Siapa yang Tidak kenal The Ting Tings. Band yang hanya beranggota 2 orang, Katie White dan Jules De Martino ini sedang naik daun. Band yang terkenal dengan lagu-lagu seperti Great DJ dan That’s not My Name ini akhirnya menyempatkan diri untuk datang kejakarta. Melalui Promotor Java ini, The Tingtings Sukses dalam konsernya di jakarta.

Mereka ikut berpartisipasi dalam SOULNATION dan bertindak sebagai special performance. Saya juga ikut menonton. awalnya saya tidak begitu suka The Ting tings karena saya lebbih menyukai musik keras atau metal. tetapi saat mereka perform, waduh !! gila banget! keren ! Jules yang memulai dengan bermain piano, kemudian bermain Gitar + Bass Drum. itu keren banget.

Katie White juga wanita cantik, dengan banyak talent. dia bisa bermain gitar sambil bernyanyi dan dance! wow! saya sangat ga rugi nonton The Ting Tings. tapi saya males banget nonton band2 lain di SOULNATION ny! =p. no hard feeling, emang jelek2 aja kecuali slank. =p

So, I’ve been pretty chillaxed these past few days. My body’s well rested, but I think my brain is just taking an extended holiday from the craziness of last week. There’s not much due this week and I feel pretty productive, but I skipped DJ class tonight in the hopes of getting some work done… You can tell from this blog post that that has yet to begin. Speaking of DJ class, though, I went on Monday and, far out, beat mixing is HARD. Like, ridiculously so.

Beat mixing works like this: you have two records on your turntables which are playing different songs. These songs might not necessarily have the same beats-per-minute, which means one song is slower or faster than the other (think, say, Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” and Zero 7’s “Destiny”). Obviously, when you’re playing two songs that don’t have the same bpm, it’s going to sound ridiculously out of time when you play them together. So beat mixing is slowing down (or speeding up) one of the songs so that the bpms match up and you can play them together without sounding like your setup is suffering arrythmia.

The trick to beat mixing is catching which track has a faster (or slower) bpm in the first five or so seconds. Any longer than that and the faster one catches up to the slower one and it becomes the equivalent of a faster runner lapping the straggler at the end. It’s actually a lot easier to adjust bpms when it’s all out of time, but if you’re a DJ playing a set, it would be preferable to sort it out before the listeners catch on and think you’re a really bad DJ.

Picking the faster (or slower) track in the first five seconds is what’s hard for me. I have trouble keeping in mind which bass beat belongs to which song, and by the time the lub-dub of the ridiculously out of time tracks start, I have no idea what track I was focusing on in the first place. I cheated and just let them play out of time for ages before fiddling with the pitch control. The program we learned with has bpm counters (as do all other programs, I think) but if the songs aren’t already beatmapped — can’t cheat!

And this is the end of what turned into a post all about my experience at Monday’s DJ class. I hope you were entertained or at least polite enough to read until the end.

I think we can skip all necessary preamble when it comes to me and new blogs. What can I say? I got bored with Tumblr and returned to WordPress like it’s Matt Albie and I’m Harriet Hayes (yes, I’ve been watching Studio 60). As always, I’ll never have anything particularly enlightening to say (also continually bemoaning the fact that I’ll never get a good grasp on what my writing style actually is, and how Pharmacy doesn’t help in the slightest), but you can always rest assured that I’ll have paragraphs of pointless prose (take that alliteration) to read in the event of procrastination (scour, don’t skim).

I’ve recently started a beginner’s DJ course with the Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand. I’ve always wanted to do a DJ course, so obviously I should start one smack bang in the middle of the toughest semester of my degree thus far. Bright side: it’s only four weeks long. Anyway, I met this girl (as these stories are wont to begin), and we started talking about music with one of the three other guys.

“What kind of music do you like?” says the girl to the boy (man).

“Dunno,” replies the guy. He’s making a decent effort to think about it. “Just… all sorts, I guess. I like all music.”

“Really,” says the girl, in a tone that conveys twelve kinds of disbelief. “Every one who says that has at least — at least – one genre that they don’t really like.” She pronounces “genre” like “zshon-ree” and it’s all I can think about for the remainder of the conversation.

I try (foolishly) to add to the conversation. “Yeah, like I don’t normally like gangster rap.”

The girl’s still slicing away at the guy’s musical taste. “There’s always a genre.” Gen-ree. “Every time someone says that to me, I can always name at least one genre–” genre — “that they don’t like listening to.”

She sounds like she’s fricken preaching. “So what do you–”

“I like all gen-rees,” she says, and I can hardly believe my ears. “Everything.”

It’s very handy that the most ridiculous musical genres I have ever heard of choose this moment to flee my mind completely. Wizard rock? Out the window. Experimental indie krautrock? Goodbye. Gospel metalcore? Nup. I guess “gen-rees” was still taking over brainspace.

It was also at that point that I lost all consideration of having any respect for her. It sounds a bit harsh, but that’s me, and I’m not exactly sure what I was (and still am) so irked about. I was honestly expecting her to give an example of a genre that she didn’t particularly like listening to. Oh, the naïveté of me. Did she not realise the irony of her statement? It was like me saying that every single person in the world had a pet peeve. Every. Single. Person. And then proceed to proclaim that I had absolutely no pet peeves at all.

(Calm yourselves.)

Then again, I always believe that an opinion can never be wrong (it is an opinion, after all). So I will behave myself. She’s entitled to her opinions (however wrong they might be). DJ class is very fun, though.

I shouldn’t like The Ting Tings.    I really shouldn’t.

But I do.

They are a bizarro White Stripes.   One guy and one girl… rocking.   But instead of the guy on guitar and the girl in drums, it is reversed.

The insanely catchy “Great DJ” was my introduction to The Ting Tings.   Starts with a Jangly guitar riff and then the drums kick in.   Nonsensical lyrics and a chorus that sticks in your brain like a wad of delicious bubble gum.

“Shut Up and Let Me Go” starts with drums and then kicks in with a tremendous guitar riff.   Katie White’s singing puts this song over the edge for me.    Just a great slice of goodness.

El Bilbao BBK Live es un festival que se celebra desde 2006 en Bilbao.

The Ting Tings (Banda de rock pop con un elevado toque electrónico y yo diría futurista, en cuanto a sonido, formada por Jules de Martino y Katie White en 2006. Su primer y único disco We Started Nothing publicado en 2008, merece ser escuchado. Canciones como That’s no my name os sonarán mucho y otras como Great DJ os engatusarán tanto como lo hicieron amí. Muy recomendables).
Vetusta Morla (Pocos no conocen ya a esta banda de indie originaria de Tres Cantos, Madrid que canta en castellano -¡Aleluya!-. Esta banda nacida en 1998 ha tenido que esperar a 2008 para publicar su primer disco largo tras muchas demos y algún que otro LP.  Su primer “largo” Un día en el mundo nos deja imaginar un renacimiento de la movida musical madrileña que puede estar fraguándose bajo los nombres de bandas como esta. Destacando canciones como Copenhague que nos dejan con letras muy conseguidas.)

Chequeando un dia la MTV vi estos videos y me gustó mucho la chica… y también los dos temas. Katie White se llama ella y el grupo (dúo, de hecho; el otro miembro es el bateria Jules de Martino), The Ting Tings. Son un pequeño fénomeno indie-dance británico, de entrada fácil y tirar al poco rato. En poco  más de un año consiguieron el apoyo del New Musical Express (NME) y fueron un boom en MySpace, y de ahí a grabar disco para una multi, We Started Nothing (2008). Un divertimento entretenido.

A pesar de parecer un hype de estudio, resulta que también tocan en vivo. Triunfaron en el Glastonbury 2007 y estaran en el BBK Live el próximo julio. Keep your head es otro estupendo tema de su debut, aquí en video en video en directo… y a pesar de contar con algunas bases pregrabadas no suena mal

אחח, חשופית. כבר הרבה זמן שתעשיית הטלנובלות בארץ מושכת לקצה העליון של סקאלת האיכות; אמנם במסגרת של סוגה שמקסימום האיכות בה לא מנסח ספרי הסטוריה, אבל היא מקפידה להפגין מודעות עצמית גבוהה בלי לשכוח חיבור אמתי להלך החיים הישראלי, המודרני (הרבה מהטלנובלות הספרדיות נראות אנאכרוניסטיות, עם משיכה בעיקר לסוף השמונימז ותחילת התשעימז [לטעמי]). כיום, “חלולים” מתקרבת כמעט עד ל”בטי” האמריקאית מבחינת הומור עצמי, תפיסות מודרניות ופלורליסטיות לגבי יחסים, כמו גם מבחינת שימוש בפסיכולוגיה עדכנית בשנקל (אולי אפילו בשני שנקל).
אז כן – קטעי הטקסט הם עדיין ברמה של טלנובלה; ובמיוחד – הרבה ממקדמי העלילה… כמו, למשל, כשאלקנא (שכבר נשוי או מאורס או מובטח או מיועד לאיזו אחרת) מתרברב בפני חבריו המתנחלים ביתרון החופש שבחיים מעט חילוניים יותר, ותו”כ מתחתן עם הילי ילון (יהה שם דמותה אשר יהיה). קשה שלא לחשוב שהצרה ה”מפתיעה” הזו הייתה נמנעת בקלות בעולם האמיתי… זה הלך בערך ככה:

ועדיין – כיף לראות, אשכרה יוצרת ציפיה לפרק הבא, וכיף לראות שאנשים טובים מקבלים שם הזדמנויות של ממש (עוד שיעור טוב ש”בטי” מלמדת) – אותה הילי ילון (אותה הכרתי רק מ”סוף שבוע בתל אביב“, אז היא “חדשה” מבחינתי), יורם בינור שנותן בראש, עמנואל הלפרין (אני לא ידעתי שהוא גם שחקן, אבל מתברר ש), ליטל רוזנצוויג וצופית גרנט (שכבר מזמן מגיעה להן במה אוהדת), מרינה מ.ב. וטלי אורן שעוד לא התחילו להראות לנו כמה הרבה הן באמת יכולות ואפילו דנה ספקטור, שיוצאת שם הכי מוצלחת בעולם.

סוף כל סוף! יש להוט פרסומת (פרומו) שאפשר להגיד עליה “מוצלחת”! מי היה מאמין? הייתי בטוח שלנצח הם ייסתכלו על הפרסומות ביס ולא יבינו “למה אנשים אומרים ש’ביס מקבלים יותר תמורה עבור הכסף’?”. הכוונה היא לפרסומת ללוח השידורים העתידי של הוט 3 (ברור שאם תהיה פרסומת טובה בהוט, היא תהיה לערוץ הזה), הפרסומת עם הנהיגה. המוזיקה לא מלהיבה עד-כדי-כך (בטח שלא ממכרת כמו אלו של YES או כמו Great DJ), אבל על הרעיון והביצוע – שאפו.

עם כל הבעת האמון הנ”ל, התייחסתי לדברים ספציפיים; בתחום התוכן המקורי, באופן כללי ובסוגת המתח בפרט, יש עוד הרבה לאן ללכת (ע”ע “תמרות עשן” הטפשית, שהדבר הכי טוב שיצא ממנה היה נעימת הפתיחה)…

The Ting Tings es una banda de rock pop inglesa, con dos miembros: Jules de Martino (batería y coros) y Katie White (vocales, guitarra y contrabajo). La banda comenzó en 2006 en Islington Mill, Salford.

Cuando Katie White era adolescente, estuvo en un grupo de chicas, TKO (Total Knock Out). El grupo lo formaban Katie y dos amigas. TKO eran teloneras de grupos como Steps y Five pero nunca llegaron a firmar un acuerdo discográfico ni a publicar un disco.

Jules de Martino también comenzó en un grupo de adolescentes llamado Babakoto, y publicaron un sencillo llamado “Just to Get By” en 1987. Después de que Babakoto rompiera, De Martino fue el cantante de un grupo de rock independiente “Mojo Pin”, que publicó dos sencillos: “You” en 1995 y “My Imagination” en 1996.

De Martino conoció a White cuando ella estaba con las TKO justo antes de su ruptura. Unos meses después, la pareja tropezó un día y formaron un trío Dear Eskiimo, que estaban con Mercury Records pero diferencias creativas y el estilo de gestión de la discográfica les llevó a la ruptura.

Esta experiencia inicial hizo que White y De Martino desconfiaran de la industria de la música, y entonces crearon los Ting Tings. El grupo comenzó a tocar en fiestas privadas en The Mill, Salford (un edificio que alberga a artistas y a las aventuras creativas emergentes relacionadas con las bellas artes hasta el teatro y el cine); las entradas para estas fiestas llegaron a ser muy populares en las fiestas en Manchester, con invitados de lujo como representantes y productores de discos que buscaban las entradas, comoRick Rubin, que trabajaba para los Red Hot Chili Peppers y Johnny Cash.

BUT the night started out disastrously, as Pho Vietnam was “sold out! sold out!” of bahn mi, however that happens. The yo!berry with pineapple made up for it, though.

Lucky for us, one of our go2 writers works for Live Nation and got us into the reserved section at the Paradise so we got a good view without having to a) show up early (since the bahn mi crisis threw me into a frenzy of indecision), b) be squished. He also bought us all beer, which was very nice of him.

I was impressed by the sheer amount of instruments that were played by the two members of the band. They had no other musicians on stage. Jules played guitar while simultaneously playing high-hat and bass drum with his feet. I don’t think I would be able to coordinate each of my feet to tap out different rhythms, nevermind play a guitar at the same time. Katie rocked out on guitar and the keyboard. They also had an extra bass drum in the back that she went to town on somewhere during the encore. And there was a cow bell. If anyone wants me to play cow bell in their band, that would be super.

Katie knocked a lot of shit over. It made me realize that I want a job where I can kick stuff over and someone will run over at my convenience and fix it for me. Also, a job where people clap at the end would be pretty cool.

Additionally, she had some rad sparkly silver tights.

Chances are, you have probably heard some of the British duo The Ting Tings and never even realized it.  Whether it was the appearance of their first single “Great DJ” in the trailer for the now Best Picture “Slumdog Millionaire” or their infectiously groovy “Shut Up and Let Me Go” in an April 2008 iPod commercial (now a staple launch point for emerging artists), The Ting Tings have slowly infiltrated the United States pop scene. Composed of Julian de Martino and Katie White, The Ting Tings got their start when the pair met each other in Manchester, England and formed a trio called Dear Eskimo. After “creative differences” with their record label at the time, White and Martino were left scratching their heads and wondering how they would get back into the music game.

So, like any struggling band, they began to throw massive house parties. These mini-gigs started off as a way to have a laugh with friends while testing out new material.  But they soon became legendary around England, drawing large crowds and interest in their unique music.

In 2007, The Ting Tings started to branch out past their living room, finding their way onto the Glastonbury stage and on the often career-making talk show “Later with Jools Holland.”  May 2008 saw the release of their debut album “We Started Nothing,” and shortly after, their single “That’s Not My Name” reach #1 on the UK Singles chart.

“We Started Nothing” is a modern-day dance music gem. White’s sexy, straight-forward vocals (think Lily Allen with a splash of Debbie Harry) and simple guitar riffs combined with Martino’s bass background vocals and drums leave the listener tapping their foot and nodding their head.  Add in playful, catchy lyrics and set it to electric synthesizers and you have the perfect cocktail of funk, punk and sugary sweet pop.

The best songs on “We Started Nothing” include the hysterical “That’s Not My Name,” about White’s frustration with being labeled just another pretty, blond pop star. “Shut Up and Let Me Go” pits White against a former lover who has undoubtedly kissed her lips for the last time, while “Fruit Machine” berates a boy (or perhaps an old record company) for shelling out money instead of love.

After The Ting Tings wrap up their first United States tour in May 2009, they will be making their first appearance at Bonnaroo.  I hope Tennessee has their dancing shoes on! (Photo courtesy of remake_remodel on Flickr)
