I am so old that I remember when comic books were meant to be read and reread, to be consumed by kids of all ages.  They were not bought as an investment.  I still have many of my old comics and have decided to list them on eBay cheap.  Username “jdhughett”.  If you’re a boomer like me who grew up on comics you will find some treasures.  Not for the collectors or those who buy comics for investment but for comic book lovers, great reading copies of great comic books that you can enjoy like they were meant to be enjoyed

This week I only bought 1 new comic book, mainly due to a light week for me.

Green Lantern #44 (Blackest Night)

As a bonus, I decided to add a review of the Watchmen Director’s Cut.  I will post my text review of the theatrical release later.

Green Lantern = Lentera Hijau (a poetical hero? Lol.)

Well, cukup menarik menyimak berita minggu ini di Variety, tentang Ryan Reynolds, si pria beruntung yang nikah sama si cantik Scarlett Johansson, yang baru beberapa hari lalu saya tonton filmnya, Definetely, Maybe (bagus, lho) ternyata dia yang jadi Deadpool toh di X-Men: Origins. I didn’t notice him since the movie sucks! Well, yang menarik adalah dia katanya bersaing dengan Justin Timberlake untuk mendapatkan peran ini. Please, no Justin Timberlake. You better sing Sexy Back than play this green guy.

Nampaknya Warner Bros punya rencana besar untuk film yang satu ini karena gosipnya dananya bakal sampai 200 juta dolar. Gak main-main dong. Jadwal rilisnya pun summer. Kalau tahun lalu sukses dengan TDK, tahun ini Warner Bros merilis Harry Potter, tahun depan ngerilis Inception (sumpah film ini bakalan keren bgt deh soalnya barisan cast-nya top markotop + sutradaranya Christoper Nolan dan dananya hampir 300 juta dolar!), nah untuk 2011 film inilah yang akan dirilis. So, berarti film ini patut ditunggu.

Pertanyaanya adalah who is Green Lantern? Saya kira2 dari nama dan gambar dia mungkin hero yang ngebawa lentera hijau gitu ya kemana-mana. Kok kesannya ribet banget. Puitis apalagi. Lentera hijau? Cocok jadi judul puisi nih. Lol. Bukan saingan sama film horor Lentera Merah kan? Hehehe. Tolong dong kalau ada yang tahu tentang tokoh komik ini kasi tahu saya siapa si Green Lantern ini? Atau apa dia tokoh yang pernah muncul di serial Smallville bukan? Lagi males browse nih.

Tapi sebenernya bukan masalah sih. Dulu saya gak tahu sama sekali dengan Iron Man. Yang pasti dia dalam pikiran saya manusia besi atau mungkin tukang setrika (lol). Well, ketika ditonton saya puas karena Robert Downey Jr tampil menjanjikan ketika memperkenalkan siapa itu Iron Man kepada saya yang buta dengan tokoh komik ini. Filmnya bagus sih.

Will Ryan Reynolds nails the role? Atau malah kesan romkomnya masih pekat nempel? Kita lihat saja nanti. Asal jangan Justin Timberlake saja. No movie, just do it your new single. I miss your voice, not your movie. lol.

When you grow up watching cartoons, reading comic books, and seeing movies where the main character has super powers you tend to think about which ones you would want. Do you remember seeing the x-ray vision glasses that were sold on the back of comics? Those pieces of shit weren’t worth the shipping they cost to send them. Why weren’t they sued for false advertising? I was depending on them to help me see girls underwear on the playground. Finally realizing that you will never have the ability to run faster than a speeding locomotive may prove devastating to your young 22 year-old self. Let’s just say I held onto that dream longer than I should have. After looking over the list it occurred to me I’d most likely be a super villain rather than a super hero. Then again, super villain might be a bit harsh. It’s not like I’d try to take over the world, just the local bowling alley. Super prankster. Now there is a more apt description. Here are some more of my top superpowers:

1. Ability to stop time – Think of how productive you could be if you never had to sleep. This would enable you to stop time, get as much sleep as you wanted, and then start it back while having no actual time elapse. Additionally you could cause all kinds of chaos in the lives of people you don’t particularly care for. It would be pretty sweet to convince an enemy they were losing their mind by making their breakfast disappear everyday.
2. Teleport – Airports are not fun places to spend downtime and it seems as if there always is some when I fly. Due to high gas prices, higher flying costs, and the fact that travel takes all day teleportation would make life a whole lot easier. One hour commute to work? Not anymore. Plus it would be less of a burden when going on a trip. You could take toiletries larger than the travel sizes, which would be a welcome change.
3. Lasers from my eyes – I would never be locked out of anything, could boil water lots faster, and win lots of bar bets. “If I can move that glass on the other end of the bar from here without using my hands you pick up my tab.” Like shooting fish in a barrel.
4. A ring that could turn into anything I wanted – Those of you unfamiliar with the Green Lantern this is the super power he possesses. Other than that he is a pretty normal guy, but that is a pretty big other. Energy rings don’t grow on trees, because if they did I would be lounging around with my ring/green girlfriend.
5. X-Ray vision – A guy can dream can’t he?

Comic Book Comics #2 (*****)

Fred Van Lente is a guy you’ve probably heard of by now. Cowriter of The Incredible Hercules, upcoming writer of Marvel Zombies 3, Mr. Marvel Adventures. He’s all over the place. But Evil Twin Comics is where he puts out his best work. Comic Book Comics is another book that is chock full of edutainment in the same way the first issue and Action Philosophers were. This issue covers the war years of comics, hashing out the way superheroes died out to be replaced by Romance and Western comics, as well as the rise of EC’s slate of horror and science fiction books. Van Lente’s writing remains informative without becoming stale, which is always a tough thing to do when there is this much text that I guess could technically be considered “exposition.” And considering that there is no “host” character to lead us through, it’s all on Van Lente’s ability to walk the tightrope of being informative, funny, and generally not boring. Ryan Dunlavey’s art helps make the job easier with his breezy and cartoony style that effectively enhances the text without becoming intrusive or overtly flashy. I mean this is, for all intents and purposes, a kind of mini textbook. The stylization really helps note the differing ways folks were making comics back then while still allowing for the visual jokes to come through, like the Human Torch vs. Namor comics of the 1940’s being depicted as a jug of water and a lit match squaring off in a boxing ring, or the recurring theme of two unsupervised kids having a conversation while it is plain to see their parents having sex through a window right above them (“There are strange moans and creaking noises coming from mom and dad’s room!” “Must be S.S. code! We better warn Cap!”). The book takes us right up to the beginnings of The Seduction of the Innocent and Frederick Wertham’s attack on the comics industry, which is something I’m very much looking forward to reading from the point of view of these two crazy cats. This is a great read, and October couldn’t come sooner.

Ambush Bug: Year None #1(***1/2)

It’s not necessarily what I expected from this series going in. The only Ambush Bug I’ve actually read is his brief appearance in 52, so I think I was expecting a much more over the top and slapsticky sort of fourth wall breaking lunacy. Which is not to say that what I got was bad, but it was certainly different. The conceit is basically to parody the plot and tone of Identity Crisis, and I did love the way that Giffen poked fun at Meltzer’s repetition style in the caption boxes. I don’t know how much there is to say, really. I enjoyed it, got some laughs out of it, dug the art, looking forward to seeing it continue. It was a solid first issue. Nothing was blow away brilliant, nothing sucked. A bit middle of the road, but nothing that I regretted buying or reading.

Green Lantern Corps #26 (****)

I really enjoyed the Black Mercy/Ring Quest storyline. I like Mongul about as much as one can like a copy of a copy (by way of Thanos by way of Darkseid), and the Mother Mercy concept and how she viewed the purpose of the Black Mercy was certainly not the angle I expected them to take, and I think it worked in the favor of Peter Tomasi. And while it could be seen as cheesy to some, I did get a kick out of both rings picking the same successor (makes you wonder how fast both of those things would search out Batman if someone from Earth’s sector bit it), and while I think the decision was handled a bit too neatly, it still worked. Bzzt dies a hero, things are set to continue moving forward, and I still have my tiny thread of Green Lanterny goodness to hold onto until Geoff Johns returns to the here and now.

La verdad falta bastante para Enero de 2009, pero como es costumbre DC Direct muestra sus productos a lanzar con 8 meses de antelación para tener a todos los coleccionistas informado sobre lo que se viene, muy bien comencemos!
