NEWTON (CBS) – Five Newton police officers have been punished for egging the home of a superior officer last month.

Framingham police responded to a report of teenagers throwing eggs at a house on Griffin Road December 11. The homeowner is a Newton police sergeant.

Police stopped a car with two off-duty Newton police officers inside, who admitted they egged the house saying it was only a prank.

A third off-duty officer actually flagged down a Framingham police officer a short time later near the scene. According to the police report, the officer, who appeared intoxicated, said he had been with the other two officers. He was given a ride home.

A follow-up investigation showed a total of five officers were involved.

None of the officers have been identified and no charges were filed. After speaking with the sergeant whose house was egged, Framingham police said they would allow Newton police to handle the matter internally.

Newton’s interim police chief Howard Mintz would not say how the officers were disciplined.

“Any conduct or actions which are deemed to be unbecoming of any of our personnel even if its deemed to be a prank will not be tolerated by the chief and department,” Mintz said in a statement to WBZ-TV.

The eggs stained the home. The officers involved apologized and power washed their sergeant’s house. Neighbors say they can’t believe it.

“It seems pretty juvenile for police officers to be doing that,” Framingham resident Pat Buchman said.

“The overwhelming evidence was that it was a prank gone awry,” Chief Mintz said. “I don’t think he knew whether it was teenagers or his house was getting broken into. But he was troubled by it and was very disturbed when he found out the results.”

Broward County Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest and an additional reward of up to $1,000 is being offered by an anonymous donor.

According to police, the former racehorse was stolen from a barn in Southwest Ranches between Aug. 17 and Aug. 18.

The horse, named Marco, was later found slaughtered in the 5100 block of SW 210th Terrace in Southwest Ranches.

Marco’s owner said the thieves removed some wooden planks that enclosed his pen, led Marco along a dirt path behind their property then killed the horse and butchered him for his meat.

‪Investigators with the Broward Sheriff’s Office say they’ve never seen a crime like this in Southwest Ranches — which is known for stables and wide open fields.

BSO says the horse named Marco was stolen from his unlocked pen sometime Friday night or Saturday morning.

The horse’s owners say the thieves removed some wooden planks that enclosed the pen, led Marco along a dirt path behind their property then killed the horse and butchered him for his meat.

“It’s like losing a family member,” said David Parga, whose family owns Marco. “This wasn’t livestock and the person that took this animal clearly knew that people cared for him. It’s inhuman to me.”

Parga and his family took in Marco several years ago as a rescue and the horse shared a pen with another horse, Sophie.

David Parga said his father always wanted a horse and is devastated by Marco’s killing.

“To have horses was a dream come true for him,” Parga told CBS4′s Carey Codd. “He’s just in pieces over it.”

The Broward Sheriff’s Office says this is a case unlike any they’ve seen.

“It’s not only rare,” BSO Spokesperson Jim Leljedal. “It doesn’t happen. We have never had this happen in Southwest Ranches before. We’re determined to make this is the only case in Southwest Ranches history.”

But Richard Couto with ARM — Animal Recovery Mission — has seen it elsewhere in Florida. Couto says the slaughter of horses for their meat has been going on for decades in the state.

Couto says there are some cultures that believe eating horse meat, and particularly thoroughbred meat, can make you stronger and cure diseases.

“It actually causes cancer,” Couto explained. “It causes birth defects in women if consumed by pregnant women. It’s a dangerous product. It’s a sick mentality and it’s something that needs to stop.”

Marco’s owners can barely comprehend such a painful attack on their beloved pet. They want the people who did this caught and punished.

“I’m angry,” said Parga. “But most of all I want them to know that there are many people crying, staying up all night, crying and hurting because of what they did.”

Couto said there was an attack like this in Miramar a few years back where 2 horses were slaughtered.

In Miami-Dade in 2011, more than a dozen horses were slaughtered. Couto said there is a market for horse meat and it can bring in anywhere from $7 to $40 a pound.

According to the Sun Sentinel, the speed limit on I-95 in Broward will be reduced from 65 mph to 55 mph, starting Tuesday, April 17th.

The lower speed limit will be in place from the Broward/Miami-Dade county line to north of Griffin Road due to construction projects including construction of the I-95 express lanes between the Golden Glades interchange and Broward Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.

The lower speed limit is expected to be in place until late 2014.

The $106 million project includes completion of two express lanes in each direction and an improved interchange at Ives Dairy Road.

The speed limit on I-95 in Miami-Dade already is 55 mph.

According to police, one officer opened fire on another officer and fled the scene.

Police caught up with the officer at Griffin Road and Perimeter Road in Davie.

There were no injuries.

The department is launching an investigation.

Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise said all southbound lanes of the turnpike will be closed from Griffin Road to Hollywood Boulevard for construction. The closure will begin at 11 p.m. and the lanes should be re-open by 5 a.m. The best alternate road would be State Road 7, east of the turnpike.

The closures are part of a $1 million project to install signs which will display real-time traffic information to drivers. The project, which calls for ten signs on the highway in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, is expected to be completed next year.

The teen had walked to a convenience store on the 3400 block of Griffin Road to buy candy around 10 p.m. on June 14^th.

As she was walking home through an open field, a man snuck up from behind and pulled her towards a tree while trying to remove her pants.

The girl kicked the suspect and was able to escape without harm. She told her parents as soon as she got home and they reported the attack to the BSO.

The suspect was described as a black male, dressed in all black and wearing a ski mask of the same color. He was about 5’11’’ and stocky.

“He’s a hero to me,” said Darin’s father, Darin Baldwin, Sr. “He’s my son, but he’s my hero.”

Darin was riding in a Ford Explorer on U.S. 27 just south of Griffin Road Monday when the driver lost control and the car ended up in a canal.

The driver, identified as 40-year old Walter Horn Jr., and Charlotte Davis, 42, were able to escape from the sinking SUV and swam to shore. Darin Baldwin, 17, and his cousin Walter Horn III, 15, were also able to escape but swam back to help Horn’s cousin, 12-year old Henry, who was struggling to escape the vehicle

“The tire blew out on the truck, the truck went in the water,” Darin, Sr. said. “My brother got his wife out, he got his cousin out, his other cousin was still in the water. He dove back in the water to get his cousin out.”

Henry eventually made it to the bank of the canal thanks to Darin’s help. But no one could find Darin for the next 10 minutes, until it was too late. The family was taken to the Cleveland Clinic in Weston where Baldwin died around 8 p.m.

“Unfortunately, when he dove back in the water, we don’t know if he got trapped under the vehicle, but he gave his life trying to save his first cousin’s life,” Darin, Sr. said. “That’s the ultimate sacrifice. What more can a man give then that.”

But Darin’s family said the selfless act to save his cousin was the kind of person Darin was in life. CBS4’s Ted Scouten asked Darin’s cousin Daniel Ferguson if he wished Darin would have just stayed on the bank and Ferguson said it didn’t matter.

“No, he wouldn’t of, even if you tried to hold him on the bank, it wasn’t him,” Ferguson said. “He went in to save his family and lost his life.”

The Broward Sheriff’s Office has not determined what the exact cause of the crash was on Monday evening, despite the family saying it was due to a blown tire.

The accident happened around 1 a.m. when a car slammed into a tree near Griffin Road and SW 40th Avenue. The force of the crash wrapped the car around the tree as parts of the vehicle exploded in all directions.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office said a 20-year old Berly Hyppolite and 19-year old Judith Jacques were killed on impact. The third person in the car, 20-year old Wilky Pierre-Rene, was able to crawl out of the wreckage. He was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital, he’s expected to survive.

Pierre-Rene’s mother showed up at the crash scene and broke down into tears. She left soon afterward for the hospital to see her son.

Sheriff’s investigators say Hyppolite’s Nissan was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control. The vehicle spun counter clockwise, jumped the center median and slammed into the tree. The impact was on the passenger’s side of the vehicle and was so severe that the car was split in two.

Sheriff’s investigators have not said if alcohol may have played a role in the crash.

BSO Spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said a BSO squad car struck a SUV as both vehicles drove north on State Road 7. BSO claims the SUV made an illegal turn onto Griffin Road from the middle lane, cutting off the deputy.

There were three passengers in the SUV, two women and one man. Both women were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital, but the deputy was unhurt, according to Coleman-Wright.

Carol Maddi, 24, of Dania Beach was trying to cross north to south in the 3200 block of Griffin Road Thursday when she was hit by a west-bound pickup truck driven by 55-year-old Merle Dalonzo, also of Dania Beach.

Maddi died at the scene, according to Broward Sheriff’s Office spokesman Mike Jackles.

Dalonzo stopped after he hit Maddi and cooperated with the investigation.

It has been determined that Maddi was not crossing the street at a designated crosswalk and that speed was not a factor in the accident.

Two weeks ago, on Dec. 8, Sophia Lupi also was struck and killed while crossing Griffin Road in almost the same place. Lupi was riding a bicycle when she was hit by a van driven by Henry Nicholson, 47, of Hollywood.

Both fatalities are being investigated by BSO traffic homicide detectives.
