, neen, ik ga geen geschiedenisles geven Alleen even melden dat er verschillende dynastieën zijn geweest, dat keizer Qin ooit China heeft verenigd. In zijn graf, in de buurt van de stad Xi’an, zijn de overbekende terracottasoldaten gevonden (hier een foto van souvenirsoldaatjes in een etalage).

En wat ikzelf tot voor kort niet wist, ook latere keizers hadden “ventjes” in hun graf.
Dat was de reden van ons bezoek aan de stad Xuzhou. In die streek zijn niet alleen een aantal graven teruggevonden, er is ook een bijzonder interessant museum. De inhoud daarvan was trouwens deels afwezig omdat de stukken nu in Brussel liggen n.a.v. Europalia.
De beelden zijn een pak kleiner dan die in Xi’an (die zijn zo groot als een mens), ze zijn wel bijzonder schattig, je kan er veel dichter bij komen én je bent zo wat de enige bezoeker van de site. Dat viel dus niet tegen!

This past weekend, I took my first volunteer photos of a gravesite for another user of the Find-A-Grave web site. For anyone who is interested in family history but hasn’t been to this site yet, I highly recommend you give it a visit.

On this site, which is free to join/peruse, users can post photos of gravesites of family members and others, along with biographical information. It’s a treasure trove for genealogists. I’ve found several unknown-to-me relatives by browsing relatives of ancestors with memorials on the site.

Users can build virtual cemeteries on the site, which can contain memorials for relatives, etc., even if they are actually buried in many different cemeteries. This is a handy way to keep track of far-flung ancestral burial sites.

I visited Woodlawn Memorial Park in Easton, Md., Saturday to take gravesite photos at the request of another user. If you live far away from the burial site(s) of family members, you can make a similar request of others in the area of the cemetery where your relative is buried. Their photos may allow you to “visit” a grave you may not otherwise have the chance to see.

Headstones often have quite a bit of information that can be handy for family history research (birth and death dates, names, nearby graves of relatives, etc). However, these facts should always be confirmed using other records as mistakes are often made in the production of headstones.

20.11.2009 – Glauchau, Alte Spinnerei

Wie schon früher beschrieben, hatte ich an diesem Abend die Wahl zwischen verschiedenen Konzerten. Ich habe mich dann für Nile & Co. entschieden, weil ich sowohl Nile als auch Krisiun zu meinen Lieblingsbands zähle.

Vor diesen Höhepunkten waren natürlich noch ein paar andere Bands dran, als erstes Corpus Mortale aus Dänemark. Für den Anfang solider Death Metal mit US-Kante. Ansonsten erinnere ich mich nicht mehr an vieles, was nicht damit zu tun hat, dass die Band vielleicht schlecht wäre, sondern daran, dass der Abend noch lang war. So ein Opener hat’s eben schwer.

Mehr hängengeblieben ist da schon vom Ulcerate-Auftritt. Der Technical/Progressive Death Metal von Ulcerate ist doch etwas vertrackter, als es anscheinend die meisten unvorbereiteten Zuschauer (inklusive mir) erwartet haben – die Reaktionen des Publikums sind auf jeden Fall noch relativ verhalten. Gut sind die Vier aus Neuseeland trotzdem, ich würde mir das Ganze eben nur mal gerne in Ruhe zu Hause aus der Konserve anhören. Die neuste CD von Ulcerate habe ich deshalb erst mal auf meine Einkaufsliste gesetzt.

Über Grave gibt’s eigentlich wenig zu sagen, sie spielen an diesem Abend eben das, was sie schon seit über 20 Jahren spielen: Schweden-Tod der alten Schule. Das wirkte sehr routiniert, an besondere Höhepunkte erinnere ich mich nicht, aber immerhin lädt es sehr zum Bangen ein. Deshalb war wohl auch zum ersten Mal an diesem Abend etwas mehr Action vor der Bühne.

Und dann endlich: der brasilianische Familienbetrieb Krisiun. Ihre Alben zeichnen sich für mich durch ihre brutalen, Blastbeat-getriebenen Death Metal-Gemetzel aus, die aber dank der musikalischen Fähigkeiten der drei Brüder nie zu simplem Gehacke verkommen. Und genau das bringen sie auch live. Das Publikum hat das mit fleißigem Kopfschütteln und einem kleineren Mosh Pit belohnt. Bejubelt werden durfte natürlich auch das ein oder andere Solo von Gitarrist Moyses. Und überhaupt war’s wieder mal viel zu schnell vorbei.

Nile machen sehr feine Musik, “In Their Darkened Shrines” oder “Black Seeds of Vengeance” hole ich immer wieder gerne aus dem Regal. Live konnten sie natürlich wieder mal zeigen, was sie draufhaben. Obwohl es ja meist dasselbe ist, wenn ich Nile live sehe: übermäßig viel los ist meist nicht im Publikum – vielleicht sind einfach alle mit Glotzen und Staunen beschäftigt. Kein Wunder, besonders wenn Karl Sanders richtig loslegt. Es gab aber glücklicherweise kein sinnloses Gefrickel zu hören, sondern böse und bedrohlich wirkende Songs, drückend und brachial dargeboten. Dallas Toler-Wade war offenbar richtig gut aufgelegt und sorgte zwischendurch noch für ein bisschen Publikumsanimation, besonders bei Black Seeds of Vengeance zum Schluß.

Nile ist einfach nur mächtig beeindruckend. Beim nächsten Mal bin ich wieder dabei.

Wedged between Albert and Lawrence, right across from young Judith with good old Eddy in the corner sunlight glinted across the shells covering the pile of sand. I had dressed up in my Sunday clothes for another visit. Last time had provided me with some answers and I longed for more.

I was struck by the feeling of peace that came over me which was a nice retreat from the waves of panic I had experienced the entire day. It occurred to me that losing love is a lot like losing a loved one except that it does not have a headstone in a pretty field in a quiet part of town.

When sadness is drawing you in like quicksand it can be impossible to look ahead and see what is still there. With the wind rustling the leaves it was almost as if the headstones were whispering to me. To not spend my time among those who have left but on those who were left behind.

I don’t know what people think about the story of the Amityville haunting, whether it’s true or not, but check out this picture that was taken during an investigation of the house. It appears to clearly show the face of a small boy peering out of a doorway. The investigators at the time had set up a camera and tripod to photograph the same area every so often and that is what they caught on film. When the image showed up the investigators said that no children were present during the investigation. It is thought that it could be the spirit of John DeFeo, who was 9 when he was killed in 1974 (see pic below right), along with his parents and most of his siblings, by older brother Ronald DeFeo Jr. He now sits in prison serving 6 life sentences and the current owners have stated repeatedly they have no problems with the house. Personally I don’t believe the stories of it being haunted, but the picture below still gives me the chills. Thanks for reading.

This wasn't how it was suppose to end!

Two sisters from Stockholm, Sweden are hoping to sue the group of drunk undertakers who accidentally dropped their father’s coffin on it’s side into the grave. And what I mean by dropped is, it landed with such a thud the two women ran crying and screaming from the cemetery fearing their father had fallen out of the casket. The two were in so much shock they aren’t even sure if the coffin was righted before it was covered or whether, if daddy had fallen out, he was put back in. Both sisters have been on sick leave ever since the incident.

Psst How did they manage to find a group of drunk undertakers?

The flower urn in the centre of the grave has the inscription

“In Loving Memories Mother and Dad”.

I went out on the night of Halloween to a house in Winston-Salem that decorates like crazy (it is located at the corner of Watson Ave. and Gaston St.).  I had not been by in a few years, and decided to check it out as well as play around with my D300s a little and push its limits in the dark to see how it performed.  I must say I was happy with the results, but you can be the judge.

All of these were shot at 6400 ISO which is as high as she goes.

This last one was in front of another house down the street. Looks strait out of a horror film.

I figured since I am constantly getting either chats/emails sent my way or stumbling across random articles and videos, I should post them for my beloved followers! Well, here is your list today.

I found her beneath a huge silver-fir, covered in autumn leaves. I told her the colours looked good on her. I looked down at the flowers, plants and drawings the family had brought her. Though it was a harsh autumn morning I felt surrounded by love.

I talked about the past couple of days, weeks, even months. She never once said anything back but I realised a few things while standing in the autumn rain. It is not important why things happen, it is only important how you cope with them. And just because something hurts so much right now, it does not mean it is not the right thing to do.

One of the few times we had been alone she had told me she was so tired. I told her I hoped she had found rest. The last thing she asked me before she died, was what she was supposed to do. I told her I hoped she had found the answer.

And also, if she would know what I am supposed to do now, would she please tell me…

Louth is a small farming settlement on the banks of the darling River in western New South Wales.

In Louth cemetery is the 126 year old grave of Mary Mathews. Every year at sunset, on the birthday of Mary Mathews, a beam of light strikes the headstone and shines directly on the door of the house she lived in.

Howdy, howdy, howdy!

This post it based on a true story. That sounds too serious. How about, this post is based on a totally terrific and awesome story that happened to me a li’l while ago. Much better.

(This happened a while ago, btw)

It was a magical Sunday. My dad had come home from las vegas. He gave me a little gift. Apparantly, his friend from new york had brought some gifts for his co-workers. My dad was one of them, and he recieved this little mini-kit to evacuate and assemble a dinosaur skeleton. He gave it to me, and I got to work right away. What they do is, they give you a little block (a grave, technically), and you’re supposed to dig up the bones in it. They give you a think wooden stick thingy, that you can dig with, and they also give you a brush.

After digging up all of the parts, you’re supposed to put the pieces together to form a dinosaur, pretty cool, huh?

Unfortunately, I couldn’t exactly…put..it…together. Shame on me, shame on me, I know. But it’s not that easy! The worst part is, I think I might have accidentally thrown away some pieces of the skeleton with the dust from the grave. Suckish? I know. I can’t really say I’m happy about it either…Anyway, I’m planning to keep the bones in my room, until I can find a solution!
