Last week i created a series of product on zazzle based on my photo, Early Morning Sun Rays #19. The early morning sun beams its rays from the azure winter sky through the leafless maples to the cedars and forest below. The sky is a pristine light blue with a hint of thin white clouds in the background. Darkened outlines of bare branches in the foreground and cedar trees in the background provide stark contrast with the early morning sun. As the rays travel from the sun through the forest, several large sunspots a of lighter and darker red radiate from the sun. One small green sunspot floats like a small orb in the midst of the trees.

Time crunch again tonight. I only managed to make three new greeting cards for Art Every Day Month. I’ll take them with me to the holiday craft fair I have coming up in December. I haven’t worked on my “Lady-In-Waiting” painting because I feel that I need more time to spend on it than a few minutes. Either that or I’m scared that I’ll screw it up so I’m avoiding it again. Hope not. No, no.  It’s the time crunch. I’m pretty sure.

Our Lehndorff Design web-site has been located at Lehndorff.info for several years. Lehndorff.com was being used by a developer in Canada and Texas. but when it did become available we grabbed it. We will keep the old address, at least for now.

While we were adding some new work we decided to spruce it up a bit. We were trying to make it look like a collection of snapshots and travel postcards. The index page at Lehndorff.com is similar to a postcard we designed called Greetings from Hampden. It shows a large boulder on Bennett Road in Hampden that has been painted to look like a hound. Marty thinks it is a basset. The new work page looks like an old booklet of snapshots of the Lehndorff family from the 50s. As the mouse rolls over the numerals the images of the work swap. The contact page looks like the back of the postcard. But without the crickets.

Last week I created a series of new product on zazzle using another photo from one of my hikes in the snow last winter. In this photo the pale blue winter sky is visible through the forest canopy, as the sun’s rays stream through the evergreens. Glistening drops of melting snow fall through the air toward the ferny forest floor covered in a light dusting of snow.

At the 46th Annual ASUNM Arts and Crafts Fair

I’ve just come off of three days at the ASUNM Arts & Crafts Fair.  I had a great time, even if I am exhausted.  This was my second year at the fair which has been held at the University of New Mexico for the past 46 years.  My work is high-priced for a fair of this sort, but I like exhibiting here, because the folks who come through really appreciate the work.  I especially enjoy talking with the photography students who are always interested in learning about new techniques.

Preparing for the show gave me a chance to select and prepare new images that will end up in my online shop – that’s work for the coming week(s).  And being at the show told me something about what people liked.  The interesting thing about that last point, though, is that people like things for all sorts of unpredictable reasons.  (I suppose I should have expected that.)  I only print images that have a special quality about them and a special meaning for me.  I cannot assume that others will see them in the same way.  For instance, one person was very moved by an image (at right), because it reminded them of a person dear to them.  I could not have known that, but it made me very happy to hear it.

Several people felt I should have this work in galleries.  That sounds good, and I have had my work in a gallery, but I have reservations about this approach, because galleries want to sell my work at double or triple the price that I ask – and keep the difference, of course.  They do provide a certain exposure to well-heeled clients, but for now, at least, I prefer selling directly at a fair price without the gallery markup.  Of course, if anyone wants to pay me twice as much or more, I’ll consider it.

Before I sign off, I want to thank everyone who visited my booth at the Fair.  Also, a special thanks to my booth neighbors: Allison, the gifted herbal wildcrafter (look it up), Rachel, whose wonderful beaded ear rings should soon appear on Etsy (right?), and Dave the potter who graciously took the photo of me above.  Like me, they put their hearts into their work, and I wish them the best in pursuing their craft.

What a gorgeous sketch ! It is such a simple yet a sketch with endless possibilities .. Here’s just one take of mine …

This illustration snippit was from an unfinished Thanksgiving holiday greeting card. The deadline for the finished product passed, so the design was dropped. Originally, the ‘negative’ shapes would have been locked out of the holiday celebration.

I think we all can relate.

Nothing can describe how thankful I am for all the Lord has done for me in the past five years.  All that I have gone through – unemployment, not being able to secure a full-time job, and going from working temp jobs that only lasted two months at the most – pales in comparison to the blessings that I have received.  I am a new person, not only in Christ, but also in the way that I look at life and the vision that I now have for my practice.  I believe trials serve to bring out the hidden talents and gifts one takes for granted or don’t believe one has.   In my case, I started tapping into different talents to get by.  I took my love for Desktop Publishing to another level by creating work for family and friends – invitations, flyers, brochures, and so forth.  Then I started creating handcrafted greeting cards, looking for something that was uniquely mine.   All of these have helped me overcome some difficult financial moments and for that I am thankful.
