I shoulda gotten out of bed when my alarm went off, but I slept for 2 more hours instead.

I woulda gone out to hand out resumes in hopes of landing a part time job, but I slept in.

I coulda done more school work today, and actually gotten ahead of the game, but other things were more interesting.

I guess that’s how it goes sometimes, eh?

I started my sleep in day with something I haven’t had in eons – a smoothie!

frozen raspberries

1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder

1 tbsp peanut butter

1 tbsp cocoa

milk

I also had an Apple Carrot Raisin Oatmeal Muffin with said smoothie delight.

Even though it was cold and rainy, the smoothie was so very enjoyable. Note to self – do not forget about the smoothie!

I ended up plopped on the couch watching skating this afternoon, and worked on some parts of our group paper. I was trying to foster some discussion, but there wasn’t much input from other group members, so I gave up. I’m just hoping they weren’t near their computers, and not just ignoring the fact that we need to get this done.

I eventually thought about having lunch. I was craving an eclectic salad.

romaine lettuce

spinach

cucumber

carrot

hummus/salsa mix

sour cream

dill pickles

tiny bit of leftover roast chicken

spelt sticks (inspiration from Mama Pea and her sesame sticks)

Mom went grocery shopping, and brought back a fresh, doughy load of sourdough bread, so I toasted up a slice and spread on a little butttah.

‘Twas a delightful lunch.

But as delicious as the random salad combo was (dill pickles & spelt sticks on salad are a keeper!), my tummy got angry about half way through, so I ended up tossing the last third or so. I didn’t waste any of that bread though – simple carby goodness is one of the few things I want when I’m feeling ill.

My sister was off to her boyfriend’s, and my parents had a dinner to go to, so I was left alone for the evening (yay!). And what was the first thing I did? Get dressed and head out to the grocery store. LOL. I had good reason though – mom went grocery shopping, and only bought plain orange juice. Now, I don’t know what it is about plain orange juice, but I can’t drink it. Especially if there’s pulp. Blech – if I want to chew something, I’ll eat the fruit, thanks. I was on a Happy Planet juice mission!

I picked up not just my favourite Mango Peach Party, but another flavour I haven’t enjoyed in quite some time – Tropical Tango.

I couldn’t help but to enjoy a glass right when I got home.

I always forget how awesome the Tropical Tango Flavour is. It has coconut in it, so obviously it has to be good. It’s almost like drinking a Pina Colada…sans rum.

And since I was left to my own devices for dinner, I decided to make a pizza only I would enjoy. We even had a small ball of pizza dough in the freezer, and I managed to spread it out on the pan relatively well. I still have troubles with holes forming in my crust, but I patched those all up.

I brushed a little olive oil on the dough, and sprinkled on some Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and parmesan cheese and pre-baked the crust a bit before topping it. Then I added:

spinach

marinated artichokes

onion

rehydrated porcini mushrooms

corn

mozzarella

parmesan

The above is pre-cheese, and below is post-cheese & post-bake.

Whenever I use fresh pizza dough, I can never get it to brown – any tips?!

I served myself a couple of slices.

It was delicious. Especially without the tomato sauce base. We didn’t have any on hand, and I’m not really a tomato sauce person, so the simple olive oil & seasonings were right up my alley. Plus that corn – oh, it get so sweet and delicious on the pizza. If you’ve never had corn on a pizza, I highly recommend you try it out.

I enjoyed my pizza while I watched the hockey game (Canucks win 7 – 3!). It didn’t bother my tummy much, so I grabbed another slice (they were pretty small to begin with).

That’s a hunk of artichoke hanging off there, not cheese

My mom came home later on with leftover dessert from their dinner party – cherry cheesecake. Obviously, I had to taste test a sliver.

It got my seal of approval.

Then, despite the rain, we went and soaked out in the hot tub. It’s been quite awhile since I’d gone in (probably because of all the rain), so it was a nice way to relax from my…completely slack day. HA!

And now, it is again much later than I would like it to be, so I shall bid my adieu and hop into bed. Night!

You don’t have the time or the resources to evaluate every applicant who strolls in. to guide your w

You don’t have the time or the resources to evaluate every applicant who strolls in. to guide your work, you should develop a profile of your “ideal” candidate. You may never find your ideal, but you will establish a basic framework that outlines the person you are looking for.

Developing an ideal candidate profile is similar to viewing a lineup of suspects after you’ve witnessed a bank robbery. The individual you pick out may not be the actual bank robber, but chances are the real criminal is strongly similar. Often, a lineup helps police establish the silhouette or basic framework of the person being sought. The police is clear even if the details are not. Likewise, your ideal candidate profile will give you a sharper idea of what you are really looking for, so that you can increase your odds of finding him or her.

Use the following outline to develop of profile of your ideal candidate:

Must have, or have done, or be able to do:

Experience: type and years

Industry: type, or specific companies, and years

Skills or talents

Education

Should have, or have done, or be able to do:

Experience: type and years

Industry: type, or specific companies, and years

Education

Would be nice to have, or have done, or be able to do:

Experience: type and years

Industry: type, or specific companies, and years

Skills or talents

Education

Be specific when you draft your outline. If you want someone with strong follow-up skills, say so. If you want an assertive person who can handle high stress, say so. To create a good match between job and candidate, you need to define the person as closely as you define the job.

Keep your company culture in mind, too. If your company is team-oriented and flexible, you want a candidate who is comfortable with teamwork—and not everyone is. If your department is highly structured, you want someone who works well in a structured situation. Describe the qualities that your company values so that you can find compatible candidates.

Just remember that defining the candidate is a lot like shopping for groceries: the more you toss into your shopping cart, the more you’ll pay. The cost of filling a job is influenced by two factors: how long it takes to find the candidate, and the supply of qualified candidates. The greater the number of must have items on your list, the longer it’s going to take to find that person. The greater the experience, skills, or education requirements, the smaller the supply of candidates and the larger the compensation package required to hire the person.

In rough economic times reducing your grocery is more than ever. One good way to save is by spending

In rough economic times reducing your grocery is more than ever. One good way to save is by spending time to clip coupon thou beside that there are other ways.. Below are some ideas to lower your grocery costs

Save money with breakfast cereal. Oatmeal at 12 cents per serving is a cheap and nutritious choice. Add sweetener along with raisins or honey and you have a delightful breakfast at a lower cost of processed boxed cereals. This method itself would help you save load on your grocerys.

Save up on juice costs by purchasing juice concentrates.
When you buy boxes of juice you’re actually paying , shipping, and storing of water within the juice. Frozen juice concentrates are a great way to cutting down on expenses. Take the juice concentrate back and adding water yourselfsaving 30% – 50%in the process.

Try a meatless meal once a week. Meat is probably the most pricey sources of proteins in the world. That’s why in most parts of the world meat is a luxury item. In addition, heavy consumption of red meat can lead to atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.

Search the net for free grocery offer. Find such offers need just a little time. Free grocery offers are one of the best tools i have ever found. You may have to participate in some trials for products to get the free grocery card but on the overall it will work out fine.

Stock up on milk.
Save money by stocking up on milk when it goes on sale.Always freeze the extra milk until you are going to use it.

This would prevent you from misspending $7-$9 everyday when you eat your lunch outside. Left-overs make great tasting lunches, helping to stretch your food dollars even more. With reference to the above mentioned tip, you should take part in coupons and free grocery offer to get your lunch for the cost of nothing.

Store brand products have come a long way over the last few years They are now generally as good as or much better than their branded name counterparts and can save you 30% – 40% or more. The key is to of the store brand return policies of supermarket chains. Many outlet will allow you to return the store brand product if you don’t like it. This is a good way to check out a product that probably would save you money week after week, with no risk to you. Simply check with your store staff about their supermarket brand return policy.

My family has for the last several years opted for a heritage turkey — a Bourbon Red Turkey from Caveny Farm to be specific. While we have found these birds to be much more flavorful and interesting than your typical grocery store gobbler, it also means we pay a significant premium. Today’s New York Times has an article discussing why (Heritage Turkeys Selling Briskly, Even at $10 a Pound, Nov 26).

The bottom line is that both nature and scale matter. On the nature side, heritage breeds grow more slowly. They take 28 weeks to reach maturity. A Broad-Breasted White — the breed of choice for most commercial turkey farms — takes only 14 weeks to be ready for market.

Scale kicks in when on realizes that most heritage breeds are raised in small farms.

It is not clear how many heritage birds are sold each year. A conservative estimate, according to some producers, is 20,000 to 30,000 birds. That is a blip compared with the 273 million broad-breasted turkeys produced annually in the United States (46 million of those are eaten on Thanksgiving).

Just getting a poult (i.e., a baby turkey) costs $9 a pop. Small farms then have to pay for slaughtering and preparing the birds for market. In the words of Frank Reese, a breeder who has championed heritage breeds,

“Our turkeys are very expensive, not because of the turkey but because of the processing and shipping,” he said. “The problem is the infrastructure to support truly honest-to-God sustainable agriculture is not there.”

On a recent cold, rainy day, I had the opportunity to get to Frederick, MD, to visit The Common Market, one of a very few co-op markets operating in the area. The Common Market, which has been in existence for more than 30 years, sits as an anchor in a rather commonplace strip mall (Evergreen Square, 5728 Buckeystown Pike). But once you walk through the doors you realize that the inside is much more warm and welcoming than its plain exterior might lead you to believe. As you enter into the produce section, you are bombarded by color and energy emanating from the fruits and vegetables, most of which come from farms within a 150 mile radius (and most under 100 miles).

As you pass by the produce, you’ll find a bulk foods section with everything from flours to nuts to beans to granolas to sugars (and I found hominy!).

The dairy, cheese, seafood, meat, bread, and grocery sections are all stocked with natural, organic and local items, many of which cannot be found in other natural food stores or even larger chains such as Whole Foods. (And more types of yogurt than I’ve ever seen assembled in one place!)

The Common Market also creates and offers prepared foods to eat in its small cafe area or for take out.

One thing we were shocked the most about is the lack of good and cheap grocery stores around NYC. My most expensive cereal I had ever purchased in life was a smaller than normal Raison Bran for $5.79. There are your normal food emporiums everywhere, there are just three around where we live: 86th and 2nd, 82nd and 3rd, and 87th and Madison. For the price you pay, you would think the veggies and plum tomatos would be in top quality. Not so much. Another high end place that does have really good quality everything ranges from fresh seafood to gourmet cheese to crazy deli and olive bar is Eli Market, 80th and 3rd, it is more expensive than food emporium, but you definitely get what you pay for. One additional thing about Food Emporwhicium is that they do free delivery for $75 or over, which we don’t really prefer. We want to be able to pick our own vegetables, herbs and such.

There are two other markets we found, one is on 92nd and 2nd and another one is on 89th and 1st. The one on 92nd and 2nd is a little cheaper and ghetto-fied. After we found 89th and 1st, we no longer go to 92nd and 2nd. 89ths and 1st I believe is a tini-tiny cheaper than food emporium (that does not say much), but still have decent fresh vegetables, deli, and meats and seafood. Most of the meat and seafood are packaged. The market is smaller and does not have a big selection of everything but decent enough that you can get most of everything.

Another recommendation I have is to purchase vegetables and fruits on the stands at various corners, they are actually very cheap and fresh. To name a few, there is one on 89th and Lexington, 88th or 87th and Lexington (in front of the CVS), 86th and 3rd by Banana Republic, and 90th and 3rd in front of the post office. Just to give you a quick example, I got my lemons at 89th and 1st for 2 for $1, while at food emporium, you pay $1 for one lemon, and at the food stands, you get 3 or 4 for $1.

The cheapest and freshest place to buy grocery is really in Chinatown (well at least for Manhattan). YOu do have to go all the way down to Canal St. Another example, I got some jumbo shrimp for $8.99/lb, while in Chinatown, i saw the same thing for $4.99, almost half of what you pay for on the upper east side! If you do go there for dim sum one of these mornings, hold off your grocery shopping till you go to Chinatown and get some of the fresh vegetables, fruits and seafood down there.

I also went to a butcher shop on 87th and Madison across the street from the food emporium. Unless you want to spend $24.99/lb on veal, dont go there. I am not doubting at all how fresh the meat is (because they looked very clean and tasted delicious), but just the price alone can stop you going there.

As I left the grocery store, a red strobe came from every wall, sending all other shoppers into grand mal seizures. An auto tuned Morgan Freeman impersonator asked me to wait for an employee to assist me. A giant steel cage slammed down over me, separating me from my cart full of foodstuffs. I asked to be taken back to the security office so the ex-marine-looking gentleman eyeing my receipt could search for the stolen merchandise in my ass. But they wouldn’t do it. So I guess this Vizio LCD is mine.

What pisses me off about shoplifters is not that they violate social norms or contribute to the overhead that fuels price increases. It’s that they think they deserve some kind of dignity when they’re caught. You took a pack of Rolos, cock flap. You don’t get to walk to the back with a jacket over your hands and your head held high. You get to be tackled by seven cart-pushers and dragged, weeping, through the produce aisle, while they announce your legal name and address over the loudspeaker. You’re not taking a loaf of bread or a pair of baby shoes. You get no pity, queef whippit. Actually, even if you were, I’d still point and laugh because you’re fucking poor.

Even better: the fat bitch who tries to fight the security guys off. She’s always screaming something trashy, like “he’s trying to get down my panties!” or “Fuck you, man! I brought that chicken in with me!” or “Kick him in the nuts, Kenny!” She rolls around, pseudopods of corpulence stretching outward and covering onlookers with a yellow, pube-garnished paste before sliding back into the vicinity of her Tweety Bird tube top. She is the complete opposite of the “don’t draw attention to me” breed. She wants everyone to know that she’s the kind of nasty whore who hides crack rocks and stolen makeup in tampon applicators.

Stealing is wrong and hilarious. Seriously… is the cost of petty theft so high that it justifies the camera systems, security guys, electronic anti-theft systems and those little tag things that cum ink and battery acid? I have a great idea: smaller stores where inventories can be monitored by the people who actually work there. If you want one-stop shopping, go to the mall, shithead. Besides, they have corn dogs there. And corn dogs rule.

With the Holiday season approaching, how can you stay organic without breaking the bank? What we like to call Pie Season, can be an expensive time for groceries. Your family wants to eat, and you want to feed them good, fresh, organic food.

A good go-to rule for buying organic is to focus mostly on the dairy, meat, and eggs in your groceries. Livestock are often fed pesticide-ridden, genetically modified corn feed, shot with extra hormones and antibiotics; all of which end up in our supermarket meat, dairy, and eggs. These elements cannot be removed from the products, whereas most of the pesticide residue found on produce can be washed away. Therefore, do not worry as much about all organic produce — focus on the meat of the issue!

When buying produce, however, you can take into consideration a few things about those non-organic veggies. Produce that takes a long time to grow, will be higher in pesticide content. The more sugar a fruit or veggie has, the more pesticides are used to ward off insects. The Environmental Workers Union gives us a list of some produce with higher pesticide levels (you might want to opt organic for these “dirty dozen”): Apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, grapes (imported), nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, red raspberries, spinach, and strawberries.

What else can you do to cut organic corners? 1) Print coupons: http://www.stonyfield.com/ and http://www.organicvalley.coop/ provide coupons and special offers for their products. 2) Portion control: Remember that the recommended portion size for meat is 3 ounces. Balance that with some veggies and whole grains for a full meal. 3) Try alternative proteins: Add other sources of protein to your diet such as beans, or tofu. You do not have to eat meat every day to get in your protein. 4) Generic organic: Most supermarkets have generic organic brands such as Safeway’s O Organics line, H-E-B’s Central Market Organic selections. 5) Bulk shop: Buy all of your non-perishables in bulk. Things like rice, canned soup and vegetables, dried fruits and nuts are all much cheaper in bulk. Organic brown rice in bulk is 99 cents per pound.

MEIJER BRINGS TOGETHER LOCAL & REGIONAL SPECIALTIES,
FAMILY-OWNED SUPPLIERS AND UNIQUE RECIPES
TO CREATE AN EXCITING NEW LINE OF FOOD PRODUCTS

New Meijer Gold To Include Items With A Distinctive Story Of Origin

From Taco Sauce To Cheesecake, Every Product Has A Tale To Tell

GRAND RAPIDS, MI (November 19, 2009) – With such diverse delicacies as handcrafted sparkling lemonade from an original family recipe in France, to cocoa sourced from a Pacific Northwest family known for producing luscious chocolate recipes, Meijer’s new premium private label brand features singular products that all have a unique story to tell.

The new Meijer Gold offers unexpected and indulgent discoveries at affordable prices. But what makes the brand unique is its collection of original recipe items that are either made by a local company within the Meijer footprint, or by a family-owned business. The line also features interesting foods endemic to a particular place or country.

“Meijer customers have great taste, and it’s our job to keep providing them with great-tasting food items,” said Ralph Fischer, group vice president-foods at Meijer. “But we also want to offer them products that they won’t find anywhere else, and that’s exactly what Meijer Gold offers. We’ve traveled the globe and looked in small towns to source premium products that have a distinctive history, heritage or story.”

Each one of the delectable products in the Meijer Gold line has a tale to tell. For instance, the brand’s mustard is prepared from an age-old German recipe by a long-time Midwestern company; the salsa is created by an acclaimed family-owned Southern California producer; and the cream pasta sauces are sourced from the legendary Chicago restaurateurs, the Mugnolo family.

With more than 80 items comprising the upcoming launch, all Meijer Gold recipes are unique to the grocer, and include the finest ingredients and attention to detail. This promise of affordable excellence is furthered by the brand’s mandate that every Gold product must have a distinctive story of origin that not only enhances the uniqueness of the product, but also reaffirms Meijer’s commitment to local communities, businesses and families.

A sampling of some of the unique products that fall under the Meijer Gold brand include Champagne Dill Mustard, Sugar-Free Maple-Praline Syrup, Grilled Pineapple Chipotle Salsa, Smokey Mozzarella Cheese Spread, Porcini Truffle Tortellini, Crab Puff Pastries, Biscotti Munch Chocolate Caramel Cookies and Michigan Apple Cheesecake.

Meijer Gold is for food connoisseurs looking for more experience-rich foods, such as those born of family traditions. The high-quality line is supported by premium packaging, which highlights both the flavor and ‘golden’ aspect of the brand. Along with a recognizable gold seal and appetizing imagery, each package tells the compelling story of the product’s origin, allowing consumers to feel as if they are sharing in someone’s family tradition.

Originally launched in 2005, Meijer Gold served to provide a premium version of everyday items. This new approach to the Meijer Gold brand is a result of Meijer’s desire to deepen its commitment and connection to regionally sourced foods, family-run businesses, and authentic and distinctive recipes.

“Meijer Gold allows consumers to add a touch of flair to their everyday cuisine,” said Fischer. “The brand’s distinctive products and flavor cues will turn an ordinary meal into a premium experience that will blow customers away without blowing their grocery budgets.”

Just toss and wash with our handy, pre-measured detergent pacs. The concentrated pac is biodegradable and completely dissolves in your washer, leaving behind nothing but clean, happy clothes. Plus, Dropps is enzyme-free and phosphate-free, so it’s gentle enough for babies and sensitive skin. Just one pac washes a whole load – all fabrics, all colors, in all temperatures. And because our formula is 6x concentrated, we don’t waste water in manufacturing, and don’t waste energy transporting heavy jugs. Making Dropps a lean, green cleaning machine.
(517) 319-4124

Website

If you would have told me two years ago one of the things I would miss most about Lansing was Quality Dairy, I would have called you crazy. From the outside, these stores look like the typical convenience store. Inside? Not much different…at least until you dive into their unique goodies.

For me, most Quality Dairy stops were Pepsi stops. The thing I really loved about QD is that there’s almost always one near where you are. I could actually plan a trip somewhere and know that I could stop for a 32 oz. pop on my way and not have to deal with the gas station hassle of everyone in front of you buying cigarettes and the clerk not knowing which package is which. It was almost always a quick in and out.

My second day of work in East Lansing ended pretty late. It was after 10:00 by the time I started heading back to my hotel. I thought about grabbing a pizza in East Lansing, but I was tired and not really wanting to deal with Friday night crowds in a college town, so I just drove. I didn’t want fast food again, but I really wanted a Pepsi.

I took the Creyts Road exit off I-496 to get back to my hotel on Saginaw Highway. Along the way, I came across a QD at Creyts Road and St. Joseph Highway. There were also a couple gas stations in the area, but just because I had started a mission to hit every QD (31 in all) I crossed traffic to see if I could find something to eat.

If you’re in a doughnut or ice cream mood, Quality Dairy is a good choice. They have some delicious fresh-baked (in Lansing) pastries and some great premium ice cream. I wasn’t in the mood for either. Some QD locations have pizza by the slice. It’s not great pizza, but at least it’s warm. This is not one of those locations.

I grabbed my Pepsi from the fountain machine which looks to be pretty new. Some of the older QD locations had some pretty sad-looking fountain drink machines. This was not one of those.

After that, I started looking around for food. All I could really find were cold meat sandwiches. I had picked up one of their sandwiches before and was pretty satisfied by it, so I grabbed a Triple Turkey Wedge.

Tonight’s “dinner” cost me a whopping four bucks. Hard to argue with that. I waited until I got back to the hotel to dig into the sandwich. It really isn’t much more than a truck stop sandwich, but instead of just two wedges, there were three. There was a slice of turkey wedged between a slice of yellow cheese and a slice of white cheese (no indication on the package what kind it was). I wasn’t super hungry due to a big lunch, but it was something before bed and I knew Saturday was going to be another day where I wouldn’t get a whole lot of time to eat.

Quality Dairy came through again. Like I said earlier, I know it’s wierd to miss a convenience store, but I’d really rather go to a place like this for a quick pop than a gas station. At least I still have a few more trips to Lansing to see if I can hunt down the other stores I wasn’t able to make it to when I lived there.
