Off to bed, my 2 day work week suddenly changed to 4 day.

I’m becoming old.

My patience for the new is at its limit and I have no want to understand the new generation. The fixie revolution in my aged mind has me privately judging and ridiculing. Colorful rims and handle bars, platform pedals, tight jeans and untouched hair. My vision of those who ride this discipline seem to always have the same look:

10 years ago you’d have to search a bit to find a frame company who made a fixed gear or track bike, now they’re a dime a dozen. Some companies have devoted their whole line up to fixed. Not only making frames but all the colorful parts to build it up with, and charging as much for a fixed gear bike as some multi geared bike…crazy, I know.

I was young.

Her name was Chrissy and she taught me to ride a bike when I was 5. Before that I was doing driveway slides on my late 70’s Green Machine Big Wheel.

By 7 I was racing BMX on my Supergoose and by 10 I was doing flatland and vert tricks on my Haro Master. Spinning around the bars, Cherry Picking, sitting on the bars riding backwards, no handers off the lip on my 6 foot 1/4 pipe my uncle built. Why did I do it? Because it was new, it was mine and it became my life. I devoted whole heartedly to my bike and the culture it surrounded me with. Was I judged? If I was, I could have cared less, I was in my element. Did aged cyclists cast their opinions about me and how I was fucking up cycling? Was BMX a flash in the pan? Perhaps, but almost 30 years later I’m still on my bike. The only problem, I am the one judging.

While my fleet of bikes is always growing, I must admit I have two fixed gear bikes in my line up. While I would never go back to platform pedals and my jeans are not skin-tight, I find myself visiting Velocity’s website thinking about green Deep V’s and Nitto riser bars. I guess, who’s the clown now?

Morning everyone!

Last night, my family and I went to my fave little French Bistro in Kenmore Sq., Petit Robert Bistro. I love it so much; it is just so quaint and amazing — it makes me long to go back to Paris. However, I am perfectly content with Petit Robert’s food … and especially their desserts … until then. Unfortunately no pictures — it really wasn’t the environment where that would have been appropriate, haha, but I wish I could have shown you the gorgeousness that graced my plate(s). haha

I got the “*Pan Seared U10 Scallops, Creamy Crab and Endive Sauce“. It was to.die.for. The thing I love about PR Bistro is that they give you just enough food — you’re not overly stuffed, but you get what you pay for. It was delicious and creamy, and mmmmMMM good. For dessert (a MUST), I got their special which was White Chocolate Bread Pudding. Ahh, this stuff is sooo good. The combo of creamy and crunchy — and just amazingness. haha Two thumbs up.

This morning, I rannn to class — I got a coffee (an ICED coffee because, temperature-wise, it’s gorrrgeous), and that was my breakfast. I then waited around to register for my next round of courses at 10. Thankfully, I got what I needed (although a 9am-er is not what I wanted, it’s later than this semester! haha).

I got back here, and cracked open a Naked Green Machine. I also have a sandwich waiting for me in the fridge — which I’m excited about. A tomato, basil and mozz sandwich. Yum, yum, yum, yum.

I’ve got a class later, and that’s about it. I’m looking forward to diving into that sandwich in a bit.haha

Morning all! Well, it’s almost afternoon, now, isn’t it? haha Thankfully the clouds that took up the sky earlier this morning are starting to part, and some sunshine is peaking through — but it’s still waaaay chilly out there!

I stopped by Starbucks and got my morning latte; unfortunately, I think the guy at the register didn’t hear me correctly, and I got a skinny vanilla instead of skinny hazelnut — I told the guy it was no big deal though…one, I didn’t want to be late to class, and two…not that big of a deal to me. However, in hindsight – I wish I had gotten it fixed because I realized (through lacks of sweets in my life) that some things are just “too sweet” for me now. Their sugar free vanilla syrup is one of those things. I drank about half of my drink, but ended up tossing the rest.

Though, not before getting a pic of the glorious red cup. hahahaha

Now some of you may be asking, “Jil, I thought you got an espresso maker. Why are you still buying lattes??” Well, unfortunately, after the first couple of (deliciously successful!) uses the little rubber ring that seals certain parts of my espresso maker — got burned or something. I think I may not have properly cleaned it, . I.E. I didn’t realize the rubber ring came out. The singed rubber makes for some not so tasty espresso (okay, so I never tasted it, but espresso smelled like burned rubber instead of coffee…so I assume it tasted like crap). haha I’m glad I found the source of the smell though – it’s an easy (and cheap) enough fix.  So this weekend I’m going to go find another rubber ring…I assume that I can find them at most hardware stores.

Anywho…so I stopped by DeLuca’s Market on Newbury and picked up some Nonfat Fage greek yogurt and some Naked Green Machine. A healthy part of a complete breakfast. haha I ran out of yogurt yesterday and it was a quick fix, and I also just ran out of Green Goodness. The guy who worked there was so nice; I think I was the only person in the store. If you’ve seen any of the recent pics of Katie Holmes when she was out and about in Boston, you’ve seen DeLuca’s. haha It’s just a tiny little grocery/convenience store, but they do good sandwiches and they carry some pretty stellar specialty items, too.

Anyway – BREAKFAST:

I’ve got a busy afternoon ahead of me, but I’m going to get some Subway (Eat Fresh!) for lunch. Yummm Veggie Delight!! haha

Today was a pretty good day overall. I’m happy that it’s over though. I don’t have have my normal class tomorrow sooo it’s officially the weekend for me! Woo! Unfortunately, that means I have about 1,001 things to do …cuz you know, professors are so good at spacing out all of the stuff you have due.

Today I watched the movie “Un Secret” for my French class…boy, was it..well, not depressing…but thought provoking. I kind of wish I owned it so that I could watch it again. There’s something odd about sitting in a computer lab, with headphones on, surrounded by strangers and watching a movie. haha

Anyway, onto the food! That’s the important part, right? haha Well, I went to Whole Foods around noon to find myself a bite to eat. NEVER again will I go to this particular store at noon. It’s was ridiiiculously busy (its location makes it an easy lunch spot).  It was like people had never seen food before. Plus, buffet etiquette was lacking so I passed on the whole “food bar” aspect.

I ended up getting a small portion of a run of the mill avocado roll. It was yummy. Nothing too exciting. It was just enough food though, and satisfied my hunger. I got a Green Machine from our little “lounge café” on campus – I had most of it but unfortunately forgot it in my last class…boo.

Oh, while I’m thinking of it…I tried  Trader Joe’s version of the Green Machine (“Trader Joe’s Very Green Juice Blend), and it was verrrrry close in taste. More than taste, it was just a touch more acidic than the Naked Juice version, but still very, very good.

Back on track now, I came home and immediate turned on the oven. Got out a zucchini, some cabbage, some olive oil, onion powder, salt, pepper, and red pepper flake and roasted the veggies. YUM!

I also broke out my trusty rice maker and made a tonnn of brown rice (6 cups cooked). I season it with some Mrs. Dash Seasoning – Southwest Chipotle. I love this thing. Best appliance I have in my apartment – fo sho.

I’ll probably have a little rice, later, when it’s done. For now, veggies and maybe some applesauce later. haha Oooh the possibilities!

Well, well. It’s the end of Wednesday isn’t it? Already? Whoo! haha I cannot believe what a 180 I did since yesterday…in terms of how I feel. It just served as an example to me as to just how important water is to our bodies — I mean I never really sit down and think about it, and sure I definitely drink enough of it. But…boy oh boy…major dehydration is NO GOOD!

Today I was so productive — yesterday, I was just going through the motions. I did some grocery shoppin’! I love me some Trader Joe’s. Of course, it was also a gorgeous fall day. One thing I’ve come to realize is that…yes, New England weather is as temperamental as it can get…but ya know what? The really crappy days make you reallllly appreciate the beautiful ones.

Anyway, I walked away from Trader Joe’s with tonnnns of stuff (for under $50 bucks…close..but still under!!)

I’m so excited to try the Pumpkin Pancake and Waffle Mix and the Pumpkin Butter. I saw Jenna bought some from TJ’s and it just looked so delicious that I had to buy it! Also, I’m really excited to try our their version of the “Green Machines” (Very Green Juice Blend) I’ve come to love. I was disappointed that they didn’t have it in the big size (though they had one in mango…so I got that one, too)…but the small one’s were easily half of the price of the others…so I scooped up a couple.

Breakfast…got myself a coffee. And had some pomegranate greek yogurt plus sunflower seeds. And then some popcorn and tea, which kind of held me through lunch.

I had class til about 7…so I came home and heated up some leftovers from last night — but added some extra soy sauce, some sesame seed oil and a few sunflower seeds (for crunch, obv). And I had some grapes with it. Random, I know.

I’ve got some work to do — and some organizing and cleaning to do as well….so I’m off! I hope everyone had a wonderful dayy!!

When I was a little kid I always  loved big wheels. But what I wanted even more was The Green Machine!!! I remember all the cool kids had ‘em and while I was riding around on my big wheel the other kids were doing circles around me in their Green Machines!! For some reason I was never able to get one. I think they were a little more pricey at the time or maybe it was because of how many cool ass dangerous moves you could pull off on one these puppies that made my parents fear this amazing vehicle! Anyway I ran across the commercial for it and the envious memories flooded back into my mind. Well now that I am older who’s to say you won’t see me finally cruisin’ the streets on my own Green Machine?!

This primitive defense mechanism is called “splitting”. To the narcissist, things and people are either entirely bad (evil) or entirely good. He projects onto others his own shortcomings and negative emotions, thus becoming a totally good object. A narcissistic leader is likely to justify the butchering of his own people by claiming that they intended to kill him, undo the revolution, devastate the economy, or the country, etc.

The “small people”, the “rank and file”, the “loyal soldiers” of the narcissist – his flock, his nation, his employees – they pay the price. The disillusionment and disenchantment are agonizing. The process of reconstruction, of rising from the ashes, of overcoming the trauma of having been deceived, exploited and manipulated – is drawn-out. It is difficult to trust again, to have faith, to love, to be led, to collaborate. Feelings of shame and guilt engulf the erstwhile followers of the narcissist. Woohooo!! TGIF! I am so excited that it is Friday! This weekend (which is loooong) I am going to do as much relaxing as humanly possible. My brother’s best friend is getting deployed to Afghanistan at the end of October (sadness) so we are having a small get-together with him tonight. I apologize in advance if I don’t make a post or it is lacking in pictures, I might be a little caught up!!! Look how empty my fridge is though…so sad. Shopping very, very soon.

Condiments, Laughing Cow, various waters, pre-cooked brown rice and some wine and champagne that I have yet to open (It was given to me as a housewarming/college graduation gift). Nothin’ perishable though, right now.

An amazing thing happened this morning — I didn’t get Starbucks. haha Instead I brought my Green Machine with my to class, and sipped on it through the lecture. However, after class, I went to Whole Foods and treated myself to Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Muffin!! So delicious and a great reward for the week.

Right now, I’m munchin’ on some Honey Oikos (to which I added sunflower seeds) and preparing to clean my apartment HARDCORE! haha

The heat is on. The heat is o-onnn! Yep, quite literally. haha The heat has turned on in the morning, in my apartment building, for the last two mornings. I thoroughly enjoy waking up to a cozy apartment; however, right now my windows are open because I got back from class and it was a touch too warm. I’d rather have it a little too warm than freezing, though.  Especially with New England winters!! (I can’t control the heat; I live in a brownstone and it’s all gas heat through radiators.)

Today, I waited until the last possible second to get out of bed . I think I gave myself a max of 15 min to get up, dressed and ready…and I did it! haha I think I even had a few minutes to spare. Apparently, I can be pretty speedy when I want to be!

Ahh, so the morning routine began with my usual (and totally required) Starbucks run. I got a tall skinny hazelnut latte. I’ve decided to go the “tall” route cuz well, 1. fewer calories…even though it’s a skinny drink; the less of it there is, the better and 2. my drink’s price has gone up (3¢…but still, up), and a “tall” is the perfect amount for me, and a much better price point.

Once again, I snapped a secretive photo in the elevator on my way to class. I apologize for my ugly/chipped manicure. haha

Class got out early YAY! I went to Whole Foods to see if I could find the larger version (or any version) of my new love, the Green Machine – Naked Juice. They didn’t have anything – so I left empty handed. That’s pretty much a miracle, considering how many things I did want.

I ended up finding some at a local 7-Eleven; they’re expensive (approx $4 a pop) so I only bought two, but I figured I’d be good and try and stretch them out. They are just so good though!!

I’m now back at my apartment; I am having some super, delicious watermelon from Trader Joe’s and a portion of the lovely Green Machines, found at 7-Eleven. haha I don’t know what I’m going to do for lunch, maybe a little rice or something. I’m really craving pizza. Maybe I’ll treat myself tonight.:)

I saw someone describe the color of the Green Machines as “Ninja Turtle Green” — and you know what? that’s perfect…they really are. haha I enjoy the fact that while drinking them in class or public people look at you like you’re nuts for drinking something that looks so unusual.

Okay, I’m off until later! I need to MAJORLY clean my apartment, too – it’s like my clothing exploded. I would show you – but it’s too embarrassing. haha

So today was a prime example of New England weather. As I already posted, you saw the first part of the day – rainy, wet – gross. Then miraculously, about 20 minutes after I had posted that blog…the rain stopped, clouds disappeared and the skies were the bluest I’ve seen in a while. It was gorgeous. THEN – don’t tell me you thought it ended there?? haha – about an hour later…all of a sudden clouds of death rolled in, and the skies just OPENED…it surprised me, and even more-so the people outside who I could hear screeching about the sudden onslaught of rain. THEN – the skies cleared again and it was, well, a gorgeous fall evening.

My walk to class in the early evening was the polar opposite of my walk to class in the early morning!

I have been craving chocolate, so on my way to class I stopped and got a dark chocolate Toblerone bar.  It’s been so long since I’ve had a Toblerone, but it was and still is delicious! I also picked up another Green Machine – Naked Juice.

Now, it’s on to dinner – I made some (okay, 6 cups cooked) brown rice in my rice cooker last night (best purchase for the apartment so far!), so it’s the usual brown rice, salsa, Laughing Cow light & mixing it up with some corn tonight!! Trader Joe’s roasted frozen corn, to be exact. It is seriously SO delicious. I will never look at frozen corn the same way again. Plus, some sparkling water with a lime wedge – just feelin’ a little fancy.

Such good salsa -- highly recommended if you're not into really chunky salsas -- it's very smooth.

Today was a really good day, and I’m looking forward relaxing and to a good night’s sleep. Is there any good TV on tonight? I can never keep track!! I’ll curl up and channel surf with my Toblerone. haha By the way, what did you guys think of The Biggest Loser last night?? Anyone else watch?

Ahh, I have to say, I am glad today is over. It is only Tuesday, but the week seems like it should be over already. Anyone else feel the same way? Not a good sign of things to come. haha I’ve just been really tired, and I’m honestly looking forward to a weekend of doing nothing – well, except working… BUT it’s a long weekend, and that’s always a plus!! Gosh, here I am blabbering on about the weekend and it’s not even Wednesday yet. haha

Anyway, so it was an early one…well, technically every day is an early one. I was up, out the door, coffee in hand, and in class for 8:30am. I managed to snap this pic of my coffee in the elevator – so incognito of me!

Class went well, got out early…which gave me the opportunity to get home and  EAT. I munched on a portion of a banana – some of it was just too bruised. I threw that part in the freezer though for some future banana bread-making endeavors!! Frugal, frugal, frugal! I also had a Trader Joe’s Fat Free Greek Yogurt – Honey flavored. I add sunflower seeds for some added crunch!! (Pre-shelled, of course).

I had a meeting at 1, so I had some downtime; which…I was a blob. I’ll admit it; I did nothing. However, I made it to my meeting, and then I got some “sushi” and a tea from Whole Foods. (Not pictured, unfortunately). The “sushi” was yummy a.k.a. a veggie roll made of brown rice, sesame seeds, cucumber, avocado and nori. The tea was – mehh. – I forget which brand it was, but I think it was more the fact that it was iced tea, that got somewhat warm before I could drink any, that was the problem.

I also grabbed a Naked Juice – Green Machine. So delicious.  It has a good chunk of sugar (from the fruit, no added sugars!!), especially since I drink the whole thing, which equates to two servings, but it’s just what my body needs to power through my last class of the day and hold me over until dinner.

Now, I have a ton to do tonight – so a good meal is necessary. I’m having brown rice with Trader Joe’s Autentica Salsa and a wedge of Laughing Cow Light, some unsweetened applesauce and some of Trader Joe’s Blueberry and Pomegranate Green Tea, again. I think I’ll probably also make some roasted corn later on.

On another note…they’re still filming for the Kevin James movie, “Zookeeper” around here. The filming signs are ever-present!

The Green Machine

used in Shake-A-Leg Miami’s beginner sailing program. Together, Ricardo, Melissa, and I took The Green Machine’s interior from faded and jaded to sparkling new again, applying a series of Star brite products and elbow grease. What fantastic results!

I’ve got to say, that was the high point of my weekend, which had been fraught with false starts and aggravations.

Once we saw how sharp Green Machine looked, including its newly painted hull (color: Interlux Matterhorn White), I sent Ricardo and Melissa off to find more dinghies for our anticipated large crew of  Sept. 26 volunteers to clean. Alas. Little Green was the only one that did not need additional work in the form of removing old paint. So back to “Go” on that idea.

We had some other course corrections this week, too. Remember how much I liked the photo of the kids in the hangar as they flowed past the newly painted boats? I loved how that image showed multiple aspects of Shake-A-Leg Miami co-existing, but it also made it clear that we needed a better way to organize our workspace to minimize exposure. No small fingerprints on fresh paint, no sanding dust under small feet.

Consequently, we are switching to a divide-and-conquer space arrangement with the addition of an enclosed space outside, in close proximity to an approved water-containment tank; and, inside, we are taking new measures to contain dust, primarily through wet sanding, hauling water, and other evidence of the Ship Shape Team’s ingenuity for solving any problem that we throw its way.

One more course correction: Our first coats of “Fighting Lady Yellow” and “Royal Blue” were thrilling, even though we knew we needed better coverage.  Our second coats applied last Wednesday gave us the coverage we wanted, but also left slight ridging from the primer, and left me feeling a little discouraged when I saw them Friday afternoon.

We had planned to go on to paint another brace of Freedoms on Saturday, but we still needed to finish boot striping the first two, and none of us were ecstatic about the gloss or the smoothness, so we set to work preparing for yet another coat for each boat.

Ray Talks Tape

The best part of the day was listening to SALM staffer Ray Rautenberg explain how to lay down tape for the boot stripe. He is a gifted teacher with great attention to details. I wish I could have him working on the Ship Shape project all the time, but he’s needed for other duties, too.

Ray then got us started on the familiar roll-and-tip painting method once again, following all the same steps we’d already done twice. We were out of Royal Blue, so I put in a call to Interlux’s Joe Purtell for more, and we’ll apply that Wednesday or Saturday, depending on availability of team members.

The “Fighting Lady Yellow” looked great by the end of the day, but on Sunday morning, I saw to my great disappointment that beneath the gloss we had microscopic bubbles, perhaps not even visible to many eyes.  Now the question is, do it again in our quest for perfection? Or call it a training exercise and move on?  I’ll wait to hear from the paint experts, but I suspect most of the crew wants to do it again.

So, Sunday was not a great day. Several expected volunteers called to say they needed a break, or just did not show up. Still we had enough to push ahead with prepping three more dinghy hulls, and then there was the triumph of The Green Machine!

I think I’ll be glad when this week is over. I have a lot of projects to complete in my “real” job, getting ready for an online event for Professional BoatBuilder magazine, and prepping for the upcoming IBEX show.

I’m finding out that scheduling boats for repair is an ongoing nightmare. Okay, that may be an exaggeration, but it’s an incredible balancing act to provide boats for all the SALM activities, and still pull out ones that need repair and painting, knowing they may be out of service for several days or weeks at a time.

That may be easier in the near future, though. Ship Shape Team Member Emma Wicks has picked up where I left off on learning about “BackTrack” software, offered to us by Norman Katz of www.katzscan.com. Emma and Norm have already come up with a plan for implementing this software that will – eventually – make life easier for everyone at SALM by letting us track just about what ever needs tracking, i.e. small children, boats, supplies, and equipment.

At the same time, our surveyor Pat Kearns and her associate Janine Skula are wrapping up their assessment of the fleet and facilities. Pat says it won’t be a pretty picture, but it will be a serious system-restore point for the work that needs to be done to bring SALM to the forefront of “Best Practices” for community boating centers.

We now have just about 2 1/2 weeks left before our reception for the marine industry on October 11. We’re expecting bout 200 boatbuilders, marine educators, yard managers, and vendors to visit SALM. Again, our goal is to convince them that this is a place that deserves the industry’s support and warrants their continued interest.

Being the middle class comic book reading white young person that I am, you better believe I can dance. You might even consider me a student of dance. I mean, if you consider Mr. Miyagi a student of Karate.

Not likely.

Now you’re probably saying out loud to your computer, “Kev, you’re no braggart. What gives?” It’s true. I can’t toot my own horn, no matter how hard I try, but when you’re a maniac on the floor, sometimes you gotta get a little maniacal. And braggy. J.C. Chasez will tell you the same thing.

Some people call it ‘cutting a rug.’ I’m not so mirugynistic. I call it ‘making hot love to the rug with my feet penis.’ I get a lot of weird looks from people when I say that. You know, a lot of people told Picasso that he painted eyes and mouths in the wrong places. Guess what? It’s supposed to be like that, dummy. Being an artist is tough.

Now, I’ve never had any formal training in my art of choice. I’m self-taught. Like Bob Dylan and Mark McGrath. But that doesn’t mean I don’t feel what Ernest Hemingway says the Spaniards call aficion. I feel a ton of aficion. Butt loads. That’s why I can appreciate the grace and passion and sexuality of dance in everything I see. But especially in dancing flowers.

As you might know, I’m usually very professional when it comes to these posts. It takes weeks of research on each subject before I even feel halfway close to beginning a new entry. Chalk it up to my upbringing. I was always taught, “Be thorough, or don’t.” Not a lot of options there. However, I feel that in this particular instance I’m just going to go with my gut. Wing it. Since when did a ballerina care about who wrote the ballet? She just feels it in her dainty bones.

The dancing flower was invented sometime in the 80s by a millionaire. It became extremely popular because it was probably scientifically PROVEN to turn all frowns upside down. All you had to do was put that bad boy next to a speaker, pump out the jams, and, voilà, seconds of entertainment. But what if I’m walking from my car into work and I don’t have a way of producing music for a mid-trip flower dance pick-me-up? Don’t worry. You can sing a little tune yourself. Or just speak. Snap your fingers a couple times even. That flower will boogie back and forth regardless. Hell, you could just sit all day insulting the thing–it’s still groovin’. Can you say the same for Beyonce?

Also, the dancing flower wore sunglasses so you know it’s cool. Plus, it usually held some type of instrument so it’s almost as if the flower is playing the music it’s dancing to. America hadn’t seen that much thought put into a toy since the Glo Worm.

You might remember that the dancing flower wasn’t the only dancing novelty toy on the block. That’s right! There was also the dancing Coca-Cola can. The dancing Coke can also rocked the sunglasses, but wore headphones instead of playing an instrument. Whoa. Talk about upping the ante. The success of the dancing flower and Coke can affected society to an unexpected degree, inspiring other inanimate objects to “dance” such as the Green Machine frog band, the toaster in Ghostbusters II, and Al Gore.

If you think the dancing flower was a stupid idea then I don’t want to hear about it. You obviously don’t get it. Go back to watching something sit idly. An artist can become jaded with his art. I understand this. I doubt the winner of American Idol plays American Idol: The Video Game to relax, and a sculptor most likely doesn’t grab some Play-Doh when he’s feeling down, but, as a dancer, I can tell you that there’s nothing better than coming home from a hard day, throwing on some Huey Lewis, and swaying back and forth with your favorite floral friend. And that’s what matters most. You can’t put a price on comfort. But if you did, it would probably be around $14.99.

I haven’t seen a dancing flower in years but I know in my heart of hearts that it’s waiting in the wings. Waiting for the perfect time to make its wobbly move. And when it does, don’t call it a comeback.

The quality of this video sucks, but the flower just rocks so hard. GET IT, FLOWER!

As for this video, it’s like the internet knew exactly what I wanted.

Lastly, I would like to dedicate this post to Swayze. The dirtiest dancer of them all. RIP.
