But here in Greece, the weather forecast always cheers us up. Even if the weather is awful. That is because of Petroula, Star TV’s weather forecaster.

The idea of the meeting is the three prime ministers to consider possibilities on co-operation in the field of defense and long progress of the region of the Lake Prespa. If the meeting take place it would be held just days after the start of the international conference in Copenhagen on climate changes and two months before the 10-th year anniversary since the then prime ministers of the three countries has worked out a common communiqué on their engagements to co-operate with the aim to save the ecosystem of the Lake Prespa, Eleftherоtypia writes.

Greek government has confirmed that despite the tripartite meeting between the ministers of Albania, the Republic of Macedonia and Greece Sali Berisha, Nikola Grievski and George Papandreou bilateral meeting between Grievski and Papandreou will be held,, Imerisia informed. High standing resource of Greek foreign ministry noted the bilateral meeting would not mean parallel talks on name dispute and that the procedure on finding a resolution remains in the UN. According to the same resource Greek Prime Minister would deliver his Macedonian counterpart the message the key for the European perspective of the Republic of Macedonia is the resolution of the name dispute at the basis of Greek “red line” (name with geographical definition for common use).

Greece continues looking openly at its relations with the Republic of Macedonia with an aim to find a solution of the name issue, Vima writes. Greek Prime Minister has taken the initiative to hold informal meeting with the prime ministers of the Republic of Macedonia and Albania on possibilities on co-operation in the field of defense and long progress of the region of the Lake Prespa.

Grievski and Papandreou will hold a bilateral meeting at which they would discuss issues of bilateral interest, probably the name dispute as well.

Dear Pythagoras,

The council has examined your new theorems. Firstly, let me reiterate that your past contributions to the world of philosophy and mathematics are greatly appreciated. Perhaps you ought to focus on your continued teaching of these past ideas, rather than obsessing with creating new theorems.

Specifically, you’re contribution – “when it comes to triangles of the right variety, b squared plus a squared is equal to c squared.” Surely you don’t think we would not notice this as a simple reorganization of your prior theorem. Ditto for “of the right triangle sort, it is always true that c squared be equal to the sums of a squared and b squared.” You had a great run, buddy, don’t push it.

The sixth Turkish-Italian Forum on Wednesday opened with questions about Turkey’s commitment to the EU in its foreign policy and the EU’s commitment to accept Turkey once it meets the required conditions.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu strongly emphasized that Turkey’s recent opening for its neighbors and countries in the region is not an alternative to EU membership. To the contrary, Turkish foreign policy is rooted in the European values of dialogue and peace.

Turkey has been speedily improving its relations with countries like Syria and Iran, as well as other countries in the Middle East and the Islamic world, raising questions about whether Turkey is drifting away from Europe.

“Turkey’s intense diplomatic efforts are not an alternative but are laying the groundwork for Turkish membership in the EU,” said Davutoğlu, speaking at the opening of the forum. Turkey’s membership should be perceived in the EU as a strategic objective, not an element of domestic politics and bargains, Davutoğlu added.

Emma Bonino, vice president of the Italian senate and a member of Independent Commission on Turkey, went further when she recalled that although Turkey might have indeed slowed down its pace of reforms since 2006, some EU states withdrew their once unanimous consensus regarding full Turkish membership. She also spoke favorably about Turkey’s recent policy toward the region, saying that “this new policy is not in contradiction but complimentary [to EU policy].”

Bonino also emphasized a need for more informed and less stereotype-based debate regarding Turkish society and participation in the EU. She focused particularly on the perception in Italy of women’s rights in Turkey; this is also one of the key fields of interest for the forum.

Bonino elaborated on a false positive perception of women’s position in Italian society – false because it is far from acceptable. She pointed out deep differences in women’s participation in the labor market and general visibility in the public sphere between northern and southern Italy. The southern part of the country lags behind the north in terms of women’s empowerment. Italian society also holds a number of stereotypes regarding women’s role in Turkey, but “we should start from real hard facts rather than stereotypes,” she said.

In the beginning of his also speech, Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini touched on the topic of women’s empowerment and equality. In his view, “substantial full equality between man and women” should be the measure of democracy. He also recalled instances of Turkey’s active involvement in promoting gender equality in different international forums.

Frattini spoke of the “silent revolution of reforms” that recently swept through Turkey. These reforms, while bringing Turkey closer to membership in the EU, also benefit Turkish society, which is most important. In his view, the EU should not think of Turkish accession in terms of enlargement but reunification.

Like Davutoğlu, he insisted on Turkey’s place in Europe despite religious or cultural differences. This difference in particular might be Turkey’s benefit to the EU as an asset in relation to Muslim minorities in member states as well as Muslim world in general. Christianity is compatible with Islam as much as Islam is compatible with democracy, he said.

Frattini confirmed the general consensus represented by the participants of the panel that the EU is obligated to accept Turkey’s accession since it has accepted Turkey’s candidacy. Moreover, the costs of “losing” Turkey would be too great and would have far-reaching consequences for the EU, which it can neither imagine nor afford.

Greece is disturbingly close to a debt compound spiral. It is the first developed country on either side of the Atlantic to push unfunded welfare largesse to the limits of market tolerance.

Euro membership blocks every plausible way out of the crisis, other than EU beggary. This is what happens when a facile political elite signs up to a currency union for reasons of prestige or to snatch windfall gains without understanding the terms of its Faustian contract.

When the European Central Bank’s Jean-Claude Trichet said last week that certain sinners on the edges of the eurozone were “very close to losing their credibility”, everybody knew he meant Greece.

The interest spread between 10-year Greek bonds and German bunds has jumped to 178 basis points. Greek debt has decoupled from Italian debt. Athens can no longer hide behind others in EMU’s soft South.

“As far as the bond vigilantes are concerned, the Bat-Signal is up for Greece,” said Francesco Garzarelli in a Goldman Sachs client note, Tremors at the EMU Periphery.

The newly-elected Hellenic Socialists (PASOK) of George Papandreou confess that the budget deficit will be more than 12pc of GDP this year, four times the original claim of the last lot. After campaigning on extra spending, it will have to do the exact opposite. “We need to save the country from bankruptcy,” he said.

Good luck. Communist-led shipyard workers have already clashed violently with police. Some 200 anarchists were arrested in Athens last week after they torched streets of cars in a tear gas battle.

Mr Papandreou has mooted a pay freeze for state workers earning more than €2,000 a month. This has already set off an internal party revolt. “There is enormous denial,” said Lars Christensen, emerging markets chief at Danske Bank. “They don’t seem to understand that very serious austerity measures are needed. It is a striking contrast with Ireland,” he said.

Brussels says Greece’s public debt will rise from 99pc of GDP in 2008 to 135pc by 2011, without drastic cuts. Athens has been shortening debt maturities to trim costs, storing up a roll-over crisis next year. Some €18bn comes due in the second quarter of 2010 (IMF).

Modern economies have reached such debt levels before, and survived, but never in the circumstances facing Greece. “They can’t devalue: they can’t print money,” said Mr Christensen.

The tourist trade is withering, down 20pc last season by revenue. Turkey was up. It is hard to pin down how much is a currency effect, but clearly Greece has priced itself out of the Club Med market. Wages rose a staggering 12pc in the 2008-2009 pay-round alone (IMF data), suicidal in a Teutonic currency union. Greece has slipped to 71st in the competitiveness index of the World Economic Forum, behind Egypt and Botswana.

Greece has long been skating on thin ice. The current account deficit hit 14.5pc of GDP in 2008. External debt has reached 144p (IMF). Eurozone creditors – German banks? – hold €200bn of Greek debt.

A warning from Bank of Greece that lenders must wean themselves off the ECB’s emergency funding has brought matters to a head. Default insurance on Greek debt jumped 40 basis points last week.

Greek banks have borrowed €40bn from the ECB at 1pc, playing the “yield curve” by purchasing state bonds. This EU subsidy has made up for losses on property, shipping, and Balkan woes.

The banks insist that they are in rude good health. EFG Eurobank has halved reliance on ECB funding. “Greek banks are very liquid: we maintain billions in extra liquidity,” it said. Yet markets are wary. Recession has come late to Greece, but will bite deep in 2010. It takes three years for defaults to peak once the cycle turns.

David Marsh, author of The Euro: The Politics of The New Global Currency, said the danger for EMU laggards is that the ECB will begin to tighten before they are out of trouble. It is German recovery that threatens to stretch the North-South divide towards breaking point.

Athens squandered its euro windfall. For a decade, EMU let Greece borrow at almost the same cost as Germany. It was a heaven-sent chance to whittle down debt. Instead, the country dug itself deeper into a hole by running budget deficits near 5pc of GDP at the top of the boom.

Like Labour under Brown, idiot leaders mistook a bubble for their own skill. But the consequences in EMU are more dreadful. Austerity may prove self-defeating, without the cure of devaluation. Greece risks grinding deeper into slump.

The EU can paper over this by transfering large sums of money to Greece. But will Berlin, Paris – and London, also on the hook – feel obliged to bail out a country that has so flagrantly violated the rules of the club, not least by holding Eastern Europe’s EU entry to ransom over Cyprus? That is neither forgotten, nor forgiven.

During the panic last February, German finance minister Peer Steinbruck promised to rescue any eurozone state in dire trouble. He is no longer in office. The pledge was, in any case, a bounced political cheque even when he wrote it. Greece can assume nothing.

€During Mitreva’s term Macedonia became EU candidate country

Macedonia’s Prime Minister has failed to present a platform for resolving the country’s burning row with Greece, leaving a space that is wide-open for speculation, the former Foreign Minister Ilinka Mitreva said in an interview for local media.

Macedonia urgently needs a national platform regarding this issue, she said. This negotiating platform should be agreed upon by all the political parties, but first Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski must openly explaining his position.

“I would like to hear Gruevski’s stand regarding this key issue for the country,” Mitreva told A1 TV. “He has to tell us whether he is ready for compromise or not, and what that compromise means,” she argued.

Mitreva briefly led the Foreign Ministry in 2001 and later took the same post between 2002 to 2006 when the Social Democrats, SDSM party, were in power. Macedonia became an EU candidate country while she was in office.

To date there has not been an open debate within the country on the name issue, with the public being kept largely in the dark on the content of negotiations between Skopje and Athens.

The European Commission last month gave Macedonia an added incentive to resolve the name dispute by recommending the EU gives Skopje a start date for accession negotiations into the bloc, but left the decision on the date to member states who meet on 7 December.

Greece has threatened to block Macedonia’s accession pending a solution to the name dispute. Media speculate the Commission will make a last ditch attempt to find a mechanism to resolve the dispute ahead of 7 December.

The European Commission hails the initiative for bilateral meeting between Greece and Macedonia on Friday. This is what European Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn said at opening of an exhibition of Macedonian cartoonist Delco Mihailov in Brussels, A1 reported. Rehn shown hope that the EU member states will pass the European Commission recommendation for starting talks for EU accession of Macedonia. In Rehn word’s it is a good courage for solving the name dispute with Greece.

Meteora (Greek: Μετέωρα, “suspended rocks”, “suspended in the air” or “in the heavens above”) is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece.

In the 9th century, an ascetic group of hermit monks moved up to the ancient pinnacles.
They were the first people to inhabit Metéora. They lived in hollows and fissures in the rock towers, some of which reach 1800 ft (550m) above the plain. This great height, combined with the sheerness of the cliff walls, kept away all but the most determined visitors. Initially the hermits led a life of solitude, meeting only on Sundays and special days to worship and pray in a chapel built at the foot of a rock known as Dhoupiani. As early as the 11th century AD hermit monks were believed to be living among the caves and cutouts in the rocks.

Access to the monasteries was originally (and deliberately) difficult, requiring either long ladders lashed together or large nets used to haul up both goods and people. This required quite a leap of faith – the ropes were replaced, so the story goes, only “when the Lord let them break”.[5] In the words of UNESCO, “The net in which intrepid pilgrims were hoisted up vertically alongside the 373 metres (1,220 ft) cliff where the Varlaam monastery dominates the valley symbolizes the fragility of a traditional way of life that is threatened with extinction.

The prime ministers of neighboring Macedonia and Greece, Nikola Gruevski and George Papandreou, will convene on Friday to talk about ways of resolving their 18 years long name row.

The two will convene at the sidelines of a trilateral climate change meeting between Albania, Macedonia and Greece which will take place on Greek territory near the Prespa Lake, a focal point where the three countries borders intersect, the A1 TV reports, citing unnamed sources.

After the trilateral, Papandreou and Gruevski will have a tête-à-tête to try to find a modality to overcome their differences on the name issue.

The meeting will take place some ten days before EU member states are due to meet on 7 December, where they are expected to decide whether to give a date for Macedonia’s accession talks with the bloc. Athens has threatened to block the giving of a date, pending a solution to the name dispute.

Media speculate that given the short period prior to the EU Council meeting, Gruevski and Papandreou can only focus on finding a mutually acceptable name, leaving discussions about its span of use and other details for later.

Last year Athens blocked Skopje’s NATO accession arguing that the country’s constitutional name, Republic of Macedonia implies territorial claims towards its own northern province which is also called Macedonia.

The European Commission last month gave Macedonia an added incentive to resolve the name dispute by recommending the EU gives Skopje a start date for accession negotiations into the bloc, but left the decision on the date to member states.

EU officials have repeatedly urged Macedonia to seize the moment, keeping in mind also that there has been a change of government in Greece with the election of Papandreou – who is seen as less hawkish regarding the name issue than his predecessor Kostas Karamanlis.

Gruevski and Papandreou recently had a short courtesy meeting in Brussels to break the diplomatic ice between the two countries that has lasted for almost four years.

Media have been citing unnamed Brussels diplomats as saying that Commission will make a last ditch attempt to find a mechanism to resolve the dispute ahead of 7 December.

They say that some version of the name Northern Macedonia may be on the table.
