Do you ever want to believe something; I mean really, truly want to believe, even though you know it can’t possibly be true? Maybe you just want to believe because everyone else does. Or have you ever decided that you didn’t like someone because of how they look? These story concepts are as old as time, and there are many lessons to be learned from them.

You may have recognized the themes above as the, The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Ugly Duckling. These classic titles, and more, are published by Picture Window Books in their fairytale series. Teachers will love these books because they are specially designed for early readers. The varying degrees of difficulty, allows children to choose books that are just right for them.

Since many of the stories such as, The Three Billy Goat’s Gruff, The Three Little Pigs, and The Three Bears are familiar to children, they are easier to read because children can predict what is coming next in the story. For example, when the wolf threatens to blow down the pig’s house, most children quickly repeat the wolf’s refrain, “I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house in.” These predictable parts of the story make it easy for children to decode the text. Teachers love this early reading success; so do parents. And of course, the children revel in the fact that they are readers. These books are very “kiddle” friendly from their texts to their perky illustrations.

“He’s the emperor,” said Zach, “He’s supposed to care about the people.”

“Lucy sighed. “Well, he cared about clothes more than he cared about people.”

“At the end the emperor’s going to say, ‘Look at all this fine clothing these people are making. Isn’t this fabulous?’ Then the people aren’t going to see anything,” said Zach.

“If I were the emperor,’ said Miguel, “I would feel like a fool.”

“The moral of the story is if you don’t think it,” said Pritka, “Don’t fake it!”

“ . . . and don’t give your money away, unless you see what you are getting,” said Juan with a laugh.

Jack and the Beanstalk

“The man said, ‘Give me the cow and I can give you the magic beans,’ said Miguel.

“There are no such things as magic beans,” said Juan, “And whoever heard of golden eggs?

“Juan, it’s an adventurous book,” said Pritka, “It gives strength to a child for being adventurous. I would recommend this book because it takes you to a new world. It’s like you are really in the story.

Ugly Duckling

“I would be very sad if I were the ugly duckling,” said Hannah. “His brothers and sisters kicked him out. That was a mean thing.”

“The ugly duckling was sad,” said Meg, “They were making fun of him.”

“But, the Ugly Duckling was really brave, too. He used a lot of courage . . . walking around the world when he was just a baby,” said Miguel.

“Yeah, I agree with Miguel. He was very courageous!” said Juan, “But I wouldn’t walk around the world just to try to fit in.”

Felino said. “I want to recommend this book. You can learn that you don’t have to be ugly or handsome or pretty . . . just be yourself.”

Miguel nodded.

“AND,” continued Felino, “I liked the part where the duckling turned into the swan.”

“Yeah,” said Miguel, “Then he was the beautiful one. He felt proud of himself.”

Three Billy Goat’s Gruff

“This book reminds me of The Three Little Pigs because they showed brother ‘supportedness,’” said Pritka. “The three pigs had three brothers and this story has three brothers . . . and they were supporting each other.”

“Yeah!” said Miguel. “The little-sized or the middle-sized goat couldn’t beat the troll. Only the biggest-sized could do it.”

“So he stood up to the troll and he tricked him,” said Keisha.

“The moral of the story is don’t give up – never give up. Encourage . . . and do your best,” said Pritka.

The Princess and the Pea

“The prince shouldn’t have gone all around the world just to find a princess,” said Keisha. “If I were the prince, I would look in other castles, but not in ALL the castles in the world. That’s crazy! Actually, it is a very good book . . .kind of crazy, but it is good. It teaches lessons. It teaches you to never go around the world to find a princess.”

Little Red Ridinghood

“I think the book was really great because it was like an adventure,” said Miguel.

“Little Red Ridinghood went to her grandmother’s house,” said Keisha.

“Then she saw a wolf,” said Miguel, “And she talked to the wolf.”

“ I think the wolf was after her,” said Keisha.

Yeah!” said Meg, “She was scared that the wolf was going to eat her.”

“Then Little Red Ridinghood thought the wolf ate her grandmother,” said Juan.

“I would recommend this book because it tells you a lesson,” said Miguel. “Never Talk to Strangers.”

Thumbelina

“The frog said, ‘Come with me. You’ll be a good wife for my son,’ But Thumbelina didn’t want to be the frog’s son’s wife. She was a human being . . . and the son was not a person,” said Lucy.

“Thumbelina must have felt sad,” said Juan.

“Thumbelina was suffering very much,” said Pritka. “If I were Thumbelina, I would be brave and stand up for myself and say, ‘I would not like to marry you.’”

“I would recommend this book because I learned that sometimes people might ask you to do something that you do not want to do, and because Thumbelina was saying ‘NO’ to things that she didn’t want,” said Meg.

ABOUT the ILLUSTRATIONS:

The illustrations really stand out,” said Keisha. “In my brain, I picture that they are really real, even though they are fairytales.”

TEACHER TALK

Way-Way Off — BROADWAY!

You may as well get some mileage from these famous fairy tales. Children love to act in plays. They love to dress up in costumes and strut on stage . . . well most of them do. Fairy tales are easy to perform. Because the stories are familiar to children and because many of the stories are repetitive, they easily lend themselves to playacting. After reading the story to the children, let them reenact it using their own dialogue. They’ll be “huffing and puffing” all over the place. I hope they don’t blow your classroom in!

Did SO! Did NOT!

Now we all know that for every story there is a converse version. Listen to this dialogue.

“Mommmmmy! Harry hit me,” said Marge.

“Did NOT!” said Harry.

“DID SO!” said Marge.

Sound familiar?

Think now about fairy tales. Who do you believe . . . the Wolf or the Three Little Pigs? The wolf said he just wanted to borrow a cup of sugar for his dear old granny, and we all know how the pigs interpreted his visit. Then there was the troll who was just being friendly, as his mother had taught him. With stew bubbling on the stove and warm cornbread in the oven, the troll wanted company for dinner. Who wouldn’t? I wonder why the billy goats misunderstood so badly? All the troll said was, “I’d like to have you for dinner.”

Children will have a blast deciding who was right, and I can guarantee you will NEVER get everyone to agree on which character was telling the truth. But isn’t that the marvel of the mind?

COMPARE/CONTRAST

Read several versions of a fairy tale (see alternative versions listed below) and compare and contrast the various details in the stories.

Children then can write their own versions of the story. Use Frank Schaffer Fairy Tale Sequencing Workbook # 675. Children put six fairy tale pictures in sequential order and paste them into a construction paper book. Then, depending on their age and ability, they can either write their own sentence about the picture or dictate a sentence to the teacher. At the end they will have their “own” version of the fairy tale.

The greatest part of this activity is that, because they are the writers of the text, they can easily read their stories. And they love to. They love sharing them with their classmates, and the room will be abuzz with Cinderella and Jack and Bears and Pigs and Thumbelina and a whole lot more. So this is not only a writing activity, but also a reading one.

DO YOU PROMISE to TELL the TRUTH . . .THE WHOLE TRUTH?

After reading the converse version of a fairy tale, (see alternative versions listed below) students can compare the stories. For even more fun, have students set up a mock trial situation.

Assign students a character from a story and have them persuade a jury of their innocence.
For example, the three pigs could be on trial for cooking the wolf or the wolf could be on trial for harassing the pigs. Each character on trial must convince the judge and the jury of their innocence. What a great way to teach persuasive speech!

Once upon a time Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm wrote and compiled many fairy tales for the enjoyment of the masses, and we’re lucky for it.  In this week’s post I want to pay homage to their efforts and  look at children’s literature a bit differently by looking at some of the earliest and longest lasting children’s stories:  fairy tales.

Think about the fairy stories we still read today, they exist in a timeless realm where the impossible is not only probable but expected.  The Brothers Grimm recorded the oral tales and folklore like “Cinderella,” “Hansel and Gretel,” and “Snow White” (my personal favorite) and published the Children’s and Household Tales in 1892.  In these stories witches eat children and hex young women, and fairy god mothers come to life.  Fantasy and archetypal characters keep the tales timeless so that kids are still reading and learning from them today.  Ironically, the Brothers Grimm published the  tales for children but the stories were really tales to teach people of all ages.  It’s common knowledge that some of the more adult content was considered too inappropriate for kids and so the versions that kids read today are vastly different from the originals.  The realm is the same but the content has become very censored so that the stories are infinitely different from their original forms.

Hans Christian Andersen wrote his fairy tales to pay the bills, impress the ladies, and to just deal with different issues in his life, but they aren’t the same ones that we read today.  What these stories still have in common with their past versions are the fantasy, archetypes,  and the existence of a moral at the end.  “The Ugly Duckling” is still encouraging children to wait out the awkward phases of growing up to get to the beauty of maturity.  “The Little Mermaid,” still teaches about cultural norms, but the norms are very different from that which Andersen was promoting originally.  The stories reflect the ideas of an era and their methods are what makes these stories so timeless.

As an anthropology student, I can’t resist looking at how a culture’s literature conveys how it feels about topics and ideas.  Fairy tales are the perfect venue for this.  Initially, fairy stories were told as a means toward social conformity. The stories taught people how to behave as well as right from wrong.  Fairy tales were used as a means to scare people into following societal norms and encourage appropriate social behavior which is why they included violence and other adult content.  The modern versions of fairy tales are still teaching socially acceptable behavior but they’re doing so without violence and are often teaching very different social norms.  What’s funny is that the stories have adapted and altered with changing cultural ideas.  Look at “The Little Mermaid.”  In the original Andersen version the Little Mermaid dies because she failed to listen to her father and broke social norms.  Modern versions have the Little Mermaid not only living, but flourishing for going her own way and being an individual.  This reflects a changing understanding of what we want to teach our children and reflects was is seen as acceptable and valued behavior.  It’s a really cool reflection of a changing collective conscience and our societies ideas on morality.

Fairy stories exist in the timeless realm of faeries and magic, but that realm is changing to fit our needs as a society.  We read fairy tales to put kids to sleep when they used to be gristly tales meant to keep kids in line.  I think it’s a really interesting shift that makes reading fairy tales even better.  We are human.  We adapt our stories as we learn to better adapt to the world around us and the stories we tell our children directly reflect that.  While fairy tales are simple stories with settled morals, they are used to convey ideas about how the world works, and those ideas are shifting which is changing the stories.  It is amazing to see how much our culture and its values have changed by looking at the literature we give our children.  The anthropologist in me is amazed at the way our values have shifted, and the writer in me delights in how children’s literature has changed to show that.   I think that our stories are what make us human and fairy tales change with every generation showing just how timeless these stores are.

I’ve heard people complain about the new Disney adaptations and the different fairy tale options that have arisen, but that doesn’t change that we still read these same stories after almost two hundred years.  The archetypes still apply as well as they did back then.  People have shifted the morals of fairy tales to reflect what we value as a culture today, but we’ve kept the stories the same at their hearts.  Though we think of them as kids stories, even today any age group can enjoy these awesome tales and get something out of them.  Some people like to take the nerd perspective like I do, others like the moral options and lessons, and some people can just identify with the archetypes and enjoy the different journeys of the characters.  They’re great stories that will continue to change and be enjoyable for generations to come.

I actually really like these very short stories, they are great for reading in a lunch break etc.

This one so far is my favourite. Told from Little Red Riding Hood’s POV. Ladle (as her mother calls her) is approaching her 16 birthday where she soon discovers her families secret and her destiny.

I have to be honest and admit that this is the first of the prequels that have really made me want to read the full novels. The previous prequels have been filled with errors and pop culture references that made me cringe, but there as none of that here. Which just left it as a short but enjoyable read.

Mary Mary Quite Contrary by Cameron Jace

Book synopsis.

The Devil’s take on fairy tales, exposing the origins of some of the most important, yet never explained, elements in the fairy world. Darker things the Brothers Grimm didn’t want you to know about. More hints would just spoil the fun. Let’s just say that at some point in the Dreamworld even the devil was about so sell his soul.

My review. 1 of 5 stars

Normally I wouldn’t rate a book that I hadn’t finished but this was a short story, I should have been able to finish it easily. The fact that I couldn’t read it is the reason I have given it a star rating at all.

Short stories are supposed to be easy reads, this one was so disjointed it made it almost impossible to keep up. Characters were mentioned when they had no need to be, a few times it flipped between past and future tense which doesn’t make the reading any easier. It felt like the story had been written, and then edited out of sequence.

Blood Apples by Cameron Jace

Book Synopsis.

In this short diary, Prince Charming tells how Snow White was really killed — or was she? — and how he came to meet Rapunzel’s and Jack the Beanstalk. Is it true that he really knows who wrote the original fairy tales and handed them over to the Brothers Grimm? And more importantly, Prince Charming explains why apples are red.

My review.  2 of 5 stars
This one is a lot like the others, there are several grammatical errors, words added or missing.
I didn’t enjoy this story (although better than the last), and I’m now getting the impression that Jace has decided to try to include as many characters as possible so that he doesn’t have to include much in the way of story.
The whole premise of these novellas IS a good one, but overall they have been poorly written. I am now of the opinion that I may borrow the first full length novel from the library (if they stock it) and see if I like it rather than risk buying the whole series and finding out its more of the same.

This Antique Gold Tornado Spiral Punk Pierced Ear Cuff reminds me a lot of this film I saw last night – Oz the Great & Powerful.

It was a fantastic film, though not nearly as nostalgic for me as Wizard of Oz, which I grew up watching. My mother’s favorite books were the Oz series written by John R. Neill so anything remotely hurricane related sort of takes me back to being a kid again.

This ear cuff is completely unique and aside from reminding me of the magical land of Oz, it’s quite edgy and punk in style and requires a piercing to wear.

Robyn ran into the bathroom, gagging from the repugnant odor. She knew, she had only a few minutes to dress, and face her wicked mother in the kitchen. Robyn joined her mother, just as she was finishing the deadly preparations.

Today, she ordered Robyn to feed grandmother, soon as she arrived, at the small, dilapidated cabin.  She was terrorized of Wolfma and had been warned, she better not utter a word to anyone about their secret. It was eighty-two degrees, bright and sunny. Nonetheless, Robyn shivered with every step she took, along the narrow path, leading to grandmothers cabin.

Robyn knew grandmother would die. Wolfma was planning on feasting on her body. To Robyns astonishment, Wolfma told Robyn she had to partake, in devouring grandmother. It was a curse. The youngest female wolf, would rule the forest. Robyn did not trust Wolfma.

Robyn arrived at grandmothers. Robyn was not going to feed her, or keep the secret any longer. She loved her frail, and ill grandmother. Robyn sat on the small bed, brushed grandmothers brittle hair, and revealed the secret. Grandmother grinned, and in a weak voice, said.. don’t fret my child. You run along home, tell Wolfma I am dead. When she comes for me, I will kill her…..and eat her! Your love empowers me to destroy Wolfma.

The end to the curse is truth and love. I will die, but you will live a happy and normal life.
