1972 Airstream Camper - Car Hauler Conversion

Big things are happening this year at Harper Auto Square. We just recently purchased a 27′ Airstream Camper that we are converting to be a car hauler/event trailer. When finished the trailer will be a party on wheels! Jim and Mike Barillaro of Barillaro Speed Emporium took on this project to make the first car hauling Airstream. They have done amazing custom work to make this idea come a reality. The following are photos of the progress we have up to this point.

This is the camper on the way back from picking it up in Cleveland!

Cameron and Jamie loved taking a sledgehammer to the interior of the camper.

The gutted Airstream is now ready for a new stronger structure to accommodate a car in the back of it.

With the new floor in place, we now put in the ramps to help the car get over the fender wells.

2 custom made hinges were attached to help the back open up like your typical refrigerator.

The door now swings open and will be equipped with a big screen TV and audio equipment to bring the party!

The FIAT Abarth fits in the back of the trailer like a glove

The interior is getting skinned with the same aluminum sheeting as the outside of the Airstream

Chad Lange came and installed the hardwood floors. He is also in the process of making the benches for the front of the Airstream.

Label Industries gave us this mock up of what the exterior of the Airstream will look like after it is wrapped.

The Airstream will be completed by Friday February 22, 2013 in time for the Harper Show & Sell event. Come on out and see what kind of party the trailer can bring!

We have all the kinks worked out and we are open! We now have 3,000 more sq ft of capacity to take care of all your needs. More customer lounge space, more space in our business center, more showroom space to display one of every model, more entertainment, and still the same great service. There is over 400″ of TV screens to make sure you are never bored.

To all of you Auto Show fans out there, Harper V-Dub will be there. We’re going to have a huge 7 car display and I promise not to disappoint. We have lots to be proud of for 2012 with all of the new models rolling out of Germany and in our backyard down in Chattanooga. The new TN built Passat has already been a screaming hit and we have sold almost every car we’ve had in immediately. The East TN buying public has truly embraced this vehicle.

Below is a little synopsis of what we will be showcasing this year at the Knoxville Auto Show (January 27-29, 2012). The Auto Show will be piggybacked along with our Whiteframe Grand Opening in January.

HOT NEW VOLKSWAGENS

JETTA: Gets a GLI high-performance version for 2012 with a starting price of $23,495, excluding shipping. The GLI is powered by a 2-liter turborcharged gas engine with 200 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, with a dual clutch automatic optional.

GOLF: Golf R version arrives early next year with a high-output version of the 2-liter turbocharged four, with more than 250 horsepower.

NEW BEETLE: The company’s iconic Beetle gets a squat, sloped design for 2012 with 2.5-liter five-cylinder and 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The 170-horsepower in-line five-cylinder engine gets 22 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway. Prices start at $18,995 excluding shipping.

PASSAT: The midsize Passat is all-new with a significantly lower price than its predecessor at $19,995, excluding shipping. The base model has a 170-horsepower 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine. It also comes with a 2-liter TDI diesel, a turbocharged 140-horsepower 2-liter four-cylinder engine and a 3.6-liter V-6 with 280 horsepower.

TIGUAN: The small crossover SUV gets an update with a sleeker look, and a redesigned grille and redesigned taillights. The transmission was also tweaked to improve fuel economy.

HARPER VOLKSWAGEN IN THE NEWS

We just had a great article written about our latest expansion product and how the new Passat really ties into the local economy. Chattanooga isn’t the only place benefiting from the new plant! Our proximity to the plant will bring automotive suppliers to the area (similar to Denso) as well as peripheral jobs. We are so excited about the new Passat and the response from the local press has been fantastic. Knoxvillians are obviously very excited about VW making such a large commitment to East Tennessee and I know the car will sell well due in part to the “buy local” factor. We should be receiving them so soon!
