“Kad nogāzās mūris, sociālisms un komunisms bija nofeilojuši. So– daļa sabiedrības palika aplauzti.

A gift is a wonderful way to show your heartfelt affection and commitment to a mutually established

A gift is a wonderful way to show your heartfelt affection and commitment to a mutually established relationship. Offering gifts is a beautiful gesture that not only fosters an existing bond between you and the receiver, but also takes your relationship to the next level. We always start with a beautiful thought in our mind before we even start buying a gift for the person we love and care. However, many of us may not be aware of this fact that our very choice of product items affects people’s lives around the world! The gift products we buy are often made by people who struggle to make a fair living, and work in precarious working conditions allowing themselves to exploitation. Hence, while we make a choice to buy gift products as a noble gesture, we should also consider doing justice to the people who make them. Fair Trade Gifts revolve around the concept of helping millions of people earn not only a fair wage and an honest living, but also dignity. When you choose a product from an online store that promotes fair trade gifts, your gift becomes even more meaningful and valuable for the receiver.

Fair trade gifts are essentially more than just gifts; they allow you an opportunity to actively contribute to the noble mission of helping millions of poor artisans, farmers, craft producers and other workers who might be able to provide for their families’ basic needs and enjoy a decent living that they deserve. When you choose to buy gifts from an online store that promotes fair trade, you support a great cause to make this world a better place to live in.

Great deeds begin with great thoughts; fair trade gifts offer you a unique opportunity to bring a smile not only to the receiver, but also to the person who toils to make such a beautiful gift. In other words, fair trade gifts enable you to contribute to the noble cause of helping those millions of under-privileged people achieve a fair and equitable earning in different parts of the global village. What makes your choice of fair trade gifts even better is the fact that they are mostly eco-friendly as they are manufactured using materials that are environmentally safe. Hence, fair trade gifts serve the dual purpose of helping the less-privileged people around the world and supporting to the ecology, making the world a better place to live in.

Free trade gifts are the most ethical way to show your affection towards the person you love and care. Recognising someone’s commitment to a relationship by offering gifts is a noble gesture. By choosing gifts that promote fair trade is the kindest gesture you can ever show to the person you love. A beautiful thought begets a noble action; nothing makes your gesture more special for the receiver than choosing gifts that promote fair trade. If you want to offer the most precious gift to the person you care, choosing the fair trade gifts is the best option.

As the first snow blankets the land, most of us retreat inside, spending much less time outdoors c

As the first snow blankets the land, most of us retreat inside, spending much less time outdoors compared to the previous six months. We have learned in the north to cope with the cold, and the wet and soggy conditions on the respective coasts, by building homes and workplaces that are warm and weather proofed. So how does the rest of the animal kingdom in our province contend with winter?

There are three basic strategies for surviving winter’s rigors: migration, hibernation and resistance. From an evolutionary stance, they amount to choices between avoidance and confrontation. Animals either leave the frozen landscape for warmer and more hospitable lands to the south or, with remarkable stamina and adaptations, they stick around.

At first glance, migration appears to be a safe alternative. It is for some, but like all choices, there are consequences. A 600-mile flight costs birds 50 percent of their total body weight as fat. And adding more weight for flight has practical limitations.

In addition, waterfowl have added stresses imposed by humans as hunters gather along migratory routes. A Canada goose that leaves Atlin, British Columbia in early September and arrives near the Salton Sea in southern California may face three months of being a target for shooters. The goose season opens progressively later southward along the route.

Some birds, like herons, are specialists and they cannot change when environmental conditions change. The slightest cover of ice prevents the heron from making its living: fishing. Others, like fly catchers, need insects and when it gets cold their food source metamorphosizes, so they must fly south. Many birds have no other choice but to migrate.

It would cost a mammal of the same weight about 10 times more energy moving over a given distance by running compared to a flying. In nature, there are always exceptions. The caribou move hundreds of miles between summer breeding grounds in tundra and winter boreal forests of northeast British Columbia. Marine mammals, like blue whales, migrate vast distances as swimming appears to be even more energetically cost efficient than flying.

Hibernation is a viable alternative to migration for some. Hibernating mammals posses a unique ability to lower both their metabolism and body temperature. They cannot, however, drop below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. If they near the freezing mark then they awaken, restore body temperature to its normal state before re-entering hibernation. That costs a large amount of their fat reserves and could jeopardize their chance of surviving the winter.

Cold blooded animals like reptiles and amphibians cannot control their body temperatures so hibernation is their only means of survival. Most seek out safe winter hiding places usually under decaying logs, deep protected rock crevices or in the burrows of other animals where they can escape subfreezing temperatures. For instance, rattlesnakes in the Kamloops, British Columbia region congregate in rock dens or the 50,000 red-sided garter snakes at Narcisse Snake Pits Wilderness Park in Manitoba.

Some frogs tolerate ice formation in the space between their cells and protect their living cells with a sweat alcohol called glycerol. Others, supercool their bodies so that they can tolerate temperatures of about minus 23 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperatures drop below this critical point the frog will snap-freeze all at once and die.

For many organisms that do not migrate or hibernate there only strategy is to resist the cold. Over-wintering insects and tree buds for example do not generate any appreciable heat so they must depend upon complex biochemical mechanisms to protect them from freezing temperatures. Mountain pine bark beetles produce glycerol which prevents ice formation in their body tissues, permitting them to cool without freezing to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Many animals are well adapted to contend with snow. Spruce grouse grow extra scales on their feet enabling them to grip the snow while feeding on icy branches. Caribou, with feet seemly way out of proportion to their body size, float over snow as if walking on snow-shoes. Lnyx, too, have huge snow-shoe-like paws which enable them to walk on snow without sinking. And the musculature of the moose legs enable them to move through four feet of snow with ease.

All of the organisms that live in northern North America are miraculously adapted to cope with winter. Those that are not must migrate to warmer environs. Each strategy has its advantages and dangers.

Bored in the notion that there MUST be more exciting things to be done at this time of night.

AS EVERY RECOGNIZED COUNTRY (192) ON PLANET EARTH MEETS IN COPENHAGEN ON DECEMBER 7, 2009 TO ADDRESS

AS EVERY RECOGNIZED COUNTRY (192) ON PLANET EARTH MEETS IN COPENHAGEN ON DECEMBER 7, 2009 TO ADDRESS CLIMATE CHANGE — THERE IS TERRIFIC OPPORTUNITY FOR THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST — PARTICULARLY BRITISH COLUMBIA — TO UTILIZE ITS ANCIENT FORESTS AND DERIVE A STEADY INCOME STREAM.

This story ran on January 22, 2009 in the Victoria Times Colonist http://www.drreese.com/resources/OldGrowth.pdf

Seven western states and four provinces have joined forces in a plan to limit greenhouse gas emissions. An entire new source of long-term revenue is available to British Columbia’s government, which will enable protecting massive tracks of old growth forests and fresh water supplies.

The Western Climate Initiative includes: Arizona, California, Montana, New Mexico, Washington, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec, and they have agreed to cut the region’s carbon emissions by 15 percent below 2005 levels by 2020.

The backbone of their plan relies on a system of cap and trade. It is a system that was successfully devised and implemented in the early 1990s to combat acid rain around the Great Lakes caused by the pollution generated from coal burning power plants.

The cap and trade system reduces pollution by requiring utility and other companies to meet tough emission standards. Under this system, businesses that cannot cut their emissions because of costs or technical hurdles would be allowed to buy emission credits from companies that have spent the money to clean-up and lower their emissions.

Most large industrial polluters, automakers and coal-based utilities are scrambling to find companies to sell them offset credits.

In 1990 (Science, Feb 9) Mark Harmond of Oregon State University and others found that the conversion of Pacific northwest old growth forests to young fast growing forests did not decrease atmospheric carbon as compared to old growth forests which capture and store vast amounts of carbon dioxide. In fact, it took those low elevation second growth forests at least 200 years to accumulate the carbon dioxide storage capacity of existing old growth forests.

In other words, British Columbia’s standing old growth forests are valuable but not just as milled saw-timber or pulp. British Columbia’s old growth is a gold mine for burgeoning worldwide offset markets, as well as its bountiful medicines and other valuable non-timber forest products.

Marriott International with over 3,000 global properties has partnered with Conservation International and is the first hotel company to calculate its carbon footprint and launched an aggressive worldwide campaign to lessen its impact.

Each year it uses 3.2 million tons of CO2 or 66 pounds per available room. To offset this they have undertaken a remarkable initiative. Marriott is spending millions of dollars over a long-term period to protect 1.5 million acres of endangered rainforests (because forests absorb and store CO2) in the Juma Sustainable Development Reserve in partnership with the state of Amazonas in Brazil.

If Brazil is renting its forests for millions of dollars then why shouldn’t the government of British Columbia consider its options?

In the late 1960s a young assistant professor (now Emeritus) Peter Dooling at the Faculty of Forestry, University of British Columbia taught a nascent discipline of forest recreation. Dr. Dooling predicted that forest recreation and tourism would become a major industry in British Columbia.

Today, British Columbia tourism is a multi-billion dollar industry rivaling that of forestry. The 2010 Whistler/Vancouver Olympics will easily tip the scale and soon thereafter tourism revenue will exceed that of forestry.

As the world recession deepens and the mighty U.S. housing market continues to sputter and stall, thousands of BC forestry workers are being dislocated.

It is perplexing and frustrating that North Americans buying furniture at IKEA must settle for Scots pine grown and manufactured in Lapland when millions of acres of British Columbia’s lodgepole pine are salvage-logged and pulped rather than manufactured and sold throughout the continent (and elsewhere) as distressed cottage pine furniture.

With more than 60 British Columbia glaciers receding, securing fresh water supplies are of paramount importance and maintaining high elevation old growth forests, which capture, retain and slowly release billions of gallons of snow melt in the springtime is priceless.

While maintaining the integrity of the Brazilian forests are important so too are the last of British Columbia’s contiguous great temperate rainforests. Why not rent some of the old growth forests, take advantage of their potent ability to absorb enormous amounts of CO2 and provide a buffer against climate change.

Recently, while traveling on the eastern seaboard I was asked by school children where the most remarkable remaining wild forests in North America were located? My answer: British Columbia.

The land base of British Columbia is astounding 95 million hectares and it contains picturesque fjords, jagged peaks, glaciers and more than 70 per cent of the 409 species of birds and 163 species of mammals known to breed in Canada – it’s biologically rich; and the critters depend upon forests for their habitat.

In fact, globally forests recycle rain, create oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, hold soils in place and control the flow of water to our rivers, which in many cases feed our oceans. Ultimately, forests provide us with the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink and over 7,000 medicines to keep us healthy.

British Columbia’s forest ecosytems are young – 14,000 years ago glaciers a couple miles thick receded, very quickly.

Lichens – those half algae and half fungus – landed first on bare rocks secreting acids, working with frost and other weathering processes making small openings for mosses and with the help of bacteria created the first soils.

The trees – lodgepole pines, spruces, hemlocks, firs, larches, aspens, alders, poplars and birches invaded the lands and quickly colonized them.

The diversity of landforms or topography and the types of forests are breathtaking; ecologically each forest type is a jewel and they all evolved to cope with change; wildfires, insect infestations, diseases, avalanches and 200 kilometre and hour winds than blow forests down.

The Garry oak woodlands of the southern tip of Vancouver Island are gorgeous. They rely on the Stellar’s Jay to eat the acorns – their seeds, and help to distribute the trees by burying acorns in the ground and sometimes forgetting about them.

The Sitka spruce along the west side of Vancouver island and continuing for 1,800 miles north into Alaska are the monarchs of the coastline. They tolerate the onslaught of salty ocean air – that corrodes metal within decades – and live almost 1,000 years reaching heights surpassing 311 feet.

Rufous, Anna’s, black-chinned and calliope hummingbirds appear in these forests in late spring or early summer. They travel at 50 miles per hour and have migrated over 1,700 miles from their wintering habitat in Mexico.

With rolling shoulders and 200 wing beats per second, these critters are Nature’s helicopters – they must visit at least 1,000 flowers a day drinking nectar for energy and inadvertently cross pollinating the plants.

Equally impressive are the colossal-sized western redcedars. One tree on Meares Island near Tofino has a staggering circumference of 66 feet. The wood is highly rot resistant and the First Peoples of British Columbia used it for houses, totem poles, dugout canoes, bentwood boxes, paddles and ceremonial drums.

Twenty five percent of the world’s bald eagles live in those forests and many of their inter-generational nests weighing a whopping 3,900 pounds are high-up in the treetops.

These forests also provide crucial habitat for the rare red-ochre or salmon coloured coastal wolves along the Great Bear rainforest that are dependent upon the intact ancient forests that provide streams for hundreds of millions of salmon.

It turns out that those salmon not only feed the wolves, ravens, eagles, bears (spirit, black and grizzlies) and 196 other species of animals but also 80 percent of the marine-based nitrogen comes from the remains of salmon carcasses dragged from the stream into the forests.

Perhaps the tallest tree to ever live on the planet grew in Lynn Valley – a Douglas-fir in the 19th century was felled and measure at 452.7 feet.

These ancient exquisite forests are home to the endangered spotted owls. Each owl eats about 100 flying squirrels a year, each flying squirrel is responsible for fertilizing the old growth forests by spreading soil fungus spores in their poop which nourishes millions of tree roots.

Billions of aspen trees in the far north are a critical food source for beavers and moose. Beavers regenerate aspen forests by breaching their damns and flooding the land – aspens respond by growing new forests for existing mature root systems.

The fire-loving lodgepole pine forests of the north provide habitat for the gray shadow of the northern woods – the lynx. A powerful cat that thrives in the snow, occasionally hunts in packs and is an exceptional swimmer.

In the autumn, the deciduous subalpine larches of southern British Columbia turn golden; they are home to the most complete and supreme mountaineer on the continent – the magnificent mountain goat.

The intricate web of life in the forest provides an essential place for every organism whether it’s a 2,000-year-old coastal yellow cedar or a glorious yellow glacier lily or microscopic soil bacteria.

Hackers Get The Upper Hand – Global Warming Really ‘Exposed’?

By: Simranjeet (Nate)

(Interested in more information? Visit http://tinyurl.com/globalwarmingisascam)

So as you can see, so far right off the get go of this post, you see the possibility already that Global Warming is a fake. Maybe this tiny fact isn’t enough, but is it enough to catch your attention to this post here? Maybe you have heard of Greenpeace and seen Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” and your a green supporter!

I have something to challenge what you’ve been told about these “theories” by spokes men, and supposedly “Top Scientist”. I have something simple and straight forward about Global Warming, something that can save you much more then you think when you finally come to the conclusion that this balderdash information is wrong and something fishy is taking place globally.

1st off I would like to share a concern with you. Although I’m not an advocate of dirty energy I do support that everyone should have access to energy. If you have been a follower of this site you’ll see I’m in favor of alternative energies, but. Being that the places we’ve been taken by globalist control, there’s been a lot of suppression on alternative energies, that are more price effective and logical for individual home-residence usage.

But since those are not available for mass usage, we have to find a way to use these cheap effective energies in developing countries such as Africa, but I do not support waste dumping in areas not appropriate or cutting down of tree’s or anything of this.

More importantly then any though, is that Global Warming was not created because we we're running into a real problem, the cycles we have seen throughout hundreds of thousands of years shows that what we are dealing with is normal.

So what this really does is just create a scare that claims ‘humans are responsible’ for this damage of the world. By creating this global idea was just to create carbon taxes on you and everything you like and do. Thusly taxing the world, merging further into a one world government. But with such a lie exposed at great speed as this one, this is more damaging then any other front for their agenda. This blow, when it finally hits them will just show more of their fabricated misinformation and more and more people will resist further claims of Global Warming, Terrorist, Al Quaeda, Economic Reasoning or Swine Flu and it will all be tossed under the microscope by independent researchers, such as you, me and others every time they put a new piece on the chess board to challenge true motives of what might be.

Climategate: Dr. Tim Ball on the hacked CRU emails

(Retired climatologist Dr. Tim Ball joins us to discuss the significance of the recently leaked emails and documents from the Climate Research Unit at East Anglia University which expose deceit about Global Warming)

To catch you up, recently hackers got into the Climate Research Unit and spread information about government cover up of tests done to prove global warming was false and it was to be kept under wraps the exact emails that were either hacked or leaked from the Climate Research Unit at East Anglia University we’re placed on the internet weeks after they we’re first sent to Paul Hudson, a weather presenter and climate correspondent for the BBC, notes on his blog “I was forwarded the chain of e-mails on the 12th October,”.

Surviving winter in the great outdoors is difficult especially when body temperature is unreg

Surviving winter in the great outdoors is difficult especially when body temperature is unregulated and subjected to subfreezing temperatures. Insects and amphibians have some remarkable adaptations that enable them to successfully over-winter.

The dangers of ice formation in insects and amphibians are similar to those of freezing in plants. Ice must be prevented from growing within cells, instead growing in a controlled fashion in spaces between cells.

Insects either allow themselves to freeze or they avoid freezing altogether. Each strategy is not without risks.

Insects that avoid freezing, like the mountain pine bark beetles, actively lower their super-cooling point, and prevent ice formation by lowering their freezing point enabling them to tolerate temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

In order to achieve this level of tolerance they select a dry hibernating site. A waxy outer layer is impermeable to water and it serves as an excellent mechanical barrier against external ice seeding. One organ within bugs that is particularly susceptible to freezing is their gut. So insects empty it, completely, before the onset of hibernation.

In order to super-cool their blood (correctly called hemolymph) they manufacture anti-freeze proteins, alcohols, sugars and even ethylene glycol (the same compound we use in our radiators). The correct mix of anti-freeze compounds blocks ice formation and prevents its growth.

Supper-cooling is a gamble. At any temperature below 32 degrees Fahrenheit the only stable state in which water can exist is solid. Any kind of disturbance for a super-cooled bug results in spontaneous flash freezing – an instant death.

The only way to avoid this risk is to promote early and gradual freezing of fluids between cells more specifically in the cell walls. And it’s a strategy used by a variety of insects, some frogs, garter snakes and hatchlings of the painted turtle.

There are four requirements in order to successfully freeze: ice growth is promoted at temperatures just beneath 32 degrees Fahrenheit; it must be restricted to spaces between cells; the total amount of body ice is limited; and cell membranes must be protected from structural damage.

The ability to create early ice formation is unique and it is undertaken by special ice-attracting proteins in fluids between cells in their walls. These proteins are manufactured in the autumn and disappear in the spring. They essentially reduce energy barriers needed to make ice and promote a lattice (just like a fence) for ice formation.

Here’s the tricky part: If ice grows unchecked (i.e. larger and larger) it will dehydrate the inside of cells. The lethal limit of ice, in a living organism, seems to be about 65 percent of total body weight. In order to control ice, once its formation is induced, freeze-tolerant organisms must also make anti-freeze proteins. Their job is to keep ice masses small.

Some bugs in the far north are so well adapted that they posses the ability to switch yearly between freezing or super-cooling!

How do insects know when to get ready for winter? Just like plants in the Northern Hemisphere insects rely on low, above freezing, air temperatures and reduced daylight hours as their cue to get ready to freeze, or barf and get on the super-cooling rollercoaster.

Land hibernating frogs, with water permeable skin, must withstand freezing. They over-winter beneath a scant cover of leaf litter under snow where they may experience subfreezing temperatures and are not able to control their body temperatures. In one of Mother Nature’s most awesome winter feats spring peepers, chorus frogs, grey tree frogs and wood fogs freeze solid and resemble a hard baseball.

They do this by initiating freezing at minus 36 degrees Fahrenheit with high amounts of the sugar glucose (rather than alcohols that bugs use). Glucose is extremely important in protecting membranes like skin.

Very suddenly glycogen (stored glucose) in the liver is rapidly converted to glucose (sugar) and dumped quickly into the blood stream. In fact the glucose level increases 200-fold in about eight hours, until the frog becomes severely diabetic.

Not only is this risky but it becomes a race to deliver the sugar to the body tissues while freezing is progressing. A strong heart is mandatory to pump and within one minute of the first ice formation a frog’s heart beat doubles.

Within 20 hours after initial freezing 60 to 65 percent of its body water is frozen. Their heart stops, breathing ceases – the frog teeters on the edge of life. The thin litter layer and a good insulative snow cover are of paramount importance. For no frog has yet been found to survive below minus 19 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once temperatures rise in the spring, within an hour of thawing, the heart resumes beating, six hours later at 41 degrees Fahrenheit the heart rate is back to normal.

To freeze or not to freeze? It’s a question that Mother Nature has at least two exceptional answers for.

Nineteenth century author, naturalist and founder of the Sierra Club – John Muir called the giant Se

Nineteenth century author, naturalist and founder of the Sierra Club – John Muir called the giant Sequoia “the noblest of a noble race” for many worthy reasons.

These exquisite specimens date back to at least 150 million years ago to the Jurassic Period – a time when the great plant-eating dinosaurs ruled the land and the ocean was stocked with the great ichthyosaurs and the long-necked plesiosaurs.

Magnificent giant Sequioas once thrived from Alaska to the Midwest, from Europe to the Orient and even in Greenland.

Big trees, as they are affectionately known, have survived epic geologic upheavals and extreme climate changes. As a matter of fact, on Specimen Ridge in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, there’s a fossilized 26-foot Sequoia stump jutting up amongst 40 million year old volcanic debris.

About 18 million years ago the remaining giant Sequoia populations mostly occurred in southern Idaho and western Nevada. As the climate cooled and continued to dry-out the giant Sequoia were forced to migrate southwest. They managed to expand their range west into California before the Sierra Nevada range became the formidable backbone of the state. The mountains cut-off any moisture and the eastern population of big trees perished.

When the early settlers discovered these colossal trees they senselessly felled and abandoned them because they were simply too big and too costly to handle. To give you some idea of their stature it took four men working 22 days to fell one tree.

John Muir convinced newspaperman Colonel George W. Stewart of Visalia, Calif, to protect them.

Today, they are one of the rarest tree species in the U.S. and are scattered in about 75 groves occupying 39,500 acres, ranging in elevation between 5,000 and 7,000 feet above sea level along a 250-mile stretch of the western Sierra Nevada’s.

In order for these gargantuan trees to make a living – especially during the hot dry summers – they require at least 60 inches of precipitation, which mostly occurs from November to April as accumulated snowfall. It’s not uncommon for a 16-foot snowpack to sit on the ground. Incidentally, it’s this accumulated snowfall that provides California, the eighth mightiest economy on the globe, the most intensive agriculture system on Earth, 38 million residents and millions of tourists each year with 90 percent of the state’s water.

So just how big do these giant trees get? If Tyrannosaurus-Rex sauntered from behind a giant Sequoia even it too would be dwarfed.

These rich-cinnamon barked beauties can easily attain 280 feet in height with 29 feet diameters. One giant Sequoia may contain more wood than an entire old growth eastern hardwood forest can grow in two acres.

Even the name Sequoia is steeped with history. Sequoyah was a brilliant Cherokee Native American who developed a written version of his people’s language. Its present botanical name Sequoiadendron giganteum translates to “the giant Sequoia tree.”

In addition to possessing an astounding trunk at its base this species exhibits very little taper as it grows towards the heavens. For instance, many old trees retain their first branches at 120 feet above the ground – diameters of trunks this high off the ground easily exceed 16 feet. And, Sequoias can live for at least 3,200 years meaning they would witness more than 1.1 million sunrises.

All the ancient trees have been named. General Sherman lives in Sequoia National Park and he’s awesome; the undisputed heavyweight champion of the tree world.

General Sherman is the largest single-stemmed tree on Earth: At 274.9 feet tall; circumference at the ground is 102.9 feet; diameter at the base is 36.4 feet; 110 feet above the ground his diameter is an astonishing 17.4 feet. His first branch occurs 129.9 feet off the ground or the equivalent of a 12-story building and it’s 7.2 feet thick rising another 127.9 feet into the sky.

His roots occupy 91,500 cubic feet of soil and his trunk hold over 138,000 gallons of soil water.

General Sherman is about 2,400 years old yet he’s the fastest growing tree on the globe adding the equivalent radial wood of a tree 1.5 feet thick and 62 feet tall each year!

The ecology of giant Sequoias is fascinating. They have evolved with fire, 2.5-feet thick bark, loaded with tannic acid – the same chemical used in fire extinguishers worldwide helps protect mature trees from surface fires. The fire exposes the mineral soil for falling seeds to germinate.

Douglas squirrels can cut up to 10,000 cones in a season, eating the fleshy cone scales and releasing two million seeds. Long-horned beetles also bore into the cones helping to dry them and allowing seed dispersal.

Remarkably, one giant Sequoia can support over 150 species of insects – a self sustaining community where aphids feed on foliage and in turn green lacewings eat aphids; robber flies consume lacewings; flycatchers dine on robber flies; and hawks feast on flycatchers.

No other of the more than 80,000 kinds of trees on Earth can be repeatedly struck by 100,000,000 volts of electricity – or a bolt of lightning – and live for another millennia or two, except Sequoia.

Eventually, giant Sequoias loose their feet as soil erodes, with gigantic springtime snow-loads in their crowns, high winds and soggy soils they tumble to their demise.

I encourage everyone – at least once in their lives – to take your family and make the pilgrimage to visit these noble trees.

Laut melingkupi 70 persen permukaan bumi.

European countries have acted as good indicators in the past as for what could be coming down the pipe here in American in the near future. The climate conundrum has been known to open up very strange things in the name of protecting the environment or “going green” Some people in the British legislature feel that giving everyone a Carbon-Allowance would effectively cap carbon emissions in the country.

Here’s how it would work:

Every time you purchase something that has a certain degree of carbon in it, it deducts a set amount of credit from your arbitrary carbon sum you’d have in the account. The account would work similar to the way a normal bank account works and you would get regular balance statements send to you in the mail to help you keep track of how many carbon credits you have left. Once you run out, you are blocked from buying gas, transportation tickets, etc. until you buy additional carbon credit. As you can tell people can buy more Carbon Dioxide rights by paying the government – tax revenue that they absolutely love.

Britain itself has announced an ambitious Carbon Dioxide emission goal to cap 1990 level emissions by 80 percent. It is economic suicide. The impact it will have on the environment will be negligible resulting in a severe net loss for the economy and the people of the country. People don’t even realize that Carbon Dioxide’s impact on temperature is barely even detectable if it exists at all. The idea that Carbon Dioxide is directly linked to Warming has never been sufficiently proven, yet we are all ready to march in step as a globe under its banner.

None of these proposals actually aim to solve the problem either. These are all roundabout ways to dramatically increase people’s taxes. People who are dependent on traveling a lot will not be able to cut back on their air travel and as a result it will just make it another source of tax revenue to the government. It will cripple businesses, force them to raise prices on retail and subsequently the citizens will lose out big time.

Why should we in the United States be concerned about this?

There has been a growing effort to enforce strict Carbon regulations on a Global level. The organization that would be overlooking this is the United Nations, which is composed of a number of nations that would not mind to see the destruction of the US economy. Hence we can expect a similar if not worse scenario in this country if we are not careful. They are already moving Cap and Trade legislation in the Senate which goes as far as to prevent people from selling their own houses without the government’s approval. In addition the risk of this country’s ratification of the treaty in Copenhagen opens up a whole new world of possibilities including international mandates being imposed on the daily lives of US citizens. People need to wake up to this hoax before it destroys them.

Plants contend with snow and cold winter temperatures with a variety of different strategies. Unlike some animals of the west, they cannot migrate to warmer environs.

Many herbaceous plants do the next best thing to migrating: they shed all of their above ground parts and seek a safe place to spend winter beneath the soil. Aspens, maples, birches, alders and other deciduous trees protect themselves from winter temperatures by dropping their leaves. Native conifers, except for larches, are evergreen and so they have internal functions or physiological adaptations that help them get through the winter months ahead.

The two most common stresses among trees and shrubs of the north country are the ability to withstand low temperatures and drying-up or desiccation.

In order to prepare for winter, leaves of Northern Hemisphere plants begin to recognize the diminishing length of daylight in August. Certain plant hormones are released to slow and then eventually stop all growth. The first frost of the autumn prepares woody plants for the impending onslaught of winter. In addition, plants experience a water stress which further prepares them for the chilly months ahead.

Trees are now able to deal with freezing temperatures and the controlled formation of ice. The exact location of ice within the tree is very important. Most of the cells within trees are non-living, because their role is to conduct water during the growing season and provide mechanical support or stability. There are, however, living cells within the roots, branches, trunk and evergreen needles which are very important for storing food and kick-starting spring growth. It’s these cells where the exact formation of ice is a life or death matter.

The initial formation of ice occurs outside the living plant cell in a small space within the cell wall. All the water that isn’t bonded to other molecules inside the cell is exported to the space in the cell wall. When ice forms in the cell wall it attracts water to its crystals. The living part of the cell is protected by an elastic cell membrane and the remaining cell sap can withstand temperatures as low as minus 67 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 55 degrees Celsius). If, for any reason, the cell membrane becomes ruptured or if too much water is exported into the cell wall the cell sap will become toxic and the cell will die.

Exposed evergreen needles face the greatest water loss problems under bright sunshine and calm winter days. The needles are warmed to above-freezing temperatures and the air is dry, creating atmospheric suction or a call for water from its needles. The tree is faced with a problem: It’s loosing water in its winterized needles and must replace it.

The trunk being darker and warming above freezing like the needles is able to supply minimal amounts of stored water from the cell walls. This becomes a tricky balancing act. On a day such as this, trees prefer even the slightest of breeze, because that cools the leaf surface and prevents any moisture loss and subsequent demand for replacement water.

Heavy snow loads, particularly on the Coastal Pacific Northwest Mountains, can cause entire trees to bend. A 40-foot Pacific silver fir can accumulate a mass of snow and ice nearly 20 inches thick, weighing 6,600 pounds or more than 3 tons.

Exposed areas are subjected to blowing ice which can remove foliage or cause freezing injury and create deep pits eventually wearing away tree bark. Mountain winds, especially during the winter, shape trees and the treeline forests. Some high elevation trees actually resemble a broomstick with windswept branches and trunks with only a mop-head or cluster of foliage at their top.

Browsing activities of mammals create further winter-stress problems for plants.

Yet despite all the harsh winter environmental conditions, our coastal, subalpine, interior and northerly forests of Western North America are hardy and able to live for hundreds and sometimes thousands of years, toughly facing months of winter.

Recently, I had a chance to spend a couple days exploring Arizona’s Sonoran Desert. It’s truly amazing to see how all the different animals use the desert to make a living.

The Sonoran Desert is spread across 106,000 square miles with about 40 percent of it in the U.S. and 60 percent in Mexico. It ranges in elevation from near sea level to over 3,300 feet along the eastern edge of Arizona. In Arizona it receives both winter and summer precipitation with an annual average of about 13 inches.

It is the most biologically diverse of the four big North American deserts. In fact, there are more than 1,000 species of solitary and social bees in the Sonoran Desert – more than anywhere else on the globe.

Being trained as a tree root physiologist I’m always curious about what’s making a living on the ground. Digger bee holes are very evident with a quarter of an inch hooked-top chimneys dotting the earth. The hooked chimneys are believed to thwart the attempts of parasitic hoverflies, who are known to flip eggs into bee holes – their eggs attach themselves to the bee eggs, once hatched they devour bee eggs.

Digger bees are solitary and the female will lay one egg with a packet of honey and pollen in up to 18 cells in one below ground nest consisting of 7 feet of tunnels.

Nearby the digger bee holes, I noticed a circular hole about an inch and a half wide covered with silk; just outside the hole were some loose barbed, dark hairs – indicating a tarantula burrow.

Tarantulas are one of the most recognized residents of the southwest desert. These nocturnal hunters often wait at their entrance holes for beetles and grasshoppers that pass by. Upon entering their hole after a night of hunting they weave silk at the den entrance. The silk has at least two purposes: It keeps the burrow dry by holding humidity and it carries vibrations down to the spider allowing it to know what’s occurring above the ground.

Tarantulas defend themselves from foxes, coyotes, raccoons and skunks by rubbing their legs against the abdomen to loosen their barbed hairs, which are designed to severely irritate the eyes or nasal cavities of predators.

White-nosed coatis, a much larger relative of the mink and closely related to raccoons, are known to grab tarantulas, roll them vigorously on the ground, dislodge their barbed hairs and then feast upon them.

In a sparse clump of grass about a miles away from the tarantula den I spotted a hole in the ground about an inch and a quarter wide, sitting nearby I waited for its occupant to surface. Soon a fierce little predator – a grasshopper mouse appeared. These diminutive yet tough critters hunt lizards, grasshoppers, beetles, scorpions and even other mice.

Grasshopper mice cooperate by raising their young and teaching them to hunt. Young mice learn how to bite the stingers off scorpions before eating them; and how to disable stink beetles – inch-long bugs that defend themselves by performing a headstand and spraying a fetid smell from their posterior.

One of the more eerie desert sounds at night is the high-pitched howl of grasshopper mice. If cornered by a predator this miniature beast will drop a runny, very smell bowel movement in a last ditch attempt to escape – an uncommon trait for a mouse.

One of the most fascinating and easily my favorite animals of the Sonoran Desert are the Couch’s Spadefoot toads. They are the largest native toads in the U.S. measuring a whopping 7 inches in length.

These incredible animals sleep for almost one year in the earth. The vibrations of the first summer thunderstorm awaken them and they burrow their way to the surface where then congregate in temporary rain pools and puddles in desert washes, irrigation canals or ponds.

Because water is so scarce in the desert they breed immediately and females lay eggs within 24 hours. Tadpoles must race to become toadlets before the ephemeral pools dry-up – from egg to toadlet in less than 14 days.

Adult Spadefoot’s are insectivores with termites being their preferred prey. An adult requires just two meals on termites, then with their hard keratinous spade-like pad on their hind legs they bury themselves in the ground. This exceptional desert dweller can live for over 10 years.

Burrowing owls are the only owl or raptor (bird of prey) to den and nest in underground digs. Excellent eyesight helps them spot predators. They prey on rodents, beetles, moths, scorpions, grasshoppers, prairie dog pups, toads, young snakes and other reptiles.

Snakes, badgers and coyotes preyed upon burrowing owls. Mature burrowing owls have developed an intriguing defense mechanism – they imitate the sound of a rattlesnake, which often frightens predators away.

Arizona’s Gila monster is one of the most unusual reptiles in the world and one of only two venomous lizards (the other is the Mexican beaded lizard) known on the globe.

Gila monsters spend 90 percent of their lives in natural crevices under boulders or rocks.

This beauty of a beast can eat 35 percent of its body weight in one meal and store excess as fat in its tail. You can’t miss its bright black and pink coloring and beaded skin.

These shy animals release their venom by biting down on the victim with needle-sharp teeth hidden by the gums when not in use.

Gila monster venom may very well become the next blockbuster drug; currently it’s being studied by pharmaceuticals for treatment of high blood pressure that afflicts over 73 million Americans.

The first milk or colostrum produced by a mammal for its offspring is crucial for its survival. Moreover, cow or bovine colostrum offers a potent remedy to millions afflicted with diseases and cancers.

Mammals evolved to breastfeed their young. Breastfeeding for humans is natural and critical to ensure essential nutrients, antibodies and immune system enhancers necessary for a healthy life.

Children who are breastfed have higher IQs and less neurological dysfunctions compared to children who are not breast-fed.

Infants who are breastfed are one-fifth to one-third less likely to die of sudden infant death syndrome.

And the more breast milk an infant receives during the first six months of their life, the less likely they will suffer from the two most common and troublesome childhood disorders: diarrhea and/or ear infections.

Mother’s who breastfeed have significantly lower rates of developing breast-, ovarian-, and endometrial-cancers and osteoporosis.

During the first 24 to 36 hours of a child’s life colostrum triggers at least 50 developmental processes including strengthening immune factors, which are substances that help the body fight-off the invasion of bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and other disease causing organisms’.

Colostrum also stimulates growth factors, which are compounds that promote healing by building, maintaining and repairing bone, muscle, nerves and cartilage. It also stimulates fat metabolism, regulates protein metabolism during fasting, maintains balanced blood sugar levels, controls brain chemicals responsible for moods and promotes healing. Growth factors are also important in the anti-aging process including reducing wrinkles and keeping skin younger-looking.

Colostrum, a thick, yellow substance is produced at the end of the female’s pregnancy and is passed by her mammary glands during the first 24 to 48 hours after giving birth. Humans produce small amounts of colostrum; a cow, on the other hand, produces about 34 litres during the first 36 hours after birthing.

Humans can safely consume bovine colostrum. The molecular structure of both the immune and growth factors in bovine colostrum is very similar to human colostrum.

In fact, for thousands of years Ayurvedic physicians in India have prescribed bovine colostrum for both physical and spiritual healing.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta about 50 per cent of the antibiotics prescribed in the U.S. for outpatients are unnecessary. As a result there are a growing number of drug-resistant bacteria that pharmaceutical drugs cannot treat.

Adults, children and infants can all benefit from bovine colostrum. It significantly enhances the human immune system therefore reducing the need for incorrectly prescribed antibiotics.

Colostrum contains powerful anti-oxidants that protect the human body from damage against free radicals. Free radicals are highly charged and unbalanced molecules that pair-up with other harmful molecules, damage DNA, create more free radicals and promote cancers, aging, heart disease and more than 60 other medical conditions.

Colostrum stimulates antibodies produced by the body in the intestinal tract at a site called Peyer’s patches and these prevent diseases on the mucosal membranes and in the circulatory system. In addition, colostrum promotes antibodies in the lungs.

Colostrum offers hope and relief for people suffering from autoimmune diseases like: alopecia areata, chronic fatigue syndrome, Crohn’s disease, diabetes, fibromyalgia, hives, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, polymyalgia, rheumatica, Raynaud’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, Sjogren’s syndrome, ulcerative colitis and vasculitis.

Bovine colostrum has 10 to 20 times more immunoglobulin or antibodies compared to human colostrum. Human infants receive about half of their immunity from their mother through the placenta. Calves receive all of their initial immunity from colostrum, which explains why bovine colostrum is rich with immune factors.

Colostrum is also very high in lactoferrin an antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory protein, which defends the human body against candidiasis or yeast infections, cancers, herpes and other infections.

Colostrum contains cytokines which are chemicals involved in celluar communication, antiviral and anti-tumor activity. Cytokines are made up of substances called interleukins, which are extremely effective as an anti-inflammatory used to treat arthritis, other inflammatory disorders and some forms of cancers.

Colostrum also helps HIV/AIDS and cancer patients combat chronic diarrhea by healing their intestinal mucosa.

High-grade colostrum from free-range, non-pesticide, organic USDA (www.harvesthomeorganics.com) or New Zealand certified sources contains very small amounts of lactose, enabling lactose intolerant people the option of using this treatment.

Colostrum and wild oregano from Greece are two excellent examples of potent medicines used thousands of years ago. How many other ancient medicines are there awaiting rediscovery?
