‘Cobra’s Anger’ strikes Taliban

More than 1,000 U.S., British, and Afghan troops launched a major offensive in a key battleground of southern Afghanistan yesterday, only days after President Barack Obama unveiled a new strategy to end the war.

NATO said the offensive was designed to crush terrorists around a major town in Helmand in order to allow development to begin and civilians to return, key elements of Mr. Obama’s decision to deploy 30,000 new U.S. troops to Afghanistan.

About 900 U.S. Marines and sailors, British troops and more than 150 Afghan soldiers and police were taking part in Operation Khareh Cobra, or “Cobra’s Anger” in the valley of Now Zad.

Hundreds of Marines were dropped by aircraft into the north of the valley, while a large force of soldiers pushed northward from the town of Now Zad to sandwich the Taliban between the two forces.

“More than 1,000 ISAF personnel partnered with Afghan national security forces began a long-planned operation in northern Helmand province to clear insurgent forces from a key area,” the military said.

For the first time in Afghanistan, U.S. troops used Osprey aircraft — which have features of both a helicopter and a fixed-wing plane– to fly waves of Marines into the valley.

Also for the first time, combat engineers deployed the “Assault Breacher,” a tracked armoured vehicle built on a tank chassis. It was being used to clear a path through improvised minefields.

Major William Pelletier, from Camp Leatherneck in Helmand, told CNN the valley is “a major through-route” for transporting fighters and munitions from east to west and north to south. Terrorists have mined the region, and troops intend to provide enough security for the Afghan government and nongovernmental organizations to begin clearing the mines and roadside bombs so they can repopulate the town.

“So far, four Taliban dead bodies were left behind on the battlefield. But enemy casualties could be higher,” said Daud Ahmadi, a spokesman for the Helmand governor, adding scores of mines and a cache of explosives were seized.

How exciting! A new bar; new friends and even more music!

We now have 3 bars for karaoke and it’s 4 nights a week! You’d think we’d all get sick of each other right? haha.. wrong! Of course, everybody has their moments and I’m definitely not exempt. We always try to have a great time though, no matter what!

So, I’ve been practising an awful lot lately! I’m loving the fact that my friends tell me that I’ve gotten a lot better. Karaoke is not about how good you are! It’s about having fun, of course, but sometimes it just feels good to know someone believes you’ve done a good job! It doesn’t hurt that the sound at this bar totally kicks a** !!

I got to sing a new song last night and was pretty happy with it. ‘Ain’t to Proud to Beg’ by the Temptations. Which is a fantastic song! So much fun to sing. But, I still have my favourites: Sweet Home Alabama, Somebody Like You…. and the new ones: Don’t Speak, Stop (Spice Girls, yes I know, but it’s a lot of fun!) and anything I feel like trying really. It is a brave new world out there

Until next time, keep on rocking!!

It’s time for my list. I will be working on it, because there are still some things(latest Swell Season, Devendra Banhart, Julie Doiron etc.) that I have to hear. Recommendations are very welcome! Also, some albums might have scored higher/lower than I reviewed them, simply because I listen to them so much. I’m gonna try to review them all. Anyway, some of my favourites:

Dan Mangan – Nice, Nice, Very Nice [9.5/10] [review]
I think this is my favourite album from this year. Cute, teddy-bear-ish-looking singer-songwriter from Canada. He makes you feel loved inside. Good, strong and dynamic songs, nice vocals, very good instrumental work, wonderful lyrics. The best indie pop album from this year. It’s unbelievable that he’s just 26(25?) (date-material! haha!). Dan’s a keeper and you should keep your eye on him!

Andrew Bird – Noble Beast/Useless Creatures [9.5/10]

Again, a masterpiece made by Andrew Bird. It’s balanced, beautiful and unique. It’s pop, folk, it’s wonderful. I only miss the electric guitar a bit. Still, great lyrics, interesting, wonderful compositions and vocally pretty strong. Useless Creatures is the best instrumental CD I’ve ever heard, might have even listened more to that one than to Noble Beast. Simply beautiful.

St. Vincent – Actor [9/10] [review]
Annie Clark manages to float above her instrumental chaos. Or at least, it looks like that. Her compositions are actually well made. Vocally, Clark is really strong. It’s a pretty unique CD that you’ll love or you’ll hate. I love it. (read the review I did)

Jesca Hoop – Hunting My Dress [8.8/10]
To me, she’s live even stronger. Hoop mixes various styles and makes them her own. Great guitar work, great vocals. It might sound weird during your first listen, but it will grow. Especially ‘Murder of Birds’ is a wonderful track.

A.A. Bondy – When The Devil’s Loose[review]
I know I didn’t give A.A. Bondy such a high mark in my review. But the album did really grow on me. One of the best folk albums made this year. I listen to it a lot lately, so points for that!

The Avett Brothers – I and Love and You [8/10]
This album is really a ‘grower’, after a while you like it more and more. The Avett Brothers sound really ‘natural’. It might not really be my genre of music, but I love this album. Titletrack ‘I and Love and You’ is a rare song, it’s extremely beautiful. You might have to get used to the(ir) voice(s), but it’s worth it. Overall a very nice album.

The Whitest Boy Alive – Rules[7.5/10]
Simple funky and happy. Don’t expect any musical obscurity from these guys. Erlend Øye got a great voice, some great lyrics and made some great music on this album. Strong bass lines, percussion and light guitar work. But after a while, it get’s a bit repetitive. Still a very nice album, best song to me is ‘1517′.

Laura Gibson – Beasts of Seasons[7.5/10]
Dreamy folk songs. Gibson got a great voice. This album stands out for it’s simplicety. Her songs are pretty vocally driven, with often some light guitar work underneath it. But also you hear some piano notes every now and then. The perfect album for a sunny autumn day.

Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest[7/10]
Pretty interesting album, on moments to difficult for me to understand maybe. There are some ‘killer-tracks’ on it, but overall it’s just a pretty solid, nice, album that isn’t really my cup of tea at moments

Regina Spektor – Far [7/10]
Not as strong as ‘Begin to Hope’, but again a very good album. Spektor goes from weird classical stuff to pop, not being afraid of sounding ’silly’. Vocally strong, but you have to love her voice. No complains about her instrumental stuff, but it’s not really ‘new’. (Best tracks of the album are ‘Laughing With’ and ‘Folding Chair’, these are perfect songs)

Wilco - Wilco(the album) [7/10]
Wilco delivered another good album. Still, it can’t beat Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but it’s a good try. It’s again the typical Wilco sound(that isn’t really my sound). But it’s a strong, balanced album.

Franz Ferdinand – Tonight[6.5/10]
Surprising new album from Franz Ferdinand. They changed their sound a bit, having more electronics in it. It’s still not difficult to dance on. They didn’t lose their Franz sound. Points for that.

Albums that I didn’t like that much, but were pretty great anyway:
Soap&Skin – Lovetune for Vacuum
It’s too dark and obscure for me. It feels pretty creepy. But still, pretty good. (yeah, I don’t know much more to say about this one)

Zee Avi – Zee Avi
Too light and too bubbly for me. Pretty good debut album from this singer-songwriter. She mixes light, bubbly pop with a bit of jazz. Think Jack Johnson if he was a girl and used a ukulele more.

Portugal. The Man – The Satanic Satanist
Good album, but I think it’s too ‘heavy’ for me. Though, I do like the poppy ‘Work All Day’, ‘People Say’ and ‘The Sun’. Recommended for everyone who’s ears can handle more noise than mine.

Great Lake Swimmers – Lost Channels [review]
A more upbeat album from Tony Dekker and company. It does work out, but I like their slow, acoustic stuff more. Still a great album if you like them and do like songs such as ‘Your Rocky Spine’.

M. Ward – Hold Time
For all M. Ward lovers: Hold Time is a typical M. Ward album. His strongest point is his voice, and he uses is good. To me, M. Ward is a bit boring, there’s not much happening in his music. But that’s the only critic I can think of, so I guess it’s a nice album.

Alexi Murdoch – Time Without Consequence
The album kicks of great. I first thought that this would be a great album. But in the end, the songs are too long. Because of that, this album will sound repetive. Bad, it could have been much better.

Powstało łącznie 7 prototypów zbroi Ursus. Ostatni został sprzedany na ebay’u w 2007 roku.

Miss Annie Clark (St. Vincent) has been touring Europe with Grizzly Bear lately(sadly, I missed them). This time, a collaboration with Grizzly Bear’s guitarist Daniel Rossen has been recorded and put up on YouTube, I believe it was recorded in Basel, Swistzerland.

It’s not the first time Annie teams up with a tour mate, think John Vanderslice and Andrew Bird(but it’s not a rare thing for Bird too). The two played a guitar only version of ‘The Party’ from St. Vincent’s latest album ‘Actor’.

The neo-classical precision of Grizzly Bear’s music—the feeling that its choral harmonies, woozy orchestrations, and slippery waltz signatures aren’t just written, but composed—has only grown more pronounced since Yellow House, but somehow that meticulousness never becomes lifelessness. Veckatimest was named after an unpopulated island, but it’s teeming with life, mystery, and surprise—the biggest of which may be its potential for crossover success. As early glimpses of the ethereal, doo-wop-derived earworm “Two Weeks” and the swooning psychedelia of “While You Wait For The Others” hinted, Veckatimest is more song-oriented than its predecessors without sacrificing any experimental tics, making for the band’s most satisfying record yet.

Distressed electric piano, disembodied choirs, and the instantly discernible strings of Nico Muhly color the album’s meditations on distance, as seen in the bitter retreat of the galloping opener “Southern Point” (“You’ll never find me now”) and the hushed, heartbreaking refrain of “All We Ask.” (“I can’t get out of what I’m into with you.”)justmusicarchive.com But for all Veckatimest’s talk of space, its brilliance lies in subtle, interlocking moments such as the backward guitar disrupting the lockstep girl-group groove of “Cheerleader,” the way the watery ballad “Dory” shifts seamlessly from genteel to creepy, or the cinemascope cacophony that ends “I Live With You.” justmusicarchive.com As with Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion (a record it seems likely to vie with for album of the year), Veckatimest offers more than just an inventive exercise in collage: It’s like hearing the past few centuries of music playing in symphony, which sounds—thrillingly and reassuringly—like the future.

Not literally, but at least statistically speaking it is safer to sleep with one of those cuddly animals than our average human being. At least that’s what Lynn Rogers is saying, and he knows a bit about our hairy friends: ” If you look at the statistics, one black bear out of a million kills somebody. With grizzly bears it’s one in 50,000. Among humans it’s one person out of 18,000 kills somebody. So you could see why I would feel a lot less comfortable in the city than in the woods next to a bear.”

Now, the last two places I’ve been living in London (King’s Cross & Camberwell), a man has been killed by another men on my street. I agree that statistically London scores above average on crime, but how many people do you know that have been killed by a bear? Ok, some people get unlucky, but there is always exception to the rule.

We didn’t have the heart to take away our kids mass-produced toys when we decided plastic is bad. However, I have given them some other ones to throw into the mix. I enjoy the hobby. We save some money on toys. My kids get to play with natural materials and more unique items. Whatever your talents are, I strongly suggest making some fun for your kids. It will make you warm inside. Here are some samples.

It’s Slow Life by Grizzly Bear featuring Victoria Legrand (from Beach House), and it’s one of my fave tracks from the Twilight: New Moon Soundtrack, possibly the indiest soundtrack of the year! This live video is from the recent Grizzly Bear + Beach House American tour, and was filmed at The Blue Note in Columbia, Missouri.

I love love love boy/girl duets and the New Moon soundtrack has not one, but two! (more on the other one later). Love this song x

Being in nature; our senses open up fully. We would go crazy if that were to happen in the city. We spend our lives focused on the future and we forget the present. – Being Caribou (paraphrased)

Being Caribou is an inspiring documentary about a Canadian married couple who follow a herd of 120,000 caribou on foot across 1500 km of Arctic tundra. In following the herd’s migration, the couple hopes to raise awareness of the threats to the caribou’s survival. Along the way they brave Arctic weather, icy rivers, hordes of mosquitoes and a very hungry grizzly bear. Dramatic footage and video diaries combine to provide an intimate perspective of an epic expedition.

In September, Beth and I traveled through Alaska. The first part of the trip was in Katmai National Park on the Alaskan Peninsula to photograph the grizzly bears on the Brooks River. We stayed at the Brooks Camp in a cabin practically on the river. Access is by float plane since the Brooks Camp is on a remote lake. We were there for 4 days watching and photographing the grizzly bears as they fished for the sockeye salmon. The bears arrive at this time of the year for the salmon run. Its easy fishing and they have a feast. I took 1600 grizzly photos.

Spin Cycle

The second part started when we flew back to Anchorage where we rented a car and drove to Talkeetna (the model for the hit TV series Northern Exposure) for one nite. The next day we did a flightseeing tour where we flew around Denali Peak (aka McKinley). The weather was perfectly clear. There is only a 30% probability of seeing Denali. We lucked out. We landed on a glacier – very cool.

Denali and Glacier as seen from plane

Then we drove to Denali National Park where we spent 3 nites in a cabin at the entrance. We did the grueling 11 hour round trip bus ride the next day to Wonder Lake – 80 miles on a dirt road. No public cars allowed. The place is highly regulated and controlled. But we did see plenty of wildlife and I got an incredible and lucky shot of a gray wolf as it popped its head above a bush to see what all of the commotion was about.

Grey Wolf in Denali National Park

The next day we drove the 15 miles stretch again and that’s where I got a second most incredible and lucky shot – a lynx and her cub!!! Lynx are solitary and secretive animals. They are an endangered species in Colorado. Before this sighting I had never seen one. This day I saw 3 of them and one with a cub close enough to photograph. Just amazing.

The third part of the trip was to Kaktovic. Beth flew back home from Fairbanks and I met a photo group. I had made reservation for a photo safari to photoshoot Polar Bears. We flew from Fairbanks to Barter Island on the north shore of Alaska, not far from Prudhoe Bay. We stayed in Kaktovic, an Inupiat village of 350 residents on the island. There, we photoshot polar bears for the next 3 days. Weather was poor, except for one day. There was no snow and no ice, temps in the 30’s, 40’s. The bears are landlocked until the ice pack reaches the island which is behind schedule. Then the bears travel out in search of seals. In the mean time they rely partly on the villagers for food. The villagers are allowed to hunt and harpoon (by hand) 3 bowhead whales. They butcher the whale, store the blubber and meat for the winter and dump the carcass on the bonepile at the end of the runway. The bears have a feast. This has been going on for centuries. Interesting relationship

In The Boneyard

That was our trip.

I took over 4000 images. The top 50 are posted to my website www.richardseeleyphotography.com

Grizzly Bear, the band with the best album of the year according to the critics, released a video for their song ‘Ready, Able’. It’s kind of a crazy video, but it’s a bit of a crazy song too. What’s that clay monster doing there, is it an alien? Interesting colours (I really like to paint, so I like it a lot). It reminds somewhat from the claycreatures I made when I was young, after a while all the colours mixed to this ugly brown mess. It leaves you with so much more questions than answers.. hmm.. A sort of surreal Grizzly Bear world. It’s strange, but I like it

Halloween II (2009)
★ / ★★★★

Written and directed by Rob Zombie, “Halloween II” is a complete waste of time. What I really liked with Zombie’s 2007 interpretation of the 1978 classic was that it really tried to tell a story. The 2007 film spent a third of its time explaining Michael Myers’ psychology as a child–something that other “Halloween” movies that came before did not do. With this 2009 sequel, we’re back again on the level of wait-and-kill without any sort of plot to drive the story forward. Basically, Michael Myers (Tyler Mane) wanted to hunt down Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton) a year after they had a showdown in Haddonfield. Meanwhile, Dr. Samuel Loomis (Malcolm McDowell), Michael’s ex-psychiatrist, wrote a book about the killings and tried to wrestle with the media’s barrage of questions and his conscience (or lack thereof). In my opinion, Dr. Loomis’ storyline should totally not have gone in that direction. Instead, we should have followed Dr. Loomis’ mission (or downright obsession) to hunt down Michael and protect Laurie from him. That’s much more interesting (and relevant) than scenes of him signing books and being interviewed on some television shows. As for Michael’s rampage, although I still thought that the stalking and violent scenes were very gruesome, none of it was particularly scary. Well, except for that scene in the hospital which occured during the first twenty minutes (the only effective scene in the whole movie). I also hated the fact that Zombie decided to inject Deborah Myers’ ghost (Sheri Moon Zombie as Michael’s mother) into the storyline. Not only was such a decision poorly executed, the scenes were downright laughable. If I wanted to see a ghost story with a psychological aspect to it, I’d watch “The Others” because that one was actually chilling to the bone (not to mention clever). Slasher fans simply do not pay ten bucks or so to watch a slasher flick with ghosts roaming about and supposedly instigating the broken mind of a killer. I went into this movie with an above average expectations because the 2007 version was very enjoyable. But after watching this movie, I think Zombie should just stop. He doesn’t quite grasp the idea of the brilliance that comes with simplicity and a truly terrifying soundtrack, which defined John Carpenter’s 1978 “Halloween” classic.

Aucun...

Weibliche Namen
Alessia, Alice, Alina, Allegra, Amelie, Anastasia, Andrea, Anna, Beatrice, Camille, Chloe, Clara, Claudia, Darja, Emily, Emma, Eva, Gaia, Ginevra, Hannah, Ilaria, Ines, Jade, Jana, Johanna, Julia, Julie, Lara, Laura, Lea, Lena, Leonie, Lina, Lisa, Lucie, Maeva, Maja, Manon, Marie, Mathilde, Mia, Oceane, Pauline, Rebecca, Sarah, Simone, Sophie, Uljana, Vera, Wasilisa
