This week the folks at Blue Metropolis announced the launch of their thoroughly revamped website, one that shows every sign of providing a highly worthwhile ongoing online literary resource. The more literary blogs the merrier, I always say, so I’ll be checking out Gregory McCormick’s Azure Scratchings, as well as Quebec Roots and the French-language Le pouvoir des mots, a resource “encouraging teens to use the power of words to get through challenging times.” Youth and writing is indeed a thread in the new website: there’s also Biting Stories, a vampire-themed writing contest for students. Vampires and zombies, in case you haven’t noticed, are very big these days, and not just with young readers; the source of this phenomenon is a subject I will leave to greater minds than mine. Also in French is Capitaine Gaia, an environmentally-themed project aimed at 6- to 12-year-olds wherein participants are asked to submit “a short text and/or illustration featuring their superhero alter ego leading the way in environmental community action.” I wish there’d been something like this when I was 6 to 12. I had no superhero alter ego, as far as I can recall, but I probably could have come up with one. For further details on this project and the site in general, again go to the first link above. This year’s Blue Metropolis Festival happens April 18 to 23 at the new site of OPUS Hotel Montreal; tickets go on sale March 20.
