Kate Langenburg/A&E Groove Because people know that I loooove to read, I am often the recipient

Kate Langenburg/A&E Groove

Because people know that I loooove to read, I am often the recipient of books that “you absolutely have to read.” Today’s post is about the latest book I’ve been given, and it does, in fact, fall into that category.

When I was first loaned the book South of Broad by Pat Conroy, I didn’t know what to expect. I had never read anything by the author, so it was a real shot in the dark for me. At the beginning of the book, I was drawn in by its charm, very likeable main character named Leo King, and the easiness that comes with Conroy’s writing style.

Pat Conroy's latest book is a must-read!

Here’s a brief synopsis: We meet Leo King and he introduces us to his lovely town of Charleston. He is a paper delivery boy whose life is changed during one summer when he meets the people he will remain friends with for the rest of his life. All of his friends are plagued by certain obstacles in their own lives, such as racial identity, family issues, and discovering who they are.

The book travels in between Leo’s past as a child with his friends and the present, during which he is a leading columnist for the Charleston newspaper he once delivered on the foot of many people’s doorsteps. One of his friends, Trevor, has gone missing in the present and they all travel out to San Fransisco to find him and save him — the awful truth is that he is dying of AIDS.

In their traveling, the friends discover new emotions and relationships with each other. However, the whole time they are there, they are being stalked by Trevor and his sister Sheba’s father, who intends to kill them. The story weaves in and out between San Fransisco, Charleston, past and present from there.

This book was truly great; a rare gem amongst fiction books. It makes you become incredibly engrossed in it’s story. So engrossed, probably, that you will put other things off just to lock yourself in a nice comfy reading place to finish it. But hey, that doesn’t sound like such a bad idea to me!

I just finished a great book called The Kids Are All Right. I would recommend it if you like non-fiction about other peoples’ lives.

The four Welch children were living a normal, upper middle-class life in upstate New York until their father was killed in a car accident. Not long after his death, their mother informed the kids that she had cancer. This book is a first-hand account written by the siblings of what happened to each of them as they were separated. It’s tragic but not without some humor.

I’m so glad for the Welchs that they’ve all grown up to be successful and have taken the time to tell their story, but it is a frightening thing to think of these four young souls, who once had a picture perfect family, losing both of their parents and having to figure out their own way in the world. Made me grateful that I don’t have a kid! -K

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince released some days ago. What else could be a better idea to celebrate this with an article. As each series went on by Harry, the boy working as servant for his uncle and aunt in sweaty clothes grew up to be a mature and great wizard of all times apart from becoming one of the greatest characters evolved in the entire history.

1

“To the well organized mind, death is but the next great adventure. It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and darkness, nothing more“.

It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.

3

“Remember Cedric. Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice between what is right and what is easy, remember what happened to a boy who was good, and kind, and brave, because he strayed across the path of Lord Voldemort. Remember Cedric Diggory”.

4
Humans have a knack for choosing precisely the things that are worst for them.

I seem to remember telling you both that I would have to expel you if you broke any more school rules,” said Dumbledore. Ron opened his mouth in horror. “Which goes to show that the best of us must sometimes eat our words?”

7

Harry, I owe you an explanation,” said Dumbledore. “An explanation of an old man’s mistakes. For I see now that what I have done, and not done, with regard to you, bears all the hallmarks of the failings of age. Youth cannot know how age thinks and feels. But old men are guilty if they forget what it was to be young…and I seem to have forgotten lately.”

8

You fail to recognize that it matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be.

9

It is important to fight, and fight again, and keeps fighting, for only then can evil be kept at bay, though never quite eradicated.

10

It is a curious thing, Harry, but perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. Those who, like you, have leadership thrust upon them, and take up the mantle because they must, and find to their own surprise that they wear it well.

Harry Potter and the seven series have simply brought about great changes within me as you making life better and easier to live with great qualities and milestones to be achieved. Strive hard to get those on your life to have the happiest moments in your life!

The Passing of Michael Jackson

I have received many emails and phone calls from various people and organizations asking for a comment on the passing of Michael Jackson (”Al-hamdu Lillaah, innaa Lillaahi wa innaa ilayhi raaji’oon“ (‘Praise be to Allaah, Verily To Allah We belong, and to Him is our return’) and whether or not he was a Muslim. For some of you, you know that Michael was close to Islam, many of his advisors were/are Muslims and have been for years. He was always a guest of the various royal families, and has Muslims in his family. It was stated that he had taken his Shahada as recently as 6 months ago during a recording session. I have refrained from saying anything definitive for the following reasons and it gives me an opportunity to address some other issues that have disturbed me for many years about Muslims and the state of our collective iman and practice of this deen. First, the family has requested that everyone respect their grieving and privacy at this time and who are we to demand answers of/to such a personal and private nature at ANY time! Next, was he Muslim? Allahu Alim!!! Whether he was or not, did he live in such a way that you would know it? Whether his lifestyle exhibited it or not, if he chose to live in such a way that you would not know, or felt that he wasn’t, wasn’t that his choice? Does he owe anyone any open display of his beliefs? How many ”Muslims“ do you know that you can tell they are a Muslim by their lifestyle? Does anyone really know by what you observe outwardly? Would that outward appearance allow you to know for certain and swear that person is or is not a ”Muslim“? Can you ”see and know“ that persons practice of their Deen from observing their outward appearance? I suggest that no one can factually! Again, Allahu Alim!!! Which brings me to the issue that I have had with the state of our collective practice of this Deen. Having been involved in this business of representing, managing, promoting, and advising many of the worlds most recognized Superstar professional athletes, celebrities and entertainers, I am intimately engaged in the reality of ”hero worship“ and the effects that it has on the public. To a great extent, I created much of ”how it is done“ and originated the field over 35 years ago including the founding of Nike’s ”Pro Club“ which was the first group of professional athletes signed to exclusive contracts to endorse the brand. This was the precursor and beginnings of the Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James branding divisions of today. But I digress. It never ceases to amaze and perturb me whenever I encounter someone that wants to find ”something“ to ”look up to/worship“ in a ”celebrity personality“ being ”Muslim“ just because they are a recognized celebrity. They approach this phenomena as if it somehow is going to make them ”better“ in someway. We have witnessed the fervor that took hold of the Muslim communities when it was rumored that Denzel Washington had reverted/converted to Islam while prepping for ”Malcolm X“ and the same for Will Smith with ”Ali“, Princess Di in her relationship with Dodi al-Fayed, Samuel L. Jackson, O. J. Simpson, Mike Tyson, Ice Cube and M.C. Hammer many times because of his relationship with me and supporting Islamic events, and on and on. I know some Shaykhs and Imams that have performed the alleged shahadah’s and I could not state with any certainty that the celebrity was ”Muslim“. What is this fascination with and what do we get out of these ”celebrities“ being Muslim, even if they are/were? Is it the potential advantages for dawah that might be extracted from it’s proper use in marketing that fact? Does it somehow give you more ”pride“ in being ”Muslim“ because the ”celebrity is “Muslim”? Does it make you and/or the Deen of al-Islam more acceptable to some segment of society that you want to appease and be accepted by? Does this “celebrity” somehow make you a “better Muslim” in some way? Does this celebrity make your prayer, and/or service of sacrifice for Allah(swt) possible, easier or fulfilled in some way? Are you going to receive some additional blessings because they might be “Muslim”? Do you gain any blessings because they are a “good” Muslim and/or do you also share/suffer the punishment if they are not “good” Muslims? You see, ALL this is useless when it comes to you and Allah(swt) just as it is useless to them when it comes to them and Allah(swt). If at some point Michael’s family chooses to state that he was Muslim, and it has been rumored for years while there are other members of his family that openly proclaim they are, how can it help anyone then? There are many “celebrity Muslims” that are alive and well here today that I don’t see how that fact is going to get anyone into Jannah. This brings me to the point. IT’S NOT!!! It will, at best, only have a microscopic marginal effect on your existence and only Allah(swt) will know that. But if it makes someone feel good about being “Muslim” then that is a positive that we all will take. But there is something patently wrong with the “hero worship” associated with celebrities in any form, of any stature, and this is from someone that helped create the business. There is a slogan from President Barack Obama’s campaign that when modified is so apropos for this concern. “You are the Muslim You that have been Waiting For ALL THIS TIME!!!” What one needs, this will not come from anyone else, not your Shaykhs, Imams, nor parents! We need to stop looking for something in someone, something, anyone, anything else, that we can and must ALL inevitably find in ourselves thru Allah(swt), Quran, the Sunnah of prophet Mohammad(saas), Hadith and our practice of this Deen of al-Islam. I pray Allah(swt) that I have answered those questions asked of me, insha’Allah. Here’s a link to a newscast regarding Michael’s reversion/conversion:

Muslims Doing Great Dawah In SF/Oakland Bay Area

The Free Food give-aways with KPFA Radio Station in Berkeley has been INCREDIBLE SUCCESSES masha’Allah. You can listen to or download the broadcast of the PSA’s for the Free Food Donations by clicking the links below. Everyone came from miles around was treated with as much food and flowers as they could pack, including the staff at Pacifica Radio Corporate and KPFA al’hamdu’lillah. They now want to do this donation on a weekly basis after the overwhelming back-to-back-to back successes of the previous public food give-aways that had people calling and coming from as far away as Santa Barbara and north/east to Oregon and Nevada. There are no words to express the sincere gratitude and “Thanks” conveyed on the part of the public and the employees and staff at Pacifica Radio and KPFA. JOB WELL DONE!!! These events was sponsored by Masjid al-Islam, Masjidul Waritheen, Oakland Islamic Center, Masjid Tasbeeh, The Muslim Community Center of San Francisco, Jama’atus Salaam, Go Wireless, Emad’s Tune Up, and The Justice For Ali Campaign- all of Oakland. These type of promotions are impossible without their involvement in these efforts, insha’Allah. This is incredible Dawah! Jazzak Allah Khair Khayrun. The “Thank You’s” to the Masajids and Muslims businesses for their invaluable support in providing all the food and floral arrangements with 100’s of bouquets of flowers and more for the “Nadra Foster Benefit” at La Pena Restaurant in Berkeley was aired live on the “Full Circle Show” with Host Joy Moore on Friday, June 19, 2009 at 7:00 PM. Jazzak Allah Khair Khayrun. Oddly enough, while the broadcast was being aired, unbeknownst to the crew, Khalil Yasin was there providing food and refreshments for them for their enjoyment after the show. They still have not stop thanking him and the above mentioned parties. You can listen to or download the broadcast of the “Thank You’s” mentioned above by clicking on the links below. Be sure and spread the word to support and acknowledge the Dawah these masajids and businesses are doing for our communities and Islam. On several occassions I have pointed out to many people at Pacifica/KPFA, a young man standing next to Snoop Dogg in a framed picture proudly displayed on the main wall outside their main conference room, from a rally to save Tookie Williams from execution held in November 2005. That young man is Imam Abu Qadir al-Amin. They were even more humbled when they acknowledged that he and the Muslim Community Center were one of the sponsors for this event. You can listen to or download the broadcasts of the PSA’s, the promos and “Thank You’s” for the Free Food Donations aired on the list of Pacifica stations, with over 100 affiliate stations worldwide, by clicking on the links below or on our blog at: http://superstarmanagement.wordpress.com/audio-and-new-submissions/ 6-24-09 KPFA Jazz Passages “Thank You’s” To Masjid Tasbeeh, Masjid Jama’atus Salaam, and the San Francisco Muslim Community Center, Go Wireless Mobile, Justice For Ali Campaign and Emad’s Tune Up http://www.box.net/shared/931o3glvvf KPFA Full Circle “Thank You’s” To Masjid al-Islam, Masjidul Waritheen, and the Oakland Islamic Center, Go Wireless Mobile and Emad’s Tune Up http://www.box.net/shared/oir0nffn6a Justice For Ali- KPFA Broadcast 5-2-09 http://www.box.net/shared/vtaovgeylt Justice For Ali- KPFA Broadcast 6-13-09 http://www.box.net/shared/cqqbke0tco Masjid al-Islam Fundraiser- KPFA Broadcast 5-16-09 http://www.box.net/shared/z9aekhpb1p Masjid al-Islam Fundraiser- KPFA Broadcast 5-9-09 http://www.box.net/shared/3emuadga83 Masjid al-Islam, Masjidul Waritheen, Oakland Islamic Center “Thank You’s ”- KPFA Broadcast 6-6-09 http://www.box.net/shared/64rm8fjhx1 Masjid al-Islam, Masjidul Waritheen, Oakland Islamic Center “Free Food Give Away Donation” – KPFA Broadcast 5-30-09 http://www.box.net/shared/r7f9nke7gt DaveyD has a new video up on this page for Imam Jamil with Martin Luther King Jr. Peace, Abdul-Jalil (510) 638-0808

Yohanes berkata: “Guru, kami lihat seorang mengusir setan demi nama-Mu, lalu kami cegah orang

Menjadi dekat tanpa berkompromi
Menemukan dukungan dari komunitas yang peduli
Menangani masalah dosa masa lalu
Mengambil keputusan benar tentang masa depanmu

Tuhan berkati..

I found an interesting offer for Christmas Gifts for her. a premier internet book gift website, book-gifts.com is offering 30-40% discounts and FREE festive packaging. Here is their announcement.

Their CMO Sonia Talreja struck a cord when she said that “Customers spend almost as much time, energy and money in buying gift wraps for wrapping their Christmas gifts, as on the Gift itself, so we felt that offering free festive packaging along with 30-40% discounts will be a real benefit to our customer. The economy is on every one’s mind, so we wanted to make it is easier and affordable for people to give quality holiday gifts”

I would recommend the book “Artificial Imagination”

it has a colorful cover and a moving story.

Well I have made 2 batches of homemade ice cream. And for some reason it’s so much better than store bought. I have never worked out the price to make it, as we have milk and eggs here. We save up ice to make it.

A trip to town yesterday was an eye opener. Gas here was down to $2.78 a gallon. I’m trying to restock some of the sugar I’ve used. (so as my stock does not get to low going into the winter). And do you know the 5 pounds bags are gone with the wind. All I could find where 4 pound bags for the same price as the 5 pound. I was not a happy camper. Some lady in the store said, “They changed to 4 pounds two months ago. Why are you so mad, now?” And as nicely as I could told her about my stocking and that I was just refilling my stock. And then I got the funny look from her, and she asked why I was stocking up? I just rolled my eyes, sorry to say, and went on. Potatoes, these are now gold in this area. Early this year, 10 lbs. $1.49, 50 lbs.$7.00, now 10 lbs are $4.99 and the 50 lbs. jump to $18.99. I bought one 10 lbs bag, why not the 50 lbs? Well we wanted some french fries(it’s been a month and half since we have had any), and the frozen french fries were even higher. I have some canned potatoes and instant mashed potatoes . We use to eat potatoes about every night, now maybe 2-3 times a week. Which is killing my 11 year old daughter.

I am now only buying staples at the store. I was buying a off brand hamburger helper ( for a fast meal) but the last two boxes I bought had a flavor of nothing but salt. So no more prepackaged foods. If I can not make it from scratch, we don’t eat it. I have put my foot down on cereal too( the only prepackaged food I buy as I have not learned to make it), as the price is the same but the ounces keep going down. I’ll buy one box a week that is not more than $2.00. Which has my 11 yrs. old checking prices and ounces better than before. Yesterday at Save A Lot, she was almost in tears. She said, “Mom, my cereal is now $1.89 a box and two weeks ago it was $1. 69 and 2 ounces larger.” She knows I will not buy it when it goes over $2.00. I think this mess is hurting the children hard. Yes, I know there are other foods for breakfast but we also use cereal as snacks( because we have so much milk).

I need to keep an eye out for milk prices as our milk cow is slowly drying up. (We are praying the bull in the pen with her, has done his job.) We are now getting about 2 gallons and a quart a day. I am still freezing and canning.

But we are using/drinking a gallon a day. So I’m not sure now long my stock will last.

Collodial Silver Water – Natural Antibiotic

I first tried this, a few weeks ago. And I love it. I had a super bad ear infection, which meant I needed an super antibiotic( I used pill antibiotics for 20 days). I could not hear out of my ear for almost 3 weeks. A friend said to try this Collodial silver water. And I did, with in 3 days, I could hear again. Then I goggled it and found more uses. Here is one: Usages. And another friend has the machine to make it at home and is going to make me some( thank you Angela). The last few days, I have been checking out herbs and their usages. Finding out which I can grow at home, which grow in the woods and fields around me. Please check into this.

My son got me an “Natural Remedies Encyclopedia” with 908 pages. He had gotten it earlier this year so that I could find things that might help Tommy with his cancer. I know this is an other must have book.

Here at Amazon

This book is not cheap, runs from $50.00 and up. (Maybe you can ask your son too, as we could not have bought it our selves). If you are like me and know very little about herbs, it’s great. And if you already know about using herbs, it has everything in one book. This book tells you everything, from photos of the herbs to making them, and what herbs to use for what. My son blessed us in more than one way with this book. This book covers a lot of every day things too. And think of all the money you will be saving, no more waiting in the doctors office for two hours. You say your not a doctor and will not know what your treating. Well the book also list symptoms, causes, natural remedies and is written by MD’s. I am not saying never go to the doctors, just not as much. With money tight you want to do all you can to save it. Some of the herbs are growing in your back yard for free. You moms with kids, I know you get tired of going in for ear infections, the Collodial silver water works and the book will give you more herbs and ways.

There are a very few books I put on my must have list. But the ones that are on this list are the best out there. And most cover everything in a subject. I have a most have gardening book, I’ll tell you about next time.

The more thing I can make/ or do at home, the less money I’ll have to spend. Everything I am doing takes more time than money. Time I have, money very little of. A few years ago, I would of never dream of using herbs, as I only knew a very few people who used them, so I did not know much about them myself. I had nothing against them or using them. I guess you could say I didn’t need them. Then Tommy got sick and this opened my eyes to herbs. I don’t know a lot about them YET, but I’m learning daily. And I’m thankful the Lord supply’s all our needs, even in the back yard.

Happy herb hunting,

The Encyclopedia of Country Living , An Old Fashioned Recipe Book

By: Carla Emery

This is a great book. And a must have for everyone. Even if you don’t live on a farm, or you don’t want to grow your own food, you want nothing to with animals. This book has everything in it. In hard times, this book will tell you how to do everything and in good times, it’ll make your life easier. I usually do not talk highly of books. But please try and get this book, ask for it as a gift, or save your change, give it as a gift. It will be the very best investment you can make. The book price runs $20 -$30, see if you can go in half’s with a friend to start with. I know this is a lot on money right now, but I know you will not be sorry. If I could only have one book, this would be it. The book photo shows the edition I have, but there is a newer one( I’m saving my change to get it).

To get a look at the inside of the book click this link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/1570615535/ref=sib_dp_pop_fc?ie=UTF8&p=S001#reader-link

Water Storage

I know I gave you a few links but I want to do a little more as this is a very needed thing. Before we got our storage water tank, these are ways/ were I stored water. They say to store 3 -7 days water. But I took it a little farther, 1 month. You say that’s a lot of water, not really if you reuse it.

Ways/were/reuse

fill 2 liter bottles and stick in closets, under beds, in the freezer( if you lose power, they can be put in coolers to keep things cold, then as they melt you have drinking water)

5 gallon buckets with lids ( the old paint buckets, use this water to flush the toilets, only) some of these can be left outside to freeze as long as they are not filled to the rim. I did store some in the outside sheds and barns. When a bucket became empty, I filled it with water. If I really needed the bucket for something else, just dump out the water and dry.

Water needs to be stored were no sun light can get to the water. our water tank is almost clear and sits outside on it’s own little deck. At the thrift store, I bought old blankets and covered the tank. And it worked great. No green water for two years now. The blankets also help to keep the water from freezing in the winter. On top of the blankets (in winter time) I place a dark colored trap, which helps to keep the water from freezing. On the neck part, where the water comes out, I wrap it in old wool sweaters. And it worked to keep it from freezing.

Save the water you use to rinse the dishes and wash hands in, and put it in a 5 gal. bucket in the bath room, to use to flush the toilet.

Plastic trash cans (unused, new) with lids, to store water in, if they have to be left out side, do not fill full. Used cans can be filled for flushing toilet.

If you know ahead of time that a storm is coming: fill your washing machine , bathtub, any large pot and pans you might have, coolers, up. Then use this water first, before using your stored water. I have two of those 5 gallon drinking coolers on my front porch, year round, and change the water once a month. They have never froze, but we usually don’t get colder than about 0.

For those of you who do canning, take your extra jars and can some water. I have some 1/2 gallon jars, that you are really not to can food in (nothing but apple juice), I use these to can water. This water can be used to clean wounds, to drink, etc.

Milk jugs really are not strong enough to store water in. And they leak so easily. Reuse plastic juice bottles, 2 liter bottles, 16 oz. soda/water bottles.

The big tub plastic tots with lids are good to store water in. Throw a sheet over them and you have a little table.

Use the water in your hot water heater. I’m not sure I’d drink it, but can be used for washing and toilets.

If your stored water turns green, use it to flush the toilet.

I went one time with very little water stored, for three days. I was not a happy camper. It just takes one time for me. You might think I store to much water, well we’ll see. This is the most important thing I store, and I’ll not be caught short handed again. And I really do not want any of you to come up short here. It’s not a pretty sight.

With a hard winter coming it’s best to store some water. Why? What if you can’t pay your power bill on time and it takes you a few days to get the money up? What if a big storm comes? What if your well goes dry/pump breaks? What if the city water lines break or go down or run out of water? The what if’s are endless. Please store some water. It does not cost to store water. Just look around your home for things to use. Everyone is storing food and other things getting ready for winter and the hard times ahead. How is your water storage? How many days can you go?

Until next time,
