Being a closet sucker for house (especially the tech/circus/gypsy -house that Circus Companys Nôze and dOP are heavy exponents for along with Tartelet Recs, The Gym and Brandt Brauer Frick), I thought it might be time for a post which soul purpose is to promote a little of the ‘housy’ stuff I haven’t allowed much attention on the jacket.

Sunny Day Sets Fire – Brainless (Baron Von Luxxury Remix)
These London indie-poppers weigh in with an extremely contagious tune whose contagion level is only made worse by the mysterious Baron Von Luxxury’s production work. Flanging the hell out of the vocals is always a nice touch as is the dirtied-up synth work. Recommended for all tomorrow’s parties (and that includes today’s).

Black Hollies – Gloomy Monday Morning
Sounding like they escaped from someone’s garage in the mid-60’s with Phil Spector in tow, the Black Hollies throwback sound evokes a simpler time when drug busts only happened to bikers and truckers. This track takes an enjoyable spin around the “corner of 39,” scattering echoing, spacious drums and gorgeous harmonies all over the place.

Never in a million years would anyone believe something this good has come out of New Jersey. Believe it.

Human People – I’d Run Just Like You (Demo)
I think I’ve featured them before on the Heavy Rotation but what the hell, let’s do it again. Everything you’ve always loved about synthpop jam-packed into a 2 minute exercise in icy, new wave brilliance. Like Gary Numan with a beating heart.

Holy shit. What happened here?

These guys used to watch everyone shaking their ass (I See You, Baby) or lying around soaking up salty air on the sand dunes (At the River). They’ve spent a majority of their career entertaining the slower tempoed side of house. Now, without any warning, they have decided to slash your tires and set your lawn on fire, musically speaking. This rocks harder than it has any right to, given the pedigree. Enjoy.

Divide & Kreate – Little Bitch (Britney Spears vs. Death From Above 1979)
Nothing like a great mashup to wrap up the day. Divide & Kreate add Britney Spear’s winsome bitching to the thunderous drum and bass combination of Death From Above 1979 to create the most kickass track Britney Spears never released. If someone can make Ms. Spears bearable, D&K can. They can most likely put a man on the moon as well.

Worlds away from their chart-friendly cheese of yore, this is pretty, glacial synthpop that is here Stevie Nicks, there Grace Jones, and all over pretty damn sweet.

It features the anonymous but pretty handy vocals of SaintSaviour, last seen by your reviewer fronting the RGBs in a swimming costume, playing to a half empty room at a city music festival somewhere or other.

Ты родился в итальянской деревушке, с самого детства учился игре на акустической гитаре и методу игры с листа, так какой была эта долгая дорога от Шопена до Warp 1.9?

Меня учили классической музыке с малых лет, это оказалось отличным багажом и, конечно же, повлияло на то, как я сочиняю музыку теперь. Музыка есть музыка, технологии и общество меняются, а человеческие эмоции остаются прежними.

Так что привело тебя к Bloody Beetroots?

Попытка привнести эстетику панк-рока на клубную сцену.

Bloody Beetroots играют панк-электро. Мы постепенно развиваемся, используем настоящие инструменты на сцене, такой вот гибрид, эволюция, мой друг…

Множество электронных музыкантов, рассуждающих о полностью “живых” выступлениях, на самом деле ни разу не делали ничего подобного. Недавно ты рассказал про новый проект Bloody Beetroots в 2010 году, сотрудничество с Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti. Во что это может вылиться?

В следующем году у нас будет “живой” тур. Я буду играть на гитаре, басу и клавишных. А еще у нас будет ударник. В конце тура, правда, мы обойдемся без Nuova accademia…, сделаем более электронное шоу, более грязное…

Я видел, в Твиттере ты сообщил о том, что вы нашли 3-го участника Bloody Beetroots. Это что, шутка, кто это?

Это все еще совершенно секретно.

В итальянской La Commedia Dell’arte персонажи часто относят себя к маскам, т.е. Характер маски совпадает с характером самого персонажа. Однако позднее с появлением Венецианских карнавалов маска стала применяться прямо противоположно – чтобы скрыть истинное лицо своего обладателя и позволить вести себя более свободно, часто за гранью нормального поведения. Так кто вы? Сами маски или они скрывают вашу настоящую сущность?

Это вам решать, но могу дать кое-какие подсказки. Маски создают персонажей более ярких, чем реальная жизнь. Они становятся с одной стороны легендой, с другой стороны они более ироничны. Они выдумка, а людям нужны фантазии, чтобы избавиться от того де**ма, что пичкает им система.

Ты явно заявляешь о своем анархичном мировоззрении, the Bloody Beetroots, тем не менее, обладают неизменным имиджем, характерным звуком и видением электронной музыкальной сцены. Что сделало вас маяком целого движения. И как вам в одно и то же время быть и анархистами и связующим звеном на электронной сцене?

Я и так сжигаю их периодически, без какой-либо надобности поджигать оставшуюся часть дома.

Очевидно, что на вас серьезным образом повлияли комиксы, конкретно Tanino Liberatore. И как его работы, полные причудливого ультранасилия сформировали образ группы?

Работы Tanin сыграли огромную роль в становлении нашего стиля и восприятия действительности. Его комиксы создают параллельные миры жестокие, глубокие и полные разочарования. Человечество с начала времен рассказывает истории, возьмите Гомера или Вергилия, какую оказывается жесть они писали. Нам людям как-то приходится справляться со всем происходящим вокруг нас бардаком.

Когда-то ты сказал, “Без объединения не совершить революцию. Начнем с музыки, а мир чуть позже”. Ну и как успехи в революции?

Я музыкант, а не политик. Но у любой социальной революции должен быть свой саундтрек.

A doua recomandare a saptamanii e alcatuita de fapt din doua jumatati de recomandare…ca sa fiu in ton cu criza. Doua jumatati de trupe britanice cunoscute vor concerta la Cluj in aceiasi zi in doua locatii diferite. Una este trupa Unkle, iar cealalta este Groove Armada.  Sa le luam pe rand.

Unkle este o trupa  infiintata în 1994 de James Lavelle şi Tim Goldsworthy. Trupa a debutat in acelasi an cu albumul “The Time Has Come”. Un an mai tarziu, componenta trupei s-a schimbat: Tim Goldsworthy a ales sa se implice într-un alt proiect, iar locul sau în trupa a fost luat de DJ Shadow. Primul album lansat in noua  formula a fost “Psyence Fiction”, in 1998, la care au colaborat şi o serie de artisti importanti, printre care Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Mike D (Beastie Boys), Kool G. Rap, Jason Newsted (Metallica), Badly Drawn Boy si Richard Aschroft (The Verve).

James Lavelle, initiatorul proiectului este DJ si producator (formularea cu jumatate de Unkle recunosc ca e un pic fortata, el fiind mai mult decat atat) , a mixat  compilatia Global Underground 026. El este primul DJ care a deschis seria de compilatii Fabriclive. Tot el conduce de aproximativ zece ani şi un record label intitulat Mo Wax, un “trip-hop” label legendar.  Lavelle va mixa la Cluj in Club Midi vineri, 13 noiembrie incepand cu orele 23.00.

Groove Armada este o trupa londoneza de big beat formata din Tom Findlay si Andy Cato la mijlocul anilor 90. De la infiintare au lansat vreo 8 albume si au cucerit publicul prin muzica lor . Piesele celor doi au fost incluse in campanii publicitare, filme sau jocuri pe calculator. Cea mai cunoscuta piesa a lor este Hit-ul din 2000:  I See You Baby remixata de Fatboy Slim.

Trupa este reprezentata la Cluj prin Tom Findlay. Pasionat de muzica inca din adolescenta, britanicul soseste in premiera la Cluj, pentru 2 ore de DJ Set la festival. “Inca din perioada tineretii, gusturile muzicale ale lui Tom au trecut prin punk, jazz, disco, Black Sabbath, electro – toate inainte sa descopere coplesitoarea forta a muzicii house”, se arata in biografia oficiala a artistului. Este cunoscut atit pentru activitatea muzicala din grupul Groov Armada, alcatuit impreuna cu Andy Cato, cit si pentru cariera sa individuala. “Sa fii Dj este un lucru extraordinar. Imi place la nebunie sa mixez seturi (care imbina muzica house cu disco, electro german sau electro pur si simplu), inspirate de persoane precum DJ Erol Alkan, dar si de viata mea in Londra”.

Findlay va mixa in cadrul Student Parade ce va avea loc la Sala Sporturilor “Horia Demian”. Vor mai fi si alti Dj romani si dansatoare si lumini, lasere, etc.. Biletul costa 30RON

Spuneam la inceput ca sunt doua semirecomandari, in primul rand pentru ca o recomandare ar viza trupele in formula completa si in al doilea rand nu sunt foarte convins ca muzica celor doi singurei la pupitru poate sa se apropie macar de muzica  trupelor care le-au adus popularitatea.

As fi propus organizatoriilor celor doua evenimente sa le cupleze in aceiasi locatie. Ar fi fost frumos sa vedem un afis cu Groove Unkle sau Unkle Armada live la Cluj.

Ca o concluzie e bine totusi ca si la Cluj incep sa vina jumatati.  Sa speram ca pe viitor o vina si intregi.

PS: Sunt curios daca Lavelle si Findley vin cu aceeasi cursa low-cost Londra- Cluj si daca in avion se vor preface ca nu se cunosc, dar ajunsi pe aeroportul din Cluj se vor hotari sa renunte la orgolii in favoarea bunastarii portmoneelor lor, in aceste vremuri grele pt. a imparti acelasi taxi pana la hotel.

- Pt. cei care vor merge la cele doua concerte, aveti filmuletele de jos… sa aveti cu ce compara…dar mai ales distractie placuta.

Todos conocemos a The Bloody Beetroots y a Groove Armada; ambos nos encantan, así que de esta fusión sólo podia salir algo bueno. Es un tema agradable, cautivador y sobretodo necesario en nuestras bibliotecas y listas de reproducción;

Y como suele pasar, cuanto más la escuchéis, más os gustará.

Hace días que estoy medio atrapado por ese tema de Groove Armada, que al principio parecía que no, pero que al final ha sido para mi un grower en toda regla. Estos chicos de Inglaterra, seguramente llevan la carrera más irregular de toda la música electrónica como género, pero nos han dejado una colección de singles más que decentes, como para estar entre los grandes. Los italianos The Bloody Beetroots, que hasta hoy no sabía ni quien eran (mi ignorancia hacia la música electrónica italiana, va desapareciendo poco a poco), les han mezclado ese “I Won’t Kneel”, single adelanto del álbum “Black Lights” que saldrá a principios del año que viene, y aunque con la mezcla le ha sacado parte del aire de new romantic ochentero que tenía el tema, al menos nos dará la oportunidad de poderlo bailar….

After a few weeks of being struck down with a dreaded lurgy, I have been raised from a near grave to present this new morsel to you.

From Groove Armada’s new album Black Light, due out next year, here’s I Won’t Kneel, which has already been given a little working over by the Bloody Beetroots for the single release on November 23.

This is probably going to sound enormously lame, but this next post was written due to inspiration generated from the new Young Soul Rebels War Child song, the cover of The Killers I Got Soul. Feel slightly out of perspective considering this song is about children dying in war, and listening to lyrics makes events of my life laughable in comparison.

Now I’m listening to Groove Armada’s Purple Haze, amazing song with a slight excerpt of the Hendrix classic. Listening to music I love always makes me think about the people who created it – how did they do it? How did they go and just make music? They just DID, is how.

Reading the last 8 or so posts of what’s been this arduous dedication to what I’ve probably conveyed as the hardest, most dramatic, most unique, most astounding problem ever known to any woman or man, I can’t help but thinking about what I have created.

What have I created?

A lot of HOT AIR. A lot of HOT AIR and WHINING.

I have the accent for whining. I’m an Australian. An Australian girl with a particularly whiny voice which incidentally, some people earmark as phone-sexy (I have no idea who or what would label my voice in such a way. May he rest in peace, but it’s like suggesting Steve Irwin was the modern-day Barry White). But just because I have the accent for it, it does not under any circumstances give me the license to do it incessantly.

So I screwed around with a married guy, dumped my ex-boyfriend, and married guy’s wife had a baby. And because I’m a human and not an engineered machine, I ended up with a few feelings so I screwed around a bit more. I’m sorry, is there are actually room in the already bursting-at-seams-extramarital-affair-participant club, or will I need to join the year long waiting list?

My point is (I finally have one) – for the love of god, who cares? Nobody else, that’s for sure, and it’s high time that I didn’t either. There are people out there with actual, tangible problems, and while I’m not saying the last year of my life has been problem free, it’s all about the context.

Today, whilst filling a basket with 46 quid worth of shoes and various stockings and tights in Primark, I thought about lifestyles. I looked in the mirror while I twirled around trying on my now new pair of corporate-pencil-skirt-matching red stiletto heels (which I will wear to the office – I’m sorry, but I never volunteered for the job of making life any easier for married people), and imagined telling my sordid tale to the 13-year-old child who sat in a crowded, sweaty, smelly warehouse making these shoes.

‘Well, you see, there’s a man and… and he sort of kissed me and then you know, went back to his wife and I didn’t like that, and then you know, I might have sent him this text message and then his wife-’

‘Yeah, I have a family of five, including my parents, to support with my 5p equivalent daily wage and I’ve been working for thirteen hours. When my shift ends I’m going to go home and tend to my sick little brother and try and find enough food to feed the rest of us tonight. You were saying?’

I’m not saying the wealthy Western world should feel guilty about feeling the way we do about certain situations and events in our lives (about, about). We’re humans and humans have feelings, it’s both a fortunate and unfortunate element of our make-up (genetic, not cosmetic). It’s just sometimes – well, really, all I’m trying to say, if there’s anyone reading this who’s also feeling covered by steel duvet’s weight’s worth of problems – it can help to jump outside your head for just a few minutes and think about the globe. Once you think about the globe, you can start making changes in your life to get yourself and those around you to where you’d all like to be.

Currently, I’m listening to one of my favourite songs (Groove Armada’s Lightsonic – yes, I’ve worked my way through the album during this post), I’m looking at my new boots and red heels with a secret kind of glee (I’m sorry, but my SSS will understand -  once a stirrer, always a stirrer), and I’m waiting on a call for a new job which I’m 90% sure I’ll get. It doesn’t sound like much, but I think, as the beginning of my recovery phase, that’s a good start for tonight.

The other reason why I was in Amsterdam last weekend was because of the Amsterdam Dance Event, which brings music professionals to this wonderful Dutch city and gives out an awesome show. This year’s acts for the big event at the Heineken Music Hall were as follows: Timo Maas & Santos, Kaskade, Groove Armada, Pete Tong–and of course, Deadmau5!

I couldn’t believe I was going to listen to these great DJ’s perform in one roof. The fact that Deadmau5 was performing hooked me in; because Deadmau5 was on the roster, it was bound to be off the hook! I might add this was my first all-nighter event, as it ended at 6:00 a.m.

The people who showed up to this event were an interesting bunch. Most of the crowd was Dutch (obviously), but I encountered a few Americans (mostly giggling coeds from Connecticut), a Japanese guy, and a couple from the Southern Hemisphere. Some people decided to make it an early Halloween event, as noted by the Lego costumes and the Deadmau5 masks while observing people. I made some potential new friends, including a few Dutchmen who thought I was cool for some reason. They wanted me to move to the Netherlands and started spewing profanities about Vegas, calling it a town “for pussies.” Pretty random stuff.

The two best performers at this event were Groove Armada and Deadmau5 by far. I thought Groove Armada’s set was reminiscent of 80’s music and the singer (Saintsaviour) reminded me of Karen O. Deadmau5 on the other hand rocked the crowd with some old favorites, complete with “you have to be there to experience it” visuals and references to video games past.

Although the music was by far nothing I’ve ever experienced before, I would have to say the Heineken Music Hall was a pig sty when the event started winding down. Not really a good way to end it all.

The Lovebox Festival in London and the Isle of Wight’s Bestival are the latest organisations to sign up to the 10:10 climate change campaign which asks members to cut their carbon emissions by 10%.  The organisation now has more than 38,000 individual members and 1200 companies and organisations including Tottenham Hotspur football club, Adidas, Microsoft UK and 56 local councils. Both festivals say they are looking to reduce their carbon emissions with Lovebox’s Tom Findlay saying “I was very fired up by the whole notion of the 10:10 campaign” adding “a lot of it is just enormous practical common sense” but cautioning that ”there is no one fundamentally brilliant idea to solve it”. Lovebox are looking at better transport solutions, using sustainable power and providing water fountains to make a change and reduce emissions. At Bestival, organiser and radio 1 DJ  Rob da Bank said “we will be looking to make cuts in emissions by creating incentives to use public transport” – the festival will also be using more solar power and local biofuels as well as promoting car sharing. Bestival won an ‘oustanding’ Greener Festival Award in 2009.
